How to Beat the air lines on their fees!
How to Beat the air lines on their fees!
Airlines dont generally charge extra for hockey equipment since they do not want the NHL teams not to fly with them. Put your bike in a hockey bag and have it under 50 pounds is a simple way to beat those hefty bike fees!
Remember to say it is sporting equipment in the bag and you shouldnt have an issue!

I think Mitch is right: if you say that it's, "sporting equipment," then technically you are not lying. If someone from TSA were to x-ray it and see that it's a bike, AND they found out that you had not checked it in as such, well you STILL weren't lying when you claimed, "sporting equipment." At that point, you play the innocent "sports enthusiast," and assure them that you had no idea that bikes were an additional fee. My only concern is traveling abroad to live for a year, 3 or 4 stopovers to get there, and taking my carbon Nomad in a bag rather than a hardcase. I guess you can pad the hockey bag with all sorts of foam as long as it remains less than 50 lbs. Thanks for the tip, in any case! Good idea!

I think the airlines would trash your bike if in a hockey bag. I watched a guy kicking my Iron Case as hard as he could to get it on a little commuter flight's cargo hold. I can't imagine what that would have done if I used a bag.... Great tip though nonetheless. Another good one that takes more skill is to hang around the AP but then check in 'almost too late'. I was rushed through without weighing my box and it was included in the 50lb sporting allowance for free on Air Canada

Doesnt it not matter what is inside? I thought the bigger and hevier the bag the more you pay.....
How would sporting equipment or a bike make a difference.

its still cheaper to pay for extra baggage weight then it is to pay for a bike box, and the extra bags, plus this way they dont go through your bike box and tear it up leaving your bike open to the outside world and able to loose parts

Just tell them its sporting equipment, The check in clerks dont have legal authority to check if you wont let them only the TSA does and thats hassle for a clerk to go get one. Since its a hockey bag most airlines wont charge extra for its because of the NHL. Keep it under 50 lbs and its not charged for over weight!

thats great advice. im going to bc in august and i will def have to use that . how much does it normally cost to take that bag along?

how is that any easier than using a bike bag or bike box? It'll still weigh the same and therefore how is any cheaper? :S

because for bikes they charge $50+ each way and for an extra bag its around 25 bucks. so you put your bike in a regular bag and tell them it sporting equipment and they charge you 25 for the extra bag

Airlines in north america charge a huge fee for a bike box, from $100-250 USD each way, depending on the air line.

will they ever want to look inside your bag or put it through a scanner to see whats in side of it
