Randoms Round 1 - Sea Otter 2024
I rode both in the same era - I had (still do) an orange mrXC and a my riding buddy had a trek URT much like the one pictured. The big disadvantage of URT was that you couldn't engineer anti-squat into the bike so it tended to bob a fair amount under pedalling compared to the orange. That is a true disadvantage and a good reason we don't ride them any more (which iDrive also counteracted, through a different mechanism) - its nothing to do with suspension stiffening when standing up. in my original post I'd meant to write "fairly indistinguishable from that ride characteristic" - the stiffening doesn't make a difference, the antisquat does

Randoms Round 1 - Sea Otter 2024
the whole "stiffened when you stood up" thing for URT bikes is massively overblown. If you look at the pivot position vs the position of the crankset and the rear axle, you can see that the bb is moving maybe 3% less than the pivot (and thus the whole front triangle) would be - resulting in a 3% stiffer/3% less travel when standing - or 97mm travel instead of 100mm which a bike of this era is likely to have. Thats not to say URTs are the peak of suspension design, but compared to single pivot, a modern URT design would probably be fairly indistinguishable from a ride characteristic.

Review: Race Face's Era Chainring Uses Steel, Carbon, & Aluminum
So a 90kg rider putting all their weight on a 175mm crank is 158Nm if you're riding spds you can pull up with the other leg (and if you're not you can apply more than your weight's torque by pulling up on the bars), so the (very short lived) max torque is probably higher than that. still well within boundaries though

Saracen Announces New Ariel 30 Elite & Updates to Existing Range
Ive had an Ariel 30 for 3 years, which is the same basic frame design as the 80 although with less load and rotation on the pivots, not had to do the bolts up any more than I would expect to (twice in total I think)

Revenue Round Up: The Latest Financial Reports from Giant, Shimano & More
I read some research that suggests, counter intuitively, that an e bike ridden for a distance creates less CO2 emissions than a non e bike - basically because humans are pretty inefficient machines (turning crops into meat into energy) compared to even fossil fuel generated electricity. 2000 calories is about 50p worth of electricity (just over 2 kwh). Obviously that doesn't take into consideration manufacturing impacts, but for a town bike (as the majority of these giants are), used for a few years, an e bike is likely better for the environment

Review: The Pivot Shadowcat is Niche & Nimble
I think the 105mm measure is correct. You need to adjust for both the amount of wheel below the axle (-17mm or so) as well as the additional length of the lowers (~17mm). basically you've got 35mm more wheel, and the same gap between the crown and the tyre at bottom-out, so you need 35mm less travel to have the crown in the right place at 0 travel
