It's only exposed to the sun while you're transporting your bike, and the contact surfaces are obviously never exposed to the sun.
Mine's five years old and no sign of deterioration.

You'd think that, but you begin to trust it very quickly after the first drive.
I did once pull over on the way to Thredbo to check it because I was getting lots of funny looks from drivers going the other way, but it turned out to be the rack itself rather then anything wrong with it.

My car has neither roof rack nor tow hitch options so I've been using a Seasucker for the last five years.
It's fiddly, but no more fiddly than mounting a hitch rack.
