Let me preface this by saying that I personally (and virtually alone) prefer to record dates as YYYY.MM.DD, because then they can be easily sorted in chronological order.
But the MM/DD/YYYY convention is because of how we typically refer to a date in conversation. Today is May 7th, 2024. The format is popular in Canada too, although I understand not quite as predominant as here.
