Video: The 'Science' Behind Cleat Positioning with Ben Cathro
@brycebee: Two weeks ago, everyone was criticizing Wolf Tooth’s convex pedals because allegedly if you pedal mid-foot, convex is great, but on the balls of your feet, like the vast majority of people commenting, you need concave pedals or some such. I don’t know. Whatever works for you, I guess. There are way too many variables involved for me to say for sure, including the shoes themselves. Personally, I run convex pedals and there’s just a natural place to put your feet. I put them there based on feel. With clips, I run them more back than forward, but slamming them all the way back doesn’t feel quite right. I feel back too far on my heels. Except one time I had the Vans clipless shoes, and they were poorly designed. Slammed the clips way back, and even then they felt too far forward.

I can’t think of a single sport where you generate the most power balance, and agility from a flat foot. Even in skiing where your heels are locked down in stiff plastic boots, you’re driving forward with your shins so most of the power is forward on the feet. Maybe I’m misunderstanding the mechanics here, but being back in your heels seems less than optimal. Ben’s calculations seem to be based on being either all the way forward or all the way back, my intuition says neither is the best spot, but somewhere in the middle.

Bike Check: Evan Wall's Haro Greer Prototype Enduro Bike
@sfarnum: Because a lot of those residential collection companies don’t have the capacity/facilities to recycle a bike frame — they don’t want the paint, certain alloys won’t work, etc. They obviously took it, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t sorted out and thrown in with the trash. If you called them and asked, then you’re probably good. I would recommend taking a bike frame to a recycling center.

Bike Check: Evan Wall's Haro Greer Prototype Enduro Bike
@sfarnum: Unless you took that frame to a scrapyard or recycling center, I’m not sure that got recycled.

Bike Check: Evan Wall's Haro Greer Prototype Enduro Bike
@sfarnum: 98 percent of these guys have never recycled an aluminum frame. Tell the truth — have you?

But can we really call it a proper prototype without the lugs these days?

3 Initiatives at Sea Otter Pushing for a More Inclusive Bike Industry
@notthatfast: Ignoring all the assumptions you’ve made here in terms of him not knowing what it’s like not to have things, what would you require him to do in this case? What special treatment does he owe women who want to get into mountain biking that he does not extend to the rest of us?
