First Look: New Sony Action Cam to Shoot 4K
In my opinion the main reason to buy a Sony is the image stabilization. I use an older Action Cam and the stabilization works pretty well. If you don't want to spend $500 on a camera you can also think about the AS200V or other older models. I fear there too are many people who buy a GoPro just because of the brand and without doing research for good alternatives.
There isn't just GoPro. There is also Sony, Drift Innovation, Contour, etc.
