A 2nd opinion sounds very sensible...that's what I had, as the first doctors I saw back in the UK really didn't do a very good job and in fact re-broke it whilst I was NOT under anaesthetic whilst they were trying to see how strong the callus was! That was even more painful than the original break! It may sound odd, but for me, after I had a little bit of bone callus formation, the best thing was to remove the brace completely - as the 2nd doc advised - and use a light brace and a compression/tubi-grip (one of those elastic sock things). To my amazement, the full callus formed so quickly after that. I guess it was no coincidence that I had such slow recovery at the start (with the tight brace) and that I also had bad lymphedema (fluid build up and swelling) in the arm with the first docs...they just did it all up waaaay too tight, so the blood flow was restricted. But I'd really recommend a 2nd opinion...with a different doctor AND hospital if you can! Best of luck!

alright yeah i already just got a 2nd opinion scheduled.

rebraking would be the last thing i would be the worst. dont know how you could stand that.

doesnt bone callus stop my arm from having full movement?
thanks

That's good news! When they re-brake bones, they're meant to do it under local or general anaesthetic, but the doc I saw, after seeing my xrays, thought the bone was strong enough to 'give it a wiggle'...it wasn't and it re-broke! Then the bandaged it up again too tight and that's when I got the lymphedema problems. As for the callus, in the sort term it will prevent a bit of movement, but it needs to form to that it can repairs the bone...think of it like a big ball of dough, with the bones joining inside the middle of it...the callus gets all your body's nutrients, heals the bone, then gradually dissolves over a few months (or probably years in my case as I'm in my 30's!). Lemme know how the 2nd opinion goes...

hey man. just got my second opinion and the doctor said that i just need to do some physical therapy with this pully device that he gave me. he said my arm should be fine becasue it is healing quite normally. he doesnt want to put plates or rods in because it would be right next to the nerve that paralizes your arm so the nerve would be resting right on top of the plates. i decided not to do that. to risky. he told me never to do pushups or dips ever again. but it worked out better than my other doctor

That's great news mate! Once the healing begins, it's just physio all the way! Sometimes that's the hardest and most painful bit and I'd agree that you shouldn't do pushups with a break like that - at least for now Wink .

My 2nd opinion doc said basically the same as yours as my break was across the radial groove where that same nerve kinda spirals round the back of the humerus (I've heard it's a common break site for people you arm-wrestle too)...that's why I didn't have surgery (they started talking about nerve grafts from my leg and stuff and I soooo wasn't up for that!).

Hey, hope the physio goes well and take it easy! We're both on the road (sorry, that should be dirt) to recovery! Smile

alright man thanks for everything and all your advice. really helped a lot. so yeah from now. im just sticking to physical therapy for a while

how long does that take to heel cause my humerus has been broken for almost 4 months and it is still broken

Hi mate, well not to put you off, but I'm only just getting back to riding now...that's 13 months on! Had a look on your profile and it looks like you've had a spiral fracture?...only a little closer to your elbow. Have you had surgery? I didn't as the break was next to the nerve, so the docs decided not to and splinted it for 5 MONTHS!!! I've got about 90% mobility back in the elbow and shoulder, but the rest may never come, and the muscles are still pretty weak (my arm looked like a twig when the splints came off), and my days of hucking are truly over...the arm just won't take it. If you're under 19-21, you should be fine as you're (no offence meant) skeletally immature, so you're bones will adapt as you grow, but for me at 32, my arm will have a permanent kink and a slight twist. Oh, and my left arm's half a centimetre shorter Smile Healing vibes dude!

yeah after 4 months i thought i would be good right now. i havent had surgery but im trying to get a 2nd opinion from a doctor to see if i need it.i have a brace right now and it seems to be helping a little, but i still have about 70-80% mobility in my elbow and shoulder. my muscles, ligiments tore during the break so and messed up some nerves. and it was a compund fracture by the way. it was a pretty nasty break. i just hope im able to ride again.

Watched all of them, there's nothing that gets me more stoked for riding than helmetcam footy.

These are the guys I buy from in the UK: http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/Sony-HXR-MC1P-high-definition-helmet-camera.htm...check out the bike rigging! Have seen footage from this cam and it's out of this world!

If that's the one you bought, your videos are going to be insane, too bad that pinkbike hasn't offered HD playback yet like youtube and some other sites. That's hella expensive, use it like you bought it (sounds silly, but it's better than buying something expensive and being afraid to use it)

Not parted with the cash just yet...but I plan to buy it for both my work and play. I've seen that VholdR have an HD 720 version of their old SD unit now, which is a barrel cheaper, but the Sony gear is a lot more robust and the picture quality is simply stunning, using much better AVCHD compression, rather than H264, although H264 is pretty good! Might have to remortgage my house to buy it, but it'll be worth it...especially as I do a lot of winter sport vids too, and the Sony's circuitry looks to be far better than the VholdR for dealing with white balance, levels, image stabilisation and all that shizzle.

That sucks (about 10 months of no riding)

Yeah dude! You called that pretty right...it'll be 10 months on 24th May '09. I'm just about getting ready to have a ride again...just on-road Frown but my rig's gettin pimped, my HD helmet-cam's on it's way and I'm raring to go... What the hell did you do to your arm? Looks rare Wink

For mine, on the pain scale 5/10 (yours is clearly a 10/10, your arm gone BROKE), but the gnar scale is through the roof, however my "other injury" to me was a 10/10, read photo comments. Speaking of HD helmet-cam, in addition to mounting it on your helmet, build a rig and make some crazy angles, that thing is so light you could put it anywhere. No joke dude, if you look at my "Just Ride - XC" video (in "My Bike Films" in the climatic ending), your shots would look like that, they're sick angles. Totally film every major trail you go to and post them!

Snap! I almost de-balled myself about 10 year ago when I got hit by a skier my first time out snowboarding...his skis nearly ripped my two veg clean off! One week in a French hospital, 'undercarriage' the size of a melon, had to walk with a stick for 6 months...I kid you not! And no, no pictures...you wouldn't want to see Wink

And yeah, nice angles on the rig...I've done a bit of backwards and frame mounted stuff...looks awesome! Got some vids I shot, some my fiancĂ© shot, from my trip to Canada last year here: http://fraktiv.pinkbike.com/channel/Canada-2008/...more to come of 6-odd weeks in the French, Swiss and Austrian Alps (when I find time...)
