Press Release: YT Industries

All good things must come to an end,” they say. Good Times, however, last forever. YT Industries has had many of them with Vali Höll, Cam Zink, and Adolf Silva. We have won the World Championships together. We have flipped into Rampage together. We have even double flipped an E-MTB together. Today, we say farewell as they embark on their next adventures.

A True Young Talent

Vali Holl once again up to her winning ways in the Junior Women s race.

Nearly seven years ago YT announced the signing of a twelve-year-old mountain biker. The title of the announcement was ‘YT signs the 2022 Downhill World Champion’. Who would have thought back then the feat would become reality 4 years earlier? That young shredder was Valentina Höll from Saalbach, Austria. The goal was to continue supporting this Young Talent in every way possible until she was ready to take the next big step. If a pro career were to come from it, then this would be a massive achievement by everyone, but never an expected outcome. It turned out that Vali had even more fun and was even better at sending it than anyone could have anticipated. It was a pleasure to watch her grow and progress to become the fierce competitor she is today. The fact Vali has already celebrated two World Championships and World Cup overall titles is a testament to her courageous work ethic, perseverance, and dedication. Now, Vali turns the page for a new chapter of her career, and we all wish her only the very best and plenty of Good Times.

bigquotesThe past years have been amazing. Being able to take my first steps in World Cup Racing with YT and my SRAM TLD Team was a fantastic experience. The greatest memory of our time together is my perfect season. I look back on that and smile because I am proud of what we were able to accomplish as a team. Working together with YT was super relaxed and I was given a lot of room and all the time I needed to develop not only in racing but as a human being. I am very thankful for the Good Times together.Valentina Höll, 2018 & 2019 Junior World Champion

bigquotesIt feels like yesterday when I met Vali for the first time. She was eleven years old and already faster on the bike than most of the boys her age. I immediately felt we should support her because she was and still is the definition of a Young Talent. Vali was a perfect fit for YT. I’m very pleased and thankful to have had the chance of supporting her in becoming a professional athlete and World Champion. That’s precisely the DNA of YT. Thank you so much for the GOODTIMES Vali, it was a blast! All the best for the future, you’ll rock it!Markus Flossmann, Founder YT Industries

The Rampage Legend

Cam Zink getting the speed right before he tries his switch 360.

Cam Zink has been sending it big with YT since 2014. His Tues has eaten more Utah dust than any other and there are many memories we share. We have flipped into Rampage six times; lucky number seven sadly didn’t happen in 2020… We witnessed the freerider send a massive 360 Stepdown at Rampage in 2014 and his massive 100-foot backflip is a highlight for the ages. When things didn’t go according to plan you could always count on Cam for a comeback. Like in 2017 when he bounced back from his brutal crash during Rampage in 2016 to place second at the gnarliest event in mountain biking one year later. He once said: "If you have an opportunity to ride YT bikes why wouldn't you? Sickest bikes in the world and the only mountain bike brand that is run by a bunch of crazy misfits compared to the rest of the industry.” We both have come a long way a lot since then and can look back proudly on a lot of Good Times.

Go big or go home

Adolf Silva came out all guns blazing today and there s talk of a mid-run double flip if he s onto a good one in finals.

Adolf Silva is one of the gnarliest trick machines in mountain biking. Our time together was wild. The 23-year-old Spaniard is known to regularly break the internet while sending huge tricks on massive jumps at events like Dark Fest or Rampage. He has the world’s first Cali Roll on a big bike to his name since Audi Nines in 2018. Mentioning big bikes… Adolf took it to the next level during a shoot for the brand-new YT Decoy which was released in 2019. The Spaniard proved that the capabilities of E-MTBs know no limits by double-backflipping our Decoy in Spain.

A profit based internet bicycle anime marketing company that uses young talent and moves on to other young talent when the original young talent wants to actually get paid.

Ethan Neil and Dylan Stark for free riders.
In all honesty, I’ll be content if Dylan become the soul free rider on YT. Would be awesome for him to get a custom painted frame. And the fact that he has a fairly successful YouTube channel and it’s still growing only helps YT to keep him for the long haul.

I don’t really follow their EWS team, so some are there.

 customer service?

 @kroozctrl: what’s a “soul” free rider?
  • 12 1
@EnduroriderPL: Judging by the time it took them to service my Capra, they are bidding farewell soon too.

@mcozzy: ha ha ha so good

@KK11: someone who worships every Sunday maybe
  • 32 10
@kroozctrl: Dylan rips...but I doubt YT pays him other than floating him a few bikes. And his youtube channel is a scrap heap.
  • 7 2
@KK11: I think they meant "sole" as in only.
  • 8 1
@KK11: similar to a soul skater.

@kroozctrl: I dont think anyone follows their EWS team or even know that they have one

@DoubleCrownAddict: Did you forget the bit where they hired the world's highest-paid downhiller for a couple of years?
I'd wait and see who they have lined up for 2021.
I wouldn't even be surprised if it was Vali who had initiated the split.
  • 13 16
@Tobsa: I literally only learned that just now.

Maybe YT is determined to be the Yeti of the direct to consumer brands.
Sign a big name, build an image with the core DH crowd, part with riders as the pot of instant fame sales goes away since it doesn't match your mid-level budget, re-establish the brand with up and comers and let those riders peel off into bigger contracts every few years and sign the next generation, taking chances on people others won't.

Then in 5 years, dump any shred of your DH heritage and switch to making only dentist & cardiologist level builds from a relatively quiet town and only have a couple riders...
  • 32 11
@DoubleCrownAddict: Zink is young talent in your mind?

You also hilariously describe YT as finding young talent and then that talent moving on - isn’t that the point? Who else is helping young riders at that level?

I get it, YT make you an angry babba, but at least talk sense.
  • 6 0
 @Tobsa: yt has a ews team ?!
  • 61 4
@DoubleCrownAddict: YT is “profit based?” How terrible. They should be a non-profit charity bicycle company like everyone else. Thanks for pointing that out and educating us.
  • 9 2
@TypicalCanadian: the worst bit though is he has no idea if it’s about money, he’s just making stuff up.
  • 4 3
@chakaping: spot on. It looks like they are clearing the way (and more importantly the funding) to let loose on a serious EWS team with the new Capra.
Which big names in EWS are not yet signed?
  • 2 1
 Remi Thirion to YT/EWS?
  • 68 4
@DoubleCrownAddict: I don't see anything wrong with brands having some churn on athletes, and I don't see how "profit based" is some sort of inditement of the brand. In reality though, YT has supported quite a few legends of the sport beyond the peaks of their careers.

Still surprised about them splitting with Vali, after they invested so much time and energy into her program over the years and (from the outside anyway) appeared to manage her career in a really thoughtful way.

 @jaame: Now you're talking
  • 6 0
@DoubleCrownAddict: Pretty sure they paid Gwin quite a lot
  • 7 1
@brianpark: yeah, but she is literally the #1 female commodity in mountain biking. That means only those who can put together the #1 contract package will get her. We all know that can't be YT.

Gwin signing was different. He essentially brought all of his brands to a frame & pit/travel sponsor when he and Martin came on board.

Is she signed with Martin Whitley @captain23 or some other management group?
  • 1 0
@blowmyfuse: maybe she isn’t going to stop riding a YT after all, YT mob possibly?
  • 1 0
@jaame: Lewis Buchanan, katy winton, Martha Gill, Rumors that Ropelato is moving.

Gully off focus on the freeride side of things.
  • 11 2
@Trudeez: lol Gully to race EWS for YT. You heard it here first. Smile
  • 2 0
@brianpark: haha EWS circuits aren't gnarly enough for him! (I did qualify it by saying. . .on the freeride side of things).
  • 1 0
 @mcozzy: HAHAHAHA this!
  • 8 0
@brianpark: Vali rides for the Sram TLD team they are her main sponsor. It’s been a long time rumour that the team was looking for a new frame sponsor because YT is joining more with fox than sram. That’s probably the main reason. And for her the Sram TLD team is a bigger better support than just a frame deal so she made the right call in my opinion. Smile
  • 2 1
@Aranymag: A voice of reason! Life moves forward. The old leaves wither, die and fall away, and the new growth extends forward into the light.

  • 2 0
@chakaping: YT? Is simply doing what almost every coporation does when it hits tough times: cut marketing costs.
  • 2 1
 @mcozzy: *mic drop*
  • 2 0
Your assuming they split with her rather than the other way round but maybe you know something we don’t @brianpark:

  • 2 2
@brianpark: her contract was up and clearly Christopher Walken blew their load so they couldn’t afford to compete with dollars or support.
  • 2 1
Christopher Walken and that Jeffsey guy
  • 4 1
@brianpark: Brian as the attention this article and similar ones about the Pole receive I think it raises the important issue of customer service in the industry. There are some brands I wouldn’t touch even though I think they make nice bikes. It seems to be more of an issue for the forums rather than discussed directly by the mountain biking media - which I know can be a fine line for you guys. i think the role of customer service in the industry would be a great podcast episode for you guys.
  • 4 0
@enduroNZ: nope, the only thing I know is very few athletes actively want to change brands if the dollars make sense. Change is scary, most pros barely even want to change to new frame designs. Especially nowadays where everyone has pretty decent bikes. There are exceptions of course...
  • 11 2
@grugged: I had a YT and nothing went wrong with it. I think that's probably the experience of most actual customers. I have also read some shitty stories about terrible customer service but that's always the way with the internet isn't it? Happy customers are happily using whatever it is they bought. Disgruntled customers are talking about it on the internet.
It's a given that one will receive better after sales support when paying full whack from a local dealer. That's the risk you take to save the thousands of monies when buying a YT.
  • 2 1
@pioterski: so they're in the GTFO mode :]
  • 1 0
@jaame: You mean as a young talent?
  • 1 0
 @m1dg3t: Noway, really?
  • 1 0
 @KK11: exactly
  • 2 0
@Aranymag: If you watch her videos on social close enough, her mom is riding a new Scott bike. My money is on Scott for a frame sponsor.
  • 1 0
@Bripper32: from what I heard, YT wouldn't cut deals for family members so quite possibly the Scott was just cheaper for her. Big Grin #unsubstantiatedrumor
  • 1 1
 team internet
  • 2 2
@jaame: Yeah maybe but I think it's a tough one. There definitely may be some confirmation bias - but with companies like YT and Pole there have been so many issues from so many customers. I personally had a nightmare experience with YT which means I would never buy one of their bikes again. I have heard some, but not many examples of their good customer service. I think it is an interesting topic- as good customer service can really solidify brand loyalty whereas a bunch of brands just shoot themselves in the feet by failing to deliver/follow-up/ meet expectations
  • 1 1
@grugged: I think this is always the danger of buying direct sell bikes

@RonSauce: Rebellious doesn't pass a GMAT. Not necessarily because they can't, but because they'd shit on it and tell the person handing it to them to go f*ck themselves.
  • 3 3
@dmondave: this comment deserves more ‘likes’ than it’s received.
  • 3 3
@cwatt: Why? Its not even really relevant to the original post I made. Zinks comments are years old, while they hired that new CEO a month ago. Would seem even YT was in agreement with what I was saying because it looks like they brought in a CEO with the proper business background.
  • 2 0
@brodoyouevenbike: Depends on what they’re rebelling against. What if they are so rebellious that they’re rebelling against other rebels and the rebel way of life? Then they’d take that GMAT and pass with flying colors.

@Bripper32: Trek as a frame sponsor for Sram /TLD? They add a couple of riders to complete a second team.

 I bid farewell to YT
  • 67 5
I hope they take E.13 with them.
  • 5 4
@unrooted: this needs to be at the top
  • 6 1
@unrooted: serious question — what’s wrong with e13? Their components were/are on a lot of boutique bikes (I’m thinking Evil).
  • 2 1
@cwatt: BUTTERY SOFT RIMS!!!! Supposedly their carbon rims are fine. I won’t buy a bike with E.13 rims now, which leaves a lot of decent bikes off the table for my consideration. I’ll probably have to build my next bike up.
  • 1 0
@unrooted: Their Base rims were definitely a bit soft in recent years for some riders, but they have publically stated they have fixed that this year. This was also only an issue on their entry level OE rims. Their higher end Plus rims (which are almost never on OE bikes) are amazing. I know 2 heavy hitters in them and they’ve been super strong. Their carbon rims are rad as well, and their new Helix cassettes and dropper is getting great reviews too.

You didn't read the fine print did you... YT and Canyon bikes are LEASES. That's why they're so cheap. The repo man will be by shortly to take your baby away, unless you pay next year's fee.

@bonkmasterflex: Every time I think of the movie Repo Men, I can feel my heart beating strong until I miss a payment and they come unplug and repossess it with me lying there on the floor.

That movie is so damn realistic.

So, zink to commencal as kyle straits
teammate?
  • 5 7
 Or Evil?
  • 8 1
@learningcycles: not sure, but didn‘t evil and cam zink part ways in a bad way last time they sponsored him?
  • 3 3
@learningcycles: evil probably working in the ebike b4 a proper freerider
  • 9 3
@jrocksdh: They have the black label crew with Aggy, Genovese, Sorge and Norbs. That's pretty legit freeride crew.
  • 3 1
@Stokedonthis: Not sure. Just speculating as they signed some of the old free riders such as Aggy, Sorge and Norbs. But true there is some history there with Zink and Evil. Would love to see him with Strait on Commencal.
  • 3 1
@learningcycles: yup, new e coming tho
  • 3 1
@learningcycles: now they just need a freeride bike...
  • 9 0
@learningcycles: that move would never happen. Cam and Evil (Kevin) had a bad ugly baf falling out. Iirc Kevin owes Zink a bunch of money that he never made good on. One would hope that Evil is running a successful business now and made good on the debt but from what I've heard that hasn't happened.
  • 3 0
@TruckeeRiverTroll: thanks for the history, did not know what happened. Knew that once upon a time he rode for Evil.
  • 9 0
 Zink on Pyga for 2021?
  • 2 0
@SonofBovril: that's not that absurd actually. Doesnt Howie own their North American distributorship?? And they don't have a DH bike so maybe a development position too....
  • 1 0
@Stokedonthis: what happened the last time (Google didn’t produce anything)
  • 2 0
@cwatt: look at the response from TruckerRiverTroll
  • 4 1
@jrocksdh: Evil e-bike. For once a fitting name. Wink
  • 5 2
@TruckeeRiverTroll: Isnt this the same story with a different permutation generally with Evil: not warrantying bikes, leaving customers hung out to dry, not issuing recalls (Following frame bottom out), not paying filmographers, not paying their athletes.

Yet somehow people keep buying their bikes and just about every Pinkbike bike review has people complaining in the comments section that they don't review Evils.

Maybe Evil can hire Donald Trump to do a ad like the YT Jeffsy Christopher Walken one for their new e-bike. Word is he will be looking for a new pyramid scheme/scam and Evil bikes seems right up his alley.

Lol @ everyone throwing out some garbage theory. Pinkbike 101.
  • 11 5
YT must be struggling to pay athletes ????
  • 22 2
We don't know who they have signed up. But my guess is they currently don't need the athletes to sell the bikes so why not cut some overhead. Put that money into a better spec bike, or user experience or more likely it will beef up the profit margin. All those riders are on downhill bikes, so they may be just cutting marketing in that area. Which wouldn't be a surprise since it's the smallest market.
  • 5 0
@ajaxwalker: put tjat money into parts and staffing in san clemente so they can help the team there.
  • 17 0
To all companies, athletes are simply marketing tools. No different from ad campaigns. YT probably achieved what they wanted marketing wise: Breaking into the NA market big time. Now that they are well known there and internationally, they might not need them anymore.

But who knows, maybe they will pick up another couple athletes in the big end-of-year pro carousel.
  • 3 0
@ajaxwalker: I think you hit it on the head.
  • 56 2

My guess is that since they don't have the purchase power of the big brands to stay at the front of the order que with frame manufacturers and component companies, they are having an insane time getting anyone to push their orders through.

There are going to be millions of frames hitting the shipping lanes in the near future, all from the mega-brands and destined for salivating consumers to get something with '2021' attached to it. Got to think YT is the odd man out?
  • 2 0
Must be, you said so, got to be true.

  • 4 0
Do they still have Dylan Stark?!?!?!
  • 5 0
I think he and Stiiinggggyyyyy are on more of a flow deal and YT is getting massive bang out of their buck. If they stopped supporting Dylan Stark then I would have to step back and reevaluate my invaluable support.

 Zink for hyper 2021

yt is a failing non existent company, if you tried to contact costumer service u know what i mean, no email reply phone line is disconnected. I know personally 2 cases of broken frames that never got replaced and yt claims that packages were lost by their own delivery company. 1 year later the owners still have no frame and no contact from yt. hope no new athletes sign with them, their company is total crap.

so is Zink not gonna be YT's north america distributor anymore? or is there going to be some kind of conflict on interest with his sponsor and his YT distribution?
  • 2 0
That ended a few years ago.
  • 3 0
The Zinks haven't been for like three years now. YT moved North American distribution to southern California. Howie has been distributing Pyga out of Reno for a couple of years.
  • 2 1
@Trudeez: Howie is the man wherever he is.
  • 4 1
 What’s a YT
  • 4 1
 Tldr. part ways.
  • 3 1
Commencal will take them over 3
  • 2 1
Zink and YT seemed like a really good fit. Hope someone gives him a good deal
  • 7 3
To do what, exactly? Buy 911s?
  • 1 0
Vali to Giant per her trainer's comment on Instagram - "Ready for a Giant leap!"
  • 1 0
Maybe but her mother was riding a Scott frame in a video on her IG and generally that means something. My Money is on a TLD-Sram-Scott team.
  • 2 0
Vali Höll to SCS as their first female rider........
  • 2 0
Hopefully they sponsor Intense so Gwin can get back to the top!
  • 3 2
You cant use people to build your brand and then dump them. Now the mtb world will dump YT
  • 4 0
 Kinda like your boi Trump.
  • 2 0
 Aggy to YT?
  • 2 1
He has only been on Evil for 2 years, and he is on a good package, so doubt he will leave

 Parts ways*
  • 1 0
Yeah, did pb bid farewell to parts ways? That's lame, I thought they were so committed to that.
  • 1 0
Didn’t yt also say farewell Andreu Lacondeguy
  • 2 0
 About one year ago yes.
  • 1 0
Yeah he's been on Commencal since departing YT.
  • 1 4
There is no difference for any brand out there ☹, and I was so naive that YT was. Even as they mention it on Zink's comment: ” run by a bunch of crazy misfits compared to the rest of the industry.” They are not so crazy as even Zink fought and I see that this must be disappointing. There is pressure from riders for a different concept of cooperation because sustainability is not here. The world is changing now and might bring new thinking I hope.
This ''family business must change'' somehow. You can not live with them for more than 5 years and then just go.

Shame on YT.
  • 3 1
Psssssst -we are commenters on a website and actually know fvckall about what is happening at YT or other brands and what 'their' riders want to do with their lives.
  • 1 0
@suspended-flesh: I would say is it simple, you are the athlete and you want this and we do not comply. But In marketing, they build buyers' emotions to the family athletes so deep that you cannot simply let them go. That is why you see a lot of comments here. If YT marketing would be more generic then no emotion raised.
  • 1 0
@MartSkier: OK fair enough. I don;t take their roster choices personally. I had a YT before Gwin was signed and thought it was a completely weird choice to hire the milquetoast Christian. Then I realized it's all business and not emotions.
  • 2 2
Looks like Zink’s statement was curt Smile probably not a good split. Wonder if his MAGA ways clashed with the Germans.
  • 1 0
 We know nothing.
  • 1 0
So who is going to be riding for YT now? Eek
  • 1 0
 Hopefully the Denim Destroyer
  • 2 0
 I’d take Vali

It’s looking very strange! Everyone is leaving every team but yet no 1 has signed new deals! Bloody Covid ????
  • 6 0
Can't say bloody covid when sales are through the roof.
  • 5 0
new deals don't go into effect til the new year almost always in this industry.
  • 9 1
It's the same every year. Just wait a bit and all the new signings will be announced
  • 4 0
@learningcycles: sadly making money never stopped anyone to fire anybody
  • 1 0
The new signings are revealed after Jan 1 for contractual reasons.
  • 2 1
@learningcycles: tell me about it i ordered a propain at the start of September and still no sign of it ????????
  • 1 0
@learningcycles: not since inventory dried up tho
  • 1 1
@fracasnoxteam: lol, they all had contracts silly
  • 4 0
@learningcycles: maybe you could. I have no idea what these teams are thinking but it could work both ways. While COVID has caused a spike in sales it’s also cancelled most of the major races and events where sponsored riders are seen. So with uncertainty going into next year team may be hesitant to sign riders when there is still a possibility that they won’t get to fully showcase their teams again next year.
  • 1 2
not how it works, mate. all the new contracts are likely signed but embargoed. wait until mid January and it will be wall to wall riders getting new rides.
  • 3 1
@learningcycles: Yea the big push to "Lets get everyone on MTB's... their Aunt, Uncle, Grandparents, Mom, Dad, etc.,etc...."! Then We'll turn all land into an Amusement Park and yeild to all E-biker's and people lingering on the gap landings fixing their flat tires and leaning their bikes on others when they go inside to shit!
  • 1 0
 @jrocksdh: nooo really?
  • 2 0
@chakaping: Next week is going to be some good reading on the boss's dime.
