World of X Games to Host 'Real Mountain Bike' Video Competition

PRESS RELEASE: ESPN

Now in its 12th year, the Real Series adds the first-ever Mountain Bike competition to the 2021 lineup with Real Mountain Bike debuting in April on ESPN2. The competition will showcase the sport’s biggest names, reconnecting Mountain Bike with X Games for the first time since 2013.

As many large scale events were being put on hold in early 2020, the Real Series became the backbone of X Games competition, with teams of athletes and filmers creating original content all around the globe. Real Mountain Bike joins that crew in 2021, by inviting six athletes to produce their best 90-second video parts, capturing their own unique style and competing for X Games medals. The invited riders are Cam Zink, Veronique Sandler, Brandon Semenuk, Danny MacAskill, Brage Vestavik and DJ Brandt.

“I grew up completely captivated by the X Games, and it was the ultimate dream to be one of the competitors”, said Guinness World Record holder Cam Zink. “I envied my friends who were competing in snowboarding, FMX, and BMX - and after MTB was included in the Munich X Games, I always knew that Mountain Biking would have to find its way back, but I thought I might be too old... I’m beyond elated to be one of the first 6 MTB athletes to be competing for an X Games Gold in the Real Video Series!”

The six individual Real Mountain Bike athlete segments debut on XGames.com, followed by a one-hour Real Mountain Bike episode on ESPN2 as part of the World of X Games programming. The episode will feature video parts, behind-thescenes footage, athlete interviews, judge feedback and awarding of the medals. In addition, fans will have a chance to view and vote for their favorite video online. The fan favorite winner will be awarded a $5,000 cash prize.

Additional information on Real Series 2021 competitions will be forthcoming and available on XGames.com.

apples and oranges with that rider list but still jazzed to see some edits
  • 11 0
Definitely. Will probably make it harder to judge but might make for some better entertainment.. lots of variety!
  • 18 1
Thats how they do it. In bmx you have erik elstran vs garrett reynolds.

How is Dylan Stark not on the riders list?? Let him in!
  • 6 4
@dennisbarrera: I enjoy watching Dylan and he's a hell of a rider. But he's not a "household" name like those 6 listed.

"YAP YAP YAP ThEy ReAlLy ShOuLd HaVe InViTeD _______ YAP YAP"

......but really, where is Kade??
  • 22 0
 YAP YaP is overrated.
  • 4 0
Exactly what I though... Just throw Kade, Kaos, Atwill and Vestavik in there, and get ready to never want to pick a bike again
  • 36 2
Nothing real about any of those contestants riding. If they want real I've got some average gopro footage to throw in the ring

"I swear it looked bigger in real life"

"You can't see it but that is a massive cliff"

"Just behind me off camera there was a bear, I swear!"

DJ and Brage are going to slay it. Stoked for this shit.
  • 25 2
So They're just giving Semenuk $5k? honestly though i think DJ is gonna suprise people but i also hope he goes more creative and doesn't just ride Utah spots.

Exactly my thoughts. These guys just keep beating a dead horse IMO. Every time I look online, it’s the same stuff over n over n over n over n over again and again... Hey look! Another shot In Utah! Oh wow!!! Or hey, look! Another edit/pic at whistler!!! Or hey, another edit/pic at highland!!! Oh man!!! Can’t wait to see the same stuff I’ve seen shots of and video of over n over for the last 15 years again and again!!! Stop slapping the same horse. Give us a reason to actually hit that like button again!

Fingers crossed that someone actually goes for an old school urban freeride edit. Then again, it would be hard to top out Mr. Wibmer

 dj will not disappoint
  • 2 0
@ExiTwelve: Are you shocked that people that spend 95% of their time in Utah post media of riding in Utah?
  • 1 0
@nickgarrison: I think my original comment may have been misunderstood. I was agreeing with what @jimjoy666 was saying in regards to how Semenuk and Walker always seem to go above and beyond to give us an original idea/edit to get us to hit that like button, opposed to how everyone else seems to just go out and ride and film the same things over n over expecting people to be blown away by the same thing over n over. I have nothing against seeing stuff from Utah, Whistler, Highland, etc, etc.. My thing is just give me/us something different that gets us fired up to go out n ride our bikes. An example of that would be how Remy went out and showed us there’s different ways to ride the same ole trails in the Whistler bike park than everyone else has been telling us how to ride them. All @jimjoy666 was saying and what I was agreeing with, was DJ has a good shot at winning this thing as long as he just doesn’t go out and film the same old shit he’s been riding over n over all the time in the desert. It’s all great and I greatly appreciate all of what’s going on out there, don’t get me wrong, but you can only see and watch the same hits, trails, features, etc.. etc.. ridden over n over again before you just stop watching all together, hence my beating a dead horse comment. I’m hoping DJ goes out and digs an original one of a kind line that reflects his style, and that he goes out an rides the shit outta it and blows our minds.

These guys deserve more than $5,000 for the winning video. That might cover travel and cost for the winning crew.
  • 4 1
For sure. I'd hope they're paying for production separately, unless the whole crew is just driving somewhere, camping out and eating ramen that's a shoestring budget.
  • 6 2
Unless you win this, you will probably lose money. Actually you will probably lose money even if you win. Nice of X-Games to have athletes to do almost free content for them. Disgrace.
  • 10 0
the 5k prize is just for the viewers choice prize. Typically, REAL-X athletes have gotten 30k to split between filmer and rider for the winner in other disciplines.
  • 16 1
This is going to blow minds, I can’t wait! X Games is such a legendary event in my mind, it’s up there with Rampage and World Champs. So stoked for these lucky riders!
  • 6 0
too bad the x games one experience with mtb was that slopestyle in munich. the Real series has been awesome to follow in the other sports. stoked to see big bikes getting in!
  • 5 0
@adrennan: not true, OLD SKOOL (winter) X-Games had downhill racing!
  • 3 0
@adrennan: and lest we forget the first x-games (when it was The Extreme Games) had a trials competition.
  • 11 0
My hope is that Zink lives through the crazy stuff he’s going to be trying.

Semenuk or Madskills for the win though. They’ll have Lucas and Spielberg directing and gravity logic building the features.
  • 14 1
Dont forget they also added break dancing!
  • 2 0
 Say what?
  • 3 0
@mxwhitey And, same number of female and male athletes for first time in history.
  • 12 1
5k to the winner? Oh how X-Games have fallen. You could lose money even if you win it (content creation is not free).
  • 2 0
True and false; true back in the day 1st place was 25k. But, all athletes have gotten checks just for showing up. At least that's how it was.
  • 12 3
This would have been right up Sam Pilgrim’s alley
  • 8 2
5K??! for the winner?!? what year is this. Do they think the risks they take to put those edits together really only worth that much. Disney you are a joke.
  • 5 1
It does make you wonder how they came up with this list. I guess someone was an alternate for Rheeder - since he won the X-Games MTB. Having Rogatkin, Pilgrim & Fabio would have made it an epic All-Stars list......
  • 5 0
This will be epic. If you've seen real moto, you know. Cool to see a few underdogs and a lady in there too.

Good to see X-games acknowledge MTB again. The video series seems like a good fit for it too.
