Jack Moir's Rotorua iXS Downhill winning Intense M16c.

Today in Rotorua, Jack Moir came out and showed a number of his World Cup competitors that he's been putting in work during the off-season. With the likes of Brosnan, Bruni, Hannah, Jackson, and more here, taking the win was no easy feat. What was a real surprise was his tire choice, with Jack opting for the well-rounded Minion, despite a week worth of wet conditions and a lot of other racers, including his teammate, Dean Lucas, opting for cut spike style treads. It didn't seem to phase Jack though and he won with a couple of seconds to spare. We caught up with Jack and Dean after the race to learn more about their bike setups for the day and how they differ.

Bike Details
• Intense M16c

Any customizations or peculiarities?
• Super particular about the bike being quiet.

We should go back to 26" wheels.

Huh? Did I miss the part that said they were on 26" wheels.. I say bring on the 29ers !!!
  • 9 2
Just wait. Like everything else, it "will" come back strong again.
  • 6 5
 I have a 26" Wilson. I'm saving for a 275 wheel though
  • 2 1
 Amen brother!
  • 5 1
Meet ya there - I never left
  • 1 0
 @slickwilly1: intense has em...
  • 18 1
Wow a bunch of haters on here. It's funny how the bike that got first has no prototype this or that. You can literally order what they are riding. So glad I own one. Can't wait to see these guys in World Cup this yr. keep it up intense.

Has anyone purchased an Intense from this company? www.bikeexchange.com/a/full-suspension-mountain-bikes/intense/ca/irvine/m16c-expert-build/105731360

They have what looks like brand new Expert builds for $4,500 just wondering because it looks like a great spec to price.

Nice to see.... funny how there's a whole crop of stems out there that drop your bar to the height of your top crown, when all the high level racers (not just Intense) appear to run their bars pretty high up.
  • 5 0
Amen! I frigging hate low bars, even have spacers and 30mm rise on my 29er!
  • 1 0
@pimpin-gimp: ditto this, spacers and 40mm bar! Upright is right.
  • 3 0
@Twenty6ers4life: yeah i have progressively got a lower cockpit i think through fashion really. And I kinda realised recently a higher cockpit is the one for me
  • 3 0
@jordanchaos: I think you're right about the "fashion" part. I think about where I could have sped up the last couple years and it's on the steep descents. I can always weigh down the front wheel more and improve my cornering technique, but when it comes to steep tech, having that higher cockpit just has a better mechanical advantage.
  • 1 0
@chrisrobin: I used to ride with a crazy high cockpit. I think I'm going to move back towards the middle ground. Pair of the Spank 50mm risers should do it
  • 10 0
@pinkbike how about a toolbox check around the pits? That shot of the mechianics tool box in the background looked pretty nice
  • 2 0
Maybe we'll see about something like this for Sea Otter?
  • 2 0
Yes! The gmbn guys did a few of these and they're awesome

It's a intense with enves.. Great!! Where's the f---kn replay???????? Ahhhhhhh
  • 12 0
No replay because it wasn't broadcast. The weather issues that they had in Rotorua was the cause. Unfortunate.
  • 2 1
 @AJBarlas: That's such a bummer!
  • 5 0
I've been running those ENVE DH 48mm rise bars on my 16' UZZI for over a year. I'm running a FOX 36, with zero spacers under my Thompson stem. The height is perfect ill never go back to lower bars. This is my first Intense brand bike. I absolutely love it.
  • 1 0
Stoked to hear that you are riding a 16 Uzzi. A bit off topic here, but how does it rides compared to say a modern 160 bike?
  • 2 0
@AlexS1: To be honest it climbs great and is a great descender. Its my only bike and I have no regrets. I've always ridden 6"+ travel bikes. Santa Cruz Bullit, 2013 UZZI, 2014 FOES FXR, and now the 16 UZZI. The 16 UZZI is so much better than any of the previous bikes I've owned. No comparison. How it stacks up against a full on enduro bike? I'm not sure. But I'm happy as can be to have a great climbing bike with $190 mm of travel. It's very deceiving because it feel like much less on the climb. I've got all XX1, RF NEXT cranks, E13 Carbon rims with Swiss 240 hubs, ENVE bars HOPE brakes, tubeless wheels etc. about as light as you can build it.
Hope this helps.

@Doomsdave: You sir have a really nice ride there. Thank you so much for the feedback.
  • 5 0
So Jack is running Boxxer Team's instead of World Cup's. Interesting!
  • 12 0
Yeah, a lot of the top guys do that, the only difference between them is that the team has a coil spring instead of air. Means there's no change in spring rate due to heating
  • 4 1
@cjkj1999: And a coil feels better to many people (Even I can say the difference, so I can only imagine how big this difference must feel for the top guys like them!)
  • 3 1
yeah it seems a fair majority of top WC guys that have the option of a coil (i.e rock shox riders) run coil forks as they prefer them.
  • 5 0
 Make coil forks great again
  • 1 0
@adrennan: when did they go bad?
  • 4 0
the proliferation of 650b effectively removing 26" from the mix makes me really worry about the future of coil DH forks.

I still ride my 26" DH bike, but I'm sure eventually I'll be forced to get a new bike (similar to what happened with my AM rig), and I'll end up biting the bullet and getting 650B.

Thing is...the 650B switch was at least manageable.

On the other side, I've ridden air DH forks and absolutely hate them.

Please keep coil alive bike industry.....

Damn, loving those 48mm rise enve bars.......yea boys!
  • 2 1
I am curious what the advantages are for a $175 carbon riser bar that weighs the same as a Diety Topsoil for $70. Or an Answer 810 for $59. I'm not trying to troll here, just curiousWink
  • 2 0
@LOTCP: oh so sexy in the pics lol. That's what they are good for lol.

He's running an "extra firm coil and 2 preload spacers" in Boxxer forks?
  • 3 0
Gotta love those Chris King hubs! I've got a set in black on my rig!
  • 2 0
Everything seems to be awesome. Spring system of MB keeps me straight.
  • 3 1
looks light. shame there is no weight

 M16 = Magic
  • 2 0
And they're not resting, intense has new bikes being tested.(new linkage design) 29 and 275
  • 2 1
My OCD won't let it go - it's "faze" not "phase."
  • 1 0
 @Dean
Do you think Shorty 2.5 front, DHF 2.5 rear could have been better?
  • 1 0
why did they ever make it in red?
  • 1 1
Is it just me or does the Intense look similar to the V10?
