Wait when did Kona move across the border
  • 12 1
@5chmaus: uh since forever. They're a Canadian company
  • 13 1
@5chmaus: Kona was Canada before Canada was Canada foo! I oughta beat you with a Syncros revolution crank arm for even saying that.
  • 5 1
@garrisond5: lmao. I just thought their headquarters was in Ferndale but I guess that must've just been the US office.
  • 11 1
Wow awesome reply Kona. You guys are awesome giving him a chance. He really has a heart of gold.
  • 25 1
JUST GREAT TO SEE THAT KONA STEPS IN!
I came here to say, there must be a brand that values your positive and personal (emotional) approach to life and to your "hunting my dream" attitude. You may have not been the best "rider" by the standards of this format, but you will engage with your community and with the people around so much that you will surely find your spot in this sporting business and comunity.

I felt sad and angry at the same time when they ruled you out. You are a great person in heart and this is much more valuabel than spinning the cranks harder.
We wont some mexican style in the next Kona release Wink

Good attitude @konaworld , good marketing for your brand.

Someone mentioned a training tv/ program for him showing gains.
Also highlighting his country’s riding spots.

@rscreen: riders could follow the training program as well?

Kona is not just a life style brand but is one of the original attitude/how the world can benefit from bikes brands.

@konaworld: You are everywhere, but oddly enough, I have a hard time connecting you to Hawaii, despite your name. Still, like your original comment here, and am a proud Kona rider.

Does Alaina have a BMX background? Can't remember if she has a BMX background. Maybe it's someone else that has a BMX background. Do YOU have a BMX background?
  • 80 0
With a BMX background, it can help with skills that come from having a BMX background, if you have a BMX background.
  • 109 2
My background in bong rips and donut binges would have really disadvantaged me in the FTP test but admittedly this would have been offset by my bike’s ep8 motor. We all have our strengths and weaknesses.
  • 10 0
 I used to race BMX.
  • 22 0

Do you have a BMX bike I can use ?
  • 1 0
@spaztronaut: It's 2021. We can't be so bold as to ask for a type of bicycle. You will ride something with two wheels and you will be thankful the wheels are mostly round. You may present your request again in 2024.

I’ve definitely heard somewhere that she has a BMX background.

I'm quite disappointed with the elimination. I mean, if I were looking for an ambassador for my brand, I would definitely want the best athlete possible. But if I had to choose between two people who reach the bottom of the ranking, I would prefer the one who at the end of the race is happy to have participated, who stops to sign some autographs to the fans, or one who continues to have a positive attitude and above all who does not complain but knows that he can work to improve
  • 104 1
Fully agree. I don't think an EWS sponsorship is necessarily the thing for Israel but a brand should definitely hire him to build the sport in Latin America and Mexico
  • 101 0
I think if it had been at all close, Israel would've stayed around, but he was so far back their hands were kinda tied.
  • 29 0
I have a feeling the message from Christina and Gully was pointed directly across one person's bow.
  • 10 0
@buckwheat23: they were saying "we didn't eliminate you but these are your problems you need to fix"
  • 23 3
@Fullsend2-13: If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it certainly isn't a beaver. You can't teach a good attitude. Cody can try all he wants, but it is very unlikely you are fixing a bad attitude. It's easy to see through an act when it comes to your emotions during competition.
  • 6 2
@buckwheat23: FA. keeps the show interesting I guess! Gotta have people like him on...
  • 28 0
Israel's attitude and passion is great, but at the end of the day, this is a racing sponsorship and he was fairly beaten by a couple of the women in the race and was last in fitness.
  • 25 1
@buckwheat23: A person can fix a bad attitude.
  • 13 0
I was really rooting for Israel. He was so positive, genuine, and determined. The judges see more than we do with our limited edit. moral can sometimes change with the flip of a switch... fitness level, not so much. Its possible that the judges thought that Cody's attitude could come around faster than Israel's fitness level.
  • 20 1
@buckwheat23: man, my attitude can be fixed with a damn snickers sometimes. what you talkin' bout? He got a chance at turning this around, not a great chance, but a chance lol
  • 4 0
@deepstrut: Ha, I forgot about the Snickers prescription. Touche...
  • 5 0
@deepstrut: Israel was so slow. Could see that immediately.
  • 12 0
@buckwheat23: man, it’s unfortunate you feel that way. I’ve coached a fair number of subordinates out of bad attitudes at work. It takes effort and a lot more than comments like: you need to fix your attitude. However, I’ve seen a lot of growth out of some people who were entirely negative and written off by plenty.

I highly recommend the book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Dweck. I think it or a coach well versed in the ideas of the book would help Cody.
  • 1 1
 UPVOTE!!!
  • 18 0
@sonuvagun: Agreed I hate this attitude (no pun intended) of oh you have a bad attitude therefor you're useless. There are many under pinning's that can give someone a bad attitude, mental health, self confidence ect can all make you have a poor attitude, it doesn't just instantly mean you're a raging a*shole. That's a big problem in our society, people see a symptom and then attack a person based on that symptom because idk maybe it makes them feel uncomfortable or something?
  • 3 0
@inside-plus: I like how you communicated that.
  • 7 0
@buckwheat23: What are you talking about, of course one's attitude can be fixed/improved. That's way more realistic than the prospect of getting Israel even remotely within range of the others' fitness and skill level.
  • 2 0
@whambat: downloaded. Thx. Will take any advantage I can get
  • 3 0
@inside-plus: Hey! What's the matter with being a raging a*shole? I happen to pride myself on my a*sholery.
  • 1 0
@mutton: I hope you like it. I got it recommended to me from a friend, who is the head of a ski team, who said it was required reading for all his coaches. It’s also required reading for teachers at a lot of high performing schools. Duckworth also references it during her Ted Talk on how to obtain Grit.
  • 2 0
@Stoaks: All the power to you my friend
  • 2 0
Sorry, late to the dance here, but a lot of you have hit the nail on the head. First, while Israel has a great attitude, he just doesn’t have the physical talents it’s going to take to win this. Not even close. He was leaving sooner or later, but he’s just outmatched. On the bright side, Kona Bikes seems to like him, so hopefully he can live a little bit of his dream with their help.

Someone else said it — Cody is not a bad person, nor does he have a bad attitude. But he has an unforgiving mindset toward himself. He can change at some point in his life, but he won’t change it in the course of season 2. He will do well on challenges and stick around for a while, but eventually it will be his downfall.

If it happened in episode 3, hush! I’m catching up.
  • 81 0
The cruelest part of this test? - only 3 vom buckets. That means sharing. You're monsters, PB.
  • 31 0
And Cody put one on his head? Oy Bucketheed!
  • 79 7
I know I'm in the minority, but I was glad to see Cody be able to stick around for another episode to try to fix his attitude issues. I'm more interested to see if he can figure that out than to see if Israel can even remotely catch up to the pack pace-wise.

If it's still like this next week? See ya.

I think Cody is just a more interesting, articulate dude than Israel. And a better rider. Glad he stuck around.
  • 22 22
Can't teach a good attitude. You can only put a face on for so long...
  • 23 6
@buckwheat23: not everyone needs to have a happy happy attitude all the time. And, like it's realistic that some people would be bummed if they did worse than they expect of themselves. And if nothing else, it makes for better reality tv!
  • 5 1
@withdignityifnotalacrity: It seems like the aspect of creating good tv is more on the mind of Cody than competing for a job. Although I agree you can't be happy all the time, a company signing your checks and paying for your plane tickets may think otherwise when in front of the camera... a professional needs to know when / how to control their emotions. Know how to win, but more importantly know how to lose.

Side note: I understand this is "reality" tv.
  • 41 9
I love how "I'm frustrated with my race today" and "geez, this gearing isn't right for this FTP test" is enough to label somebody as having a bad attitude. I sure hope there's more going on behind the scenes, because nothing that I've seen of Cody suggests "toxic attitude".
  • 2 0
I wouldn’t worry @buckwheat23: I have a feeling he won’t see the competition to the end as a competitor.

I get that passion and showing emotion shouldn’t be judged but there was always an excuse given, always has something to say but will he actually needs to do a big amount of effort to reverse this profile.
  • 7 0
"I'm more interested to see if he can figure that out than to see if Israel can even remotely catch up to the pack pace-wise."

----

I agree for the sole fact that the kind of speed differential is at least a year of solid training for Israel to catch-up....far more than however many days they have to run this contest. It only takes one life-changing event to completely change someone's perspective.
  • 16 3
@Jamminator: I completely concur dude. @pinkbike: you may need to create a spin-off series about taking Israel “from grassroots to jumping trees”.
Set a training programme for him and get him recording his personal progress and how doing so in Mexico adds a different perspective.
  • 9 0
@2-1RacingUK: Genius! Like, they take some sort of...I dunno...privateer, or something like that...and they give him factory level support and track his progress. I think you're really on to something!
  • 24 0
Cody shows a little emotion and PB commenters give him shit about it.

Semenuk barely shows emotion and PB commenters give him shit about it.

The 98% of us in the middle just want to see someone rip trails up.
  • 8 1
@takeiteasyridehard: And Gee Atherton, whos contributed more to this sport than most and is respected by everyone. He was notoriously moody in his competitive years.
  • 3 0
@buckwheat23: You're so wrong it's kinda funny to read Smile
  • 1 0
@dirktanzarian: there’s more to it than that!
  • 2 0
@dirktanzarian: I hear you. I didn't see that much personally that led to my comment about his attitude. It was more about the pretty brutal comments from the judges that leads me to believe it was worse than what we saw on screen.
  • 5 1
@buckwheat23: Cody doesn't have a bad attitude, he just puts a lot of pressure on himself. Got to admit I was pulling for the guy being a fellow American and all.
That said, he doesn't seem to have the speed nor the fitness of the top men. He didn't really lose that much time in episode 1 when he went off line but was well off the times.
Anyways, they will likely ditch a female next time so it'll likely be the Pilates instructor. Nice enough gal but her fitness is just not there.
I'm certain every rider that was chosen for PB Academy before they arrived rode as much as possible. But in reality there was much more to be gained in overall speed by working on off the bike fitness for several of these riders. If you can't sprint across the finish line there is a real issue.
  • 1 0
@dirktanzarian: hahaha. The premise of this idea is the personality of Israel, not the idea of a competition based show but, yes- it sounds just something else, doesn’t it. LIKE EVERY OTHER SHOW ON TV……
  • 1 1
Hey @SunsPSD: “ Cody doesn't have a bad attitude, he just puts a lot of pressure on himself.”
I may not be an expert but I’d say most people studying physiology would call that a personal ‘Attitude’ towards his efforts as bad.
If you act like a teenage girl who didn’t get chosen as the prom queen, sulks about it in an extroverted manor and then can’t be criticised for it, is that really the type of ambassador a brand would wish to have enrolled.

The production team and hosts have portrayed it and I have a feeling not all of it has been shown in this last two episodes. Adversely, they could have hyped it up more than what it was. That’s the power of media and it’s got us all talking about it. Remind you of anything?!

Cody, I hope you found it within yourself to reassess your personal process and it helped you to progress through the show.

The peak elevation is 7,290 ft (2221.99m), mid mountin it is most likely 5500ft (1676.4m).
  • 48 8
Israel should get a pinkbike job like Tom did first season. Would love to have him as the Latin American correspondent to highlight sweet riding vacation areas and grow the sport locally.
  • 12 0
That would be pretty sick actually. The Commencal Mexico edit has really wetted my appetite for the riding scene south of the border.

  • 1 0
 @elyari: they can't him!
  • 25 0
Attitude aside, I think people would be silly to write off Cody. I remember watching him in the pump track competition in Whistler in the mid 2010s. I think he went up against Mitch Ropelato in the finals in a stacked field, so he's super quick. Hopefully being this close to elimination motivates him to have a more positive attitude.
  • 25 2
Anyone notice that the German lady (Laura Zeitschel) was shown very little in this episode.

Emmet has an absolute advantage being that he is a local rider to Big White. Without a doubt, he did win the FTP test; props to him for that. Too bad they couldn't have this contest on a mountain that nobody had ridden.
  • 16 1
IIRC he doesn't live there anymore? And everyone had 2 weeks to get familiar with the terrain. I acknowledge he probably knows secret lines etc. but I wouldn't attribute too much of his result to that.

Emmet's time difference to the next man was similar to Flo's over the next woman and she's not a local. Both similarly close to secret pros. I think they're both simply that fast.

Also he didn't just win the FTP test, he blew them out of the water. Like, not close. A fraction separating him from the pro. Which suggest to me his race win was no coincidence.

So exciting to see those super talented guys because we know when Emmet or Flo get that contract they won't be pack fill at EWS, we'll definitely be hearing about them. Tori could be a dark horse. The most athletic woman there, though can she catch up with Flo's speed?
  • 18 0
Israel is for sure a great ambassador. But it looks like it is more focus on racing on that one.
You need the attitude AND the speed. Israel had a slower time than the fastest women’s and a low power ratio. It would take a long time for him to get to speed.
Cody will likely be the next one to go as he admitted he didn’t want it as much as Israel did
  • 22 0

  • 2 0
 @waldo-jpg: hopefully he'll get a brand deal
  • 18 2
Imagine wearing a backwards baseball cap for an FTP test. LOL looking fresh though.
  • 5 0
Probably wasn't allowed to wear a non-sponsor brand roadie cap to keep sweat out of the eyes...so had to make do.
  • 2 0
I do it all the time man, keeps sweat out and lets the fan blow in your face. Feels good!
  • 13 0
Cody just needs to learn to use his drive positively. If he can that drive can be an asset. Hope he can reset and make some adjustments.
  • 11 0
I'm surprised that a few of these contenders haven't done an FTP test in preparation for this contest. Simply watching last season would have given an indication that it was a high possibility!
  • 10 0
Yah yah Cody blah blah blah, Isreal blah blah blah. Thats just the Tv drama stuff apparently most of love. Spoiler my money is on Flo winning this thing. Total package. She already rides like a pro. She has the times. She has the right attitude. She has the right fitness. Im sure there will be a bunch more survivor/bachelorette episodes. Personally i just want to see the races.
  • 5 0
Emmet or Flo for sure. Flo is a known entity and also brings diversity. However Emmet is very young and very good, lots of room to grow.
  • 9 0
The true loser is Israel's Academy journal "Lost a race, rode in a glasshouse" Oct 21

To be fair, with his attitude, he'll never lose a thing.
  • 8 1
I like all the contestants and they all say this is an opportunity of a lifetime and I struggle to understand some the contestants lack of fitness. It’s easy for me to say why aren’t these guys in better shape but still. A once in a lifetime opportunity usually would mean you do all that you can do to prepare for that opportunity.
  • 6 0
It's just that some of the top guys are competitive enduro racer level fit, which takes years to build.
  • 10 2
Look forward to watching it later. The first episode was very well done and much more enjoyable than last season. Well done, PB.
  • 7 1
If Israel was American, everyone would be slating his cringe over enthusiastic bro attitude.
Based of results he was 100% the right candidate to eliminate.
Personally, I don't think he should of been there in the first place as his place could of been filled by someone with more skill/ability and more of a chance of actually competing regardless of where they are from...
  • 8 2
Cody is a great dude. Grew up around the local with group rides and such and always a good energy. He strikes more as a passionate racer thats self critical, because he knows he can do better rather than a poor attitude
  • 7 0
I love how the resort is higher than our highest mountain here lol props to Cameron for dealing with it
  • 3 0
 Cameron lives in Vancouver.
  • 2 0
@jaydawg69: I must have missed that part in first episode
  • 18 0
@jaydawg69: I mean isnt the elevation of vancouver like 10 feet? Its close to mountains but not at elevation itself.
  • 1 4
@wilsonians: I'd be curious what athlete there lives at elevation. Most of them are coming from sea level towns.
  • 9 3
Malditas cawamas. Estupidas y deliciosas cawamas!!
  • 6 1
 Ariba ariba!!
  • 15 8
 Cody be toxic
  • 4 0
He'll need to work on his attitude, otherwise he's the next one to go!
  • 8 0
I wouldn't say holding oneself to high standards is "toxic". He was also so much faster than Israel I'm not surprised he stayed. But yeah, chasing an ambassador role he'll need to learn to control what emotions he shows or he's gone next week.
  • 3 0
Remember that a lot of this is in the editing. Maybe they're just creating a narrative, so that in a future episode they can focus on how he redeems himself. Also - he seemed to suggest he didn't have any practice time on the track - maybe he was a late entrant or something.
  • 3 0
Lets all remember that this is a reality show - meaning - nothing is real. All is script and/or manipulative and suggestive editing.

As far as we know - Cody might have the best attitude there. Maybe they edited like this - so they can show him later in better light - for a big dramatic reversal.

And all this for larger customer interaction in the comments section.
  • 2 0
Too much waffle on these Academy episodes. FTP tests don't make for great cinema, so I guess yapping is the only alternative. Far better than contestants' statements direct to camera would be footage of them actually interacting with each other. You'd get a better idea of character that way. Sending Israel home was the right decision. Nice guy but he'll never be Pro material unless he upgrades skills and fitness. Cody probably next to go unless he shapes up. Still between Emmett and Flo for the big check - leaning towards Emmett now, but that could change in a heartbeat
  • 5 2
So these people are supposed to be high level mountain bike athletes and yet their watts/kg are pretty terrible! Basically equivalent to a cat 4 amateur road cyclist!
  • 5 0
Good thing they aren't road cycling, eh?
  • 2 2
We are not road road cyclist for sure. There is no comparison to mtb trails and boring road. It is different like how fitness is from football to basketball. Different skills usin same motions. I bet a high school mtbr can bench more than a roadie... u see the point.
  • 2 0
@Viper13: the top racers in all disciplines have at least a reasonably high FTP. guarantee you that no top 10 downhill or EWS racer is under 4w/kg.
  • 1 0
I was thinking the same thing!! I never made it out of sport class in MTB and I've never won anything but I touched 4w/kg at peak fitness. There's plenty of fast riders up and down with higher values than some of the ones in the video.
  • 3 0
I feel like I understand this elimination decision but I was hoping for it to go the other way. Almost wish two people could have been taken out this week.
  • 3 0
The guy in the thumbnail's facial expression is the same one women make while giving birth... He might be suffering just a little.
  • 3 0
Is there anywhere where they posted the full race results and FTP scores? Seems like there was a huge spread in results on both
  • 4 1
The race results are briefly shown at the end of each episode.

Episode 1 at 45:33 mark for the race.
Episode 2 at 39:46 mark for FTP test.

@Jamminator: thanks! Maybe they don't put it in the article as that would be a pretty clear indicator of who's being cut

I so wanna see Israel joining the Pinkbike team as a presenter or ambassador!
  • 5 0
really milked an FTP test to create a 40min episode...
  • 1 0
I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I just began training about 1 month ago and the difference in my trail speed is more than skills coaching would have given me, by far.
So for those like me, that think (or thought in my case) riding alone can make you fast, consider a proper spin cycle training program as it really makes a difference.

For the love of mountain biking, stop this madness, this is the TRASHIEST production ever, it's just horrible, you're giving the sport a bad name by producing this bullshit advertisement filled shit show of the year. Just stop. Go home, sit in the corner, and think about what you've done.

Oh how I love fitness tests

This is awesome. Helping ppl make their dreams a reality.

I really wanted to see Cody step up at the end of quit so he could give his spot to Israel and get him more airtime for another episode. Israel has less of a chance of winning than Cody, but more of a chance to change his life and his world just by getting on the air.

 Fit means sh*t
While,
BMX means sex
  • 6 3
Cody has been kinda acting like a little bitch this whole time! Just sayin!
  • 1 0
it feels like a lot of the riders haven't been training. Many of last year's Academy had higher watts per kilo and they didn't have the advantage of knowing there was an FTP test.

I hope we get to meet the secret pros at the end of the season. I have my suspicions of who they are Smile
  • 1 0
Why pinkbike don't select only EWS privateers as participants? I feel like there is much potential to push a professional careers there.
  • 5 3
Curious if Israel as a company ambassador would sell more bikes than the winner of this show.

@noideamtber: This whole "make a pro" thing all falls apart when you consider most of the top 50 UCI DH'ers don't make a livable wage from their primary sponsor. Like what the winners gonna get a couple free frames and still have a full time job? Sweet. They spent more on the production of this show than any of these athletes stand to make over a 20 year career of being a "pro mountain biker"; riding mountain bikes(with the exception of literally 5-10 of the absolute best) is not a job.
  • 1 0
@pbfan08: i think i would rather be Israel, hes already been contacted by Kona, he still enjoys MTBing for the fun of it, having fun and doing fun things on a bike will always sell more than racing.

  • 2 0
Male pro was 4.23 w/kg and the female pro was 3.53 w/kg
  • 8 1
 @cwgatz: thankyou.

Just checked Pogacar.
When he win stage 8 of the tour.
Slovenian averages 6.5 watts per kilo for 24 minutes and 450 watts for the decisive attack

Also 5.4 here for a whole stage for Nibali

www.google.com/amp/s/www.cyclingweekly.com/amp/news/latest-news/investigation-take-beat-pro-440318

Meaning if we put Jack Moir, Richie Rude and Jesse Melamed in an academy with the top roadies, made the bottom 3 all go home, then based on FTP, the top 3 EWS racers in the world would have all gone home!

Not saying FTP isn't valid but it is a sign of more roadie fitness than enduro fitness (it's a sat down test, last I checked you don't sit down much on an enduro stage). Would have been far better to have had fit for racing on there and put them through a calibrated by weight session.
  • 3 0
@betsie: Yeah, the male pro is the enduro pro, definitely not a road pro. Totally different type of riding. As someone who's out on the road a lot (and works on improving their FTP), it's nice to see the comparison, but tough to see its relevance in this contest. However, it's a simple test to do and you get a quantifiable number as an output. And for that it's easy to track, improve and compare. I really like Israel, however his numbers were dismal. Lots of room for improvement there and hope to see him get stronger and faster
  • 2 0
@betsie: 100% agree, I responded to somebody else with a similar comment....FTP may be directionally correct for overall fitness, but relative to enduro specifically, probably a poor metric. There are some baller EWS guys who probably are in the high 4's maybe low 5's, massive exception.

They should of (IMO) used some sort of pyramid or ramp interval test, 15s on 45s active recovery....ramping up to a max sustainable wattage they can hold for the 15s...something to that effect.
  • 1 0
@cwgatz: to be fair to FTP. As a downhiller I used to train with sustained efforts in the turbo and 40 mins total time and it worked great as my weight came down and therefore my power to weight ratio went up, my off the line power wasn't compromised as the muscle memory part of standing and pedalling v constant efforts (4 real power changes) was so different and the influence of 4 power changes wasn't much. Then I moved to use the GCN videos and m memory muscle went to pot, my off the line and out of corners, standing pedalling power was terrible. I stopped the GCN videos (which I really enjoyed) and my muscle memory got better again.
We are all different though and this is just what worked and didn't work for me.
I would do a gym session post turbo to start warned up and my legs fatigued. My times and race results reflected this training really working for me. I just need to get motivated to go back to this training again one day!
  • 2 1
I'd be amazed if there's many pro's under 4w/kg. EWS days are big days and you still need to be able to pedal around the whole course in a reasonable time.... There's a base level of fitness expected that I reckon FTP reasonably represents.
  • 3 0
@sweaman2: Agreed. On the big pedal up days FTP is massive influence. Not so much about powering up the race sharp climbs but rather being able to manage fatigue on transfers.

For example, if your ftp is 4.25w/kg you can ride steady at just below 3w/kg at tempo watts (65-75%) all day.

But if you're ftp is 3.25 w/kg the same effort puts you up in high sweetspot/threshold territory (85%+) which is far less sustainable. Burning way more glycogen at 3.25 whereas the 4 w/kg person is fueling with fat. So pretty obvious who's going to be fresher as the day progresses.
  • 3 0
 @Brianio19:
I recall doing an enduro and the fast boys climbed so slowly, FTP was not on their mind, when it got steeper they just got off and walked up. There was plenty of time for the transfers.
Then they point the bike down....
youtu.be/MK0zWHk0BXM

One of the beat videos to show the difference between a top pro and a good rider.
  • 1 0
 @betsie: Cool vid
  • 1 0
@betsie: Yeah exactly, that's my point. I'm not talking about making the time cut, but rather accumulated fatigue. That slow effort you're talking about is going to be easier and take less of a toll across the day the higher your FTP or more accurately your w/kg. The less tired you are, the faster you'll go.

Your w/kg also affect acceleration, obviously with diminishing returns the longer you have to stay on the gas, as that's here where pure watts comes into play.

Obviously it's not as big an influence as in road or CX, but it's definitely a factor.

That is a cool video!
  • 2 0
@Brianio19: I bet there are several top enduro racers who don't know their "true" FTP....a properly measured one. Their FTP is what it is....they have descent sprints, probably really good repeatable 10-15s power, good ability to actively recover and can ride steady all day....because of that they probably have reasonable FTP's.....not the other way around. I get your point but don't think FTP is a good metric and not something any of these guys focus on.

I bet guys like Sam Hill or Moir don't know their FTP.

When I was racing CX a lot I had a FTP @ 80kg in the 370-390 range and a 1500w+ sprint....reasonable numbers, I'd get done with a enduro stage and I was destroyed....transfers were a piece of piss, but the fitness I did have didn't translate to the parts where we actually raced, in the stages.

I've never raced an EWS but the qualifiers I have done where some top racers showed up...they were riding very conservatively and/or walking....but I realize in the EWS the transfers are timed and can be aggressive.
  • 1 0
@RadBartTaylor: I'd be amazed if anyone inside the top twenty was unaware of their FTP during training. And as you allude to, could be just from a ramp, 8 min or 20min rather than the amount of power they can sustain for an hour. But in fairness I have no basis upon which to draw that opinion.

To build/increase that 10-20sec anaerobic you need to know your zones right? And the higher your FTP or W/Kg, the higher your V02 or Anaerobic power zones (sometimes, I know V02 can be anything from 110% to 130%)...but you get where I'm going with it. They would use the FTP as basis for enduro-specific training.

Your numbers were not reasonable...they were nuts, you were nearly 5w/kg. That's super strong. But I would say CX effort (I raced too, but not with your numbers lol) is a bit different. More comparable to an over/under threshold type effort (obviously a few anaerobic efforts too) whereas race an enduro race run is pretty anaerobic right down with very much Zone 1/2 efforts on the transfers.

Anyway, I don't want to paint myself into a corner as saying FTP is be all and end all, but as stated I agree with original poster, it's an important element for training and racing.
  • 3 0
@Brianio19: Those numbers got me pretty high as a local regional racer on flat courses, any course with hills I'd get dropped by top guys. Best case I was nudging 5.0 w/kg, on a good day, the other top 10 dudes were above that on average.

I agree though on the zones and % of projected FTP...I guess my original comment was more along the lines of don't base enduro fitness on FTP as there are several dudes with average FTP who are very explosive riders and great athletes....maybe if they focused on FTP they could bump it up, but not at the expense of other elements of fitness.

Going out on a limb and I'll say EWS racers FTP is probably just above average for a dedicated cyclist that trains consistently and in the 'normal' range...but their 10 second and overall sprint power is probably significantly above that normal range.....

I had high hopes for Cody... but he doesn't have the Passion

I get trying to find the best racer but let face it Cody is not it, I would rather have a person with positive attitude with poor performance than a person with a pissy attitude and poor performance.

Too much fluff in the new season, I guess they had to add extra content to get to a 40min episode

I've never put a computer on a bicycle. Am I missing something?
  • 11 0
I only run data on a trainer but it's definitely taught me some things. Main thing I've learned is that mashing at low rpm's just blows out your legs and spinning higher rpms lets your cardio system do the work. I suspect that's why Cody was complaining about the feel of the trainer, looked like he is a bit of a masher. I've found the cadence and effort levels that I can do for hours and about how much of an effort I can give for a 1/2 timed run. Minor details perhaps, but it helps to avoid passing the next lactate threshold and blowing up. The other main thing that it helps for me is to keep my training in zone 1. I always thought that higher (zone 2) efforts were better, but i followed a progressive training program last winter and knocked 10% off of my timed xc loop. I've decided I don't want the data tracking outside on my trail bike, but for anyone biking towards a goal, the data can help.
  • 1 0
I started riding with a garmin edge 520 on my mtb this year. I had it on road bikes and also had an extra cadence sensor, but no power meter. Figured i would just give it a shot. I only pay attention to it on the climbs. Ill watch cadence and my hr zones. As mentioned, higher rpms work the cardiovascular system more instead of the leg muscles. It generally helps me have more energy on the descents. I watch my hr zones so i dont over extend my cardio system. If im struggling up a climb i can usually focus on fixing one of those two pieces to ease things up. Back in September i was dying at the start of a climb. Super high hr zone in the first 10 mins of a climb that i do regularly. Cadence was low so I went easier on the gears with a higher cadence. HR dropped to a lower zone, but i couldnt keep it there. Eventually i just stopped and got off the bike to take a rest. It was maybe only a minute or two and my heart settled down. I was fine for the rest of the ride. In a nutshell, it just provides a visual for me to see what is going on. That in turn helps me manage the effort better. Fwiw i never look at speed on it. Its super slow on the climbs and if im going fast, i dont want to take my eyes off the trail. Id also not consider it a critical piece of equipment on the mtb. I ride for fun and that happens with or without the computer.

That elimination was mind boggling, what was Cody's redeeming feature over Isreal?
  • 61 0
He beat him in both challenges
  • 7 2
@Assclapp: plus you have to have a "bad guy" in reality tv... I think he'll be gone soon.
  • 15 1
I think sadly Israel's speed and fitness were quite far off the back. He was so awesome though. I would love to see more of Israel on Pinkbike! Maybe talk to Robin about hooking him up with a job. Seriously- he was such a positive breath of fresh air and his passion was contagious. However, don't pitch it based on his passion for the sport, positive attitude, love of mountain bikes, and his overwhelming desire to help others enjoy bikes and progress. I listened to the podcast with your new white bread overlord and don't think that would work. Probably say something like: "based on demographic research we realize there is a large untapped market in Latin America that would be more likely to purchase bundled lifestyle packages that they don't even know they need yet with increased representation of their demographic. Israel scored well amongst multiple demographics of testers, provides a viable charismatic bridge to increased profit and exposure, and would help to further the imperial reach of the Outdoor plus portfolio expansion."
  • 7 0
Ugh, speed? Its not a personality contest. Its a contest to give a fast person a racing contract. Cody is fast. Israel wouldn't win a local race.
  • 1 1
Haha how about speed, fitness, skill? The dude put a damn minute into Israel on the race track and you're asking what his redeeming feature was in a show where the winner will most likely race EWS for Orbea (see Evan from season 1)? Lol.

There are 2-3 people who can realistically take it (Emmet, Flo, Tori) unless someone can massively improve or pull some Ultimate Brand Ambassador talents out of the hat. Even then, it's gonna have to be one of the relatively fast people.
  • 4 0
@humoroususername: Sure, speed's a factor - but you've forgotten what clinched the EWS for Jack Moir this year. He got high marks for cheerful banter on the uphills and his hilarious reaction to getting a flat

 Should have been Cody
  • 6 0
Come on now. Israel was like a minute off in the race. Slower and lower FTP than most women. Good guy but Cody at least has some potential for improvement (though still going to be eliminated soon).
  • 1 3
Nice guys finish last, Israel goes home. All dramas need a antagonist so Cody will stay until the bitter end.

I'm not happy with the trainers shutting off their tests before they were done, as soon as they hit 200bpm...
  • 9 0
I guess PB is not too stoked at the prospect of dealing with people having heart attacks there... Puking is enough...
  • 13 0
the trainers turned it off when they couldn't do the rpm needed. Pretty simple

@kingbike2: I have but I had a weird thing were I was most comfortable a much higher than average heart rate.

Yeah, I was wondering if it was HR or something else, maybe another reason was stated and I missed it. Oh well.
  • 2 1
@kingbike2: I used to ride with a guy who routinely hit 200+ on climbs and could still talk. He was young and I referred to him as a humming bird. I've never come close to 200
  • 1 4
I'd have eliminated Cody and given Israel another shot. Pretty sure that's not the last of him we've seen on Pinkbike!
  • 9 0
He was slower than half the girls and the other half had never done a mtb race before. This is a competition for a EWS racing contract not a local club masters category.
  • 6 0
Israel is extremely slow. Why would you give him another shot? He has no chance of having a career as a racer, regardless of how nice he is. Cody is a dick but he's actually fast. Dont like him though but I'm sure there are lots of pro athletes who are dicks.
  • 4 6
Was it his haircut that made him cry at the end?
  • 6 9
Whaaaat who eliminates Israel?! He has the best spirit!
  • 13 0
Riding ability and fitness are #1 and #2 requirements for a pro rider. Totally agree with you though, his attitude is great.
