Video: Top-Speed World Record Smashed at 183 mph on a Bicycle

Sep 18, 2018
by Alex Evans

Denise Mueller-Korenek has smashed the previous bicycle land speed record of 167 mph by nearly 17 mph. Reaching a maximum speed of 183.93 mph, faster than the top speed of a Lamborghini Countach LP500 S, using just pedal power.

Using a specially adapted bike, she was towed to just over 100mph, the speed at which she was able to stay on top of her bike's insanely high 62:12 gear ratio, and then slipstreamed behind the car, accelerating up to top speed under her own power.

The record took approximately 5 miles to beat - she was towed for 1.5 miles and then pedaled for the remaning distance in the towcar's draft. With the high gear ratio of the bike, one revolution of the pedals equated to roughly 130-feet of distance travelled.

Denise completed the challenge on a custom-made KHS that resembles a chopper more than a traditional bike. At 7 feet long, it's equipped with 17-inch motorbike wheels and looks to have an exceptionally slack head angle.

I personally don't get these and land speed record attempts, especially with the draft car.... but I do understand wanting to achieve something and putting everything you have into it, so kudos to the team that made this happen, especially the rider for having the nerve to hold that draft at such a speed - I get sketchy drafting my buddy on the road bike!
  • 94 30
this shouldn't be the record she was towed by a car up to speed its pointless. what's the fastest someone has gone on a ridable bike. that should be the world record on a bike
  • 37 15
@grundletroll: and she got towed to 100 mph first, I don’t gets it
  • 127 10
Why didn't they tow her up to 180 mph?
Also, why doesn't the Lambo get to draft behind a Koenigsegg?
Frankly, riding down the face of a volcano to 144mph is a little more impressive. That's just me.
  • 68 22
Its because its physically impossible to pedal the bike to that point with that gear ratio. Then, the wind itself becomes more of a factor to overcome (can you pedal into a 180mph wind?), which is why the vehicle was there to cut the wind.

The way I see it, she's a badass.
  • 14 4
@Thustlewhumber: Maybe some lower gears to get up to speed?
  • 45 12
@Thustlewhumber: So we remove all the factors that make something difficult in order to achieve some arbitrary accomplishment? Also, are other people doing this? This seems like a record someone created out of thin air just to get their name in a record book.
  • 8 5
@tbubier: well, ridding a bike at 180 mph is just another level of fast ridding...Just one little thing go wrong at that speed.
  • 13 0
Riding a bike at 180mph would be scary AF regardless of being towed or drafting. I and an interesting egineering challenge. I don't think this negates the volcano speed record.
  • 6 2
@tbubier: Thank you... perfectly summed up the point I couldn't quite out into words. It's still cool, but not really a biking record "using just pedal power." and whatnot as claimed. Different category. This wasn't someone out for a ride... these guys use $1,000,000 proto bikes and remove the typical obstacles. Cool... but different.
  • 14 4
@tbubier: "ALL the factors that make something difficult" ?
There are different landspeed records for a reason. I dare you to break this record if all difficult factors are removed according to you Wink .
  • 15 2
@tbubier: This kinds of records exist since the bicycle was invented. Early records were set behind motorbikes, some in a velodrome. The in the early 60's the record was around 127mph on a steel road bike with inverted fork and wooden rims behind a GT on a german autobahn. Later records were set at Bonneville.

Invent some kind of derailleur that can handle a huge range and I'm sure these athlete would go up to speed by their own means.
  • 18 0
@tbubier: Well, actually, it's one of the oldest type of high speed bike records, which started the 1890's.

See Guy Martin's record-attempt for a lot of good historical background, and the challenges that lies within it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=byZTGiWQzd8

@tbubier: Definitely not created out of thin air. People were doing this behind trains when they were the fastest vehicles with plywood layed between the tracks for a road. Charles "mile-a-minute" Murphy hit 60mph at the end of the 19th century.
  • 2 0
@megatryn: Thanks for the link. That was quite helpful.
  • 5 2
Maybe with a turbo levo she could have got a few more km/h
  • 2 0
@tbubier: "Thin air" ...that's funny. There was also a "lack of resistance" and "no pushback".
But I prefer not to "operate in a vacume"
  • 8 2
She didn't use politically correct 27.5 plus or 29" tires so I'm not even reading this.
  • 3 1
@Thustlewhumber: so...besides the pedaling and the wind..its just like setting a speed record on a bicycle.
  • 15 2
She beat the record set by Fred Rompelberg with similar support (draft car and all that) so she beat that fair and square. There are different records for DH or a production bike etc, this is just a different record. It is still a challenge. Fred Rompelberg broke nearly every bone in his body in a failed attempt. I know a huge lot of PB visitors appear to put a lot of weight on the pedal effort aspect of riding a bicycle, but there really is much more to it than just that.

Sooooo......... is it 'Technically' an eBike ?
  • 3 1
@grundletroll: Normally these attempts are done on fixed gear bike so the pedals are turning from a dead stop till record is broken. Not sure if this was the case, but I believe it's part of the record requirements.
  • 3 0
Also, this is the exact same draft car that Rompelberg followed!! She smashed that previous speed record, set in 1995!!
  • 4 0
@tbubier: Google this. Riders have been doing this since the 30's. Iv'e got a book that shows a guy drafting a train with a special platform layed down between the tracks.
  • 1 0
@bndrace: Try like since 1890's, dudes were batshit crazy back then.
  • 2 0
@mtbikeaddict: Do you not mean a $10 frankenbike? Would be terrified to go 60 on that thing.
  • 2 1
@tbubier: Bike speed records in the drafts of cars have been going for years and years. Hardly some randomly created record just for this attempt.
  • 2 1
@mgolder: hey thanks for chiming in but the dozen or so people that commented before you already established that.
  • 3 1
@tbubier: Hey, thanks for chiming in. But I really don't care that anyone else said it as I didn't bother reading their comments.
  • 1 0
@tbubier: its the same car used to set the previous paced land speed record. over 20 years ago. this is by no means a new record, the original paced land speed record was set behind a steam train.
  • 2 0
 @scary1: Not just you.
  • 1 0
When is KHS releasing this bike, I want to go 183 mph behind a car.
  • 1 0
@ShempHoward: i was thinking the same thing.. Imagine how much faster 29" would be :-/ (not really)
  • 1 0
@icowan: I'll do 180mph down Mt Everest with that rig. 17.5" up front and 29.5" in the back.
  • 1 0
 @ShempHoward: ... behind a car...
  • 1 0
@vinay: I was actually thinking of going behind the A train
  • 2 0
@tbubier: Guy Martin, an English motorbike racer did exactly the same thing a few years ago. In fact, she may have taken his record. He has made a career of racing the Isle of Man TT bike race which is raced around the islands roads where accidents kill. He did something similar and he was terrified. So props to this lady! And that's not considering the fact she has an older son so is perhaps older than you might expect when you start watching the video!!
  • 1 0
@murphy82: I think Guy Martin raced in a different category. According to the link above, he raced at about 113mph. According to my link below, John Howard set a record back in 1985. Fred Rompelberg set the bar higher ten years later and that is the very record Denise Mueller-Koronek eventually beat this year. Doesn't mean Guy Martin isn't badass, of course. He's probably the most famous truck mechanic out there too!

@mtbikeaddict: nah, the rear derailleur is dead
  • 67 2
Extremely long and slack, so should be the perfect bike for all the pinkbike keyboard warriors
  • 9 1
Not perfect, chainstays bit long for my liking. Otherwise this is my dreambike. Even seems to rock a thudbuster!
  • 9 1
 @IntoTheEverflow: Also, the bars aren't 820mm.
  • 13 0
@IntoTheEverflow: Definitely no room for a bottle cage either....
  • 5 0
@TheR: you guys are so out of touch, short bars and long chainstays are the thing now

but does it climb like a goat???
  • 5 0
@DarrenV: Only if its reviewed on here.
  • 1 0
But I see no hydraulic disc brakes with a one finger brake lever. It appears more like she's running a v-brake in the rear only. This is more like an old school dirtjump setup, innit?
  • 1 0
@vinay: She's got 2 brake levers, 1 for vee brake and I think there's a disc brake on secondary big ring, which would suggest a fixie. Pretty damn sure these bikes require it for the pedaling aspect of the record.
  • 1 0
@MikeGruhler: Thanks, yeah I saw there are two levers though I didn't see what it was for so I just suspected it was two levers for one brake (using one of these BMX splitters). A disc brake on the chainring makes sense though.
  • 3 0
@vinay: the second lever was to release the cable that pulled her before she reach a speed high enough to handle the massive gearing.
  • 2 0
@opignonlibre: Ah, that makes even more sense!
  • 1 0
@opignonlibre: That seems more plausible, good point.
  • 55 1
If you take a minute to think about it, this is a triumph of logistics, engineering, and perseverance. There’s nothing easy about it. Don’t confuse drafting at 25mph with drafting at 183mph! The draft car had to driven perfect on salt, at speeds where the car is experiencing constant wheel spin (higher wheel speed than ground speed) so its gonna be real loose, even without the giant cone on the back... Your going to need the perfect rate of acceleration and to hold a steady line so the rider can stay in the draft and not get sucked out or wiped out by the draft shroud. You gotta fund it, build it, train for it, and actually do it. Huge congratulations to the rider, driver, fabricators, sponsors and support crew.
  • 5 0
Excellent point. Okay, some may not be interested. This feat requires world-class athleticism and mental focus. It's a great accomplishment for cycling and sports worldwide.
  • 5 0
Seeing her ride at 183 MPH is as impressive to me as seeing the Red Bull Rampage riders do their stunts. Both events make extensive use of manmade elements but that doesn't make them less sick.
  • 9 0
She also has to put down 700watts of power for over a min. while staying within a 46" wide window with almost no view of where you're going, on loose over hardpack and a stream of salt spray. On a hardtail that weighs 35lbs...read this article, pretty damn impressive! Good job! www.wired.com/story/denise-mueller-korenek-bike-speed-record-168-mph

29" is the biggest lie ever. It's a useless, too big, too heavy, too flexy and too soft piece of bullshit made to steal our money...
  • 22 3
Saying "using only pedal power" is deceiving. The car draft is putting much more effort into the speed than pedaling. Not trying to take anything away from the accomplishment, it's still super impressive, but the click-bait thumbnail description bothers me.
  • 4 2
Sounds like an assumption instead of fact, have you drafted anything over 60mph on a bicycle and maintained then increase your speed to even 70mph. Gonna make an assumption myself and say that you have to put down some serious power to keep accelerating. If she tried coasting she would lose the draft faster then you could catch it. As well she's on a salt lake bed, there hard with a soft crusty layer on top, not the greatest surface for confidence inspiring traction. Gotta feel loose as hell.
  • 5 2
@MikeGruhler: yer mom has a soft crusty layer on top and is loose as hell.
Sorry man apologize in advance but I couldn't pass it up
  • 2 0
@mrgonzo: lol, nah Mom's hard as f*ck and would loosen up that tight ass you got! Don't worry I won't let her no what you said...unless your into that, I don't judge. Sorry, don't get me started. lol
  • 2 2
said by someone who cheat and take the lift to go on top then cheat by using gravity to go down the same trail ?
  • 4 0
@MikeGruhler: It's not an assumption that the draft effect is putting more "work" in than the person, that's a fact. To get a roughly bicycle+person shaped object up to 180mph takes at least 74000 watts if you're being optimistic. Top track sprinters can put down around 2500 watts, but only for a short periods. So the net boost your getting from the draft effect is almost a 3000% gain. The fastest pedal powered bike without drafting or gravity assist is about 100 mph slower than this record.

I never implied that no pedaling was happening, or that she wasn't putting down super impressive watts, or that it is not hugely impressive. Just that Pinkbikes caption is misleading, and implies a completely different record than the one that is in the article.
  • 2 2
By your logic, going downhill is deceiving too because you don't have to pedal as hard.

Just enjoy the accomplishment. We all know you can't go 184mph on a bike without drafting or descending. Or did you not realize that? ;-)
  • 23 1

  • 15 1
Old max's down hill record with zero drafting on a production mandrake was not as fast but more impressive for sure. However going that fast on anything is a achievement especially a bike.

  • 3 0

Largest manufacture of quality bikes in the world. For a reason. Remember, the previous attempt was actually first tried on a specialized that did fall apart. He had to switch to KHS to get a bike that wouldn't fall apart.

I wonder how many watts she had to throw down ??

  • 6 0
 How come she didn’t use a 29+?
  • 2 2
As speeds get very high, centrifugal forces get very strong. Reducing the radius of wheels helps keeping that down. I'm ready to bet the tires are far from standard as well.
  • 6 0
@polarproton: That would be the case if two differently sized wheels were rotating at the same rate, but the constant in this case is the linear/tangential speed at the tire. Because centripetal for is mv^2/r, the larger wheels would actually experience slightly less force at a given rpm. As for why they'd use smaller wheels, my guess would be because smaller wheels are more resistant to buckling, but I have absolutely no evidence for this claim.
  • 4 0
@zachsmith000: I would have to take a educated guess and say it has more to do with a bicycle wheel and tire are not designed for those speeds, where as a motorcycle tire and wheel hit these speeds regularly. Could you imagine your tire failing at those speeds, would get ugly fast.
  • 1 0
@zachsmith000: damn you're right, rookie mistake on my side.
  • 2 0
The wheel needs to be durable at 184mph but yet not too heavy so that gyroscopic effects are minimized. Smaller diameter helps with that and with a flat surface like the salt flats, larger diameter has little to offer.
  • 1 0
OldDinosore It appears that Denise M-K is towed to far more than 100 mph - and once at full speed, is turning over at maybe 80 rpm with moderate resistance at the pedals. 183+ mph on a bike is certainly a notable record, but done in this fashion, it is more in the realm of a dangerous stunt than an athletic achievement. The Battle Mountain enclosed recumbents are pushed at the very start to no more than average running speed, and require superbly conditioned bicyclists to peak at 80+ mph, despite the miniscule drop in elevation over the five mile course.
  • 7 2
While cool, I'd be more impressed if it was unassisted.
  • 4 1
There probably is a record for and unassisted run, this is definitely not it. It's hard enough to get are car to go 180 mph let alone a pedal powered bicycle.

  • 1 0
I think there is some money making model behind it. Basically from talking to a guy that does this. Some companies or organizations pay out for records. so if a record is broken then the team that made it happen gets paid. Just don't know the details or which companies pay out. Often it will be woman racers because companies that are for women rights often advertise them and such so they will pay out for women racers, not sure about the men tho
