Video: Steve Smith NZ Gap Case

Feb 21, 2014
by Alan Golds
We've heard news that the Canadian Chainsaw Massacre has injured his ankle from this rather large case of a gap jump in New Zealand! Initial word from Devinci Global Racing (DGR) is that it's nothing too serious. Heal up fast Stevie!

If he can't clear it, is anybody going to be able to?!

make it rain a few hours and turn the course into a huge mess and see how Danny does.. "Stay on your bike, Danny!" - announcer having a Hart-attack

Yeah any freerider would be able to. Any Rampage competitor & any slope competitor could clear it with ease. There's a reason why MOST racers leave the big jumps to the big boys. This video was disappointing. It's like they're running out of shit to post.
  • 88 5
Sure any freerider on thier 50lb steed could clear a gap that one of the quickest guys in the world couldn't. Logic is often contradictory to what people type.

 ^ what a terrible comment.

When Enduro hits saturation point (which it seems to be very close with the PB crowd), free riding will be back to being cool, and those of us that just soldiered on with it won't skip a beat Smile

The trolls will never die will they? Keyboard warriors and their 25 wpm mouthing off and giving shit to Steve Smith, who just happens to be the reigning king of downhill. An anal secretion like freeride-forever with pavement crushing pedigree from Trenton, Ontario couldn't touch him even with the short-bus handicap he deserves. Respect your peers or go and make some other website a shitty experience. Tool.

 That video is amazing.

Personally, I think this gap is huge, though not quite as big as the gap in @freeride-forever's comment above. I would have got to the lip of that jump, stopped and run off making noises like a teenage girl
  • 8 0
How big is this gap because we all know cameras make jumps look a lot smaller than they are in reality, Cheers
  • 16 0
Well considering a) they are going to the effort of videoing it b) he is the world cup champion and still doesnt make it and c) he is coming into it really fast and d) he is in the air for quite a long time id say its pretty f*cking huge.
  • 8 5
I wonder what Gee Atherton thinks about this argument *cough*2nd place at Rampage 2010*cough*
  • 7 0
 Thumbs up Frilko, I agree.
Pretty sure Gee races but also hits gaps that many freeriders would have second thoughts about. Both he and his brother Dan (an enduro racer) will hit most gaps!

Just you. Big ups to Team Canada for their wins in men's and women's hockey. And if we (USA) can't have the gold or DH title, I'm glad it went to our northern neighbor. Let's keep that DH title over here.

He's going to have to take that case to court. And it looks like it wasn't actually a gap jump, just a part of a trail that he thought to jump. Most people probably would of pumped it.

Naw, it's just apparent that mtbers don't know what a gap of destiny is... which isn't surprising because most kids on this site are too pussy to even entertain the notion of sending a gap of destiny, much less spot one out.

Surgery is never good, but at least there are a few months before the WC DH season gets rolling, and also that the result of the case wasn't much worse. Considering his speed and sketchiness of the "takeoff"/"landing", he's lucky it didn't look and sound something like this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SaLA1CyQk8
  • 3 0
That video makes my feet hurt.
  • 2 1
Its less than 8 weeks, not a 'few months'...but he will be fine regardless.
  • 1 1
By definition a few is imprecise, but more than one, so a few months worked for me. However, if you'd prefer i could narrow in and say a couple of months. Oh bother, at less than 8 weeks though that really isn't true either, it's less than that... well, let's settle on several weeks then, shall we? Phew, thank goodness you were there to catch that stik, it is now sorted! Maybe wait til afffffter the morning coffee before you throw up your first post of the day, or perhaps the other side of the bed? Wink

Regardless, you're right, he'll be fine, but I'm not thinking he's super keen that he's going to have to alter his training for the very few weeks remaining before the UCI WC DH season starts. At the tiny margins seperating the top guys this is definitely not good news heading into his 1st overall title defense. The real point of my post was that I'm elated that it wasn't much worse!
  • 1 2

Ran into the legend himself at a bar in my hometown Thursday night. He mentioned this accident so it's pretty sweet to be able to see a video of it and how he rides it out like a boss. He was on crutches but was confident that he was going to be back in shape to ride soon. Stoked to see him pull a repeat on the WC circuit this season and do all of us from Vancouver Island proud once again. Stevie for the win!
  • 3 0
It's not like he's not got the stones to make it, obviously just misjudged.

Who can say that they've never cased even a simple jump you hit all the time? Shit happens, even to the pros

play it in slomo (or press pause/play over and over) you can see the takeoff is junk, there is no lip, and then pause it midair and you can see just how far that jump is, ridiculous. Who built that nasty thing?
  • 1 0
Does anyone know what the injury was.....if it was true what vital mtb said that he needed surgery then my guess is he has done the ligaments in the front of the ankle from forcing his foot up towards the shin causing the talus bone to prise apart the tibia and fibula hence rupturing the ligaments (personal experience here)-this is not a minor injury. I hope it is not the case. Whatever the case get better Stevie.DH/Freerider/XC-who gives a f*ck. You seem a pretty funny laidback guy who shreds. The world cup needs you!

 Seriously?
  • 1 1
HaHa, too funny!!!.... but seriously, the Wilson rear end is plenty short, 430mm, only 10mm longer than a stock Demo and 10mm shorter than Gwin's Demo, short enough for a DH bike, and shorter stays would've made no difference on that landing.... but he sucked it up, didn't get bounced, and rode out of it, despite the torn ankle, which is the point of my original comment. Hopefully Steve heels up well in time for World Cups, I'm rooting for him and looking forward to seeing what he's got this year.
  • 5 5
I was joking... thank you... now jokes aside a d Wilsons CS... Whaaaaaaat?! No freaking way! I just checked it! So basicaly... Everyone was giving sht to Spec and Gwin for Demos chainstay and saying it should look like in Session or V10 while World Cup winning bike is more than half way towards Demo?! I am quite pissed off on my self for trusting idiots again... anyways, good luck to Stevie and I wish him most of all things, so he gets as little btchn as possible. People always throw crap at reining champions. Same people cheering for him last year will sharpen their teeth everytime Stevie won't be on top of the podium just like they did with Gee and Aaron.
  • 1 2
People aren't pissed at Gwin for riding a Demo, they're pissed at him because he got a new bike and a few months later added 19mm to the CS, basically changing completely how a demo works. That move really made Gwin look like a sell-out.
  • 2 1
To be honest I think he's probably happy to have got away with a broken ankle, could have been a horrendous crash. Glad it's just an ankle, fingers crossed it's only bone and not tendons. Bummer so close to the season.
  • 1 1
yup, I cased a 25 foot gap at Bootleg Canyon on New Year's Eve 2013 and no break just a MAJOR sprain and I am just getting up to 80% functional. Just like my jump, Stevie's jump did not have enough vertical drop combined with not enough speed and the result was coming up short. It sucks!

Heal fast Stevie!
