bigquotesRed Bull Hardline is back for its eighth edition and has strengthened its status as one of the toughest downhill mountain bike races in the world.

Dan Atherton has spent the last year making improvements to the course – a brutal part-downhill, part-freeride track set in the heart of Wales's Dyfi Valley – which should make this year's event the hardest yet.

Join Eliot Jackson and Jono Jones as they take us through track walk and the nervous first hits on this petrifying track!

Fair play to Bernard, that jump is huge. Glad he walked away from that. I can totally relate to the over jump, I once flatted a mean 4 ft table…..
  • 19 10
It looked like his front rim just exploded on impact. Was it carbon? Wink
  • 6 0
I hope he's ok. Who else will do the weather report?

@m3000: Did look to me like a rim failure. The impact wasn't anything crazy so I'd like to think it was just a dodgy rim, which unfortunately happens with carbon. Could also have just been the rim bottoming out to the ground causing the failure. We'll likely never know the true answer, but I've seen a lot of carbon rim failures in person on much smaller features.
  • 80 2
@Freakyjon: impact wasn't anything crazy 40mph, 100ft gap to nearly flat, rocks and slate popping up everywhere. A rim won't ever get a harder impact
  • 16 7
@endorium: the landing looks fairly smooth , yeah it was absolutely massive but the wheel literally popped, something a bit weird about that.
  • 7 10
@pAzk: I'm sure this is interesting but I don't have Insta, so...
  • 7 1
@m3000: look at image by image (I don't know the keys on qwerty keyboards but the two after last letters). He landed rear wheel first.
That+speed+flat, an exploded rim is expected.
  • 20 1
@Freakyjon: Dude, it was an absolutely enormous flight that he overjumped and landed rear wheel first. The force of the bike rotation slamming the front end down will have been absolutely insane. Could have built the wheel out of girders and it's still collapsing IMO
  • 2 0
@pAzk: What an explosion of the tyre!!!

Maybe don't use carbon wheels on a 120 foot jump??? Probably need to beef up these bikes if we're going to start doing motocross sized jumps I think.
  • 2 0
@m3000: I ride round there, a lot. Rocks and slate everywhere popping up and just beneath the surface.
  • 3 1
I think mentioned something about running 22/26psi. Seems a little low to me as an armchair expert... but PSI alone might not have helped ride out of that one. Hope that doesn't kill his momentum.
  • 3 4
@m3000: I believe he rides aluminum Reynolds.
  • 1 0
 @Eatsdirt: he was running 24/28psi
  • 1 0
@jokullthor: My mistake. Still seems pretty low though given that track.
  • 3 0
@bostondonmtb: defo rides Carbon, seen first hand
  • 2 0
@m3000: he landed rear wheel first and slammed the front into the ground, do that on a small drop or jump and it’s enough to compress the fork most of the way if not all the way. Now do it on a jump that massive
  • 13 0
@Zany2410: he doesn't have youtube neither, send him a VHS tape
  • 4 2
@Solorider13: the impressive thing is that the rim collapsed without bottoming out... ibb.co/JCGNRzD
  • 3 0
@PauRexs: bushing binding can lock the fork. It happens easily if the rear wheel bottoms out. Not sure it happened there but it's highly likely.
  • 1 1
@faul: I understand, but some resistance... don't think lock... Anyway with a veritcal impact any pro rim should last.
  • 4 0
@PauRexs: I'm talking about actual locking, it's geometric. If conditions are good, the frictions increases proportionally with the force you apply trying to sag the fork, so they are always stronger, until something break. So the fork is actually locked as it was rigid.
If the shock is fully compressed and the fork extended, this is the worst case scenario, as the force in line with the fork will be minimal, and the bending moment in the bushing is maximal. If there isn't enough bushing overlap or lubrification, the fork will be locked.
I can't tell if it happened here because there is no quality video of the impact. It's highly likely as the wheel exploded as soon as it hit the ground, but the size of the jump and the rotational momentum from hitting the rear wheel first could be enough. When it happens we can see the hub hitting the rim before the fork even entering it's travel, and then it goes straight to bottom out once the geometry changes enough for the locking to stop.

Is Jess really going to ride this track or is she missing some features?
Not trying to sound sexist but I feel scared for her.
If she can actually ride these jumps etc, I think it would be one of the most amazing feats in Womens sport.
  • 3 1
It certainly is an amazing feat. And zero video of her riding so far. She does talk about hitting the cannon, but I expected there to be more coverage on her given the circumstances.
  • 7 2
Had the same thought. Literally zero offence, but the guys are obviously struggling with some of the features, and she's simply not as strong of a rider as they are. She's an amazing rider, and has massive courage to even bring a bike there though.

@adamkat: I can also bring my bike there, no prob mate.
  • 1 0
would these jumps be in the running for largest ever hit by a woman on a mountain bike?
  • 1 0
Be cool if she can atleast hit something, Matt Jones bought a hardtail 1 year and I think he just hit 1 or two of the more slopestyle features.
  • 2 0
@dj100procentenduro: You probably cant, you need entry.
  • 17 4
@adamkat: guys its not sexist to say men are stronger and go bigger than women in this sport, its just nature and biology!
  • 8 3
@RedBurn: true but nature and biology oddly don’t seem to hold all the cards on every issue these days…
  • 9 0
@inside-plus: he 360'd the metal jump on his HT.
Looks like Jess has ridden the cannon, metal jump and drop after that. She's way braver than any of us already.
  • 3 0
@tremeer023: I saw that. Freaking awesome, that drop is gnarly as! I'd strugle to do those jumps in a perfect bike park set up let alone there in those conditions. What a legend.
  • 5 2
@inside-plus: it was the same drop that took Brage out I think. She is one of the best freeriders in the world right now for sure.
  • 2 0
@adamkat: Crazy to think the course has made the likes of Brage, Dan Atherton and BK have huge crashes. I can't imagine there's a person alive who isn't scared of this track
  • 2 1
She has been hitting… now she also has a broken collar bone…
  • 3 0
@Gremclon: Ya I was following along cause I wanted to see her send it all. Too bad she got hurt cause she was doing some insane hits. Honestly so impressed with her. She's pushing the envelope more than anyone else IMO.
  • 2 0
@dj100procentenduro: With the expectation to attempt to ride the features? If so then good for you ...
  • 1 0
@hamncheez: on a pedal bike, absolutely
  • 2 0
@Gremclon: wasn‘t meant like that… just wantet to point out in this thread that she has a broken collar bone… I was cheering for her!
  • 1 0
@Gremclon: no hard feelings! Cheers! Smile

I don’t have reason to dislike him but the few times I’ve watched his stuff I always wonder why Jono chooses to film his own face so much. If David Attenborough did this he’d still be filming weevils in Ipswich.

Whopper of a crash for BK
  • 4 0
He's going to wake up feeling like his neck took a viagra
  • 10 0
I hope BK has no serious injury taken from that smack on the landing. I thought he cased it mint, but his front wheel decided another.
I hope he is not out of competition, really like his attitude and all he takes to this event.
Btw pretty pumped to see Gee being his "send it" buddy. Casing those hits alone gets you pressured alot.

I’d do much rather watch a series of this, than a series of Warner bros DH.

Us mere mortals are having a hard time to understand this track.

BK crashed hard last year and was sore as hell but showed up for race day and won. The deck of that cruise ship sustained more damage than him!
  • 4 0
I would suggest it is probably on. See guidance from British Cycling. Only found this, as was looking into it for my local kids cycling club and whether to call off lead rides / coaching.

Thanks. Glad it’s game on for a Redbull swan song this year!
  • 8 0
Jesus H Christ that crash was nuts!! Very glad Benard walked away from it.
  • 10 3
The landings don't look steep enough for the size of the jumps.
  • 10 0
Landings need to somewhat match the takeoffs. These are not big kickers that send the riders high. They are flatter and send the riders long. So the landings will reflect that and be less steep. I’ve seen some stories on instagram this morning and it looks like a bunch of riders have now nailed the big double.
  • 4 0
@sino428: lip was too steep sending BK too high, hence the hard impact.
Lip has been mellowed by the build crew and lots of riders have now hit it.
Angle of the landing didn't match the takeoff but it does now.

I would suggest just making the jumps even bigger.

Jono's videos for the event are really good. Getting the inside take from one of the riders and his rapport with competitors make them very watchable.

Wondering, reading the news I learned that there would be no sporting events in the UK during the next couple of days following the death of the queen. Is this correct and if so, is there any news already on how this event will be rescheduled?

Its second time this year that Bernards rim snapped. He had nasty crash in andorra because of that.
  • 13 3
You do realize that these are the same rims that multiple pivot team members used to make it through the entire EWS series on the same wheelset for every race. They had the wheels on display at Sea Otter, every single EWS stage sticker was still on the wheels. There is not another rim manufacturer that can claim that level of durability. This was just incredibly gnarly.

@Tacodip420: There is noone that destroyed two rims in one season like that. That means only BK is the unlucky guy or what? I am just saying i wouldnt believe to Reynolds wheels for the next season.
The wheel is quite important part of the bike to snap.
  • 12 2
@Mosko: Correct that statement to "there is no one that I saw destroy two rims in one season". Just because you didn't see it doesn't make it true. Wheels are regularly destroyed on the world cup circuit, it is the most destructive form of bicycle racing. If you say otherwise you are blind and or ignorant.
  • 3 4

@Solorider13: scary thing carbon rims can blow up this way without even having to bottom out... ibb.co/JCGNRzD
  • 3 1
I think people need to reckon with material science here. Yes, carbon rims will last longer. No, they do not have any ductility, at all. When carbon rims fail, they tend to do so spectacularly. At some point there is a tradeoff between rims lasting a whole season vs rims that fail in a much safer way, even if they do not last as long.

Bernard said on insta that he may have broken his scaphoid but will try to ride , bummer if he didn’t
  • 5 0
If he broke his scaphoid, he really shouldn't ride on it...
  • 3 0
I fractured my scaphoid and hamate and couldn't grip anything well for a couple months. They are unpleasant fractures that take a long time to heal because bloodflow to those bones is limited. I cant even begin to imagine gripping the handlebars for this event with those fractures.
  • 1 0
Scaphoids are a pain in the arse when it comes to healing. Mine took about 3 months to fully heal.
