Phil Kmetz from Skills with Phil was in Whistler this summer for Crankworx. Prior to internet fame, Phil honed his skills racing DH at the World Cup level. Max McCulloch had an opportunity to meet up with him to shoot this rowdy video.
Phil rides NOBL TR38 rims laced to a custom set of silent Onyx Vesper hubs.
I don't mean to be a combo breaker here, but this is the most glorious thread I've ever witnessed on Pinkbike. You guys are awesome. Alright, I'll let you get back to it.

David Grohl really does ride! I've read that before but I had to go find a source; it'd be sick to shred with him... on a bike at least I'm not musically inclined.
Q: "You mentioned that mountain-bike riding with Taylor. Is this a regular occurrence?" A: "I do every now and then. Our drummer Taylor is like a decathlete. As a drummer he’s f*cking incredible. But as an athlete, with two drumsticks in his hands, I defy anyone to pull off the 2 hour and 45 minute set like Taylor Hawkins. It’s bananas."
Phil is one of the only mtb youtubers I will watch, I don't want to watch somebody who is at a average skill level where I could do the same things myself. I want to be wowed and have something to motivate me to try to get to their level. I know Phil will probably always send it harder than me, Jeff Lenoski will probably always be better at making a trail bike work like a trials bike, and Kendal weed will always be way more stylish, but that doesn't stop me from trying. Nothing against more human youtubers, I just don't understand why some of them manage to get such a large following.
I like Phil and I like Seth from Seth's Bike Hacks. Seth may not be WC Pro level, but he seems like a pretty good rider in his own right, and there's enough interesting stuff on his channel that isn't just riding to make it worth the watch IMO.
@krattAtak I started pretty late in the mountain bike game, well into my thirties and with a job and other responsibilities in the back of the mind, progression is a slow struggle. I do enjoy marveling at seemingly super human feats on a bike and try to learn something in the process, but I do enjoy following “normal” humans as well, seeing they struggle with the same things that I do. So there, possibly one of the reasons for their success.
That was a rad video! Love how it combines shredding with some vlogging. This is honestly the shredit of the future! And that corner at 1:00 was awesome!!!
Phil is a great dude, I had the pleasure of meeting Phil earlier this year, and honestly didn't even want to pull out the cameras (as that always changes the dynamic). However, Phil was curious about how I make my own videos, so we went ahead and filmed, and it was awesome seeing how he rides and thinks about both bikes and content. Would love to meet up with the stache master again!!!
@PhilKmetz Have you thought about aiming for EWS? You are sooo freaking quick and smooth... Plus humungous balls! I vote you should be the Privater for season 3. You could document your side of the camera through your YouTube channel, your sponsors would love that and you will prob pick up a few more on the way. @pinkbike please take note
Good to see Phil from a 3rd person POV. Watching his GoPro vids, you can see and feel the speed, but seeing from "outside" is even more impressive. He's one of my favorite YouTuber along with Seth (Seth Bike Hacks).
I hope to run into Phil one day. I’ve been following his YouTube channel for the past 3 years now. I even bought a set of Nobl tr36 wheels because this guy is a mad man on his 38s so I thought they must be indestructible and so far they are.
Keep up the good work phil. And to all that are thinking about a set of Nobl wheels just take the leap you won’t regret it, I sure didn’t!!
Seth put it best when he called Phil the king of sketch. Is there anything he can't ride? Nope. I love watching all of Phil's edits. He makes everything look so easy and approachable because he's so talented. Also just seems like a cool guy to ride/hang with.
I love Phil’s riding. In his youtube channel, check out his videos riding Whistler from a few weeks ago. His riding is incredible, and he more than keep up with some the best riders out there. Very impressive.
Ill never forget when I came across Phils video of Beehive at Wilsons a week after I had rode it for the first time and was amazed at how fast he was riding that stuff especially covered in leaves. Keep it up Phil your a mad man ive been digging the style of your latest videos keep it up!
@PhilKmetz: Yeah man its hard to beat out here but it looks like you havent had any shortage of cool spots to ride up north though atleast in the warm months. Been wanting to make it up to Highland, maybe next season we will see you out there
Phil just seems like unrattled by any crazy sketchy line or is always looking for ways to ride something in the least straightforward way. Like that wild turn slide. Since he seems to be responding to some of these comments: Hey Phil, what style of riding or particular thing did you practice that made the biggest difference in confidence? (i.e. pump track, racing, making a skills tutorial youtube channel...)
I grew up riding and racing BMX before mountain biking. Riding dirt jumps and racing you get really good at pumping and maintaining flow. When I started riding skateparks, I never cared about tricks, but I loved big transfers and figuring out how to maintain flow throughout the skatepark without pedalling. Skateparks also teach you how to be precise and change directions really quickly. When I started riding MTB I had pretty solid fundamentals as a result, but I struggled to learn how to ride off-camber and slippery surface which came with time and lots of bruises thanks (thanks MTN creek!)
I've tried to explain the importance of riding skateparks and becoming more proficient at pumping in my videos, but nobody wants to hear that. Those videos always fall flat. I think there's this perception that skateparks are just for teens, but it's one of the best places to cut your teeth (figuratively and literally).
That dude can’t be from earth to ride like that. Raised on a planet of gnar and steeze and just hucked too hard one day and launched into space, then back wheel dropped on to earth.
Phil !!!!! I think next summer you should come show some love to N.Conway! All the new stuff in Conway and Cranmore mountain are screaming for a skills with phil episode. I'll shuttle you myself!
Impressed every time I see this dude ride. Love his channel and how nice he is. Makes me like GT Bikes over Evil after he switched lol. Nobl wheels pick the right guy to sponsor. He puts those things to the test.
His bike must pray every night: "plz someone told my owner the landing area of the jumps are there for something" . This guy jumps like he has a jetpack/rocket boosted bike....
Haha I'm that's exactly what it thinks! In all seriousness, I hate sending things to flat (though there's a time and place). Small bumps, rocks, roots, and even square edges can all be used to deflect off of and land smoothly, but it can be hard to pick up on.
I love how Phil is always looking for sneaker lines. Earlier in the summer after watching a bunch of his videos I found myself trying to find little things off the side of the trail to pop off of. It made the ride that much more fun.
Been watching Phil for a long time and his bike handling ability is excellent. Trying to get my jumping in order again after a stroke in 2008..... I’ll get there eventually lol. Phil! Help! I’m only in PA!
Phil is a stand up guy and an absolute shredder. I had the chance to ride with him in sedona and I was blown away by the abuse his bike and wheels took. Tge world needs more people like phil.
Phil‘s bike skills are really on a whole different level. I wish I had only a fraction of his composure while riding bikes. Glad he got back into YouTubing again.
@PhilKmetz: You're too good to us in the NE, Phil! I enjoyed your stuff in Lake Placid. Swing about 2 hrs further North when you get it in your schedule.
How much More Time Will WE have to wait for the death of another prorider who does this type of ""trail riding'"" without a full face helmet???? Look at how steep these trail are...if he goes off track head first on a rock or in a tree he could die like jordie..... RIDE SAFE !!!!
Hard pass, I don't want to die! I think Rampage is where I draw the line. I'm scared watching those lines recorded on a GoPro, so I can't imagine how insane it is in person.
@chinaboy you mean riding arse off the back, dragging rear brake all the way down? dont think it did more damage than the average e bike *cough* rider.
Pretty stoked to see how some of these trails can be ridden with a fresh perspective. Phil is at a different level, so many of these lines won't become 'regular performers'. There are lots of outliers in Whistler that ride WORCA maintained trails in crazy ways, but 90% ride them the same way. We can manage for that. Interestingly, most pros and folks that are deriving a living from riding trails often leave behind a donation to the local trail association via Trail Karma on Trailforks or through direct donation through the trail associations website. It shows they appreciate the venue they are given for their careers. Haven't checked if Phil has done so yet. Latest example was during EWS when many pros were riding Lord of the Squirrels and Westside trails and were so stoked, they dropped donations. Wynn Masters is a class act in that regard and a true friend of WORCA.
@whitehonky: I've actually never used that function, but that's a very good suggestion to consider from here on out. I spend lots of time building trails in my neck of the woods. My general thought is as long as I'm doing more trail building than damage the net output should be positive. Thanks for bringing that up!
I recently came across some reddit posts about this guy. Claimed that he has a huge ego, and if you don't know who he is, he throws a fit. Story about how he through a fit at an event in front of the Evil tent and another of how he thinks single track sampler broke his frame on purpose to get more views on youtube.
Disclaimer: I did read all of that, but only posting to cause drama. I am bored.
I met him at nembafest a few years ago and he seemed like a genuinely nice down to earth guy. I follow him on instagram and believe he threw the fit about Evil on there, not actually in person. He later apologized for it and said that he was in the wrong for behaving that way but I kind of saw his side of things. One of his videos gets more views than all of Evil's online content combined and they don't know who he is? If you typed in "Evil bikes" on youtube at the time most of the top suggestions were his videos. It seemed strange to me that they wouldn't know who he is, not to mention he did some seriously badass stunts on the Calling and it was a real testament to that bike's ability, in my opinion.
That gets brought up every now and then. I responded a while ago to one of those comments with my story, but I imagine not that many people saw it. I'll link it below, it's a long read but I think it helps explain the situation a little better. It doesn't excuse me and I acted like a total dingleberry, but I think the situation got a little blown out of proportion. I think those who know me and who've met me in person have had a different experience.
@PhilKmetz: We all behave like jackasses sometimes and the internet loves to find a "bad" person. It is unbelievably refreshing for someone to own up and admit they screwed up. That is a skill we could all learn from Phil.
Listen to the "Hounded" interviews with Kevin the owner of Evil on FreeHub's YouTube. The brand has faced some legit adversity but you can tell the dude is a bit of a dick and that comes through in how certain things have been handled over the years. The bikes have an interesting design/feel but are overpriced IMO. Also they are gonna have to adapt to steeper seat tubes ASAP or become irrelevant, not sure how they will pull that off without changing the sus design.
Yup. I love building just as much as I like riding. Every other week throughout the Summer I volunteer my time helping build on local trails here in Vermont. I also help maintain the local Dirt Jumps. When the opportunity arrises I hope to open up my own Bike Park at some point.
I don't really care about recording most of the trail work I do but here are a few examples of things I've built. I'm usually outbuilding 'til darks, and a lot of the work I do I never post about of because you can't see it when I'm done.
@PhilKmetz: can confirm, have ridden some of the trails Phil has worked on and it's great! Not to mention he's helping keep the dirt jumps alive since most of the crew has given up on them.
I think I've mentioned this before since he was cooking in an older video!
