Video: Greg Callaghan Gets Chased by a Drone in his Sound of Speed Edit

Mar 14, 2019
by James Smurthwaite

It's Greg Callaghan's turn to get the raw Sound of Speed treatment as he flies down some Irish enduro trails.

bigquotesWe decided that we'd waited too long to give Greg Callaghan a Sound of Speed episode, and when legendary Irish filmmaker John Lawlor proposed to do so while enlisting the help of a racing drone, it seemed like too good an opportunity to miss.

Enjoy Enduro World Series star Greg Callaghan going flat-out on the trails of his training ground in Tollymore, Northern Ireland in our latest Sound of Speed episode.

Awesome video, wish the footage was 4K.

Greg is a great rider but .... damn the piloting and camerawork on those drone shots was stunning.

I was a little let down that they didn’t do a high speed flyby of him putting on his goggles, though.

I bet they used a two man operated drone... one to pilot the drone and another to control the camera gimbal. Would be interesting to see behind the scenes on the drone setup for some bonus nerd credit!

@Chadimac22: there are no gimbals on racing drones! Just one exceptional pilot flying a home built drone with a GoPro attached. Check out JohnyFPV on YouTube to nerd out. Incredible stuff!

I wonder how the masked out the noise of the drone? Neural nets?

I can't watch it in work. Does it show a coffee machine or someone pouring orange juice?

@half-man-half-scab: You get two identical drones to fly together, but reverse the polarity of the battery for one of them.

@half-man-half-scab: I'm pretty sure the sound was constructed in post-production.

Here's what it normally sounds like without the drone sounds edited out

@cpeper21: Holy crap. When he flies it under the bottom bracket!!!!
Christ alive!!

@half-man-half-scab: I was wondering the same thing. It would be awesome to get a behind the scenes video of the creation of this. My guess is that Greg was mic'd up with a wireless mic and that captured the bike and nature sounds. If anyone has info on the setup, please share it.

@willyheff: Yeah, my pilot was better at navigating the drone than I am on the bike!!

Big thumbs up for the on-bike sound recording and absence of music.

Superb, but i really missed the hub's sound...

I'm pretty sure all the sound in these are made in post. Redbull made a video showing how they made all the sounds for one.

@AshLol: Yeh, I was a little suspicious about a few of the moments in the video. At the very least, the sound probably came from a drone-free run. However it was done, at least it was music-free sounds of riding.

Audio is way over processed. Just go and listen to others in the series, e.g. Richie www.youtube.com/watch?v=OU137N1hvAY or Brynn

Arent enduro trails just... mountain bike trails...

So fun to watch a top shelf Pro rider going about his business. No fancy kick-outs or other video moves, just pure skill getting put to work in the pursuit of top speed! Cheers, Greg!

Am I the only one that thought that was shit? Bullshit fake bike noises
  • 4 3
Yeah really off putting. Sounded really unrealistic.

Just too much ADR in this one.... sick edit though.
  • 3 1
How many redbull drones does it take to make a 2min clip?
Well sound must have been done separately as no drone whine plus all video takes
So may have taken days too get 2min final clip

Or maybe they've someone good editing that out. Not me. But I'm www.msbmastering.ie...

Nice shooting, but the sound is terrible, and fake. Doesnt even match up with the picture a lot of the time. Why not mount some mics to the bike? Id rather actually hear the real sounds of the ride.

 Fantastic audio!

The piloting was sick, no doubt- but the drone's footage quality and over-processing isn't on the same level. Quite distracting when combined with non-drone shots which look 10 times better.

John Lawlor aka Jawlor is also handy on a bike some bit of camera work ????

The lack of hearing buzz from the hub is disappointing.. Sound of speed if FAKE NEWS! It's a bunch of rocks they shake in a box.

real nice edit, technically and visually, was cool to be turned onto more great riding in a place i've never considered.

the past few years racing XC they would always fly drones above the lead packs' heads. It used to freak me tf out, the sound of the drone. Props to him ahah
  • 2 0
It was a very cool edit, but what 90% of the shots were not from the drone, and the drone shots were in 720p??
  • 1 0
Still doesn't hold a candle to the best of all time, and first of this genre, the Kirt Vories segment on NWD10. Without drones.

No Shite soundtrack..No babbling..just the sound and visual of a gifted athlete...awesome film work..best MTB video of watched in a long time..Bravo!

The Drone shots are like the camera from Evil Dead chasing him, brilliant.

 Sick!

Can anyone tell me where these trails are?

Tollymore in Northern Ireland. Definitely a place to visit if in Ireland.

@ThinkTank45: get in before the border goes up.

I had a chance to meet some friends there for my last day in Ireland after racing the Red Bull Fox Hunt this past October. It is a beautiful area of Ireland and the trails were awesome. Lots of climbing though. I had so much fun, and I cannot wait to go back this year! They have shot Game of Thrones there. They had busses of people touring the park.

I love the sound of the friction that the tires give off while he's navigating the terrain
  • 2 0
That tyre sound is mega.....warp speed
  • 2 0
awesome. Still don't want a Cube though, or indeed a redbull

 Very cool edit!

But, what are we doing? Why are we making machines to chase us down?
  • 1 0
No one noticed the couple of elks practising 69 while you were hypnotized by the drone trajectory???? Pity.. Smile

I hate the way my emoji’s show up ??????
  • 1 0
Does anyone know where it was shot?
  • 1 0
However its done, it does give you an impression of speed.
  • 1 0
Imo the best kinds of videos are ones with no music

 We want real sounds

No flights were cancelled in the making of this edit.

 What are "enduro trails" ?

 Killer dry stack stone walls
  • 1 0
Those stone walls are beautiful, and they are long, and old. It amazed me how beautiful they were. I know, stone walls beautiful, but they were. The whole set of mountains there were stunning. The riding was fantastic. Hopefully this year I can ride faster through them as I know them now.

Couldn’t even watch the whole thing because the audio was so distracting and rediculous. Sounded like a shopping cart tumbling down a cliff!
  • 2 4
Is it a real drone or again a rider with a chest cam?
  • 8 1
Neither. Selfie-stick duct-taped to his helmet.
