Video: Fairclough, Lucas, Payet & Cabirou on Scott DH Factory Team

Jan 16, 2019
by James Smurthwaite

Velosolutions Racing may be no more but Scott are flying into the new season with what looks to be a super-strong factory program in place.

Brendan Fairclough stays put but he is joined by Dean Lucas from Intense and Florent Payet and Marine Cabirou from Voul Voul Racing. It looks like the team will be running a new carbon downhill bike as well. The video above shows both 27.5" and 29" versions and slimmer tube profiles than the aluminium test mule Brendan was running last year. It also has a curved top tube and a lower standover, bringing it aesthetically closer to other bikes in the Scott range like the Ransom, Genius and Spark. We reached out to Scott for further details but they're staying tight lipped for now.

Brendan Fairclough
Having been part of the Scott Family for many years now, Brendan Fairclough will continue with Scott. Always a fan favorite, Brendan looks forward to more World Cup racing and other “extracurricular” activities.
bigquotesI’m super keen to get the season under way. I’m feeling great heading into 2019, and look forward to riding my bike, both on track and for film projects. We have a good vibe going with the team, it’s all very exciting.

photo
Dean Lucas
Australian 23-year-old Dean Lucas brings with him past success, and a very bright future for years to come. He's definitely looking forward to the next few years of racing
bigquotesI’m really excited to be given the opportunity to work with such a well-known and high-end company like Scott. I know they’re putting in heaps of work with the DH program this year and have put a lot of faith into me so in return I don’t want to let them down and have been working hard to make sure that doesn’t happen. I feel I started to peak momentum towards the end of last season and know I will carry that on leading into 2019!

photo
Florent Payet
With Frenchman Flo Payet, we get a well-respected, tough competitor with plenty of speed. Having had an injury-affected 2018, Flo is eager to start putting it all on the line in 2019.
bigquotesI’m stoked to ride for such a big brand with some dream teammates. We have an amazing bike and a solid crew, I’m really excited to spend more time pushing our limits with these guys!

photo
Marine Cabirou
Marine Cabirou is coming off the back of a season that ended on a high note - a 4th place finish at World Championships in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. Her confidence both on and off the bike is very promising, Scott can’t wait to see what she will bring to the circuit in 2019.
bigquotesI am very motivated for this new season, and even more so by integrating into the new SCOTT Downhill Factory Team. We are really in good shape and I’m sure that we are going to do big things together!

Managing the Scott DH Factory is Patrice Afflatet. Patrice has been a key figure on the World Cup Circuit for years and is looking forward to the challenge at hand. “I am excited about the opportunity and the trust that Scott and the other partners have put in us. It is a challenging project, but I am sure we will be able to express ourselves at the highest level. We have a great squad and an awesome bike package. Scott have managed to find the synthesis between design, lightweight and performance. With solid support from Fox, TRP, Maxxis, Syncros, and all of our other partners, the team is in good shape to achieve great things!”

 Now this is some good news! Payet has so much talent but so little real support thus far. Stoked on this linenup!
  • 56 8
 I hope they made a bigger frame for him than their old large with 445mm reach, if not I predict he won't make it to June without chronic lower back pain
  • 12 0
 @paulaston: At 6ft 6, I feel his pain. And yes I agree
  • 1 0
 @paulaston:
I hope you get to test ride it soon.

Pretty sure it's longer now.

 Why did dean Lucas lose his Troy Lee designs sponsorship? DISGUSTING
  • 19 1
 @plplplplplplplplplplplp: dear sir consonant. Thank you for your reply to my comment. I am unsure of what relevance to my original comment your point is, however I shall endeavour to respond appropriately. (Although my suspicion is that you should have started a new thread of your own.) In reference to the actions of Mr Lucas and Mr Lee, I dare say no loss was sustained. Both parties will have made considered decisions based upon mutual benefit. In this case, I suppose Mr Lucas will have agreed to work with other brands in order to be part of Scott's racing programme.

 @thestigmk1: The same, Scott has not been the best when it comes offerings for us taller fellows.
  • 6 1
 @BEERandSPOKES: Sorry to hear you are also afflicted. Not many do I'm afraid. I was told my V10 looked small on me the other day... it's a XXL with a reach adjust cup and 50mm stem. I hope Payet wins everything for the 200cm plus community.
  • 3 1
 @paulaston: lol. I was thinking the same thing! Hopefully that will make Scott come out with a longer reach DH bike!
  • 2 0
 @thestigmk1: Yep an XL ION 20 with a 55mm stem for me. Feels almost perfect.

 @4xwednesdays: Are you displeased?
  • 2 1
 @BEERandSPOKES: Its not like they don't know how to make big bikes - Brendan was racing all of last year on a custom XXL gambler. I'm not sure why they chose not to sell them though!
  • 2 0
 @J-dizzler: and Brendan's not even tall
  • 3 0
 @thestigmk1: I´m also 202cm (6ft 6) and I´m riding a bike with 469mm (1ft 54) reach. If u want and have no other choice, you can still send it with small sizes Big Grin
But if the money allows it, I´m for sure gonna upgrade to a bigger frame!
  • 2 0
 Even at 6' 2.5" the large felt super cramped. Hoping for an XL with a ~500mm reach...
  • 3 0
 @thestigmk1 as one of the team managers who failed to give Flo the support he deserved back in 2007, I could not agree more. He was an awesome talent back then and seeing him race so hard on a bike that sucked and in a team run on two credit cards and the hope our sponsor would one day pay was a credit to him. I am really keen to see how he does with a full factory team.
  • 1 0
 @gavind: I'm sure you did awesome for the level of support you were given. I run a team but at nowhere near that level. It's a tough business. Just think, he might never have achieved what he has without you. You should be proud dude!
  • 1 0
 @hilli337: Hell yeh man! All riding is good riding. I look back at old photos of me on a 26 Commencal DH V2 though and wonder why I brought a BMX to a downhill race.
  • 3 1
 @Aesthethica: I am 6'2" and ride a 500 reach enduro, and an XXL V10 when I hit the DH park. 90% of people are on too small a bike! lol. A guy of 6'6" should probably be on a bike with a reach somewhere around 540.
  • 4 1
 @conoat: that’s not true across the board. Not everyone is looking for outright speed. Some people like the playful, snappy feel of a smaller frame — look at Ratboy. I’m 6’3” and no longer racing, and I decided to go with a L (475mm reach) Transition Scout. The XL fit me great, and would have been my pick if I was strictly trying to be the fastest guy down the hill, but I just wanna goof off on the trails. People should cool it with the “everyone’s bike is too small” talk.
  • 2 1
 @conoat: So true. You notice it when everyone is riding off the back instead of in the middle of the bike. I keep telling people to stop looking at the letters of their frame size and instead look at Reach and Stack. My Pole is a size L but it would be a XXXXL in size Santacruz V-10...
  • 2 0
 @mrbabcock: playful does not mean the bike needs to be too small for you. lol. riding too small of a bike so you can toss it around and jib, is a crutch for bad technique.

 @lalientoxc how many actual wins do all this guys have combine at a WC Level? Exactly. Great group to put out edits. Don’t hold your breath for an actual result that’s not a top”30” which I guess now a days is worthy of mentioning
  • 21 0
 @GatoGordo: Yeah I see your point Brendan n Florent are veterans that have been around forever but haven’t really won many world cups. But Dean has been pretty consistent and he’s results keep escalating, last season he was injured but still computed, n the girl is one of the most promising dh female new racers so.. I’m pretty sure they’ll do well (;

 Doing well is not winning. @lalientoxc:
  • 10 1
 @GatoGordo: Lucas and Payet both have 2 podiums in the last 3 years.

Brendan will be in every single slideshow and race recap video, he was the most talked about rider at rampage by quite some margin. The world cup is returning to Maribor this year so Brendan could be in the running again.

 @GatoGordo: for sponsors looking for exposure I’d say defo more than makes up for it.

Why so bitter?
  • 5 0
 Totally agree. Always want to see a Brendan race run. Lucas and Payet are strong possibilities to be on the box . Cabirou is the future of women’s dh. She often looked the best on the bike last year. Her and Vali will be the battle for the top soon. Dark horse top team and probably great business decision on Scott’s part

 @won-sean-animal-chin: you might be forgetting one, Ms. Seagrave.
  • 2 2
 @GatoGordo: I get what you're saying dude. Yeah brendog is a fun rider to watch but he's not a race winner. You can talk about all the edits and Netflix films but WC racing is racing. It's like saying Ken Block is a great racer because of his Gymkhana videos despite flopping in the WRC and WRX.

TBH, guys who barely get a sniff of a top 10 getting more exposure and money than the elite aliens will not help in adding credibility to WC racing.

 @chrish: it’ll be there Wink

 @almacigatrailrider: True...yet sponsors are looking for popular people. Winning races is one way to be popular, but not the only way. Brendog has a wast social media following and he has apeared in a number of mtb films. I’m pretty sure scott sells a shitload of bikes because of him and that’s all that matters.
  • 1 0
 @AIOravecz: For the good of Scott and Brendog, yeah I see your point. But what DH racing needs is legitimacy that would push it to the levels of what Moto is right now. A big following with lots of fans and sponsors where athletes make millions. Aaron Gwin is the top dog in terms of money because of his wins but he earns peanuts compared to the average motocross racer,

If DH or MTB in general want to grow beyond our small community, then we need stars who win in the highest levels of the sport while also having entertaining personalities.
  • 1 0
 @almacigatrailrider: Dean Wilson is a top 10 rider and is a privateer this year.

Motorcross there is only really 6 factory teams with usually 2 riders a piece. Those 12 are on big bucks but the drop off outside of that is pretty steep.

Part of the thing I love in mtbing is the amount of talented riders all riding similar level bikes makes such open unpredictable even racing. Sadly that does equate to less money per individual though.

  • 2 0
 @Balgaroth: Somehow the previous Gambler reminded me of the Session 10. This one doesn't.
  • 1 1
 atleast it had the idler before, which made it somewhat interesting, despite looking like a session. Now it just, looks like a session.
  • 1 1
 I love my Gambler - now it's SeshAmbler- NO!
  • 1 1
 @vinay: Really ? Like really ??? As much as I found the Session 10 to be cool it looks nothing like the former gambler. Session 10 is horizontal shock with a bridge in the seattube while Gambler had vertical shock with scissor linkage and much slimer tubing too. Appart from the fact they are both single pivot with shock linkages they are nothing alike.
  • 1 0
 @Balgaroth: Really. Like, really. I said, it reminds me of the Session 10, not that the suspension design is similar in any way. It is probably due to the curved shape of the swingarm.

 I know it is to sell new bikes etc, but it is odd how they go from such a radical frame/suspension design as the Gambler, trying to convince every potential new buyer is the best thing since sliced bread, then come out with this, which, at first glance looks pretty standard.

It is almost like saying, yeah we were wrong actually, forget what we have been saying these last X amout of years, this one is a lot better. I know all bike companies do it, but this frame just looks like all that work developing the Gambler was a kind of a waste of effort.
