Video: Black Ox Tests its New 'Bulletproof' Tire Sealant Using a Rifle

Sep 15, 2020
by Ed Spratt

To test out its claims of a 'bulletproof' tire sealant, Black Ox decided the best way was to use a .22 cal rifle. Their new sealant is made from a mix of different lengths of carbon fibers mix with the latex-based sealant, this is said to fill holes of up to 9mm in diameter, which is why Black Ox thought a rifle was the best tool for the job.

The product is made in North Carolina using technology that Black Ox has taken from its parent company which works in the aerospace industry. Currently, you can buy a 4oz bottle for $5.99, a 16oz for $17.99 and a 32oz for $28.99. But it says you will need around 10oz for a 3.8" 29" tire. You can find out more about the sealant here.

This is America, where you need to make sure your tires are bulletproof so your kids can safely ride their bike to school.

Fortunately for us school shootings no longer exist because of covid school restrictions!

If this is for the American market, how much of the stuff would you need if these trailfairies have a bumpstock installed? Sounds like it might be a good solution for Mike Levy. Either to help ignite the gas or just to inflate the tire with lead.

Murica! Biking equipment promo for hillbilly rednecks. Also Scott Pruitt edition with carbon fiber, great!

How they didn't use an OG Santa Cruz Bullet in this video is beyond me. Maybe even shoot the frame and have sealant leak out and then plug the hole? Anyway, questionable marketing approach aside, I'm sold on this stuff as its been far better than Stans or the stuff from Orange in terms of easy seating and holding air.

Plus, now I'm ready for hunting season around here!

Why was there a cut in the video while the wheel was slowing down and trying to seal, then after the cut the wheel was now spinning faster and the hole was magically sealed....? If you're gonna fake a video at least get the simple bits right
  • 16 0
agreed, were going to need an uncut video... that sounded just like orange seal when you get a bad puncture, then the air blast turns into a slow leak, and you're still screwed.

Funny how the immediate impulse is (rightfully) to distrust this video, but everyone takes that Santa Cruz video of carbon being stronger than aluminum as gospel...
  • 40 2
@rezrov: Santa Cruz never claimed that Carbon was stronger than aluminum.
Their claim was that their carbon frames were stronger than their aluminum counterpart.
Anything taken out of context can be manipulated to appear exaggerated or false.
In certain applications, carbon IS stronger than aluminum, and not just by a little bit. However, in others aluminum would be stronger.
Problem is however, just as there are more than one type of alloy for aluminum, there are many grades of carbon. Add in application, layup, resin, and environmental variables, and now all you have is a fraction of the necisarry information.
I for one feel that santa cruz do carbon very very well, and I feel their warranty is second to none. I don't however feel this way about most companies utilizing carbon today. I feel that a large majority of alloy bikes are superior to their carbon counterpart.
  • 10 0
Yeap, in front of slow mo cameras a la mythbusters. rip grant
  • 10 0
@rezrov: Pinkbike should do a sealant test vid, the same tire, the same amount of sealant, the same size puncture. Because we all know that old Stans ad with the screws and nails in the tire is not the reality unless you have a whole bottle of stans in your tire. Which is another trick with sealant, fill the entire tire with the stuff and it will seal bigger holes.
  • 2 0
@mark4444: I think mtbr or vital did one like that!
  • 7 0
Shouldn’t there be two holes leaking sealant?
  • 1 0
Tbh I never had a punctures who did self seal. I mostly used Stan's race. I am now searching for something new and truly better.
  • 2 0
@Serpentras: I've used regular stans with glitter which has worked quite well. Had a good puncture a few weeks back from some shale at whistler, and the tire held just enough pressure to make it down.
  • 3 0
@rezrov: But why would people not take that one as given? In terms of strength relative to weight, carbon is the objectively superior material period. If done correctly, carbon is stronger than aluminium and you can build superior frames out of it. That's not a dogma, it's just material science and engineering.
  • 3 0

I think he decided it would be unfair to judge the sealant’s ability to seal with the tire spin losing momentum (cut to spinning tire then adding some PSI before the “success” spin around the lawn).

 Unedited video here: youtu.be/mzzlo2BaOS4
  • 4 0
@opetruzel: Okay it shows that it sealed up, but what it didn't show was an uncut to him testing the tire pressure and actually riding it. When he put the bike back down, that tire looks pretty soft. I'm not saying it doesn't work, but what I am saying is I need to know more. When somebody shows me a random video made with a cell phone on uncle bucks farm, I'm a little skeptable.
  • 26 2
Carbon fibers spilling out when you get a puncture, sounds nice for the environment. Also can't wait to get poked from the fibers from handling the sealant and also the fibers poking out of the tire if a puncture did occur.
  • 8 1
Did a double take when I read they were using carbon fibers in their sealant, what the actual f*ck are they thinking?

What do you think is the glitter in some sealant? Microplastic....mtb in some cases is the opposite of environmental friendly....

  • 10 0
I have used this sealant. It works, just don't put it through your valve or it will never work again.
  • 3 0

How esle would a 'Merican test something?

only Questions a 'merican ever asks... "Can I shoot it once, twice or more than three?"
  • 16 11
accurate since 'mericans can't use words like "multiple times" (too many syllables) so they say "more than three"

Now stick it in a Kenda tyre, leave over night and come out to a deflated tyre. Send me some for free, I will test for you, I bet it doesnt work. Plus they didnt specify how much they.put in or what pressure the tyre was at. Interesting the sealant was at the top of the tyre and not either side of it. Unlike the movies the round would go all the way through the tyre....

  • 8 4
While everyone tries to be eco friendly with bio degradable sealant, these guys just put carbon fiber in sealant... I don't want to get that all over my trails.
  • 15 3
carbon fibers, minus the epoxy, is completely inert. lol. it's not nuclear waste! ffs
  • 2 0
@conoat: which is fair enough but it's not like it's make from olives though and designed to naturally degrade. Surely carbon fiber without the epoxy still has the conundrum of not breaking down easily?
  • 1 0
 (double post)
  • 1 0
@chadxhollywood: not breaking down..... that's what stable elements do..
  • 2 0
I'm a little skeptical of the test conditions.

It looks like the grass from the freshly mowed lawn mixed with the sealant as a sort of aggregate (like a bacon strip) to help patch over the hole. It'd be interesting to see how well it sealed if the tire was ridden on pavement following the puncture.

How does it fair against a Glock 9mm?
  • 3 5
I doubt the Glock would puncture the tire.
  • 11 0
@MattyBoyR6: Because the bullet cares what handgun it's coming out of and all...

@johnbalz: the bullet would penetrate, the Glock would just ftf or miss target.
  • 2 0
@johnbalz: no a bullet would not care but hitting a tire with a Glock 9mm or .40 wont do a damn thing just like hitting it with a S&W. However if the bullet is fired then that is a different story. Basically giving Dropthedebt sh*t for specifying the pistol brand, like it matters, but y'all didn't catch that.
