Val di Sole World Cup DH and XC Cancelled

Jun 3, 2020
by James Smurthwaite
Marine Cabirou annihilated the competition today a commanding way to take her debut victory.

Despite forming part of the revised World Cup season published a fortnight ago, Val di Sole has now cancelled both the World Cup XC and DH rounds that were due to take place in September. The 4X World Championships that were due to be held on the same weekend have also been cancelled.

Val di Sole is in the Trentino province of Northern Italy, a region that was hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 virus. As a result, the local authorities have banned all major mass gatherings with estimated attendance in excess of 1000 spectators where social distancing cannot be guaranteed until October 15, well after the set date for the event.

bigquotesWe are obviously disappointed that our World Cup events are not to be held in Val di Sole in 2020, but we fully back the decision taken by the Province of Trento and Trentino Marketing. We have shared with the International Cycling Union and the Italian Cycling Federation all the reasons preventing us to organize events of this stature in this juncture, and we found their complete understanding. Though there are clear improvements, the situation in Italy still requires special attention. As Tourist Board and organizers, we took part in the meetings with the assessors and competent authorities, offering our collaboration during this delicate juncture.Luciano Rizzi, Val di Sole Tourist Board's President

bigquotesThe UCI and the organisers cooperated throughout the process, initially seeking to postpone the event to a later date in the season, before agreeing to take the difficult decision to cancel the UCI World Cup round. The UCI shares the disappointment of the mountain bike community and acknowledges the Organising Committee’s concerted efforts in these difficult circumstances.UCI

Both XC and downhill racers will return to Val di Sole next year as it is the host of the 2021 mountain bike World Championships. The revised dates for 2020 races are below.

Downhill

5-6 September Lenzerheide, Switzerland - Round 1
19-20 September Les Gets, France - Round 2
5 - 11 October Leogang, Austria - World Championships
15-18 October Maribor, Slovenia – Round 3 & 4
29 October - 1st November Lousa, Portugal – Round 5 & 6
XC

5-6 September Lenzerheide, Switzerland - Round 1
19-20 September Les Gets, France - Round 2
29 September - 4 October Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic - Round 3 & 4
5 - 11 October Leogang, Austria - World Championships

Just find a few mountains in the U.S. Noone seems to give a f*ck in this country anymore.

You not only have the one of the highest contagion rates in the world but you also have some angry people roaming the streets while setting stuff on fire so maybe it’s not a good idea to go to the us for the time being?
  • 64 7
Also, don't forget random tear-gas and rubber bullet events for all citizens and tourists.

Turns out social injustice was the vaccine all along. Stay safe guys. For the rest of the world, I swear we're not all racist morons...only every other person is, lol.
  • 26 9
@unconvinced: Might be worth the risk, you may get a new TV or MacBook out of it. All in the name of racism of course.

@philmtb99: Well I said this mostly facetiously. But as an outsider, I can see how you would think I was serious.

@philmtb99: I don't know if citizens of other countries go through it, but some of what happens here can be embarrassing. There are far more amaziing and positive things happening that don't make the news.

@chriskneeland: All good brother! Every country goes through shit eventually, it’s how you come out of it on the other end that shows what the people are made of.

 @jnroyal:
So the other 200 million are the even bigger morons who didn’t bother to get off the couch and vote?

The cop who killed Floyd was wrong and has been arrested. Protest if he is not convicted. We should be demanding justice, but rioting and calling everyone who doesn't agree with you a racist doesn't do anyone any good.

  • 6 2
@philmtb99: Umm, you might consider looking at a map. The U.S. is enormous, and the majority of the best riding is well outside the hot spots for rioting and viral concerns. The media only focuses on the worst of the worst situations. The vast majority of the country is moving along just fine.
  • 6 1
@unconvinced: What "random" events? These were specifically targeted at protestors threatening violence.
And "all citizens"? Not sure what numbers you're looking it, but I can assure you 350,000,000+ Americans and visitors haven't had any issue with tear has or rubber bullets.
  • 9 6
@philmtb99: you're better at spreading fake news than our fearless leader. Per capita the U.S is at 210 cases per million compared to Germany that has 480 cases per million. Per capita is an important term that a lot of people seem to disregard.

It blows my mind that I still see Americans saying they live in the greatest country in the world. How big does your ego have to be? Even without everything that's happening right now, when judged on quality of life, overall happiness, cost of living, economy, healthcare, use of renewables, crime rates, culture, and a whole bunch of other criteria, you didn't even make the top 5.
But hey, at least you guys can buy guns easily right?
  • 4 3
If a pandemic killing 100,000 people, a tik tok dictator causing nation-wide protests and riots with potential for China level government massacres and the downfall of the world's oldest Republic is what it takes for the world to realize the incredible DH in the U.S... that seems like a fair trade. I'm down like our orange president clown.
  • 6 6
@velociraptor-clintthrust: Hey, I get why the "greatest country on Earth" tag sounds egotistical from the outside. As an American, I hear "the greatest" as a call to duty more than a self-satisfied pat on the back. America is perhaps "the greatest" in it's capacity to do the greatest good because of its democratic history and it's prosperity and influence and it's unique identity as an immigrant nation (a microcosm of all humanity). There is little doubt the U.S. has a special and impactful place in world history currently, and "greatest nation on Earth" reminds me of the responsibility to use the many privileges of being American to do the most good I can.
  • 9 7
@skidmarkbro: the difference is Germany has managed to almost halt the new contagions to a standstill whilst in the USA your hospitals (that you have to pay for because your health system doesn’t think a poor person is worth keeping alive as much as a rich person)
are resorting to storing dead bodies inside of freezer truck trailers because the morgues are filled to the brim. So tell me again why your country is the greatest? Why am I spreading fake news? I didn’t even mean to have a go at you, in just merely stating that the us AT THIS TIME is not the best country to host a sporting event that’s attended by tens of thousands of spectators.

  • 2 0
@scotttherider: Hahahahaha , that is what a street bike is for.
  • 5 2
@philmtb99: You haven't got a clue what you're talking about. The vast majority of hospitals (and I mean like 99% of them) have been much slower than normal. I believe the most recent statistic is they are down over 40% in emergency visits. Only a few hospitals ever had ICUs go to capacity. Medical employees have been laid off in mass. CDC calculates a death rate of 0.26% and that is using the inflated death count that counts people who die WITH covid and not necessarily FROM covid. Meanwhile, we've handed over our rights and allowed our economy to be destroyed. It's complete madness and then we have people like you on top of it thinking that whichever country has the most bloated corrupt medical system is somehow something to brag about. And you're wrong about poor people not getting coverage here. Go spend some time in a hospital and turn off whatever crappy news sources you use.
  • 4 2
@westeast: He’s from Germany. Everything he wrote is verbatim mainstream narrative. As with many other countries in Europe, people don’t question the institutional narrative. They somehow view government and media propaganda as the only form of credible information and anything outside as conspiracy. It’s staggering to me that people still believe institutions work in their best interests.
  • 5 0
@philmtb99: Too many people are making blanket statements about the entirety of America. No, our hospitals are not overrun nor are our morgues filled to the brim. There might be a small handful of locations with that issue (which, of course, is what gets reported about because the media loves sensationalism), but the vast majority of people and places are living life close to normally. (For the record, I'm speaking as someone who lives in a middle-class neighborhood in Los Angeles -- a city that is a focal point for both riots and viral outbreak -- and life is mostly normal at this point throughout the city.)
I'll also repeat something I mentioned earlier...the U.S. is enormous and most of the best riding venues are nowhere near the epicenters of virus or violence.

Tough times, logistics is costly. We'll see world cups in land of the free after this mess is over.
  • 2 0
 @scotttherider: hahahaha thats about right
  • 2 0
@philmtb99: To be fair, only the US spend +/-20% GDP on healthcare, Germany only half of that. More and more german physicians are leaving for CH, UK or the US and are being replaced by docs from eastern europe. As long as this migration is possible, the system can work, but it's not perfect either.

So here's what should happen. All teams fly to nz and go into 2 weeks isolation to ensure they haven't bought any virus. The entire world cup is then run with 2 week breaks in between each event, starting at the top of the country and working their way down. A sort of world cup road trip if you will. We hit level 1 soon hopefully, which means large spectator numbers not an issue. Let's go UCI make it happen!

It's way more fun acting surprised when each event is cancelled one at a time. It's kinda funny that as I started reading this article another one bites the dust started playing on my Spotify....
  • 10 1
Can they run the DH series like supercross is doing?
Send them to 1 mountain with their Team- no fans ,etc. Change up the tracks weekly and quarantine them for a few weeks and get er done
  • 2 0
I am wondering the same thing. That would be awesome and I bet the racers would also want to do something like that. However, DH might be different than supercross with the relationship between UCI, broadcast companies, and individual venues. I think some of the venues charge admission and the fans bring revenue to that local area and they need the fans in attendance to make it worth it for the resort/venue. Without a bunch of fans showing up, it might not be feasible money wise. Anybody know if this is the case?
  • 3 0

No cases for almost two weeks in New Zealand. Everyone can come here, isolate/quarantine for two weeks and then live as normal and have DH races.

If everyone starts flying back in on planes from other more affected parts of the world, that'll change pretty quickly tho right? Nice thought, but not so practical methinks.

Apologies for a little sarcasm. A bit too soon perhaps ....
Anyway,
I agree with you. If Aus or NZ opened up to the rest of the world for WC events now, they may see a rise in 'cases'. However, I believe a plane load of 50ish crew, for the film Avatar, have just landed in NZ from Los Angeles and are now in 2weeks quarantine? So perhaps the border controls ARE loosening up over there?

You and gfromars are probabily two Salvinimerda fans who believe that covid is an invention or that Bill gates will burn your brain with 5g ( if there's something left to burn). Despite every day they make less diagnostic test, they stiff find hundreds of new case in Northern italy and dozens of deaths.
There's no plan for diagnostic, nor for territorial medicine, in autumn we may face another violent epidemic rise, and you and the other a*shole that can't differ a fake from the reality are among the reasons this nation is becoming a open sky dumpster.
