The UCI Mountain Bike World Series has released all the ways to tune in and watch the 2023 World Cups with all coverage set to be available globally on GCN+.

With the coverage coming from the newly set up UCI Mountain Bike World Series viewers in 2023 can expect 135 hours of racing broadcasts with free showings of the U23 Cross-country Olympic and Junior Downhill racing alongside free semi-finals broadcast for the Elite Downhill. Both Elite XC and DH finals will be behind the paywall on GCN+ or Eurosport/discovery+ where available.

When it comes to the actual coverage of the races the press release states that with the help of Warner Bros. Discovery the broadcasts will feature "over 20 cameras on course, supplemented by three camera drones, the mountain biking viewer experience will be completely transformed at each event – offering fans entirely different angles from each venue and ensuring every major moment is captured in every single race - a first for the sport."

2023 will also see for the first time the U23 XC and Junior DH racing get live streams as the UCI Mountain Bike World Series aims to broadcast these for free on the UCI Mountain Bike World Series YouTube channel, plus UCI Mountain Bike World Series YouTube channel, GCN+, Eurosport, discovery+ and GMBN Racing.

While the DH and XC racing will get plenty of live broadcasts across a race weekend the Enduro coverage is set to remain as just in-depth highlights and behind-the-scenes coverage with the usual live timing system during the races. The XC Marathon racing will also be covered with in-depth highlights and behind-the-scenes footage.

Finally, alongside the revamp to the broadcast schedule the UCI Mountain Bike World Series has revealed who we can expect to be on the mics for the racing with Kate Mason leading the team alongside Cedric Gracia for DH and Bart Brentjens for XC. The team will also feature Josh Carlson and Hayley Edmonds as reporters. Ric McLaughlin will be acting as lead commentator for the coverage.

bigquotesI am extremely excited, of course. We are going to add new technology into this beautiful sport, drones following races, incredible views, put your seatbelt on because it’s going to be flat-out. Cedric Gracia

As well as broadening the reach of the series, Warner Bros. Discovery will revolutionise the way mountain biking is watched by fans across the globe. With over 20 cameras on course, supplemented by three camera drones, the mountain biking viewer experience will be completely transformed at each event – offering fans entirely different angles from each venue and ensuring every major moment is captured in every single race - a first for the sport.

And it’s not just the elite finals that will enjoy coverage this season, with free to air live streams of the U23 cross-country races as well as the Junior and Semi-Final downhill races on the UCI Mountain Bike World Series YouTube channel, plus UCI Mountain Bike World Series YouTube channel, GCN+, Eurosport, discovery+ and GMBN Racing.**

Meanwhile, cross-country marathon and enduro will enjoy race day highlights shows hosted on the UCI Mountain Bike World Series Youtube channel, alongside in-depth bike checks, course previews and exclusive behind the scenes content.

Fronting the new coverage will be a new talent team headed up by Kate Mason, who will anchor each of the UCI Mountain Bike World Series events broadcast on Warner Bros. Discovery platforms, starting with the first round of the 2023 UCI Cross-country World Cups from Nové Město na Moravě in May.

Mason will be joined by legendary racer Cedric Gracia as an expert commentator in downhill, while titan of the sport Bart Brentjnes will fulfil the same role for cross-country. They’ll be joined by reporters Josh Carlson and Hayley Edmonds, with Ric McLaughlin completing the team as lead commentator.

Cedric Gracia, visiting the Cube studio in London for the cycling season launch event, said: “I am extremely excited, of course. We are going to add new technology into this beautiful sport, drones following races, incredible views, put your seatbelt on because it’s going to be flat-out.”

The UCI Mountain Bike World Series kicked off last week with a double header UCI Enduro World Cup in Tasmania, and roars back into life in the Czech Republic on (11-14 May) with the UCI Cross-Country World Cup in Nové Město na Moravě, whilst the UCI Downhill World Cup live coverage starts its season in Lenzerheide, Switzerland (8-11 June).

*Coverage of the UCI Cross-Country Olympic, Cross-Country Short Track and UCI Downhill World Cups will be available globally on GCN+, and will also be shown on Eurosport and discovery+. The UCI Cross-Country Marathon and Enduro World Cups will benefit from in-depth highlights and behind the scenes coverage on the UCI Mountain Bike World Series YouTube Channel as well as GCN+.

What a coincidence that Cedric Gracia has been named "expert commentator" by the Gracia Cedric Network. Open your eyes!!
  • 44 0
well, I don't think they could say the same about Kate Mason. Tried to google her: "Kate Mason mountain biking" but found nothing. Even if the commentator isn't a professionally trained broadcaster, I find someone in the booth that has raced at that level and knows the athletes, is generally going to be superior.
  • 79 1
Oh, you think commentating is your ally.. But you merely adopted the sport; Rob was born in it, moulded by it. He didn't see the mic until he was already a racer, by then it was nothing to him but BLINDING!
  • 34 0
@trillot: I found her Twitter (I think I found the right one) and she is a broadcaster mainly focused in football. I love football as well but for mountain biking you need someone that is an expert in the sport, in racing, in Downhill terms. If this is the right person, I can't believe she was chosen be the anchor for every event Frown .

Also, good luck to Cedric, the gap he is trying to fill is huge.

At least he proves to be a brave man Smile

 @kevindh19: this is a joke
  • 13 0
@trillot: @kevindh19 it's actually unclear, they list her as "anchor" but Ric McLaughlin as "lead commentator". so maybe she leads the pre-race show, but Ric and Cedric are the commentation team for downhill, and Ric and Bart for XC?
  • 2 0
@groghunter: Ric is the EWC guy no?
  • 3 0
@homerjm: that's what i saw when i looked him up, yea
  • 37 1
Jesus wept. Have they learned nothing from the history of MTB-broadcasting train-wrecks? Exhibit A: tinyurl.com/TheyCalledHimNorby - crossover "sports" commentators have *no place* in MTB: we don't care if you've studied the theory of color commentary if you've got *zero* experience-based insight to offer. Sal Masekela has spent over two decades in the board & action-sports industry but is still barely sufferable in the box at Rampage as stoke-man with appropriate bro-lingo but zero technical expertise. GCN: if you want to sell subscriptions to actual mountain bikers *fire Kate Mason* right now, & hire someone who has actually raced a downhill bike!
  • 10 0
@groghunter: I think it's the same structure they use for GCN road race coverage. Orla Chennaoui is the anchor but she's only there for the post-race discussion in the studio at the end, and to tease / transition into other Eurosport coverage.

So during the race I think it would be all Ric/Bart/CG, then Kate joins them for a chat at the end and then says "and now check out sailing" or whatever at the very end.
  • 10 1
@groghunter: ugg I do not like how he talks/narrate EWC a bit...

@kevindh19: I thought football included racing though.... right?

@trillot: yes i read the name and said who the F is that? and then i am trying to picture Kate Mason following in the footsteps of Rob Warner....i think we know what's going on here... but who knows maybe she is awesome and has great lines like "how does this man sit w/ balls that big???!!!!" im currently shorting that stock though!

i bet all the pb staff are crying right now at the utter retardation of the majority of the comments below
  • 5 1
@bkm303: Let's pray you are right & there are zero non-riders involved in coverage of actual race: if we can fast-forward through Kate's pre-/post-race flatulence like we do Sal's at Rampage, then all is well. Except for the loss of Rob, of course...
  • 3 0
@homerjm: He's ok as he's mainly talking about summaries.
Hard to see him making the emotional connection that Rob gives.

They should just get the Marble racing guys. If they can make that exciting...
  • 4 0
@psycln: No. SHe's not following in the footsteps of Rob Warner. She's the anchor, not the lead commentator. She'll introduce the show and be a part of the post race discussion.
  • 6 3
@homerjm: Ric does a decent job with EWS/EWC summary videos and interviews I think, I don't mind him, but he has absolutely not shown the ability to bring the excitement needed for a downhill finals live broadcast. Ugh... Cedric is hilarious but they need someone who can commentate with the right level of energy and pace. Should've gotten Needles.

I don't think he is doing the action commentary. More a news reader anchor role
this is what I wrote below...

He seems like a great guy.

I had been critical of his commentary before.
Mainly for the fact that I find his accent charming but very hard to understand,
and worse when commentating during action. English is my first language, well after foul.

I have no ill will against him, Scotland or the Scottish. My first and last names are Scottish, and I have a voice like a strangled cat! Commentary is very very difficult. We were very privileged to have Warner for free.

I actually sent them contact details for a world class voice and presentencing coaching I know in Australia.
I hope they did it for both ours and their sakes. they still have time as we know that they are in aus at the moment.

I was presently surprised when watching the highlights. and I just rewatched it again.
I think he has greatly improved and was very good at doing the intros and anchor man and over to you Jim role as well as his interview at 23.00. He is also good at pieces to camera when not adding excitement. 8/10

His action commentary part of the video was not as good (which he won't be doing in the future it sounds). As he adds excitement, and his speech quickens his accent increases and becomes harder to understand. The THs and FFs become discombobulated as SSs lose control. his SSSs are always problematic. I know some world class orthodontist, but they are not in Scotland. 6.8/10 all because of phonetics

I hope for the next video they let Josh do the action commentary and possibly with Cedric as a dry run. and record his live commentary he does at the venue over the Pa for training purposes. Josh might be good on the PA, but his non live "shouty man" commentary he did with Ric 3 or 4 rounds ago, I found it abysmal. A generous 2/10.
I would much rather have Ric than Shouty Man Josh

My comments from Montana video
gcrider (Sep 19, 2022 at 2:02)
I think it was there best video yet.
I really enjoyed Rics single person commentary over the 2-person set up with faux excitement that they have had recently. (The main reason I don’t watch WRC)
The camera and drone work is great. Congrats on that amazing drone crash shot!
But I agree they need more camera operators.
The audio was also way better than the last video (no shouting man in this one thank God)
Speaking of god. What does biblically tight mean? (Mr google does not know either)
Thanks for great vid
I am looking forward to the next round after seeing this vid.

@chris-b-mtb Feel free to contact me for those contact details and other ways I can help

 @gcrider: He is not Scottish...
  • 4 0
@gcrider: He has a weird accent, totally agree. Maybe not the best choice if you are looking to be watch by an international audience.
We would miss Claudio spelling names in the correct way hehehehe.
  • 11 0
@gcrider: He's from Norn Iron (Northern Ireland - but the contraction is a joke about the accent).
My issue isn't his accent, it's that he delivers everything in the same fake-excited tone, lacks nuance or insight and tries (unsuccessfully) to put a bombastic spin on everything in the EWS coverage.
  • 2 1
 @danzer30: Opps sorry
I'm more of an idiot than I thought.
  • 1 0
 @chakaping:
I think the Fake excitement will go if they actually tape it live.
I can't fake excitement when I know what my Christmas presents are.
  • 2 0
@gcrider: haha, I hope you are right and maybe that's why he seems like someone doing an impression of what he thinks a commentator should sound like.
I'd just like someone more measured, experienced (in DH racing) and insightful in the lead role.
  • 1 0
 He’s a self-nepotist

@g123: 2 of my favorite things: Mountain Biking and Batman. You sir, have made my day!

@kevindh19 The redbull in Brazil had an enthusiastic MTB narrator and last year it was replaced by a soccer narrator. horrible. I can't watch. Lucky there was Rob in the English language. And now????????

@powturn: or just ridden a bike that wasn't in a spin studio
  • 192 2
Less time watching races => more time riding.
  • 52 4
Good perspective, but I'm not done talking shit taking about enduro and Chris Ball, who destroyed the foundation of World Cup DH racing. Long term effect will be downhill racers making less money from less exposure, attracting less talent to the sport and less teams involved.
  • 28 0
Watching with breakfast before a Sunday ride was so good though
  • 84 1
I need this dumbed down more.

If I have Discovery+ in the U.S., can I watch people ride bikes? Or do I still need to pony up for GCN or whatever?

Maybe I'm old, but this shouldn't be so convoluted.
  • 20 2
Same here. Never heard of GCN. Is there a secret portal I have to enter through?
  • 25 1
GCN (global Cycling network) is originaly the first youtube channel dedicated to road cycling. It rapidly grew up and develop a sister youtube channel named GMBN (Global mountain bike network). As there succes increase but revenues on youtube were low, they develop a streaming media named GCN+ featuring long documentary and, with eurosport buying the company, live Road and cyclocross racing. So now they also have the MTB. Concerning the price in Euro you can end up to 3€/mounth if you take the annual subscription.
  • 102 7
@chriskneeland: GCN: "Try this one simple trick to improve your wattage" and "Bikes shops hate this one simple trick" and GMBN "Try this one simple hack to improve your wheelies!" and "Still bunny-hopping? Pro-MTBers do this instead"

They do support Martyn Ashton so that's nice, but the majority of it is click-bait cycling content.
  • 55 49
@BikesBoatsNJeeps: Agreed, GMBN and even moreseo GCN (because they're roadies) are a bunch of wankers.
  • 9 0
I'm wondering if buying a GCN+ subscription will work in the US, or if this is like with the Olympics where if you don't have a cable TV package that includes Discovery + you can't watch.
  • 19 2
@BikesBoatsNJeeps: Martyn supports them, more like.
  • 24 0
@OpeSorryAbootThat: I am not sure if you actually watch any of the road racing or not, but Sean Kelly and Robbie McEwen are, IMHO, two of the best commentators available.
  • 19 1
 @BikesBoatsNJeeps: Maybe its changed,
Im not a roadie, but I love roadie tech, and the GCN Tech show was usually pretty good.
The GCN shows in general were pretty good actually, good news contenct, etc.
For some reason I couldnt ever get into the GMBN channel. not sure why. I was pleased to see Quinney pop at PinkBike, I quite liked him on GMBN
  • 20 3
GCN has a bit for everyone to be honest, some of the YT videos are a bit redundant for an experienced cyclist, but I personally have no issue paying for a GCN subscription, having road racing, mtb racing, and a bit more under one subscription is way more worth it to me than half the other dumb stuff we pay for with subscriptions. Also, if you haven't started watching road racing give it a shot. With MVDP, Wout, Pidcock, and Pogi, it is probably the most exciting it has been in years.
  • 27 2
@als802: For MTB, if you pay for GCN+ you can watch all Enduro, XC and DH events in the US.

If you’re interested in road or cross it’s more complicated: GCN/Eurosport shows basically all these races in Europe, but many of the bigger races (e.g. monuments, Tour de France) are owned by other broadcasters in the US. A simple and effective workaround is to get a good VPN, set your location to Europe and log in to GCN+. This allows you to watch pretty much all cycling of any kind. I pay for both a VPN (Nord) and GCN+, but find it totally worth the money ($70/year more or less) for the amount of entertainment I get.
  • 18 3
@Drew-O: thats a sensible, and well thought out comment, with important info, and no whinging or pitchfork wielding.
Well done sir, have a kick ass day!
  • 15 0
To directly answer your question, I believe that Discovery and Discovery+ will not show the mtb series in the US. You will need to subscribe to GCN+ which is a different streaming service. The cost of GCN+ is $9 a month or $50 a year. It shows not just the UCI MTB series but a lot of road races and cyclocross races as well. If you only care about Enduro or Marathon racing, then you don't have to subscribe to anything. Highlights will be shown after the race on youTube. There seems to be no live feed for those races.

GCN+ is available on all web browsers, Amazon FireTV, Samsung Smart TV, AndroidTV, Chromecast, Apple AirPlay and Apple TV.

The US streaming calendar is here:

@BikesBoatsNJeeps: You've nailed it in one ha
  • 3 0
@Onetrakcmind: In the UK we have highlights shows for the Giro and Vuelta on Discovery backed channels. We have live coverage and highlights of the TDF and a lot of the classics on ITV. Comparing the two, the commentary on ITV is vastly superior, Carlton Kirby is awful.
  • 2 0
@als802: it works in the US
  • 4 0
@MathiasBd: never liked those channels, further increasing my disdain for paying for these races.
  • 8 0
GCN/GMBN feels like there are 6 heavily sponsored clickbaity video's to one actual decent one, so just watch selectively and ignore all product opinion!

I will get gcn+, and just pay monthly for the 5 months of DH racing. Some of the other vids could be quite good.
  • 2 1
@BikesBoatsNJeeps: hahahahahaha comment of the century.
  • 1 0
No way to watch on Roku, we're ded like 26ers
  • 3 0
And things get more complicated to view World Champs which will be broadcast by some other company (Flobikes) for more $.
  • 1 1
I'm still confused? This coverage will be on Discovery+ $7/mo on Prime? (guess that other guy answer - sounds like NOPE)
  • 3 1
@BikesBoatsNJeeps: PB does it too: "how to actually manual", "how to wheelie like a pro". BTW, there are no "one simple thing" videos popping up on a search with gmbn
  • 2 1
@666eric666, it's not that confusing. Everything but Enduro and marathon is on gcn+ and Eurosport and discovery+. If you already have access to _any_ of those, you're set
  • 8 0
@MathiasBd: So your saying that the UCI MTB broadcasts is ruled by lycra wearing overlords.
  • 5 2
@BikesBoatsNJeeps: its not though. GCN+ Racing have the best announcers in the sport and a huge calendar of road events. Their road race coverage is so good I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt.
  • 1 1
@OnTheRivet: I find Carlton Kirby extremely annoying, but agree that their other announcers and commentators (McEwen, Sean Kelly) are excellent. Given the number or races you can watch with GCN+ and a VPN, this is the best entertainment-related money I spend in a year.
  • 3 0
@CarlMega: Not in North America. Discovery+ in North America (not sure about Mexico) is a completely different beast than the rest of the world. You will need GCN+
  • 1 0
@Drew-O: Hahaha, same about Carlton Kirby with Jose Been a close second. Rob Hatch, Matt Stephen's and Dan Lloyd are a great team.
  • 3 0
@Drew-O: I don't know if you guys get the same team as we do in the UK, but Bradley Wiggins was just plain embarrassing at last year's Giro.
  • 3 0
@jwon1: $50 per year isn't bad, but if they provide replays of the MTB races then I can just sign up for select months and watch what's available. Does it say if they'll have the full races available as replays like Redbull did?
  • 7 0
@uphill-blues: They say this on their website. I assume on demand means previous races. But I am not experienced in GCN+ myself:
Full races and highlights available on demand in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch and Japanese

If you are only interested in DH racing, then I believe you only need to get three months of GCN+ for $27. Sign up for June 9th to July 2nd (3 races), Cancel within one month of signup date. Rejoin August 23rd to October 8th (2 months, 5 races). Cancel before two months. Those are the race dates so you can sign up earlier in August and still keep to 2 months.

There is one XC race in Nove Mesto on May 12th to the 14th. So its 4 months if you want cross country.
  • 2 1
@Offrhodes: I would happily accept Sean Kelly as the new DH commentator.
  • 2 0
@jwon1: Dude thanks for doing the math! I like some of the XC races (the ones on the rougher courses), but I'd probably watch the Enduro races now that they're available.
  • 3 0
@uphill-blues: Just to clarify, 7 of those 8 races for $27 have both Downhill and Cross-Country races. Some of them also have Enduro events as well. So I think if you do the 3 month $27 idea, you will see all but one Cross-country event. You will only miss that one race in May.
  • 1 0
@onawalk: it's hard to "get into" their show because we're not 15 years old anymore. They seem to aim for the youth demo.
  • 5 3
@chriskneeland: Well, you haven't really missed anything. GCN, GMBN and GMBN Tech are some of the worst examples of modern media. Most of their youtube presence consits of heavily sponsored advertisements and low-effort clickbait content.
  • 1 0
Discovery + in the states does not carry live sports. That includes racing. Discovery + in the states = no bike racing.
  • 3 0
Went into checking out GCN+ yearly $50 since I guess Disc+ ain't it. Was like "cool, maybe I can watch some of the road racing too - they advertise the heck out of it. very proud". Man, that US exclusion list... Bunch of other hassles and VPN work-arounds.... forget it. Sucks as I'll miss DH and XC live both of which I really liked on RBTV. Prob more dependent on portal/aggregators like PB now but that's ok. Ya'll let me know how it works out.
  • 1 1
@Offrhodes: GCN+ Racing is the best thing that's ever happened to cycling and broadcasting! We stream live bike racing in the shop almost every day, then I go home and watch the replays. As you say, commenting is also spot on.
If they do a similarly good job with mountainbiking it'll be fabulous.
  • 1 0
@jwon1: Don't forget we get semi-finals and finals in a 2 day period. That's like having 2x the races cause semi-finals are going to be just as important as finals if not more so..can't wait.
  • 83 4
So the "anchor" is a football journalist / commentator? Yikes.
  • 3 1
I've seen some of her stuff, from 9 yrs ago, she's really good. She is sharp on key moments but also folds in the athletes current ranking, what the event means for them and the overall etc. That, combined with Cedric may actually work out well.
  • 82 9
I refuse to pay GCN any money. GMBN is painful to watch, I hope that none of their presenters are used.
  • 45 0
You mean you don't like listicle style videos about the best type of socks to do wheelies in?
  • 2 5
Funny thing, the german version of gmbn is pretty good and has useful information
  • 4 0
@Stokedonthis: Germans love the faux efficiency of one simple trick to cornering you would never guess
  • 59 0
I don't find Cedric to be that good of a commentator in french already unfortunatly, so in english... Hope i am wrong, but Rob and Eliot will surely be greatly missed. Wait and see
  • 2 0
Yeah, drinking too much RedBull alone in the commentary booth! Hopefully he'll be fine if someone is there to hold his hand.
  • 1 0
@Maxcommencemal: Yeah, I must admit that I have been always swtching to english to have Rob comments instead of Cedric's even if they were in French. That's also right that he was alone behing de mic. Good luck Cedric !
  • 2 0
@Maxcommencemal: was Cedric working solo on the French commentary?
  • 5 0
@chakaping: he was and in true Gracia style turned up the hype as the race progressed. Just often there would be more excitement than substance, but even a character as strong as CG would have trouble holding a conversation with himself for a few hours!
  • 2 0
@Maxcommencemal: That's a tough gig for sure Big Grin
I hope whoever is commentating will get some guidance and tutoring via Discovery anyway.
  • 1 0
I was wondering how he was in French, I saw he was the French language commentator for the Red Bull Cerro Abajo.
  • 54 4
They have huge shoes to fill with Rob missing in the commentating booth. While Cedric might bring some madness to the table and probably be a good fit, that Mason girl will not be a great fit because she does not seem to have any DH (or BMX) background.
But I don't care too much because I won't pay for the streams anyway

@cro-magnon: You do realize commentary styles are not technology and they don't follow moores law? You can easily check how traditional sports presenting looks by ... looking at the NBC MTB World Champs feed (it was bad). Or Looking at other sports feeds. You know which sports have the best commentators? The ones where commenting is done by people who love and care for the sport. The silted "made for TV" comentary sucks in literally every sport. This is why traditional team sports commentary is fairly boring compared to for example how good was MMA commentary when the sport was young and commenters cared and knew the sport.

The media houses didn't change their style SINCE 2000s (that was when Eurosport had DH, not just 90s). Not in a significant way that is. I would know. I work for a huge TV corp. What is proritized is "safe", middle of the road, "presentable", bland delivery.

 Why should it be free?

We will see if discovery is the right partner to cover this sport, but I won’t mind paying if it’s worth it.
  • 82 21
@tomdh: Cause it's been free for 10+ years. That is why.
  • 39 22
@tomdh: Why shouldn't it be free? Red Bull coverage was good (maybe not great) and it was free.

I'm happy that you will pay for it, and so is Discovery. They could blow Red Bull coverage out of the water and I ( and many others) will still not pay so they can make a profit. It might be petty but my mentality is that not everything needs a price.
  • 19 9
@tomdh: Exactly! Time will tell whether it's the right decision. However, the sport wasn't going to fulfil its potential on Red Bull....it was merely preaching to the converted. If it wants big money sponsors from outside cycling, then it needs to do something else.
  • 19 5
@tomdh: You want to pay to watch adverts?
  • 36 15
@ZSchnei: It costs a shed load of money to film and broadcast, why should you get to view that for free? I don't understand why people think they should get a quality product for free.
Red bull broadcast it for "free" so they could advertise their energy drink for "free"
wise up.
  • 20 9
@ZSchnei: Red Bull TV wasn’t “free”. It was a big marketing gig for them. You paid for the coverage. Just not directly.
  • 10 2
@LemonadeMoney: Never seen an advertisement in the last three years watching sports on Eurosport Player/Discovery+
  • 20 22
@cessman: I don't purchase Red Bull drinks, so regardless of their advertising I didn't pay a dime to watch any coverage.

The reality is that coverage such as this is completely uneccesary, it's a luxury that we've all enjoyed by way of Red Bull for the last 10 years. Your mindset is the reason quality has to have a price, you're willing to pay for anything.

Wise up.
  • 19 2
@Fortuneteller: How did I pay for the coverage, indirectly? I certainly didn't buy any Red Bull products because I think they're "cool". I could care less what Red Bull gained from me watching their content, in the end I didn't pay a dime.
  • 8 5
@ZSchnei: Presumably you were happy for RB to profit from it. Just because you watched it without paying for it they did it as a purely commercial venture. They lost the contract because they weren’t prepared to pay as much for the rights because they couldn’t make it profitable. They were never in it for any other reason

  • 10 1
@cessman: well, following your logic racing itself is advertising, so why should you pay to be advertised to? Redbull go it, on top of the team's sponsors you where being advertised Redbull left and right, so they kept it free. Now the broadcasting itself is the product, so let's see what happens.
  • 5 8
@iiman: So are the 5.10 shoes you wear, and the big splashy fox jersey, and so on.
Its all advertising, and most will happily splash out $100 for a polyester Dakine jersey that offers little to no benefit over any other polyester jersey out there.

Its all advertising and marketing, to strengthen the brand, the brand is eternal, the brand is the most important thing
  • 14 6
@ZSchnei: If you're getting something for "free" it's because you're the product.
  • 3 5
@ZSchnei: fair enough. If you’ve got a boss suggest that to them. . . .I’m sure they’ll be happy to let you work for free. If you worked for me id let you turn up do what you need to do all without any price! Hopefully this improves the coverage and eventually filters down to the riders . . .I enjoyed the viewing being free on Redbull but I recognise it won’t get better without money being put in . . . But maybe I’m wrong and it actually needs for less investment . . .maybe even no money at all
  • 6 0
Seems logical to me. Redbull used the platform as advertising. Whoever owns it now does not use it for that. I mean think about it - are you more likely to buy a Discovery+ subscription because you're watching DH on it? There's some brand connection between Redbull and action spots which does not exist for Warner Bros. In addition to that, if you increase production costs that has to get paid for somehow.

Long story short - purchasing these broadcasting rights is an investment. They want a net-positive payoff and selling subs is how they plan to do that. Not shocking.
  • 10 7
@onawalk: I don't pay for cable, nor any streaming service. My phone and internet are critical for work, paying for Discovery to air once free content is not. That's how it's different.

I'm sorry that you feel everything has a price and nothing is free. I do plenty of things to ensure I don't pay for everything.
  • 11 2
@Starch-Anton: "sport wasn't going to fulfill its potential"????

Are you kidding me? As an advertising medium?? As an economic driver?? I mean jesus christ its just bikes. This isn't football or any of the traditional professional sports and thats one of the very unique things about it.

If a cyclist falls in the woods and the larger world audience isn't aware of the sport, did it really happen - is that the point we're at now?
  • 6 2
@onawalk: Brand recognition doesn't count for anything if you never buy any of their products, in this case energy drinks. Ultimately ZSchnei is right, if they are not buying any redbull products, they are not paying for it indirectly. I'm not 100% sure if I've ever bought Redbull, maybe in a nightclub once with vodka but this would have been an exception for me, hard to see how I am indirectly paying for their coverage
  • 17 6
@iiman: I never once saw an ad for their energy drinks. Just their other media programs. And guess what they did the same for mtb if you watched their other media programs. They were hugely successful in bringing mtb to the eyes of millions of action sports fans. Click on the Red Bull app and uci mtb was on the main channel every live event and very often beyond that. They have way way more reach on YouTube than gcn. Not even a remotely close comparison.

Red Bull did an amazing job of bringing this sport to the mainstream while still respecting everything that made the sport great. The uci simply sold out the rights for easy money. I’ll happily eat my words if proven wrong. But a pay wall to watch the finals is going to likely wreak havoc on viewership and I have very little faith they can make semifinals and recaps quality enough to bring new fans to the sport. All the while discovery is going to try to make the sport as commercially friendly as possible to attract sponsors that do not give one shit about the sport other than how many viewers will see their advertisements.

Red Bull was undoubtedly a passionate partner that served the sport extremely well. They took rob and made him into one of the Best broadcasters in sports. Their broadcasts attracted a huge sponsor in Mercedes not that it helped the sport at all as opposed to lined the uci’s pockets.

Discovery so far is simply taking money out of fans pockets and the teams as well by greatly increasing entry costs. We’ll see if Long term they bring more money in but downhill and xc are only going to grow of viewership increases drastically and I see no reason this format would do anything but the opposite.
  • 7 4
@Starch-Anton: the big money is what we don’t want for this sport.
  • 6 3
@rambotion2: I have a feeling that if you used the redbull TV app, or watched online, your data was sold. That's where you're paying for it.

You think Red Bull wasn’t paid to broadcast by the fees to organize events the same way discovery/eso will be.
  • 4 3
@5afety3rd: one race on RBTV comes in roughly at 250.000 viewers (I’ve seen the PowerPoint). So how can they do it for rally but not MTB? Right, big companies running the teams, people don’t have to worry about the pay check and can fully concentrate on the sport, competition gets better,…
  • 1 2
@5afety3rd: of course they will, and i never said otherwise. In fact I didn't mention them at all.
  • 8 0
@bulletbassman: to be fair, 90% of red bull revenues are from drink sales (6 billion/year) The content creation/F1 is literally just to support the drink sales.

The funny part is, discovery doesn’t have a product to sell, just marketing space to sell. So it’s a loss lose for viewers having to pay. Instead of one title sponsor, we’ll have many many sponsors and the commercials that come with them.
  • 6 2
@bulletbassman: do you have any idea how this stuff works?

To your first point, no redbull does not have a hugely profitable media company. Redbull media makes very little money. Like others have pointed out, redbull media is used by the company simply as a form of in house advertising. It’s in most cases break even or money losing on its own. Some ventures like F1 may turn some profit but it’s a drop in the bucket of redbull’s overall profits. I read somewhere that 98% of redbulls revenue comes from selling the drinks.

To your second point, no redbull was not paid to broadcast races. Thats literally the exact opposite of how it works. Redbull or discovery has to pay the UCI for the rights to the broadcast. Since redbull showed it for free and ran no ads for outside products on the broadcast, they likely made no direct revenue off showing the races. The value up them was solely brand recognition and advertising the drinks.
  • 4 0
@tomdh: Mercedes Benz paid RedBull a buttload of money to be on 100% free platform, so the economics can work. Free > having 20 cameras and drones.
  • 3 2

  • 6 0
@grnmachine02: You don't need to give them any data to watch redbull tv so other then what they can work out about you, that you like mtb, they don't have much to sell. Some sources state that 90% of their income comes from the sale energy drinks, if you don't buy their drinks (and I don't, its a crap product although I love what they sponsor) they're getting either nothing or so little from you that you are getting their DH broadcasts genuinely for free, not like facebook/pinkbike etc where the advertising revenue that they get from you pays for the service that they're providing
  • 2 2
@Fortuneteller: RB didn’t do anything for rally, rally did something for redbull.

car manufacturers using rally racing for technical product development > bike manufacturers using DH racing to drive sales to Dads

In Motorsport, only the most elite can afford to race, is that what you want for MTB too?
  • 3 2
@rambotion2: Thats not entirely true, brand recognition creates a value outside of the products sold. The companies borrow on that value to invest.
The brand is everything, its not just the individual product.

Have you ever wondered how an energy drink company can do the things they do, its not just from selling you cans of sugary wings.

the brand is everything, and we all know the brand.
  • 1 4
@5afety3rd: thats not entirely true, grass roots racing exists in all forms of motorsport, just as it does in cycling.
without a grassroots feeder program, there would be no elite level racing
  • 4 0
@onawalk: grassroots stage rally racing is still insanely expensive. Car and safety equipment alone are well outside most people budgets. A bicycle is vastly cheaper. That’s actually how I got into MTB racing, a DH bike costs less than a good set of coilovers for a car.

 @tomdh:

Because it's 2023.

Maybe it's different in the UK but in NA nobody born in the last 25 years has cable tv or subscribes to sports channels.

The viewership of every major sport is shrinking. The average age of their viewers is going up nearly one year per year in many cases, and the old fashioned paywalled-sports-channel model is dying. Channels like ESPN are shedding viewers and laying off staff and the stakeholders in every major sports team and league are kept up at night trying to figure out how to follow the audience to where it lives today before it's too late.

As a sport that was broadcast online for free, this one was already ahead of those guys. But you're telling me a plan that goes backwards to copy them is "the future of this sport"?

*How are going to grow your audience by copying a model that has a shrinking audience?*

The younger generations still spend lots of time watching things on screens, but they don't want to pay up front. The barrier to entry has to be as low as possible. They'll sit through piles of ad supported content once they're watching, and they'll even hand out their own money AS they watch, a lot like throwing coins into a busker's guitar case as you watch him perform. But you can't charge them just to get a look.

At the very least this plan needs a free to watch WITH ads option along side the pay to watch ad free one.
  • 2 5
@ZSchnei: you get it though right, as much as youre trying to portray yourself as a luddite, you understand that the brand recognition is much more important than the individual sale of an energy drink.

you also understand that being an energy drink, or something small and instantly recognizable that athletes can hold in their hand at virtually all times is important right?
like frigidaire has a harder time justifying that sort of sponsorship cause you have a hard time holding a microwave in your hand at all times.

The brand trades on the value of what it is, not just sales of individual items.
Its great, dont drink the stuff, or watch TV, or use the internet, but dont try to kid yourself that you, or anyone else is immune to the effects and power of being bombarded by constant brand images.

Also, being on PB is critical for work?
  • 2 1
@onawalk: brand recognition amongst people who will never buy your product, and a lot pf people will never buy Red Bull, doesn't create value, and won't help a company to borrow, and Red Bull claims not to borrow money anyway:

economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/trade/exports/insights/the-red-bull-billionaires-secret-recipe-for-success/articleshow/95157536.cms?from=mdr

Red Bull's trick is selling a product that costs them pennies (cents) to make for an average of £1.75 in the UK, which they do via heavy marketing but those that watch their stuff but don't buy their drinks are worth nothing to them

MTB racing at the elite level is still an expensive endeavour.
  • 2 3
@tacopop: You might be right, but in the recent past Liberty Media spent a metric shittonne of money for the rights to F1, which I think has a growing viewership, especially amongst younger viewers. It might actually be driving out older, viewers that have been passionate about the sport for a long time.

The Netflix series (which you'll need to pay for) has certainly helped quite a lot.

The only way to watch in NA is to have access to those sports channels.
  • 5 6
I’m stunned at the overall level of entitlement a lot of people are displaying here. You’re not entitled to anything for free, to believe otherwise is naive at best. Anyone providing a good or service is entitled to compensation for their effort/risk if you choose to partake in its benefits. You don’t deserve free stuff. We can argue all day about who is ultimately paying, and via what means, but absolutely nothing is free. Someone is paying, and if it’s not you directly, you’re being subsidized by someone else.
  • 8 1
@onawalk: I've answered this question multiple times now - I completely understand that it's more than just a product, and that I "paid" in other ways but that doesn't bother me. What matters to me is that nothing came out of my pocket in order to watch DH races through Red Bull. I can't communicate this any more clear.

I also never argued that brand images don't have power or an effect on anyone, you made this up.

I'm also far from a luddite and not attempting to portray myself as one, I just pick and choose what's important to me instead of choosing to live by the mindset that nothing is free, everything has a price. Marketing also has an effect on me, I just choose to see through what's complete bullshit and what might benefit me as a consumer.

I'm still baffled by the fact you keep mentioning internet - I already said I pay for it as it's important for me to complete my work.

You have a knack for twisting others words into whatever helps you prove a point. And yes, if it makes you feel better, PB is a critical part of my day.

No, we did not. You're contradicting yourself. In every company on earth marketing is treated as a cost of generating revenue, not as revenue itself. Redbull spent money to market to us or "buy" our views. We were the product, not the ones paying. The coverage was absolutely, by any definition, free to the viewer.
  • 2 0

  • 3 0
@Fortuneteller: "So you wouldn’t pay for a ticket to see the races live at the venue?"

Where did I say that? Some people in this conversation either fail to grasp or purposefully ignore that a lot of us make conscious choices about what has value for us and what doesn't. I've never paid to watch a mountain bike race in my life, live or on TV, but who knows - maybe watching live will one day be valuable enough to me to pay and get advertised to. Or maybe not. TV coverage? No chance. At least the venue tickets partially cover the venue's cost to UCI/Discovery, so you're not just paying to get marketed to. You're paying for a place for racers to race at.

I'm not getting ridiculous. You need to make up your mind and figure out what your own point is. In one post you say that redbull TV wasn't free "beacuse advertising" and in the next you say Discovery needs to be paywalled "because no advertising". In reality, neither broadcast has 3rd party ads, but both include branding/sponsorship/product placement. Or to make it easier for you, redbullTV is just as "ad-free" for the viewer as Discovery+ by what seems to be your definition of "ads".

Amazing to see people in here defending Discovery and acting like Redbull was crap. Never once saw a single ad about their energy drinks on Redbull TV, only ads for other mtb shows that all looked awesome.

@olafthemoose: I'd be fine paying if I knew the athletes saw a share of that money.
  • 2 1
@DylanH93: “Never once saw a single ad about their energy drinks on Redbull TV”.

Yes you did. The entire redbull broadcast (like all of their events and media) is one giant ad for energy drinks. The only product redbull sells is drinks. Anything with their name or logo on it is an add for energy drinks. It’s the entire reason redbull media exists.
  • 1 1
@jenksy: even if they aren’t seeing direct payment from it athletes get paid by sponsors to promote products. The more exposure and people watching, the more they will get paid. You think you are sticking it to Discovery but in the process you are also potentially f*cking over the riders.
  • 6 0
@sino428: no shit lol, I happily would have paid redbull in addition to the athletes holding cans of the drink because I like the company and what they do. Discovery, not so much. They're also vastly raising entrance fees for racers and teams and cutting down on the amount of riders, so this argument "it's for the riders benefit" is bs. This is going to make it worse for everyone and I'm betting right now, viewership is going to take a nosedive in the next two years. They bought the rights because it was getting so popular then they tore out everything that made it popular in the first place.
  • 1 3
@DylanH93: so from the perspective of the riders do you think they would rather you not pay to watch in order to show your displeasure with Discovery or keep watching which will maintain their exposure and ability to make money fro their sponsorships?

Maybe discovery is not ideal, from either a fan and rider standpoint, but it’s what we have right now. Like it or not the ability of the riders to make money is now more or less directly tied to discovery’s ability to make money. I personally would like riders to make as much as they can, even if that means paying discovery.
  • 4 0
@sino428: I'll just watch the semi-finals twice instead
  • 1 2
@jenksy: do whatever you want, just don’t claim to care about the sport or the riders making money.

Maybe they won’t make anymore money by you paying since you were watching the free broadcasts anyway, but they can certainly let start losing money if people stop watching.
  • 2 0
@sino428: I really doubt the riders will be making more money. Discovery isn't doing this out of charity because they want to help the riders. They're going to skim every penny possible because profit is all they care about. In some ways it may be better to just die off quickly so it can move back to someone invested in the sport like Redbull. Ideal scenario, Redbull has rights to broadcast, they charge a fee for races like $5/month and riders get paid more.
  • 2 1
@DylanH93: better to die off quickly? Better for who? Most likely not the riders. It’s easy for you to say stuff like this sitting behind your computer with no real vested interest, but if this discovery deal is a total flop the riders are likely to suffer for it.

Selfishly I’d love to still have the redbull and Rob Warner, all for free, but again that’s not the current situation we’re are in.
  • 2 0
@sino428: I'm talking riders and the sport in general. Yea, it's going to suck in the short term but better in the long term. I don't mean to be pessimistic but I really doubt Discovery is going to be good for anyone. Obviously I wish the riders the best here and hope it does work out. But they're taking away everything that makes the sport great. Maybe even better solution is Redbull starts their own dh race series and the riders make more money by diching the UCI.

Pretty sure that your money pays for cameras, camera operators, drones, drone operators, commentators, transportation, infrastructure, editors, and bandwidth.

Athletes aren’t employees of GCN, so why would they pay them?
  • 3 0
@hllclmbr: Is GCN paying for any of that, or are they just owning the rights to broadcast?
  • 1 0
 @grnmachine02:

I’m under the impression that they are paying for all of that. Otherwise, who is?
  • 1 0
@hllclmbr: I genuinely don't know. I have a friend that runs a wire camera company. They get paid by the arena generally, then whoever owns the rights to broadcast. I was just curious.
  • 1 0
 @hllclmbr: teams and event organizers.
  • 9 1
@TannerValhouli Well if your statement is true then buy the subscription.

No pro athlete making proper $ does so without viewership. If viewership increases riders will 100% benefit monetarily.

NFL, F1, you name it...they all started small - but ya, - insert "Pro Super Star Athlete" here - makes his/her money because nobody watches them, right?

And nobody pays to watch them, right?

Support it, and grow it. Or just Talk the talk.
  • 4 0
@hllclmbr: pretty sure that was paid by redbull before and it was paid from ad money. So unless we get bigger track coverage I expect this to simply be a bigger profit margin push.
  • 4 0
@GeneralGroovus: this is the point people missing. All the people saying “f*ck discovery, none of the money goes directly to the riders” are not taking into account that the riders can certainly start losing money from sponsorships if viewership goes down.
  • 4 1
@sino428: Copy that - hoping the new broadcast team knock it out of the park, for the sake of the riders, team members, local organizers, and fans.

The subscription fee is a massive bargain, 8 races and the Worlds on a proper streaming service with increased production value for the price of a couple pairs of grips. How is this even a thing?

Can't wait for the season to start! 100% subscribing. The riders are worth every penny.

Kate who ?! Sounds garbage. RIP DH..
  • 22 0
I had to look her up. At first it was concerning because it seemed like she only had experience with football (aka soccer). But then I saw that she also has experience reporting on squash (the sport. Unclear on her bonafides re: vegetables). So yeah, I'm sure she'll be great.
  • 9 0
@toast2266: ahhh.... that's why I couldn't find her on google - I was trying to search "Kate Mason mountain biking" - got nothing. Always a bit concerning when they have no real experience in the sport. Best commentators seem to not only know the sport but know the athletes.
  • 25 0
Yeah $16aud per month for a single sport subscription ain't gonna happen unfortunately. Highlight videos it is for me.
  • 26 1
These comments will be well though out and balanced I’m sure.

No more Sunday morning coffee and DH. Bummer.
  • 12 0

  • 2 0
I have no issue with paying but hiring someone with no cycling experience as a commentator/presenter is dumb. The stream needs to be worth our money
  • 21 2
So we can watch the Semi-final for free, might just treat that as the final and ignore the other one happens.
  • 2 1
Exactly! No need for another race. One and done!
  • 6 0
Last year's Junior DH would have been the one to watch.
  • 23 3
 Cue dumpster fire
  • 18 2
I don't necessarily have any issue with paying, I have an issue giving my money to Discovery. I don't trust that they have this sport's best interest at heart.
  • 5 1
Ultimately they don’t, they just want to increase their bottom line, but if growing DH is a way to achieve greater profits, and they can pull it off, then it’s win-win
  • 3 0
Exactly my thoughts. Redbull cared about progressing the sport. Things like Rampage and Hardline are sick, not to mention all the other action sports they promote. I'd happily have paid Redbull for world cup races. I don't want to give any money to Discovery.
  • 1 0
I wonder how much will actually end up in the wallets of the people who are racing and organizing vs how much will go to Discovery executives...

@DylanH93: but their drink is toxic garbage so...
  • 17 5
The first race will show how the broadcast experience really is. Doing so before that is just speculation and a waste of time. Sure, Rob will be impossible to match, but let's wait and see. However guys, all these "it's not free anymore", "I won't pay a cent" comments really make me giggle. Are you serious? That thing costs 6,99 € per month. You need 4 months and can watch 8 DH races + the World Champs. Now I won't calculate it for you, but if you get excited about that amount, I think you are in the wrong sport. Good things don't always come for free, especially not in cycling. If it turns out to be good, I will be absolutely glad to support DH Mountainbiking by subscribing rather than being targeted and marketed by a soda seller whose energy drink I don't like.

  • 3 1
I think it's not that people are unwilling to pay, they're unwilling to give money to Discovery. I gladly would have paid Redbull for the race coverage.
  • 2 1
@DylanH93: Why does it matter if it's Discovery or Red bull, both big money making corperations that only exist to milk us (if we are being cynical), Red bull has just done a good marketing job of giving themselves a good image within extreme sports, granted they do give alot back with athlete support and events but only becuase we buy thier drink (not me personally though) but hopfully discovery will give back by bringing more mainstream money into the sport, only time will tell though.

  • 5 0
@excavator666: They could have easily picked a man with zero cycling background as well. Doubt it has anything to do with it. They seem to want a long time professional sports commentator to guide the over arching broadcast that can then be segued to the expert commentators for the individual disciplines. We'll see how it works.
  • 7 8
@jayacheess: nope. There is absolutely zero chance they would have picked another man regardless of experience.
  • 8 0
@excavator666: There are women with more cycling background and commentating experience that they could have tapped for this role, as well. Fundamentally, I don't think it's a bad idea to have at least one woman on the main commentating team when they're covering the sport for both genders.

I suspect they chose her because of something specific about her personality and professional commentating background and how they're planning to use her to interface with the expert commentators. It's not a bad formula, when I think about other sports. Having someone play the layman can give viewers who are new to the sport a person they can relate to, and then the expert commentators will provide explanations through her, to the viewer.

We'll see if it plays out that way. It could very well have been a mistake. But again, if the plan was to get a layman on the team, a man with no cycling background wouldn't have significantly changed the dynamic.
  • 2 0
@me2menow: It's from her Wiki - I forgot the quotations. Sad but true. I hope she's at least a recreational MTBer, but that might be too much to ask for. Doubt I'll see her unless find a decent pirate feed.
  • 5 7
Could have been kate weatherly to tick another box.
  • 6 2
@excavator666: Lol. So you think if they just wanted to tick a box, they wouldn't choose to pay a tenth of her salary to some ex-pro female mountain biker? Make sure an adult controls how you spend money.

They wanted one actual TV presenter on the team, as TV networks tend to do, and she happens to work for them. Obviously she has zero connection to the discipline but that's true about most TV sports commentators in the world. We'll see how she does. I mean you will see, 'cause I'm not paying for Discovery+ or GCN. Plus, the broadcast covers both men's and women's races so I'm not sure what's so strange about having one woman in addition to 3 men on the commentating team tbh.
  • 13 3
Just to be clear, it should be essential to have a woman on the mountain biking commentary team... as long as they have experience in... MOUNTAIN BIKING?

She's a soccer commentator FFS. There are literally memes about this literal dichotomy.

Mountain biking ain't like other sports, where they're so generic that a layperson can bullshit their way through 90 minutes of pansies kicking a ball around a field.

No one can just jump into a role commentating on the most elite level of MTB, with absolutely no experience and expect to do it convincingly.

I suspect CG will have to carry what will be otherwise absolute cringe.

I'm prepared to admit if I'm wrong though.
  • 4 1
@excavator666: I agree. She knows jack about the sport or any of the riders. I'm sure she'll be torture to listen to. How can someone who can not relate to a sport have passion or excitement? It'll be as exciting as commenting on golf - and those guys know golf! Yes, thank god CG will be there.
  • 3 1
@excavator666: I just don't buy your assertion that it's a 'diversity' hire. Their intention looks to have been to find someone with professional sports casting and journalism background first, which means if they found a man to do the job, they might also have had little to no cycling background.
  • 9 2
@excavator666: She's not commentating - she's the presenter. She'll know enough, and rely on the experts.....
And MTB is no different to any other sport, stop trying to make it sound like it is.....

"I am extremely excited, of course. We are going to add new technology into this beautiful sport, drones following races, incredible views, put your seatbelt on because it’s going to be flat-out."

Dear Cedric,
You should have turned your internet on for the last few years, I hope you enjoyed the coverage of the Rotorua Dh at the weekend also which demonstrated that drones, although good, are like watching a gopro, but from even higher up and diminish what is going on whilst making for viewing that shows the riders ass and not what is coming up on track.
New tech would be live connected gopros for a live stream from the riders head.
  • 13 2
Last year I bought $400 in tires, two frames, a complete bike, and $4000 in various components - I still suck at riding. Maybe $50 spent on watching pros will be the ticket to better riding - I'll probably subscribe
  • 12 0
 Weird flex, but okay
  • 9 0
Ric McLaughlin's commentary is mostly dull.

“As well as broadening the reach of the series, Warner Bros. Discovery will revolutionise the way mountain biking is watched by fans across the globe. With over 20 cameras on course, supplemented by three camera drones, the mountain biking viewer experience will be completely transformed at each event – offering fans entirely different angles from each venue and ensuring every major moment is captured in every single race - a first for the sport.”

..Next level hyperbole. They set their own bar through this statement. Now when someone crashes off camera, they aren't living up to this. Perhaps put together a good event first before blasting out statements like this that no one will believe until they see it.
  • 1 0
Has he done live events before or just highlights? If it's the latter, we don't know what he'll be like.
  • 2 0
@BenPea: He did live commentary of the Les Gets World champs last year on GCN/ Eurosport.....
  • 1 2

I think it was there best video yet.
I really enjoyed Rics single person commentary over the 2-person set up with faux excitement that they have had recently. (The main reason I don’t watch WRC)
The camera and drone work is great. Congrats on that amazing drone crash shot!
But I agree they need more camera operators.
The audio was also way better than the last video (no shouting man in this one thank God)
Speaking of god. What does biblically tight mean? (Mr google does not know either)
Thanks for great vid

Do we reckon ESO have scoured the planet for the best potential prospect to replace Rob Warner, whether it be a former co-commentator like Eliot or Tracey, a veteran rider like Wyn or an experienced broadcaster and superfan like Martyn Ashton (who also works for Discovery)?
Or have they just gone for the cheapest, easiest option and given it to their mate?

Just had a look on Eurosport. Paying for just 1 month will get you the first 3 DH rounds. Same in September. Disco+ should work the same.

GCN+ is a pretty good deal at about $50 per year in the USA. At less than $5 per month I have had not problem subscribing and supporting cycling coverage with my $. For less than the cost of the average mtb tire I get to watch a bunch of fat, skinny, and every width between racing.
  • 2 0
Yeah GCN coverage is great. I wish I didn't have to do the VPN thing to watch some of the big races (in the USA anyway) but what can you do... not really GCN's fault there.
  • 6 1
Imho, 2023 will be seen as the year when growth and exposure of XC and DH took a nose dive. Mountain biking as a televised sporting event is dead now. I wouldn't be surprised if brands without a strong european presence will rethink their involvement in racing after this season. I can't recall anything ever becoming more popular after being placed behind a pay wall.
  • 13 6
I might watch part of MTB racing if I am not busy AND it’s free. No way I would pay for it. Look at every other sport.
  • 6 5
"Every other sport"? What strange world do you live in that watching sport is free?
  • 1 0
@macaroni69: not sure what Franks watching, but I pay quite a bit to watch sports all year. NFL games are about the only major sport that have the majority of games available on free broadcast channels. Hockey/NBA/MLB are all on regional sports networks that cost quite a bit on cable or as standalone services.
  • 1 0
Lmao what sports are you watching for free these days??
  • 7 0
curious to see the numbers on how many people will pay to watch them live on gcn+
  • 5 1
I see a lot of hype around the camera angles and drones which I suspect will not be matched in reality. I'll be pleasantly surprised if the level does rise significantly and I think the subscription on an annual basis is not too extreme. That said, they have a lot to live up to and based on the EDR (wtf?!?) coverage which I find quite boring and lacking background content I am dubious the DH and XCO will match RB TV. At least we will have the familiar Bart on XCO and he may even be better without DH Warner as a co-host.
  • 3 1
Realistically I expect some growing pains the first year, but overall I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be able to match/beat RB's camera coverage. Announcer picks don't look too bad but obviously there's only one Rob. McLaughlin seems like an okay pick.

Maybe a hot take but IMO enduro coverage is always going to suck, there's a reason it's still gonna be free. It's just not a good format for viewing and it doesn't make sense to throw a bunch of money trying to get better coverage.
  • 1 0
I like drone footage. Its cool theyre ganna have it but I just dont see how well its going to work given these tracks are usually tight and in the woods. Ganna be severely limited to where they can be used.

  • 1 0
You can chromecast from the CGN mobile app, I've been doing it for road and CX races. Honestly no complaints about the road race coverage. I'm a little dubious about Kate Mason as anchor but I'm keeping an open mind.

The only annoying thing (in the US at least) is that you'll probably still have to do the VPN dance to watch world champs and any road races that NBC carries (TDF, etc), which makes the chromecast thing more difficult. Gotta try to set up a VPN on my router, or just plug the laptop into the TV.
  • 11 3
£40 a year is not a lot. We've been spoilt.
  • 2 1
I agree. In the grand scheme of things especially within cycling, it's actually very cheap!

 > When it comes to the actual coverage of the races the press release states that with the help of Warner

YAY!!!!

> Bros.

Oh.
  • 4 0
The main issue here is having to pay for what will inevitably be an inferior product when compared to the previous coverage. If Discovery had been really serious about making it better, they would have signed Warner, then worked on upping the number of cameras on course and addressing other issues with the Red Bull coverage. It's also worth considering where the additional money provided by Discovery to the UCI will go. You can be pretty sure that the competitors won't be getting a penny of it. Unfortunately, the UCI, like many governing bodies, is fundamentally not fit for purpose, and this is just one example, among many, of their not working for the good of their membership.
  • 3 0
I think cedric is a cool dude so nothing against him. But i really think this is the death of MTB racing. none of my buddies will be paying a subscription to watch the finals. Bad timing to ask money from people to watch a few riders bash down a hill.
  • 7 0
So Kate Mason replaces Rob, and Cedric replaces Claudio/Eliot?
  • 8 1
If Kate Mason can provide the level of insight and excitement that Rob brought to the table, good on her and I will have no issues with her commentating.  @wilsonians: She will have to do a large amount of home work to understand MTB culture which probably includes the highest percentage of viewer/participants of just about any non-ball sport. They want to grow the viewership but I wonder how many non-rider viewers they will snag. If I was into say, football or a die hard F1 or motoGP fan I wonder if I'd even watch MTB if I wasn't actually a rider/participant?
  • 2 0

A lot of us need Rob to make his “whoaaaa” to feel like a real emotionally invested broadcast. Can’t replace that. He is mtb commentary to a lot of us.  “ with Ric McLaughlin completing the team as lead commentator.” Why is nobody reading the full press release? Great news for this man!

I'm sure this won't sway anyone who demands that all coverage be free, but with the way the DH races are clustered in the schedule, you could get a month of GCN+ for the first three races, cancel and then get another month for the next three races after the break. Bonus with this method is that if the coverage sucks you can just stop after the first month.

  • 4 0
Also want to mention that the Final and Semi-Final are going to happen on the same day.

So it's $60 CAD for a full year. Or $11.99 per month. If I wanted to watch the full DH season on a monthly basis (June, August, September, October), it will cost $48. I'd pay this if they can really step up the coverage, but based on what I'm seeing, I'm super super skeptical. Redbull had 20 cameras and drones too... What exactly is ESO/Discovery bringing to the table?

Also, there is no way in hell that I'll sit around all day on a weekend watching DH racing. I'm thinking for this year, I just tune into juniors and semi's (free), and maybe start paying for finals coverage next year if they show they've got the chops.

All this uproar over the cost of a discounted tire
  • 2 0
The free extended highlights on YouTube of the EDR (enduro) last weekend was promising. They followed a similar format to how WRC rally racing is broadcast. There were a few clips of the top riders at each stage and went stage-by-stage to show how the overall was shaping up. They even had some side-by-side clips of two riders through the same sections of track.
There wasn't really much insight or discussion, but it was decently entertaining 25 minute recap of a long race. I'll watch the net race for sure. I'm still undecided on subscribing. If the riders union can work out some deal where some of that money goes to the actual racers, I'd be more inclined to pay up.
  • 2 0
This is like the start of the premier league in the UK (you could only watch it on sky sports) From that day on never paid a sky subscription. You advertise and get revenue. I am a viewer and I watch your adverts so I won't pay for it!
  • 5 1
I am giving £0 to the Generic Cycling Network. I only care about DH racing. Everything else is just a variation on skinny people pedalling around.
  • 2 0
I wonder how the riders feel about all of this. It has to be a little disconcerting with all the changes being made. The new format will completely change the way they have to prepare/strategise for race weekends. It would be nice to see some HONEST feelings from the riders.
  • 1 0
Well, there was that movement and attempt last year as the changes that were made for this year were starting to hit the rumor wire to unionize riders, and loic and others were talking openly about needing more dialogue with UCI- and then UCI made it more expensive and harder to get riders and teams into events - so there are some hints there that UCI and riders are not maybe that happy with one another?
  • 2 0
So just to be clear, if I buy a GCN+ subscription, I can watch all the mountain bike racing in the usa, including the Olympics, without any other tricks like getting a VPN? I can't tell if this is confusing for everyone, or I'm just really dumb. I feel like I'm really dumb....
  • 2 0
Cedric is a funny guy and all but I really don't think he's the right guy for the job. I guess we coulda said the same about Rob in the beginning. I wish him well but we all know that Ced's best stories can not be told on the Discovery channel lolz.
  • 5 0
Ric McLaughlin's intonation drives me nuts, I've got to a point where I listen to the EWC highlights on silent
  • 4 0
Good to see the juniors getting some coverage finally. I find Cedric extremely annoying, and I'd rather have ChatGPT commentate on the race over Ric.
  • 3 1
Well. Guess all the “It was good while it lasted with REDBULL” comments turned out to be true. And the real kick in the arse is being a discovery+ trailforks pro member and still not being able to watch these races. What a load of cr@p!
  • 3 0
So now we need to pay but riders would not see a cent of our money, they need still pay to race. It is a nonsense to me,but time would tell if this is the end of DH races we know now.
  • 1 0
good point, from what I understand alot of $ is paid for the broadcasting rights for a sport. Then the payor solicits advertising. The advertisers (ie SRAM/FOX/Shimano, eyewear, even car companies for example) get marketing, and in turn they sponsor athletes.
This is why free is better in my opinion because it creates massive worldwide viewership and massively more advertising and sales for the advertising companies.
As opposed to only being able to advertise to the core group of subscribers.
Sounds like this will be a decent product for the $ but I don't think this system is best for the sport. The Red Bull model is great for sport, progressing sport, great for athlete and sponsors
  • 2 0
I like the fact that we'll have the XC U23, DH Junior and semi final for free on Youtube, that is a step in the right direction. However I hope they are going to do a better job than EDR Maidena event cause the coverage for that first race of this new era was from not great to god damn awful.
  • 2 0
I stilll have an old issue of Bike Magazine or maybe Dirt Rag that has the cover as “Cerdric The Entertainer”. I doubt he will let us down, he’s a legend himself. It’ll definitely take some getting used to after Rob though.
  • 2 0
$15.99AUD a month (I'm not paying for the annual subscription when the DH only goes for half the year)!! And no Rob Warner!!!

For that price it would definitely want to teach me "which is better?" or "5 tricks only the pro's know".
  • 2 0
So in Canada I need Disco+ is that right? I'll pay for this year and see how we go. If it sucks I wont pay for the whole season.

As a natural dissented to the commonly held views I found Rob's commentary to be repetitive, slightly behind the action a lot of the time and favourable to the people he deemed cool or who he had done one of his "at home" shows with - I only need to hear him tell us how Connor Fearon has the highest cornering speed of any rider once a year but I got to hear it at every race and then be wowed how Connor failed to win anything despite his speed.

I dont need the commentary to enjoy the racing - I need quality footage and some graphics.

 Gcn+ in Canada
  • 2 0
I would like to say a belated thank you to Redbull, not only was it free, but centralized, and easy to find. NBC tried something like what Discovery is doing with Supercross on Peacock, and motocross on another platform, at another pay wall, so you needed at least 2 subscriptions to watch. It failed miserably!!!!!!!! I care less about having to pay for the coverage (we all knew that would probably happen sooner than later), but to say you can watch on Discovery plus, and then later say well you need another subscription to watch all races, over 2,3,4 different platforms is just a recipe for disaster. I hope for the best, we'll see.
  • 2 0
DH and Enduro should leave UCI.

They are not working for the good of the sport, as @Jprestidge said:

"UCI, like many governing bodies, is fundamentally not fit for purpose, and this is just one example, among many, of their not working for the good of their membership."
  • 1 0
Anybody know if there will be on-demand rebroadcasts for those of us North Americans who prefer not to watch live in the middle of the night?

That is truly obnoxious to pull all UCI mtb events under one banner- except World Championships. I would have happily paid to avoid the annual VPN dance.
  • 1 0
Make the sport better by put it behind a Pay wall.......Bullshit......Teams must pay almost the double to participate and there will be less viewers looking to the races. This is not interesting for the Sponsors and will make supporting MTB less interesting so sponsors will leave the sport.
  • 6 0
 Clear as mud
  • 4 0
What about World Champs...is that included or am I going to have to pay extra for that?
  • 1 0
Looks like World Champs weekend is exclusive to Flobikes. So yeah, more money if you want to watch live, as I'm sure races will be available pirated elsewhere afterwards.
  • 2 1
so how does one actually watch these races? They're all on different platforms available differently in every country. Some are free, some aren't. additionally Discovery+ isn't available in all US markets. I live in a fairly large metro area (Charlotte, NC) & as of a few months ago Discovery+ wasn't available to me.

This is the dumbest attempt at coverage that could've been thought up. Wish Redbull never lost it/gave it up.
  • 1 0
They need to do a damn good job of documenting those live semi-finals if they are going to convince me to stump up the pennies to watch the DH final. Will be interesting to see how much the 20+ cameras will actually show of the track...
  • 3 0
Junior riders suddenly become overwhelmingly attractive to sponsors because it'll be the only final people watch. Time to make hay before you become past it at aged 19
  • 2 2
I hope so, cant wait to watch my son on tvSmile
  • 2 0
Nice to know that it's only $4.99/mo (ads) and $6.99 (ads free) to watch on Discovery (half the price of GCN).
The price of one beer at a pub or a mediocre fast food meal, and look at all the $-moaning.
  • 2 1
Cedric's one of those guys who's mostly faded from the limelight (never heard of Kate) and maybe they're fine but why are they not going with prominent fresh riders who've retired but are still contemporaries with today's riders?
Of course - maybe they are & we just don't see or hear of that (?)

Mostly I don't see how Discovery / GCN expect to grow the sport to new audiences when ya still have to subscribe to either...Redbull is free. Even my 75 yr old parents know what the Redbull channel is - not a biggie. Discovery went from an actually interesting channel / service to Clickbait in just a few short years so they're hard to trust or believe...so expecting them to take on WC riding w/o covering it in velveeta cheese is like expecting McDonalds to serve fine foods. And last, does GCN actually cover mtb at all and if ya subscribe is it just 99% roadies (not my jam) or can ya just watch what ya want? Dunno - I have too many subscriptions to even keep it straight any more.

Personally I think Redbull should just host their own world / nations / regional / urban (and Crankworks) bike events and just totally bypass / siphon off everyone from UCI - does it really even matter if its UCI anyway? With Rob (et all) and Redbull's mojo & style, which is far more core than Discovery - it seems they could load the year with DH, enduro, XC, Crankworks & other events and just own biking. But - maybe it doesn't work that way and I realize this is possibly a massive undertaking but even after all the articles & podcasts with Chris Hall - the 2023 season seems to be shrouded in septic aroma instead of excitement.

Fans will be treated to a completely new way of enjoying live broadcasts this season, as the sport ushers in a new era of coverage of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cups in cross-country Olympic, cross-country short track, cross-country marathon and downhill. Warner Bros. Discovery will harness the breadth of its network throughout the year to grow the sport and ensure the widest possible audiences are reached. Live broadcasts of the downhill, cross-country Olympic and cross-country short track elite finals and coverage of all major races from each of the 13 race weekends will be available globally on GCN+*.

If you want to watch that sport you'll love just pay us all the money please!

Good News: Bart will be there. Also good news is there is no more Lauren Smith. She was the worst. She was more interested in creating drama and asked horrible questions. Cracked up that one time she tried to stir up drama with Jenny Rissveds , and Jenny just looked at her like she was an idiot.

Bad News: Obviously no more Rob sucks. Wish they could have figured out how to have him back.
  • 4 0
Can't believe how much I had to scroll before seeing mention of Bart. I'm glad they kept him around. He's definitely been the best in the booth imo.

The amount of commercials will be obscene. Pay to watch commercials. No thanks.

Kate who? What a joke. Cedric is annoying. Ric is ok though.
  • 1 0
Is it just me or is enduro ripe for an old school, audio only live radio show/stream? Get the live updates from the field about what the top riders are up to, who's struggling, who's smashing, mechanicals, how the stages are running and more.
  • 3 0
Bummer. Redbull did (does) a lot for the sport and never charged anyone to enjoy the sport. I doubt I’ll be logging into watch this year and I’m a diehard fan.
  • 1 0
Same here.. This might kill the sport
  • 1 0
 @BeerGuzlinFool: that's probably the idea
  • 2 0
I may just buy a Discovery+ subscription so I can say I was there to watch it all burn to the ground at that first World Cup. What a joke getting a non-mountain biker to be the host. RIP World Cup MTB.
  • 1 0
Drone footage has never really felt like a plus to me. At Rotorua they were so close to the riders it showed nothing and certainly has to be challenging to deal with as a rider. I see how it could be cool, but it's just never been implemented in a way that feels beneficial to the coverage. Will be interesting to see how much more comprehensive the coverage is now, hoping for the best!
  • 2 1
Big fkn mistake........ Sorry Kate you got stitched up..

Rob is DH commentary FULLSTOP, and they should have paid what he asked for...

Fk at least get an experienced racer, im cringing already and I don't really rate Gracia either.. Not even sure if we can watch in Australia?

Rob should do a pirate replay VoiceOver on some copyright don't give a fk file sharing platform.
  • 2 0
Sorry if I’m a bit slow, but is there a way to watch the DH not live? Ie red bull you could just navigate in the app to the race after the event had finished and watch it from there.
  • 1 0
appears so. "live and on demand" for the races
  • 1 0
@owl-X: no way it appears that if you read something properly you can gain a better understanding. Thanks!
  • 1 0
It is like MotoGP or F1. Those shows are sold to other mass media machines in a way it could be attractive to more people. It would be a mix of bad and good ideas/team. First year of paywall Motogp in Spain was a total disaster, bad people in the paddock and guys doing football style tv no one needed. Now is somewhat yellowish related news only what made fans interested in the next race.
I think it is very simple,Discovery/GNC would sell this MTB product to other media to create hype an make new fans pay. So they would made whatever they need to sell more, not what MTB fans wants or even riders.
  • 1 0
What the???? Will somebody just pay bloody Warner what he wants! Sorry but this man can not be replaced! This has been talked up so much from UCI.. in other words it’s gona be that shit! That it will be unwatchable! I think I wana cry!

Why why! Get these pelicans away from me!
  • 1 0
Kate Mason is pretty bad. She was the reason I stopped listening to a podcast as I found her incredibly irritating. If she presents like she did on that show I will not be watching
  • 1 0
The redbull in Brazil had an enthusiastic MTB narrator and last year it was replaced by a soccer narrator. horrible. I can't watch. Lucky there was Rob in the English language. And now????????
  • 2 0
Will the DH finals be scheduled live on Eurosport @edspratt?
Or perhaps any ESO bods monitoring the comments would be kind enough to answer?
  • 2 0
wondering the same for CH since we also get eurosport w/ the basic tv..
  • 2 0
CG could be a good fit and glad to still have Bart on the team for XC. Guess it will all stand or fall with the performance of Kate..
  • 2 0
Can one of the commenters here who is fine with paying for this content please stream + torrent it for those of us who aren't?
  • 1 0
Maybe I missed something? Where do we watch in North America? Discovery? GCN+? , both? Why won’t someone blatantly say “this is where to watch” I’ve had discovery for years and there is 0 mention of MTB ever!!
  • 1 2
The answer you're seeking is literally in the first sentence of the article, and more specifically in the words "globally on GCN+". Last I checked, the USA was a part of the globe, but I don't live in the USA, so who am I to comment. Maybe the USA is not part of the globe??!!??!?!?!
  • 3 0
@handynzl: thanks for being a dick about it. Gotta love the internet. I was confused because this whole last year Pinkbike and everyone else has been saying discovery +.
  • 1 0
@handynzl: they are not, last I checked they believed that they live on a disc
  • 5 4
Lot's of pinkers bitching about paying a few bucks a month to watch MTB. They same pinkers who bitch about how their is not enough money in the sport and riders/racers should earn more money,,,
  • 2 3
Yeah, it's so predictable. What do they want here?
  • 2 0
Anyone that's a Sky Q customer in the UK, you get discovery+ for free, no need to buy a GCN+ sub also, unless you want too, of course.

I’m going to go in early and say this is the most commented article on PB in 2023! It’s possible the first DH race coverage review article, yet to be written, may take the crown!
  • 1 0
No Rob Warner I don't watch. I have no issues spending my money on something else, I have plenty of other hobbies. What a terrible decision.
  • 5 1
 CG!!!!
  • 3 0
ooh Eurosport, that's interesting. I'll set the record button.

Never heard of this Bretnjes guy. But I'm sure glad, they ditched Brentjens, so it can only get better.
  • 2 0
As long as they say "the course is dursty and burmpy" I'm OK with it
  • 2 0
So we get to watch the Juniors DH and the Elite DH Semi Final for free? Better than I thought it would be.
  • 2 1
$50 a year for a ton more coverage seems fine. We will get to watch juniors. I would imagine you will be able to find a bootleg version a day later floating around somewhere.
  • 1 0
 Juniors are free to watch
  • 2 0
Oh well no live elite xc or dh for me this year or for as long as yet another subscription is required.

Oh so only certain content will be on youtube, thats lame especially when your on vacation and dont have a chromecast or can download new apps on an Airbnb smart TV.
  • 2 1
If you're on vacation.. turn the TV off?!
  • 2 0
@blazekelly: When you are at Snowshoe riding the bike park all weekend and the race is on Saturday morning its cool to put the race on before you go ride all day, but thanks for the tip.
  • 1 1
How come I have never heard of most of the commentators before. Cedric might be good but you would think they would bring in some more recognizable faces who have either competed or been around for ages.
  • 2 1
So much debate about paying to watch stuff. Just treat it like every other streaming service. Find a buddy who wants to watch it more badly than you and get their login info.
  • 5 2
Bye UCI et al. Hello Crankworx.
  • 1 1
Can the riders record their own runs? If so then I couldn't care less about this. If they are banned from recording then I can't wait for Red Bull to expand the Hardline series and for the UCI to exit the DH market.
  • 1 0
Will replays be available for all broadcasts (elite finals, semi finals, juniors, etc.)? Will replays cost the same as watching live?
  • 2 0
Oh man! This is going to be as bad as Cam's announcing for the Crankworx series.
  • 2 3
Soo keen for this. More exposure to the sport, more professionalism and more money to up the quality of production. Red bull did an amazing job but, it was always a specific website that people had to use at a specific time. The chances of some one who doesn't know the sport watching the sport was basically non existent
  • 2 0
@Beyond-The-Tape: seriously? you should have a chat with your other brain cell it might let you know that you can go back to 2021 and rewatch all the races they broadcasted and that's just in mtb
  • 1 0
LoL. You realize that having to pay for these races is going to severely limit exposure to new viewers. And steer alot of fans away. I won't be paying for a subscription and I have watched faithfully for the last 10 years.
  • 1 0
@p0rtal00: I was talking about live broadcasts which is what everyone really cares about.
  • 1 0
@BeerGuzlinFool: its on a massive network in Europe that people already use and pay for. Maybe because the new riders will be from outside the sport they won't whine about paying for quality media.
  • 1 0
@Beyond-The-Tape: Let's see how much quality it brings
  • 1 2
 Bart Brentjens for XC! Really?
They took the WORST thing about the REDBULL coverage and kept it. I loved everything about the REDBULL mountain bike coverage except for having Bart and his "root trees" bringing little or no insight except when one of his riders was on the screen.
  • 3 0
Damn they did Rob dirty keeping Bart around.
  • 2 0
So..I am no longer excited for the DH World Cup Races since I can't watch it live anymore.. RIDE SAFE EVERYBODY!!!
  • 2 0
Yeah screw that I just cancelled a bunch of subscriptions. I ain't adding one to watch DH finals.
  • 1 0
Discovery don’t expect a return on your investment no one in there right mind would pay to listen to a bunch of nobodies commentate on something they don’t know about.
  • 2 0
I was hoping Warner Bro's meant Rob and his Brother
  • 4 3
Junior and U23 XC being broadcast is a big step. It would be nice to get the Junior DH to match.
  • 5 0
It is, Junior DH Is live - there is no Junior XC at World Cup level (only at Worlds).
  • 2 1
It is the junior dh. There’s no junior xc , thats what u23 is in xc
  • 2 0
@Starch-Anton: Thanks. My bad. Misread that.
  • 1 0
@bgoldstone: Junior is 17/18 YO, U23 is 19 to 22 YO. They are not equivalent in any discipline.
  • 4 1
 Rob Warner Bros?
  • 6 8
What a shame...money making...being free helps to grow the exposure of the sport. Triathlon do the same by charging and it is such a shame. I too will be switching off snd looking for free stream links. How to destroy the world Cup races in one season.
  • 3 1
After a few races, just looking at results will be normal.
  • 2 1
ok i'll watch mute no problem. thanks for developing the sport. huge step i think
  • 1 0
I just keep things simple. I never used to pay to watch before, with this new setup I will have to pay.
  • 2 0
Feels as though we got Ted Lasso’d
  • 2 0
It really does. Somehow I doubt the same positive outcome.
  • 1 0
@Supergirl56: It is puzzling why the main presenter, as far as we know, does not know anything about cycling?
  • 2 0
I'll watch on hesgoal with Arabic commentary
  • 2 0
Real question will be if the re-play of finals will be free on Youtube.
  • 1 0
Combine broadcast of World Champs and World Cups under one service/fee and I would consider a subscription.
  • 1 1
Before that Whistler Frenchie drove me nuts, it was Cedric. Well, it was fun being a fan of the world cups for a while but I am over it now.
  • 1 1
Quite honestly. No Rob. No interest for me. Nothing against the others it's just that to e Warner's voice IS just a part of WCDH.
  • 1 0
Oh yeah, this will grow the sport for sure, charge people money for a sport they don't know about. I hope I'm proven wrong.
  • 2 0
We're gonna be dissapointed aren't we...
  • 2 0
Perhaps if they were humble before their first broadcast there would be room to be impressed with improvements (if they are made). I feel like now, they've set the bar so high with their press releases about taking the sport next level / things you've never seen before / complete coverage etc etc that it will be impossible to meet their own hyperbole. I also think by running the ASO's mouth like that the subtext is Redbull didn't do an adequate job which many die hards and long time fans disagree with.
  • 1 0
I wonder who has the MTB world champs XCO rights in the US? I see GCN+ has the DH and XCC.
  • 1 0
So which energy drink do I need to go buy a case of, and download their app to watch all this on for free?
  • 2 0
A case of Redbull on Amazon is currently $49.98 without sales tax for a one time purchase, a GCN+ subscription is $49.99 for a year. I guess you would be saving money. I'm not excited to pay for it, but I'm willing to give it a try. I can without a doubt say I've spent $50 on worse things.
  • 1 0
And There it is.... PAY YOUR MONEY to see the Finals ! What a Joke... f*ckin Leeches !
  • 1 0
So do I understand this right, there will be 0 highlights of any races except enduro available on Youtube?
  • 1 0
Will the 1st race be free? To get a look at the product first before you subscribe?

What happens if it works out ok?

Is anyone watching it though an amazon prime discovery subscription?
I can't seem to find it anywhere.

 @Chondog94: please provide examples?
  • 2 1
@Barrywillox: Al Michaels is one example. He has commentated on America's largest networks for football, baseball, basketball, hockey, horse racing, and boxing. Studied journalism etc., never been a professional athlete yet has commentated on some of the most famous games in American sports history. Point is, if you're a fan of sports and have good presence you don't need to be a former athlete. Athletes spend their time performing the sport, not studying broadcasting. There's plenty of other examples, you can find them for yourself.

@Chondog94: to be fair Rob also got stuff wrong quite a bit whilst commentating on XC . . .

@Chondog94: But you’d expect anyone who is involved in commentating to have an interest in the sport they’re covering. Kate Mason, in contrast, has nothing on any of her social media accounts to show that she has ever ridden a bike, let alone being interested in MTB racing.

I have no interest in football, so you wouldn’t expect me to be a commentator on international football matches, yet this is analogous to the situation with Kate.

It doesn’t need to be an ex pro rider; it just needs to be someone who actually knows about the sport and enjoys it.

@Jprestidge: You could be totally right about Kate. But on the contrary, Kate Mason might not run her own Instagram. IG is just another marketing platform and if her brand doesn't involve being on a bicycle, there's no reason for her to promote that on her page. It's not like her IG is a reflection of who she is as a person. She might have a history with cycling that is completely recreational like most people. She might also have a passion for journalism or broadcasting that no one knows about. She might end up being a total failure at this. Who freaking knows.

To clear up my sweeping generalisation of a comment...for me a commentary team dont have to be former athletes but must be emotionally invested in the sport (its what made Warner so epic to listen to) and aside from the passion Cedric & Ric will undoubtedly bring, the others don't appear to have any mountain bike background. They may be super talented TV anchors but I just doubt the passion will be there. I really hope I'm wrong.

I watch all the big road races on GCN and the team do an outstanding job, but all of them live and breath road cycling. I really hope it will be the same for mtb.

Murray Walker is the ultimate example. Never drove a racing car in anger but his passion for F1 made him the voice of the sport forever.

@Chondog94: Don’t think so. She’s posted plenty and d personal stuff on her socials but has never mentioned biking.
