The UCI and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) have announced more details on the plans for this year's World Cup racing with a series of viewing options and the new UCI Mountain Bike World Series brand.

To bring together the World Cup formats of XC, Short Track, Marathon, Downhill, Enduro and E-enduro there is now the new branding of the UCI Mountain Bike World Series. The press release states its alignment plans for the formats will be showcased when all major UCI MTB disciplines will be held at the same time during a ten-day event scheduled for September in Les Gets, Morzine and Châtel.

Also included in today's announcement is the long-awaited reveal of the broadcast location for the events which will be available on discovery+(Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK and Ireland), the Eurosport App and GCN+. The press release does say more ways to watch will be announced at a later date but there is no further information about this or whether there may be a free way to view the racing. Going into specifics about coverage the XC, XCC (Short Track) and Downhill will be shown live while Marathon and Enduro disciplines will only receive highlight shows.

bigquotesThe global popularity of mountain bike is on the rise, and by combining all its major formats as well as racing for Elite and amateur riders in one major series, we will further increase the appeal of this discipline. With its festival atmosphere, mix of racing and expanded live coverage, the UCI Mountain Bike World Series offers a fresh and appealing experience for athletes, hardened fans and newcomers to the mountain bike community. UCI President David Lappartient

bigquotesBy creating a single global platform that unifies the major racing formats with UCI World Cup status for the first time, the new UCI Mountain Bike World Series will also allow for the integration and growth of amateur, pathway and festival events to UCI World Cup racing.

Our long-term goal is to elevate the major racing formats of the UCI World Cup, taking the athletes and teams to a new level. We also want to maintain the ability to entertain and engage mountain bikers at all levels. The future is incredibly exciting and we are honoured to usher in a new era of the sport.

Original UCI Press Release

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) are pleased to announce the new UCI Mountain Bike World Series, which will include the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup for cross-country Olympic (XCO), cross-country short track (XCC), cross-country marathon (XCM), downhill (DHI), enduro (EDR) and E-enduro (E-EDR).

The UCI Mountain Bike World Series will unite all mountain bike’s major formats under a single brand for the first time. The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup will be the pinnacle of this new structure, that will enable all formats to flourish independently but also sit side by side at select rounds and give athletes and teams additional exposure.

The UCI Mountain Bike World Series will also provide opportunities for amateurs and those seeking to break onto the Elite stage. Amateur XCM, EDR and E-EDR racing at some events will enable amateurs to compete alongside their sporting heroes, while providing a clear pathway to the highest level of the sport for aspiring athletes in the quest of qualifying points to progress into the Elite ranks.

This alignment of formats and racing will be perfectly showcased in September in Les Gets, Morzine and Châtel (France), hosts of the first ten-day UCI Mountain Bike World Series festival. Featuring all the major UCI Mountain Bike World Cup formats, as well as amateur racing, the festival will set the benchmark for this new era for the mountain bike.

With one of the world’s biggest sports broadcasters behind the UCI Mountain Bike World Series, there will be more live coverage and more ways to follow racing than ever before. UCI World Cup XCO, XCC and DHI events from the UCI Mountain Bike World Series will be available live and on-demand on discovery+*, the Eurosport App and globally on GCN+. UCI World Cup XCM, EDR and E-EDR will benefit from in-depth Highlights Shows at every round. More ways to watch will be announced in the coming months.

UCI President David Lappartient said: “The global popularity of mountain bike is on the rise, and by combining all its major formats as well as racing for Elite and amateur riders in one major series, we will further increase the appeal of this discipline. With its festival atmosphere, mix of racing and expanded live coverage, the UCI Mountain Bike World Series offers a fresh and appealing experience for athletes, hardened fans and newcomers to the mountain bike community.”

Chris Ball, CEO of ESO Sports, said: “By creating a single global platform that unifies the major racing formats with UCI World Cup status for the first time, the new UCI Mountain Bike World Series will also allow for the integration and growth of amateur, pathway and festival events to UCI World Cup racing.

We also want to maintain the ability to entertain and engage mountain bikers at all levels. The future is incredibly exciting and we are honoured to usher in a new era of the sport.”

* Streaming is available on discovery+ in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK and Ireland.

I would be more likely to pay for Strava than to ever pay to watch televised sports.

Only way this could be a success is if they can figure out a way to have the full downhill runs televised. Chris Ball said this was a priority in his Pinkbike interview, and it was practically his only answer that wasn't downvoted to hell.

"I totally agree and as a priority we're currently looking at how we can broadcast a full race run in DH so we can watch all the action unfold."

m.pinkbike.com/news/ask-me-anything-with-chris-ball.html

Chris Ball has set the expectation and should be held to it if he wants money from us for something we've always had for free.

I can't help but wonder, did EWS and ESO destroy World Cup DH racing for us? It's starting to have that feel.

On the bright sight since none of us can afford the subscription, now we have more time to ride our bikes
  • 23 0
Rising popularity that now appears to have stalled as countries exit the worst of the lockdowns and into higher cost of living meaning that the bike industry is shrinking its expenditure. For many years, mountain biking has been incredibly incestuous in its advertising sales - most team sponsorship is from within the industry (compared to road riding where a lot of the team funding comes from a mix of sugar daddies but more importantly, external to cycling sources). Hide the racing behind a paywall and suddenly you lose access to a significant chunk of diehard fans who do buy product they see on riders jerseys. If that was my marketing spend, I would be looking seriously at those riders who were not behind the paywall - Sam Pilgrim's new contract is a great example.
Discovery will be hoping it can develop a 'Drive to Survive' type product to do for MTB what DtS did for F1 because that is what will push the product in front of new fans and drive up the marketing value which in turn will also provide more income opportunities for the riders. It is a big gamble on their part but expect to see socials start to be filled with mindless gossip bigging up non-existent beef between riders as they pave the way to attract non-MTB fans

  • 5 4
Do you actually think, a niche sport, where even the people really wanting to watch it were regularly put off by that great Redbull player, did indeed attract any casual watchers not into the sport before?

The only casual watcher I ever encountered was my dad, who was mainly annoyed by Rob Warner‘s commentating „Why is that guy shouting all the time, and is it normal that the only thing he tells you are the times you already see on the screen?“

@DoubleCrownAddict: Yep. EWS was the beginning of the end.

Then I'll save my Starbucks money and spend it on GCN+ instead to help advance our sport, for all it's worth ; )

Its a pretty niche sport in grand scheme to expect quality broadcasting (look at comments when RB didnt get it right) for free.

@Whataboutism: You do that by buying the products they advertise. If, and its a big if, their employers might give them some of it. The reality is though why would companies pay athletes more than they have to? Its like any job the market sets the pay rate for the job based on supply and demand
  • 3 2
@bertimusmaximus: No its not. In most sports only the top few make a decent living from it. Heck not even all the drives on the F1 grid get a salary, some have to bring money to the teams for their drive.

Most professional sport doesn’t make for a decent living unless you are in the top 20 or in a very mainstream sport that attracts lots of advertisers from outside of the sport.

THe other reason they dont make much is that they only have to actually race about 8 times a year. Compare that to other sports.
  • 1 1
@nateb: I am simply not interested in anything else I'd could watch with a subscription to any plan.

@vandall: hence why the pay per view option might be nice as well
  • 1 0
On the plus side, the season is so short you might only need to buy 4-5 months of Discovery+. So it's basically less than half price Wink
  • 3 0
@SleepingAwake: but don't all the ads and banners and other sponsoring of these events generate ad revenue for the organisers? Free viewing equals more viewers equals more sponsorship revenue.
  • 4 0
@CM999: correct that a number of the drivers have to deliver sponsorship money as part of their contract, but the old days of a true pay driver have gone as the minimum super licence points came in. Every driver in F1 earned a salary in 2022, even if for some that was a mere $1m (poverty spec drivers). The lowest was Tsunoda on $750k
Even Lance Stroll earned $10m - although technically that should be considered as his allowance from daddy, who, rather than let him be accused of being a talentless pay driver, bought him his very own team to play with

GCN+ costs only 40€ per year... That's less than a set of grips for f*ck's sake!
  • 2 0
@vinay: DH racing has technically been back to using 'lycra' for years now, just not the skin tight stuff. Lycra is just a brand name elastane/spandex fabric.. Elastane is all over tons of WCDH riders kits. The lines on this rule have been blurred for a while.
  • 1 0
 @SleepingAwake: Ah you Swiss
  • 2 0
@gnarnaimo: Yeah I know. As a non-native speaker I thought English people use brand or trade names for products even if they're from other companies. Xerox machine for a photocopier, Velcro for hook-and-loop fasteners, Kevlar for aramid fibres, Sharpie for a marker etc. I used to word lycra as that's what the one used I was responding to.

As for the clothing itself, yes it already gradually got tighter when compared to what it was like a decade ago. Big difference now is that people are required to wear tight fitting and branded as DH/BMX specific clothing. So it is no longer the riders who get to initiate a change and/or express themselves differently like we've seen with Palmer and the like. Only the clothing companies can now do that. It is more uniform.

Riders sign up to contracts they are happy to accept. No one forces them to. If thats the market rate for their value to their employer then that it. I dont buy this whole riders should be paid more. The top riders, like in any sport, make a lot of money. The rest dont

@skiwenric: No offense but the opinion of less the 300 people at best on here means absolutely nothing. All I hear is a bunch of spoiled people with there hand out bitching about paying for something that isn't free. Like I said before if $10 a race scares people away from a sport that they supposedly care about then don't let the door hit you in ass. Nothing but a bunch of entitled spoiled brats complaining about supporting there sport. You know what Disco brings? Outside industry sponsors, remember when MTB was going crazy in the mid to late nineties? It was because giant outside industry corporations got involved and the money starting flowing. We're prime for a 2nd wave, and just maybe the big corporations will stick around this time. Committing to NOT watch will simply destroy all their efforts and any potential for future investments.
  • 2 4
@Mac1987:...and nothing you watch unless it's OTA is free. Don't forget about your internet bill, after all its not free. Unless you're on a government subsidized internet plan.
  • 2 2
The product is the content they produce not the rider. Don't get that confused. When large outside industry gets involved more advertising dollars get spent which in turn leads to the riders getting more exposure for their sponsors in turn making them more valuable and able to earn a higher salary. That's the gist anyway. Fingers crossed they get it right, cause I'd rather be positive about the situation then hope/expect complete failure for my sport.
  • 3 2
@MikeGruhler: none taken, just blows my mind that some won’t even entertain the idea that it may actually improve our sport. Thanks for sharing your insight.
  • 1 1
@skiwenric: I could care less about how this conversation holds up by October. It won't change people's opinions. I'll gladly pay to watch DH, there was a point in time that I could only watch Earthed or Between the Tape in order to watch DH. Q
  • 1 0
@MikeGruhler: ‘the product is the content they produce’… now tell me what the focus of the content is? In any other sport, if the revenue goes up, so does athlete pay, so why should the riders just sit there and accept their prize money won’t increase?
  • 1 1
@iwantstinky: missing the point. Everyone here saying how the riders are the product but that is clearly wrong. Should they be payed more? Probably but who are any of to say what that is. The ROI has to be reasonable for a sponsor to get involved. You know what's the smallest segment of Mtb? DH. As much as I hate saying it they are just racing bicycles at the end of the day and there will always be new riders coming up who will gladly take there spot for the same money or less. Gwin showed how to get the money but most racers probably didn't even ask him for any tips/pointers for negotiating. It's not just about going down the hill the fastest unfortunately.
  • 56 2
What a crock of sh&@!! A sport that could be watched by all for free is now a subscription service plus charging more to teams. Surely they could have used some of the increased team cost to keep the viewing available to all for free as it was.  This is is why supercross and motorcross have taken such a hard hit making people have to pay to watch their seasons and now the same for mountain biking.
  • 37 0
The problem is AMA SX & MX (Now supermotocross, which I do not enjoy saying or typing that word lol) is basically non stop every weekend for 3/5ths of a year. I would rather watch it for free, but 5 bucks a month on peacock is a no brainer in my opinion.

I honestly think the biggest thing holding back popularity of UCI DH is the lack of actual racing. I simply refuse to pay 50 dollars a year to watch like 6 or 7 races total.

flag giantcop (Jan 18, 2023 at 7:22) (Below Threshold)
@nskerb: good point…that’s $6-$8 per race…almost as much as a cup of coffee…have you ever paid for a concert or a hockey, baseball, or football game?
I agree that the corporations making the lions share can suck it, but it’s hardly a prohibitive amount of money to watch something that one enjoys.
  • 17 1
@giantcop: Yeah 50 bucks to watch the whole season isn't crazy money in a vacuum. But in my reality I look at 50 bucks to watch 8 races vs 60 to watch 31 and I'm going to elect to not pay to watch DH anymore.

Watching any sport today is just death by 1,000 cuts. I'll pay to watch SX/MX, MXGP, MotoGP. I have to draw the line somewhere though or it just feels like I'm blowing money I don't need to. The first to get axed is UCI DH, there simply is not enough racing in my opinion. If the circuit was 18-24 races I'd be all over it. And there is absolutely no reason it shouldn't be.
  • 5 0
@nskerb: Outside of the US you have to watch via the Supercross live app. For this season it was close to $225 cdn.
  • 7 2
@nskerb: I would say if the DH season was 18-24 races not a single top level rider would make it through the season. Or, they would have to race a lot more conservatively to significantly minimize injury.
  • 1 0
@endoguru: you could broadcast different levels and do the women's races on different days from the men's ones.
  • 2 1
@endoguru: I kind of agree but kind of don't. You're absolutely right in that they would have to ride more conservatively though. But I think they ride all out only as a result of the lack of races. I've been way more into moto then DH and when I began watching DH back around 2015 I was pretty weirded out by how little people care about the overall championship com[pared to individual race wins (not to mention world champs).

I think the more races per year the more the overall championship gets put into focus, It would certainly shift the culture of what DH is right now. I do not think it would detract from the quality or drama of racing though, but that is a completely subjective opinion.
  • 3 0
I stopped watching supercross when they started making you pay for it. I don't ride dirt bikes but always enjoy watching the racing. A lot of occasional viewers might be like me but for DH, they like watching it but not enough to start paying for it.
  • 2 0
@nismo325: When was SX free to watch?
  • 5 0
@nskerb: I guess I dated myself there. Even though I'm only 35 back with Bubba and Ricky still raced it was always on NBC.
  • 1 0
@nskerb: all good points, and I agree
  • 5 3
@nskerb: Seriously its less then $10 a race. Good luck finding a live pay per view for less then $50 that's worth watching. Drink one less 6 pack the week of a race and you'll break even and be healthier for it. Win Win!

I have to believe they will announce other streaming markets right?....France? Switzerland? US? Canada? Australia/New Zealand? All of Asia? All of South America?
  • 8 1
Nevermind, guess its GCN+ for everyone else. $50/year. Could be worth it if the coverage is spectacular and we get more in the way of enduro coverage. But that is yet to be seen....
  • 11 2
This is probably an unpopular opinion, but if the coverage isn’t completely unwatchable (which does seem like a 50/50 proposition), then $50 a year sounds worth it to me. Still it’s hard to let go of the fact that it used to be free.

My biggest issue is that it seems like they’re missing the whole point of bringing Discovery into the mix to begin with if they’re not getting the sport in front of a massively larger audience by broadcasting it somewhere other than GCN+ in the US. Hopefully there’s more news to come there.

Who knew Chris Ball was such an edge lord.
  • 4 2
@slow-cal: But they are getting the sport in front of a huge number of extra people. How many discovery+ subscriptions do you think they currently sell to non mountain bikers who dont even know RBTV exists, let alone watch it
  • 4 0
@CM999: admittedly I have no idea, but it looks like a pretty limited number of markets that they’re exposing that to via discovery+

My main point is that there’s this tiny little North American market that’s being ignored from a broadcast tv perspective. I mean, shouldn’t they be airing UCI DH right after Duck Dirtbags?? Haha.
  • 3 0
@slow-cal: agreed GCN+ is not the way to grow the sport in North America. FIS and USSA killed ski racing this year by streaming majority of the races on an obscure platform with bad commentators not supported by smartTVs that is anything but cheap. I was hoping that when HBO Max introduced Soccer this past week and said more sports to come, they were hinting at mountain biking.
  • 5 2
If GCN+ is the option for Canada, and it's $50 USD/yr, F-that. No way.
  • 3 4
@mammal: That's less than a set of grips!
  • 3 2
@mrkkbb: Wtf is GCN? I live in the US and have never heard of it.
  • 1 0
@Reno233: a British YouTube channel which evolved into a marketing network.

I don't want to sound chauvinistic, but what bothers me more is the need every single broadcaster has to bring people with English accents to comment on anything they want to pass as "quality" or "knowledgeable". Red Bull kept Cam McCaul and other Americans/Canadians for some of the events. They chose their commentators based on actual knowledge of the field, not fancy voices.
  • 3 0
@Reno233: exactly to the point! How is this going to grow the sport to the masses, if even MTBers haven’t heard of that streaming platform.
  • 1 0
@mrkkbb: You've never watched GMBN?... GCN+ is from the same people... www.youtube.com/@gmbn

If a majority of the money was going to the riders/teams, then I would be more than happy to subscribe. But I guarantee you that it's not. It's just a cash grab for Warner and UCI.
  • 3 1
Nothing new here. Selling the broadcast rights to the previous holder (Redbull) was also a cash grab. And I assure Redbull (the company) wasn't doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. None that is meant to diminish the passion Rob Claudio, Elliot, Hannah, and Bart brought to their contributions.
  • 19 0
This is how old I am: I grew up with my parents, and then my own young family paying for 1 service (cable) that covered all the things. Now we pay for Internet, then on top of that services like Amazon, Netflix, etc. and then some Youtube channels ask for us to pay on top of all that. Then people are like, "it's only one coffee a month." No, it's not one coffee a month. It's one coffee a month from each coffee shop in my town. That adds up to a lot of coffee, or dollars, however you want to see it. If I have to pay more to watch, I'm out. Grumpy rant over, back to work.

It's going to grow the sport and hopefully get the athletes more pay for what they do and make it more professional. I understand why people are pissed off but in fairness they seem like they are investing a lot into it and there will be tons of coverage. I just find all the complaints about cost funny but its one of the most expensive sports in the world to do. Over an annual basis it's really not that much to watch the best in the world do what they do and hopefully the money will go back into the sport.
  • 16 1
It's the principle of it. I might pay if the profits were going to the product, but unfortunately, it is certain the race coverage will be worse, the prize money for riders will not increase, and it is actually costing teams more to register for a race season. Too many people justify these paper cut purchases because they don't cost much but in doing that we now have a thousand paper cuts bleeding us to death.

Get all your friends over on race weekend have a couple of beers can all pitch in. I'm not happy to pay but I will if it means it's better for the sport.

Those little yellow bastards make 150/hr? I don't buy that if they for Disney. Also, $6 is all we have left after bikes and tires
  • 17 3
@domo-kun: How is coverage going to be worse? No Rob Warner, for a start. Perhaps you've never had to suffer through other commentators in broadcast coverage for the World Championships, but for some, we have, and lordy, lordy...want a nap? Warner brought excitement, and I have yet to hear any other commentator commentating on a mountainbike race (XC, XCC, DH, 4X, anything) that came anywhere close to not making it a snooze-fest. Warner mixes with the modern-day racer as he is a legend in his own right, and he is able to convey those anecdotes well in his commentary. If all we get is a person in a broadcast booth remote from the races, then you will never feel like you're there, living it. GMBN Tech has already said that they will be at the races to do behind the scenes stuff, presented mainly by Andrew "Doddy" Dodd...now sure, he has a wealth of technical knowledge, but he is no Rob Warner. Have you seen any GMBN presentations of the EWS? *yawn*
  • 4 6
@JFfullsendsonly: They will discover it because millions of non mountain bikers already have discovery subscriptions and have never even heard of RBTV. They are the target audience as thats where proper non bike company sponsorship comes from.

 Riding > viewing.
And since riding is getting more expensive every day, there's less and less budget and willingness to pay for viewing.
  • 7 2
@domo-kun: How would the coverage NOT be worse without Rob Warner commentating? It will be a new crew that won't know what they are doing, at least for the first few events, minimum. Regarding the paper cuts analogy, I am referring to having to pay for all the other subscription-based products we have these days, from Netflix to Trailforks. Every company wants you to pay continually for products that were at one time a single payment purchase. Now we pay for things in perpetuity. It doesn't take a genius IQ to realize it's not a good deal for the consumer.
  • 1 0
@rip8569: if they improve other parts of their production I can handle someone other than Bobby Dubbs on the mic. I mean, it's mathematically possible...not sure what they'd have to do, but that's why we're paying them the big bucks!

I've always said I'd pay for the Red Bull coverage. I'll pay 50 for this year, no doubt I will. But yeah, if I'm the consumer, then yeah it's not a good deal so far. Thing is, as others have said, I'm most likely not their target. They're trying to get that new viewer, create new fans instead of embracing us. Their money's as green as ours--actually greener, as we've been getting a free ride or whatever else these dollarsign dingdongs say
  • 1 0
That's a quite first world centric comment. You might argue MTB is a first world sport, but there are countless people in what we call the third world who would have to choose between paying Netflix for the whole family to have something to watch, or paying for Disco content. Stop looking at your bellybutton pal.
  • 1 1
@rip8569: The principle of what? Free? GTFO with that kind of statement. As well you have less then zero proof about the quality of the production. In case you never heard the sayings "Nothing good lasts forever" and "Nothing in life is free"
  • 1 1
@rip8569: You know you're not required to pay for any services? Not one time in history has there been a one time fee for video content, ever ! Get some rabbit ear antennas and watch all the FREE content you want. Sounds like you want everything free and without ads, must be frustrating to think that way in the world we live in.
  • 1 0
@MikeGruhler: Where did I say anything about free? My argument is against paying for items in perpetuity, not against paying for items. And what proof do you have that the production will be improved? You're just being a contrarian. At least I provided my reasoning. You're just spouting off about requiring proof while providing none yourself. Must be frustrating living without reading comprehension skills.
  • 1 1
@rip8569: How are you "certain" as you said that the product will be worse? You imply you want it free by talking about paying in perpetuity for a service that has always cost money on a monthly bases.
  • 1 1
@MikeGruhler: I already explained why I believe the coverage will be worse. That's why I am calling your reading comprehension into question. I implied nothing of the sort that I am looking for free stuff. Elsewhere in this comment section I said I would gladly pay the fee if I knew the money was going to the riders but we all know that won't be the case. You're trying to misrepresent my argument to make it easier to attack, maybe you've heard of the strawman argument? You're only attacking my argument with logical fallacies instead of providing any sort of intelligent counterargument. Get stuffed dude.
  • 1 0
@MikeGruhler: Also when did RB TV ever charge a fee? lmao dude just staahp
  • 1 1
@rip8569: Don't forget the internet is not free. As well you say I'm trying to strawman your argument, but all I here is you trying to defend your own statements as fact when there simply your opinion. I believe they will do a good job on the coverage and potentially better then Redbull. (Example: thousands of hrs of successfully programming for 20 plus years).I already pay a service that will have these races, so I will see no difference. I do understand how people might get bent out of shape but they really should be great full they were getting it for "free" for over 10yrs. The entire production was a commercial and as well the riders are not the product the content is and that's a fact. It seems to be the biggest mistake people are making here. Could they ruin DH? Maybe but highly unlikely, I choose to be positive and support my sport. But the UCI could definitely screw our sport...but that's a different conversion all together.

@Murder-One: Do you always get commentary? If I watch after the live event (because time zones and being on the other side of the world) of say a Super Prestige, then there is no commentary, just the loud speakers at the event. It's like GCN+ doesn't save the commentary with the video feed for some ungodly reason. Commentary is there for World Cup events though.

Side note, I wish Wout would come do some MTB races.
  • 1 0

Has it been confirmed that the qualifier events have been cut? I hear lots of people saying this but haven’t been able to find anything from UCI saying this.
They still haven’t released the qualifier calendar so I’m guessing it’s likely true though.
  • 2 0
@Jacobedowney: Are you meaning qualifier enduro races? If so, this is indeed currently true, as confirmed by the Kiwi enduro race that was to be held in Nelson that was to be a qualifier. As for XC / DH, I would think that the status quo remains - you need UCI points from UCI point races (which are few and far between, but do exist). Perhaps enduro will do something similar, so kind of like qualifier races, but just under a different guise.
  • 4 0
@Jacobedowney: Yes, it's true. Eastern States Cup posted the email from Chris Balls / UCI basically telling them to pound sand.

www.uci.org/calendar/mtb/1voMyukVGR4iZMhMlDfRv0?discipline=MTB&raceType=EDR&raceClass=CN

Looks like USA Cycling has not yet finalized a new venue and dates for the 2023 nat champs race. .

Plus there are still the EWS100 races which anyone can enter. and anyone trying to qualify for the world cup can get points at the ews100s
  • 2 0
@DHracerUSA: @DHracerUSA: There are no EWS or EDR events in North or South America in 2023, so no EWS 100, and from what I understand, the only racer receiving points will be the winner of the EWS100 or whatever they will be known as going forward.
  • 8 2
Already what the funny uci is doing doesn't look good. Starting with the weird name EDR - what is it, is it shortening enduro competitions or adding some idiotic points system. Not to mention the lack of competitions in North America....
Now they're lumping it all together. And yet they wish a fee for it with no guarantee that what they are doing is worth anything. For me 7f is 40zl. Any of you here want to pay, say, 40f for it? Same with channels all in one too? I am interested in EWS and that is why I watch these channels. Not interested in xc etc. Sorry but I don't like all this. Pseudo professionals have taken care of this?
  • 4 3
It's not the UCI who have done this; the only thing they're responsible for is selling the rights to Discovery/ESO Sports....
Everything since then is due to the latter; they choose the calendar, venues, name changes, weekend formats, etc

@Starch-Anton: never a truer statement but folks will still blame the UCI

That's one thing. And two. As it was already done it would have been appropriate to inform the people involved in advance of the other - I mean the players and teams. And in the meantime they are put in front of the fact by which we have the effect of disappearing teams - this is my conclusion

This was a lot of words to say very little.

Still, I've come to the horrifying realization that I'm not someone who would pay for an entire Discovery+ subscription just to have access to the live coverage.  As a 55yr old USA dude who can't stand phones, my biggest complaint is that as I type this GCN+ is not available on Roku which is my preferred and one & only streaming device. So either I have to buy an Apple TV or Amazon Fire device, or I need to cast it to my Roku from my laptop or use an HDMI cable. I would do any of them with a smile on my face if I knew the purse for winning an Elite DH event was raised to $15K, but, well, you know who's getting the money...

The Tom Ritchey documentary is very good, so why not other legends of the sport, such as John Tomac or Ned Overend? Behind the scenes with the Scott XC team might turn that Nino character into a likable chap (he has done at least one video with GMBN before). Then there are the events - Trans BC, or Whaka100, or Cape Epic, And that's just scratching the surface. A doco on RockShox, maybe one on Hope? Endless opportunities. Just not another game of BIKE.

I still saw nothing about North America or Canada in this write up. Guess we are shit outta luck? I feel after a year the heads will look at the numbers and realize this isn't gonna make them any money long term. Changing the formula that has work for the last decade isnt gonna bring in heaps of cash. Good luck UCI.
  • 1 0
GCN+ is available in North America...and frankly the entire freakin' planet (with internet coverage)
  • 3 0
@handynzl: I live in remote area. There is no hardwire internet here. It's all satellite internet and we already pay high prices for that. I'm not paying $60/year or $12/month, for an hour or so, of content once a month or once every two months. Like I said, the powers that be, are gonna notice a dramatic drop in viewership and revenue with this decision. Discovery is just trying to cash in on something that they didn't build. This will be the downfall of UCI DH.
  • 1 1
@OlSkoolJake: OK, so edge case, you are. However, it's not just 1-hour of coverage. They are streaming juniors, DH semi-finals, and DH finals. Plus there is the XC and XCC. Then there will be highlight shows of enduro and marathon. And on top of that, GCN+ has a tonne of other cycling content from documentaries to cyclocross racing, road racing, and track racing, and is available to you 365 days a year (shit, now I sound like a shill...hey, I have it, and I quite like it, but then I like watching and riding all forms of bicycles)
  • 3 0
@OlSkoolJake: I have a feeling that Discovery is going to have a rude awakening when the viewership numbers come in and they realize they’re screwed. I could be wrong, time will tell but I’ll be surprised if Discovery is still on-board by 2025 unless they are contractually obligated beyond that.
I’m sure Discovery said “hey there’s a biking boom- let’s get a piece of that!”.... sad trombone sound...
  • 2 0
@gtrguy: I don't think that assessment is wrong. Yes they will have people buy into subs to watch. But the overwhelming majority if diehard MTB fans. Became accustomed to free content by Red Bull. Hard to get people to cough up dough after 12 years of free content. I really feel this is gonna fail miserable once the hard numbers come in. As it should. Can't come in and make sweeping changes to a formula that worked so successful for over a decade. What I see happening is other types of racing events pop up outside of the UCI. Which is ultimately good for the sport as a whole. Red Bull may not be doing g the UCI anymore. But they ain't gonna stop doing events. They know their fan base and what we want.
  • 2 0
While I’m really bummed overall by these developments — RB/Warner getting the boot, Time/Warner coming in & trying to capitalize, a bunch of lame UCI rebranding of the events — I’m actually kind of amazed (& grateful) RedBull was able to keep the free broadcasting going for as long as they did. Must have been pretty expensive, and with a really unclear ROI. Yes, these changes suck big time, but at least in the US these days you have to pay somehow for just about any live sporting coverage.
  • 3 0
I wont pay $50 a year to watch the sport i love.....Mmmm whats that, shiny new carbon whatsit thingamejig advertised on MTB social media of choice - Wow i gotta get that - $400 bargain mate !!!

@ReformedRoadie: Those will be the real money makers with everybody trying to put things behind paywalls
  • 5 1
Cathro, BK plus a few others will be the extent of my watching from now on I think.
  • 4 0
still not confirmed what they will actually be allowed to show as they are not employees of Warner Bros who have the exclusive broadcast rights. BK pointed out at the time of the deal that it appeared his image rights were being sold without consultation (his point being that the Redbull deal allowed riders to generate content but this did not appear to be the case any longer under WB)
As far as I am aware, this has not be definitively resolved, just lots of vague statements from the sell out Chris Ball and his minions
  • 5 1
@Puddings: without Vital raw DH will die
  • 7 1
 They fucked it. I'm out.
  • 1 0
Oh it looks like they got the former EWS website rebranded. And it looks like all the mtb brands that were before associated and promoted on the website haven't jumped on board yet. The only partners listed for now are Shimano, Vittoria and Oakley. They are not really helping themselves right now the goodwill from the DH and XC circus appears to be very limited but even the former EWS now EDR brands show restraint let say. ESO really need to be more forthcoming in their communication
  • 1 0
Its going to be interesting to see the registration list for national DH series and thinks like both IXS and Crank, both this year and particularly next year. Whether riders are contracted to race one series but not allowed to race a rival series etc. E.g Jordan Williams raced UK grass roots series in 2022 at times, will be still be allowed or will that be taken away from riders?
Could Jackson be told he can't race Hardline this year? Kerr the same?
It could be very interesting. Obviously that only affects a certain number of riders. But if you were WB/discover, would you let riders loose at Red bull events? Hmmm
  • 1 0
Riders are not WBD employees, so they can't do that. Road racers code hop and series hop all the time.
  • 1 0
@handynzl: Are you sure? I thought pro licence holders could only take part in UCI sanctioned events. So they can take part in local races organized by or with the local federation but not all commercial races. Didn't someone get a fine or suspension a few years back for taking part in a privately organized mtb race? This is a UCI rule, not the sponsor's.
  • 2 1
@ak-77: Need a race license for National events. If you want to race overseas, you need it endorsed as an international race license. The only real thing the UCI has over anyone is that they wouldn't be able to compete at the World Championships. That is their own event (hence why RedBull couldn't stream that event in some countries). The World Cups, while endorsed and run under UCI sporting rules, are not actual UCI entities; they carry the name due to the rule structure (doping, prize money, race lengths, yadda yadda). The World Cups have always been contracted out, as it were. Thus a rider is free to race anywhere and everywhere. They'll collect UCI points if the race is operating under UCI jurisdiction, but not at, say Crankworx, which is not a UCI sanctioned event. To get UCI points the rider would need to have an international license if it isn't in their home country, and a national license if it is in their home country.

Image rights, however, are another kettle of fish, and this is where the likes of Bernard Kerr may get caught out this year.

Will miss Red Bull tv forever, but psyched it’s on GCN since they do a great job with road and cyclocross. Hope the commentary doesn’t suck without Warner.
  • 2 0
50 a year now, But with profits needed how long before it’s 60 . It would be one thing to pay wc dh wc enduro money. But this money is going straight to the mothership and bypassing the sport.
  • 2 0
I'd be happy to pay more if riders and teams were getting paid more - but with the prize pools staying the same, this doesn't benefit the riders in any way. I won't be paying for it until that changes.
  • 2 1
This is what happens when everyone is shouting about making dh more mainstream, "its the F1 of mountainbiking".
" we need more money in our sport" , "we need more outside sponsors".
Well congrats, you made it onto mainstream tv, oh yes, by the way, you have to pay for it now. Cheers.
  • 1 0
A couple of issues for me - PPV will limit new people coming across and engaging unless there is a way of supporting free trials - Model needs to make riding for a living a viable career for more of the riders. As the sport professionalises, the investment in the core product (the riders) needs to improve in parallel. No issue paying but will be keen to see how ths plays out in the round, not just in terms of what I get to watch....
  • 2 1
I spend about $200 a year subscribing to various motorcycle racing series and consider it some of the best entertainment I buy all year. Honestly, while I love mountain biking, I have a really difficult time getting into any type of MTB racing. I've been trying these past couple of years, but it just wastes too much time. A highlights reel and maybe the top three runs are all I need. I personally think the whole format needs to change. I can't imagine paying for the kind of coverage I've seen thus far.
  • 1 0
I think this will be a mess. I'm not sure I want multiple events on one weekend. It's already overloaded on XC/DH weekends. As for paid coverage... happy to pay for decent streamed coverage but if I have to use a VPN because WBD have sold the rights to an expensive TV station here I will probably just stop watching DH. This isn't about expanding the sport....more about making money.
  • 2 1
I'm not even angry at the idea of having to pay to watch. What I'm angry at is the blatant cash grab by a company who clearly has no interest in growing the sport. Mountain biking is a niche sport anyway, so how are we supposed to grow the sport if we are expecting toddlers to pay to watch. It's appalling. If I knew that the money would be going to the riders who struggle to make a living, then that would soften the blow, but it is clear that won't be happening. And you can count me out of giving money to the morons at GCN.
  • 2 1
Hell yes I'll pay. Watching the elite women and men race is worth every penny. I'd wager many of you complainers have paid to travel to a UCI race or other event to watch the best of the best race/perform. Yes it used to be free and now we have to pay. Coffee used to be .50 a cup and now it's $5. Things change if you don't like it ,don't watch. Now if the riders union comes out and says don't watch because they are getting screwed I won't watch. But if a bunch of PB pundits say don't watch I'm all in.
  • 2 1
From a design standpoint, this new branding is a complete fail. To put it mildly, you'd be lucky to receive a passing grade in any intro to design art class for this garbage.

1. The colors. Red is stop, green is go, right? So endurance doesn't go fast? They're just creeping up hills at 2kph? Is it because red is hard and green is easy? Have they ever seen the heart rate of an enduro or downhill racer at full balls? They're maxed. Have they ever seen a little cross country bike being slung down Val de Sol by Nino or Yolanda? They don't think they're on the absolute edge of that bike's capability? Also Christmas. Don't use red and green together.

2. Arrow direction. Any line going from top right to bottom left is submissive. This is pretty much true across the board in terms of design. You'd have to come up with something far more complex to make that sort of line-direction work in this scenario. Have they never seen a short track race or the last few minutes of the 2022 mens cross country world championships. Those guys didn't seem very submissive. Enduro riders definitely have to climb their bike up before coming down. Down arrow, just like for downhill, makes enduro racers seem like they have no fitness.

Overall huge disconnect and very misleading.

Season hasn't even started, and like most of us said, Warner Bros. is already destroying the perfection that Red Bull built.
  • 1 0
Well, thanks RedBull and Rob Warner for the many years of quality streaming. Guess mountain biking is over now. No way I'm paying for discovery on a good day and in this woke broadcast world I can't see how the biking content will be palatable in any way. Much like the horrific host on F1 TV... At least SkySports has Martin Brundle and on occasion Jensen Button.
  • 2 1
The UCI shall create a global spectacle the like of which has never been seen. Millions will flock to their televisions to see these xtreme stuntz and daring do. Honda starts making bikes again. All is well.

In a podcast, Martin Whiteley did explain that if you paid to stream it, the coverage would be ad free. I presume if it does go on Eurosport or YouTube then you would have to put up with the adverts.
  • 4 0
@Istillneedstabilisers: that was a great podcast. He had much better ideas for the DH, especially for how to run a two race format, than we’ve ended up with. The podcast was recorded before there was any info about the new formats. And turns out most of what he said he was ‘sure they wouldn’t do’ is exactly what they’ve done!
  • 2 0
Eurosport always run over with live snooker or figure skating so you’ll see bugger all even if it’s highlights, gave up years ago on them
  • 2 0
@iidsi: that his predictions were off is alarming in itself. That guy seems completely on the up-and-up, painfully honest, and extremely well-versed on the inner workings of this stuff...they're lying to him too

Cant wait to watch the highlights for free, the DH WC is already something off my watch list for 2023 as we have to pay for it.
Good luck with the new venture Discovery/UCI.

So, Disco+ is about $60. That does not seem that bad but then I looked at what other stuff was bundled in with it and I am out. It is a lot of Bravo garbage and house renovation shows. So, one less reason to watch TV.
  • 2 0
So checked the schedule on GCN+ all races on there for US with exception of the World Champs. Come on, really? Just as with Red Bull in the past. UCI sucks a$$
  • 4 0
Increase team fees. Decreased viewership. Harder for amateurs. Next level.
  • 1 1
7-9 DH races is enough racing for these death defying athletes! How many of you can send it down a mtn with no brakes into the most horrific gnar and be competitive? You guys would be hurt in the 1st minute not using your brakes. Psh

We will find a way to watch for free, that is one thing the human race is good at Smile Even if it is not immediately live, it will be available shortly after via some yet to be determined method.

Looks like Australia gets screwed. Again. Might have to use a VPN, and then have to pay for Discovery+ also. Special thanks to GCN+ for screwing the pooch - FFS

Taking a minority sport behind a paywall is never beneficial to the sport long-term. Who wants to start a breakaway series?
  • 9 9
40 quid a year on GCN+ don’t seem too bad was great watching it for free on Redbull but if they can make it bigger and better then I don’t mind paying
  • 2 4
Plus they have pretty much all the road races (except ASO races like Tour de France), a massive amount of Cyclocross racing, and track, and there is a new documentary every week (which to be fair, are a bit hit and miss, but there are some gems in there - the one on Tom Ritchey is really good)
  • 1 0
Apologies, admit skim read this, but doesn't seem to say anything about how much is going to cost to watch races?
  • 2 0
40€ for your first year with CGN+ (but I cannot find their standard fee after 1 year) or about 60€ for 7 months of discovery+

Well I guess that I'm not going to be watching those live events. I'll watch in on youtube afterwards for free.
  • 1 0
I love you Rob Warner. I’m going to miss that count down on the red bull app on my tv!
  • 1 1
So it’s $12.99 NZD a month and with the 2023 calendar buying 3 months correctly should cover all the DH races. $39 NZD a season I’m okay with that.
  • 1 0
I am not seeing anything about viewing availability in North America I.e. Canada, USA
  • 1 0
Will there still be any ews 100 or 80 this season?
  • 1 0
How’s the rest of the world watch it?
  • 2 0
We'll either need GCN+ or Sky TV. GCN+ definitely has the rights, but might be geo-restricted for NZ as Sky TV has the UCI rights for NZ. This is why we never had the World Champs on RedBull TV, and it was always on Sky with horrendous commentators.
  • 1 0
@handynzl: The GCN+ website has country specific lists on what you can watch, at least for now it seems it's all there for New Zealand too. Went to check this instantly myself, since even though we can get it through Discovery+ in Finland I really rather not pay 10€ a month for their streaming (bunched with other unnecessary reality TV crap), when I could get GCN+ for 40€ a year.
  • 1 0
@handynzl: sky’s nz coverage was so bad…men’s DH wasn’t viewable in retrospect, meaning you had to be up at 4am or nothing. I completely missed the best race of the year coz of it.
  • 2 0
@coney: Yeah. The one race where paying for a VPN was totally worth it!
  • 1 1
If your a sky subscriber the discovery+ is free even with the most basic sky package
  • 1 0
If the coverage is good, I may give it a go.
  • 1 0
In the same boat, I just hope they do course rides, pit interviews and checkups in the tech zones for XCO. GCN+ has a free trial, so just time it right with the first race.
  • 1 0
Impressive! I get to pay for racing now, HELL YA!!!!!!
  • 1 0
I‘ll just watch MoMoi Tv! This is your chance Jack
  • 1 0
Who’s the commentators? Well I hope it is good this year. Hope….
  • 1 0
I’m confused where do I watch it in Canada?
  • 1 0
There’s no news like no news.

That's quite a bit actually. RedBull was free or if you felt like supporting them a can of their drink was less than $3 and at least you got a beverage outta the deal and could replay the event as many times as you liked.
  • 1 2
@pushingbroom: ...or maybe everyone was getting something for free that should have cost money and there unable to be reasonable about getting such high quality content for free in the first place. Give it some time and I'll damn near guarantee the riders pay will increase over the next 5yrs or the economy will continue to collapse and they'll be lucky to make the same as they are now. It's all basic economics and simple math really.
