Tropic Thunder: Finals Photo Epic - Cairns DH World Champs 2017

Oh the madness that is World Champs; it gets us every time. It seemed like a simple enough race as the riders boarded the fleet of 4x4s with their mechanics one last time. As soon as they found themselves alone in the heat of the jungle, mysterious things went down that flip-turned both the rider and the racing on its head; a race so topsy-turvy as to rival the infamous Hafjell 2014.

In a shocking turn of events, following violent crashes from Tahnée Seagrave and the hometown favourite, Tracey Hannah, Miranda Miller became the new female World Champion, the first Canadian since 1990 to take gold. In the end, she would do so by only one-tenth of a second, as in a remarkable mix-up the backup timing system had to be called upon to correct an extremely inaccurate reading for the true silver medalist, Myriam Nicole. After a season of mostly heart-ache, Matt Walker bested the junior men's field, leading out fellow countryman Joe Breedan and Max Hartenstern of Germany, while French youngster, Melanie Chappaz, not satisfied with the World Cup season overall, rode to junior women's gold.

The elite men's race was also loaded up with an overgenerous helping of surprises, and although last year's Cairns winner managed to repeat the performance, there were thrills by the dozen beginning with the first rider down, as Sam Hill careered into the finish area with a time to threaten the best of them. Around 30 riders later the local boy and of course veteran of the WC podium, Mick Hannah, laid down an absolutely red hot bid for the rainbow jersey and at 5.3 seconds up at the time, it appeared an insurmountable challenge to dethrone him. In the end, Loïc Bruni would do it by an absolute wafer; 0.34 seconds and he apologized for it, well aware that no one had wanted it more. That's racing, the time's the time and gold is gold.

Truly an impossible race to call with so many dangerous predators lurking ready to take gold.

What could have been for Tracey Hannah. She rode the track from split one to the bottom almost 10 seconds faster than her nearest competitor even after a truly massive crash. A bronze medal is a great result but Tracey had her sites set only on gold here in Cairns.

The look of confusion after Myriam Nicole s run was not limited to just her face. After the first split claimed she was over 40 seconds down the following two showed her to be right on the pace of Miranda Miller. The only problem was that Pom Pon had not crashed or had a mechanical and by her own recollection had put down a run with minimal mistakes. After a protest to the UCI on behalf of her team it was ruled that the accurate time would put her in second by just one tenth of a second. We s be lying if we said everyone in attendance believes the UCI s side of that story though...

Absolutely gutted for mich and Tracey. Tracey was on a scorcher of a run and she would've won it. Mick was so close too. But still... Miranda and logic! Pretty cool both being on the same team. A good bike race I reckon!

i thought both the men and womens races where really good, i was screaming at my computer during both events. especially at Tracey to just get UP! if she didnt waste time laying on the ground thinking she had lost she would have easily won. pumped to see Miller and SuperBruni win though

@grundletroll: lol you mean on the ground knocked out!

@grundletroll: she said she hit her head and wasn't immediately aware of what had happened. I think that's why it seemed to take her a while to get up.
  • 22 1
@grundletroll: It wasn't that she thought she had lost, it was that she was momentarily knocked out. I was sitting with one of her brothers at the race. To get third after that is shows the pace she had.
  • 37 3
@grundletroll: you do realize she was knocked out cold? She wasn't just laying there. There's some video footage shot from the side that will likely surface in the next few days that shows just how gnarly the whole thing was.

To be honest, I wasn't wholey expecting a medal for Mick. He's an absolutely amazing rider, but hasn't been a true podium threat lately, but clearly he's still got it, so damn close. Hopefully this is a good omen for him, it would be nice to see both he and Bruni need to spend a bit more time on the podium throughout the season. Tracey on the other hand is always a threat for the win, so I kind of expected her to have a run like the one she was putting together. Seems to be the unfortunate theme of her season, so close, but not quite. She was the obvious choice early in the season for the overall, then it just didn't happen and really could have taken gold, and taken it decisively, such a huge bummer. Doubly so after seeing Rachael Atherton's post about the Hannahs being the ones there to help her out when she crashed, Tracey giving up her TT run to walk Rachael back up to the start, Mick helping her back up right after the crash, the karma gods must have been scared of the jungle and stayed home for this race. Gold medals or not the Hannahs are a couple of bad asses.

@shaborider: I used the word "tragedy" on purpose, just to put emphasis on the change of the emotions. This is a common characteristic of Evripides-Sofoklis-Aisxilos' ancient theatrical plots (Tragedies). There is no doubt that Nicole deserved the 2nd place.
  • 20 8
@shaborider: You kidding? Myriam was robbed... I hate to diminish Miranda's accomplishment, but she's been nowhere near Myriam all season. Several places back, 15-20 seconds each race. Even when the commisar was interviewed about the incident he was dodgy at best about the final numbers... They nailed manual timing down to 0.08"?

Miranda ran a great race, but she's not quite in the same league this year.

@mattsavage: I smell a rat here, no chance they got it right

@mattsavage: If you hear Vital MTB interviews, you'll learn that Miriam Nicole had some mistakes on her run, riding with her foot uncliped for a long time and not being able to clear some of the jumps.
  • 5 0
@mattsavage: There are backups that are accurate and I think you missed the part where Myriam went off course and lost a good 8 seconds. If she didn't make a mistake, she would have won no issue, just like previous races. You are diminishing Miranda's accomplishment to a degree seeing as how fit she is after such a string of injuries and thinking she wouldn't have been so close to Mryiam going off course.

Judging by the performances of Miller and Bruni this season compared to yesterday, I can only guess at the size of the bonus for a Worlds win attached to the Spec Gravity team's contracts...

Also Tracey actually knocked herself out?! And then laid down that sort of a run afterwards?!! She is actually insane... Go girl!

CONGRATULATIONS to Loïc, Miranda, Matt and Melanie. Great coverage by the photographers for this article. If only the live video coverage was this good. Is there a global shortage of cameras? What other sport would you find coverage so bad? "..We think the Knicks may have just hit a 3 to level the game...not sure...we'll let your know when the scores come up..". I know Rob and Claudio were commentating from the live feed but this poor coverage of race runs goes on all season! SORT IT OUT PLEASE!!

Such a good race. Absolutely gutted for Mick, but he was gracious in defeat.

Epic race to wrap up the whole season. I always hope Aaron to win the rainbow jersey, but he has to wait till next year. Stoked for Sam Hill's amazing run. And congrats to Loic Bruni. Now he has two golden medals and one world cup trophy. I believe AG would like to trade one or two of his for Loic's golden medal lol.

I have Miranda's used hubs on my bike. I wonder if they are embarrassed to be going so slow now and dream of what could have been.

Hard to go slower than her

 shit she knocked herself out!
  • 3 1
Yeah i was wondering why she was taking time to get up, and now it makes sense. She is really tough, crashing hard like this, getting up and pedaling for a podium finish while she was still a bit KO and shocked is really incredible. I really hope she will get a perfect season next year

"But she goes into the off season healthy and with more confidence than ever." Tahnee looked to be on a great pace with the podium in her sights - being healthy to start the off-season means one less thing to think about for 2018. Congrats to her and Transition Bikes.

That pic of Brosnan at the end...you don't win, you carry your own fork home.

Nice seeing Thomson seatposts on the day's fastest bike...you want problem-free performance and micro-level adjusting, can't do better than Thomson.

How long is brunis fork? i think i heard somewhere here that its 220mm or something like that. i measured it onscreen (with a sewing ruler Big Grin ) that its 9mm wide and 55mm long. If in reality its 35mm wide than its 213.8 long. Am i wrong? i used the picture with just his bike.

Emily finishes a race with a knee cut to the bone in XC. Mirranda gets the gold medal. Candian woman kick ass!

The coverage in this article is great. The timing error, exposed only by a protest, is inexcusable, more shame on UCI, as if it cares. The live coverage glitches are understandable due to Cairns' remoteness.

Have been trying to work myself up to hit Micks drops (first try Friday), but after seeing the worlds best struggle on it, I've got the hibeegeebeez about it again.

Can someone explain why one race in Cairns determines who the "World Champ" is, and the results from all other UCI races are not factored in? Wouldn't the top ranked individual at the end of the season be more representative of a World Champion?
  • 9 0
Because cycling(all forms) has a one day World Championship.
  • 1 0
It's like when you're playing soccer and then someone says "OK, next goal wins!"
  • 1 0
@avcb: Not really the same. A race run is a race run, it's not like they stop and say the fastest person in the last sector gets to be world champion.

Also, pretty much every other individual sport I can think of Running(all types), Swimming, Diving, Gymnastics...etc have a one day world championship.......

I bet Finn is kicking himself for forgetting his goggles... Would have been pretty sweet to have an entire team win Gold at World Championships.

he forgot them in his final training run... Not is race run
