MUST WATCH: Matt Jones in 'Frames of Mind' - Video

Nov 14, 2017
by Red Bull Bike

Today sees the launch of rising freeriding star Matt Jones’ first production entitled Frames of Mind. The film, which uses gripping rotoscoping techniques, shows how Jones visualises tricks and pushes MTB freestyle skills to the very limit, providing a fresh view into how elite athletes use sports psychology to compete at the highest level. Filmed on his own purpose-built trail at Rushmere Country Park, the latest film sees Red Bull’s young gun demonstrate unique tricks including world-firsts in freestyle mountain biking: Bum Slide, 270 Rim Bonk, Hitching Post Flip to Feet, Decade Tsunami, Superman Backflip to tuck no-hander.

Within the film, an advanced editing technique ‘rotoscoping’ was used by Cut Media to enable the audience to see what going through Matt’s head as he prepared for seemingly impossible tricks. This required an intricate process, cutting out countless sequential frames, in order to create the floating ‘traces’ seen in the final production.

As an athlete in a high-risk sport, Matt Jones works closely with top Performance Mentor Gary Grinham to help him maintain a winning mentality in the run-up to competitions and in his comeback after injury. Grinham commented: “The most important thing that you must do is accept the worst possible outcome. You will never perform your best if, while you are competing, you are thinking about getting hurt. Once this is done, it will allow you to perform free and without worry.” Their partnership was the inspiration behind the film. Matt Jones was forced to visualise his tricks with very little physical practice when he broke his wrist following a crash at Crankworx Rotorua, weeks before filming started.

Matt Jones, now 23, has been mountain biking since the age of ten, spending as many hours building jumps as he has riding them. He first emerged onto the British dirt jump scene while still at school, before winning his first international competition in 2016.

Jones commented: “Landing a trick you’ve been building up to is the best feeling. It’s all about visualisation. Once it feels familiar it comes down to getting on my bike and trying it for real. From take-off to landing, you can run through it all in your head before you get in the saddle. I already know the jump work, height limitations, airtime; the entire trick from start to finish. I can figure out so much about a trick just by visualising it; working through the physics in my head and imagining how it feels.”

That was honestly one of the best dirt jump/slopestyle videos I've ever seen. So creative. Insane tricks. Great style. Jumps and features all looking dialed AF. Sick.

Damn good video, and what a playground they built for him!
  • 10 1
The trick at 1:07 should be called "the spinning pope"
  • 9 4
Brandon should be aware of him.....
  • 5 0
@TheR: He built a lot of it himself with some help
  • 3 0
That is a hell of a video!

Hooooow maaaany DJ's??? Smile When you see the Forte's involved with Matt the quality of the building all makes sense.

Awesome, awesome video
  • 10 1
 That awkward high five.
  • 8 2
@chyu: Actualy his tricks are not so difficult considering that in his planet gravity is twice as heavy as the one on earth, and they say we are alone in the universe!!!!!!!!
Massive thumbs up to Stu and of course to Matt.

Cheers

100% agree! One of the best/most creative dirt jump videos I've ever seen. Well done Matt and Red Bull!
  • 5 2
Just came here to say this.
  • 2 0
Legit vid. Like how he took tricks from other sports and applied a biking twist to them.
  • 13 5
Honestly I think semenuk is the most talented rider on earth, but this video tops his recent offerings imo, just purely for having even more creative tricks and bigger tricks as well, filming and editing was tops too, not too overproduced
  • 6 7
@ctd07: Nah, you only think he's the most talented because he's the most recent, most well known rider with insanely good style that premieres new tricks here and there. Depending on your taste, there are more talented riders than him. At slopestyle comps, I agree completely but to say most talented overall is up for heavy debate. There are too many factors and variations to riding and I highly doubt he feels the need to prove anything at this point in time to make it clear if he is or not which is why this vid seems more impressive in certain regards to Brandon's recent edits.
  • 7 2
@scott-townes: no that's not why I think he's most talented, honestly, I think rogatkin is the most talented slopestyle rider, gwin is the most talented dh rider etc etc, I think semenuk is the most talented all round rider and has been for a long time
  • 6 9
@ctd07: Yeah I understand you think he's the most talented all around rider but why? He has only put up good slope results and a couple Rampage results but aside from his personal project, he doesn't have the portfolio close to other riders.

The issue is that you're thinking in a very specific time frame. There have been a lot of other riders who have been insanely impressive in terms of race results, freeride and slope progression, and even some who still kill it in those areas that extend well beyond his career as a well-known rider so longevity as well. Kyle Strait, Gee Atherton, Cedric Gracia, Cam Zink, John Tomac who destroyed BMX racing, road racing, XC and DH all within a short period of time (before freeride but with a record like that... you can only imagine)... the list goes on.

Semenuk is just the new catchy name and for good reason but if you want to better understand the most talented overall riders, you need to expand your scope a bit outside of who just has the coolest edits and best results in certain events of the past 3 years.

I'm certain you missed my point at the end of my last post that he probably doesn't care to prove himself so its impossible to determine this but at the end of day based on what's available, he's not the best all around rider.
  • 6 1
@scott-townes: My perception is not really based on his results, he always does well at events, but its just purely from watching him ride in this instance, I really can't think of many riders who just ooze so much style, fluidity and make everything look so easy on a bike and no other rider does it so well imo, there's been guys like Richie Rude, Chris Akgrigg, Ryan Howard and Aaron Gwin who have put out great videos and show amazing talent but none quite to the all round ability level and with the flair that Semenuk does.

Whatever event he turns up at he is a forced to be reckoned with, honestly I wish he wasn't such an emo sook and would do more events like speed and style, pumptrack etc to unleash his full potential. In no way am I a Semenuk fanboy, I much prefer riders who progress the sport of slopestyle and send it big like Rogatkin and Messere, or even this new Matt Jones kid lol, but I think Semenuk stands at the moment as one of, if not arguably the best all round bike handler on the planet. This comes from the standpoint of someone who has otherwise no interest in Semenuk other than mutual respect.

@ctd07: So your opinion is based solely on his style. Gotcha. BTW I didn't mention any of those riders in your last post..... really, look up the careers of those I mentioned and look beyond your only criteria of style and its not comparable as of now. Semenuk is incredible but there are others who deserve a lot more recognition in terms of "best all around rider of all time".
  • 1 0
@SnowshoeRider4Life: exactly what I was thinking! lol
  • 4 0
@scott-townes: you're referring purely to competition riders though, I don't consider competition to be the only realm where achievements or abilities can be judged
  • 10 0
@scott-townes: "Semenuk is just the new catchy name ... of the past 3 years. " ??? dude it's almost 2018 and Semenuk won rampage in 2008.
  • 1 10
flag scott-townes (Nov 15, 2017 at 7:13) (Below Threshold)
@josip: LOL, time flies... you get the point. Compared to other legendary riders, he's the most recent popular rider
  • 1 1
@ctd07: They have all put out numerous segments and edits in films for quite a while.... aside from Tomac.
  • 6 0
@scott-townes: He is the most recent contender for greatest of all time, yes Big Grin A decade of pretty much dominance in slopestyle, multiple legendary video parts on both dirt and dh/fr bikes(from NWD10 to his own Revel both all around from dh to dirt), massive influence on the slopestyle game (2013 full opo to regular back to back run, and 2014 bringing back the one foot can's and footplants). I mean, the only thing he is missing is some dh results, but does Cedric have any slope results? You can't count him out just because of some NWD 5 nostalgia.
  • 1 3
@josip: He competed in some of the original slope comps at Whistler but not sure about how he did at those. Essentially they both kill it in almost every aspect of the sport and yeah that's my main point that Semenuk really has zero race results to speak... or none that I'm aware of.
  • 2 0
@josip: cedric does have slopestyle results.
  • 2 0
 @scott-townes: who needs race results
  • 2 3
@curranmtb: Read above. You can look fast in edits but race results show you truly are fast which pertains to our discussion. Personally I feel sustained great results mean you are insanely good at riding.

Well done halo and Matt, that was one of the coolest and inspirational vids I have ever seen!
  • 4 5
@halo-wheels so matt puts out one of his silly videos on youtube riding on just his rims and there is no halo call out in the video? seriously missing advertisements haha
  • 5 4
 @adrennan: people that know, know.
Halo have been very supportive of the scene in the east of the UK an UK 4X over the years an have supported Matt, among others. For a long time. Matt an Halo is like Tippie an Rocky Smile
  • 21 1
@nojzilla: only tippie isnt on rocky any more...
  • 4 0
@adrennan: also worth mentioning that Halo have been supporting riders at grass roots level for nearly 20yrs. And it’s not just up and comers, they’ve got Sam Pilgrim and Jordie Lunn and loads of other riders in all disciplines on the team. Genuinely a great brand family who make really, very good products. Most hassle-free wheels I've used
  • 1 1
@Benji-man: all I was trying to do is say in this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKGQAprW2TA that halo missed advertising.

obviously, it makes national news in the UK that he is sponsored by halo, but it is still good advertising time for halo when the bare rim holds up to that abuse.

hey, 53 yr old here and I'm loving this stuff. Rapt I actually cleaned a high speed hop into bermslap (funny hipjump that's sort of not really built) on first attempt on my new bike this morning. Never could get it right on the old 26". Just keep at it I reckon.

One if the coolest videos I have seen to date, Frick in insane riding , that flip to stand or whatever it's called insane and the table slide... amazing !!!

This is next level, THERE ARE ALIENS ON EARTH and matt jones has morphed into a humans body as this is not of this world, its been a very loooooooooooooooong time since a video has got me to watch it more than twice little own over and over in amazment of the riding skills of this kid and the choreography of the video is beyound any descriptive words in my vocabulary. I loved Brendon Semenuk's one shot and all of Danny Macaskill's videos and their imaganation but there is a new kid on the block, I'm thinking this should get them both inspired to ignite their imaganation to the next level, so I thankyou for sharing this masterpiece with all riders and non-riders, simply breathtaking and inspirational.

Best DJ video I’ve ever seen. Originality in this discipline is tough but that was fantastic. The riding and skills were equally as impressive.
  • 3 1
That cork 720 tuck no hander and that back flip to log jump trick was what stood out to me. He could definitely be near the top in next events!!!! That back flip to log jump should be at one of next years events just in a bigger scale! Wink

There are sooo many comments here that I haven't read through yet, so sorry if I double up on what's already been said. That was one of the best edits and some of the best riding I've ever seen in my life. Unreal production and editing, and off-the-charts riding. Kudos to all!!
  • 1 0
Super cool made. But in the text below the video - claiming 'rotoscoping' is an advanced editing technology - is total hyper-nonsense. Rotoscoping is a technology coming from animation movies. E.g. Walt Disneys "Cinderella" was made with this technology. It's patented 1917 to Max Fleischer, by US patent No US1242674 A. And not an advanced editing technique. For real analog drawn (and not computer generated) animation movies, the animation director was drawn each 15th frame or so, to project it's vision, the frames in between have been filled by many other assistant draftsmen and women. De facto, this is exactly shown here in the movie.
