You will notice that the Swoop 170 in the pictures above has the DT Swiss E1700 in it although it should come with the Newmen (Swoop 170 10.0) / E1900 (Swoop 170 8.0) wheelset - that´s because the actual sets weren´t available at the time we needed them. TG - traurige Geschichte...

I hate when companies use degrees instead of radians in geo charts. HTA on the L is 1.14, STA is 1.33.
  • 74 6
 Well, we're on earth..so...
  • 48 1
I and psi, where are the Pascal's?
  • 121 1
Radians aren't any more helpful at all! If they really cared they'd give us rectangular coordinates in the imaginary plane. In this case that comes to:

HTA = 243.85+522.94j

Now we can easily derive axle to crown in our heads along with what size rocks will result in under-damped oscillations.

And why is an American flag user complaining about degrees and not all the metric dimensions??
  • 22 0
@Sardine: Haha well played. You win the nerd medal Smile
  • 16 1
this is great, catch this all you unoriginal water bottle complainers.
  • 7 1
If we're doing this, rides and elevation gain will now also be measured in furlongs just to keep things interesting

flag shaney223 (Nov 2, 2018 at 11:23) (Below Threshold)
Also weight needs to be addressed. Pound and kilo is a mesurement of mass is these companies want to give acurate weights, the newton meter needs to used.
  • 3 2
Yes, I’ll take my bike geometry in Cartesians please! Haha
  • 8 1
@shaney223: Or just the newton, otherwise we're torquing talk and vice versa.
  • 7 1
@shaney223: Newton meter be torque not weight. Edit: Ah BenPea beat me
  • 4 2
@BenPea: yeah kg is mass, Newton and pound are units of force and the Newton meter is a moment, but what if really like to see is the effective geometry you get when you are operating under the recommended sag. That would be a little more interesting.
  • 32 1
Who let the engineers out of their caves.
  • 6 2
@Sardine: I prefer to be called an American, not an American flag user. I'm so mad I'm gonna have to burn so many kilojoules after work.
  • 1 2
@shaney223: Nm Newton meters is a mesurement of forces, acurate weights varies with atmospheric pressue though, but think the Swoop having a fair amount of geometry ajusment is way more interesting anyway?
  • 12 0
@RoboDuck: We've been lurking among you this whole time; you just didn't notice us cause we're terrible at social interaction.
  • 5 0
@RoboDuck: there are no caves on the internet, as it has become abundantly clear. Every last deviant is now out in the open. Even engineers.
  • 1 0
@BenPea: No caves? Many caves/ many internets, nothing as it seems anymore?
  • 8 1
@ZappBrannigan: didn’t notice you guys? How’s that possible, that’s the first part of any engineers comments. “I’m an engineer...”.
  • 1 2
@aljoburr: mmm yeah forgot about those.
  • 4 0
@shaney223: Pound is not a measurement of mass, but the kilogram is. British unit of mass is the slug. BTW, a newton meter is a joul, unit of energy, or alternatively a unit of torque (In English units, we have speak of torque in foot pounds for example).
  • 1 1
@mdrrich: Nm is a mesurment of force not energy as can be used to measure friction ?
  • 3 1
@aljoburr: you are right, but also terribly wrong. Friction is a force. We also know that friction can do work. Work which a force applied over a distance is energy all which have units of joules which is conventional used for energy, but is the same thing as a N*m which is conventionally used for moments/torques
  • 5 1
I hate it when i like a band and then the band gets really popular and everyone then thinks that i like the band because it's really popular but I actually know the truth, which is that i liked the band before it was cool.
  • 3 1
@Sundance: they became popular by becoming shit, so you don't like them anymore anyway
  • 1 2
@MTBKid27: As an American, I would like measurements in this chart converted to US Chain lengths, something we can all relate to.
  • 1 0
@Sundance: Yes That's the thing, Its more cool too be uncool & always will be, because when people realise its cool, its not cool anymore?
  • 1 0
@VwHarman: Yeah, but those are the tip of the iceberg air-raid-siren-like lack of self awareness bad social skill engineers. The rest just don't talk.
  • 2 0
i think you will find that the superior measurement is actually gradians
  • 21 0
#ridefinmetal Just cant beat raw alloy frames, they look so good!
  • 6 0
 raw. looks good, feels better.
  • 1 3
 But there's risk.
  • 13 0
 @chyu: pregnancy?
  • 19 0
Is there any current or planned distribution to the states?
  • 2 0
I’ve thought about using a euro-based bike shipper, but then you’d pay huge VAT (plus import duties for Canada anyway). Wish there were a way around it.
  • 16 1
Hopefully they will still do the 27.5 version
  • 7 1
Agreed. I was looking at this for my next ride, but not as a 29er.
  • 2 1
Seems like that, at least on Radons website are listed both.
  • 2 1
For 2019 there will be no 27.5 option as I read at another mtb website.
  • 1 0
 @carlitouk:
@DaveGFC:
I will gladly get the 29" to forgive my clumsy riding and no need for nimbleness, so my 27" size large may soon be on sale Wink
It's working fine so I didn't plan to replace it anytime soon but the bigger wheel option is making me reconsider!
(Living in France btw)
  • 1 0
 @XIVXV: Haven't you heard? 27.5 is dead!
  • 13 0
Awesome bike and a fair price!
  • 5 2
Spécialités, Yeti and Santa Cruz Take note...
  • 6 0
I think spec/money wise it looks much better then Nukeproof and Vitus. Just waiting now for new Canyon Strive!
  • 9 12
Avoid Canyon Bikes at all costs. You'll get flimflammed!

Is it a 29er?...It doesn't say but it looks it
  • 62 1
 They get overlooked...
  • 2 0
@Travel66: Their site says 29" and it looks like it.
  • 2 0
@Travel66: What's so new about it?

It still has 170mm of travel (front & rear), still has an aluminium frame which has three different geometry-options, has great parts for a wallet-friendly price but now comes with better tires, shorter stem and 29" wheels.
  • 1 1
@pool78: I'm not 100% sure, but I think that part at the end was added later.
  • 7 0
@Offrhodes Really? Then what about tall guys? Let me know when at least 10 bike makers will have at least their most popular model in XXL size as well.
  • 3 1
@pool78: yeah but that's a bit vague, maybe they give you a set of 29er wheels just for buying the bike?
  • 1 2
@AspidMan: A bell curve of the global population would likely show that 5'8 is about average (my height and I ride an S), while 6'5 is freak show material, so it's hardly surprising.
  • 2 3
That long ass chain stay for medium; this is going to be like driving a limo
  • 1 1
@AspidMan: dude youre telling me, i got the 650b one of these in XL and this 29in version would be my dream bike, my current swoop has a 487mm reach and i feel like that is just too short. if they had an xxl version or the xl had a 520mm reach i would be all over this!

i really feel like they knocked it out the park on this bike, geometry and spec and price wise, its just not long enough for tall people
  • 2 1
@Travel66: it literally says its a 29er in the first paragraph
  • 2 0
@tomwhite1401: It was ninja-edited after it was posted. It was not stated it is a 29er when I first saw the article.
  • 2 0
German's already have a test ride reported on it. Sounds pretty good from what they're saying!

www.mtb-news.de/news/2018/10/31/radon-swoop-29-infos-preise-eindruck/amp
  • 6 2
While it probably is a great bike (Germans know how to build a good realistically priced bike), Germans also never seem to give poor reviews to domestic products lately. Motorcycle tests are won by BMW, car tests are won by VW or Audi and bike tests are won by Canyon, Rose or Radon. Sometimes rightfully so, sometimes not.

@Mac1987: as a proud Dutchman you are not impartial
  • 1 0
 @BenPea: I'm sure that's the problem Wink
  • 4 0
Beautiful bike! But why didn’t they go for a metric shock - standart or trunion size???
  • 2 1
And that's after their head engineer Bodo Probst said two years ago he sees no sense in 29er long travel bikes.

No wonder it was equipped with a DT Swiss wheelset cause Newmen is known for their delivery times and not availability of products when you ask for delivery times or prices. Sad story, cause they are really good!

No metric shock? Hell yeah! Thought a bike is unrideable without one! Good to see standard shock lengths ain't dead!
  • 5 0
 Looks like a Hyper
  • 3 3
This may be a good bike, but it's one of the worst press releases I have ever seen. Their selling points are: "the best-specced version comes with good parts" - um, yeah I would assume the best version comes with good parts thanks, "some orange bits here and there" woohoo. Otherwise it's just a list. At minimum a press release should tell me what it's intended use is, and why it does that well.
  • 8 1
Judging by its looks it is a time trial bike that does the job well because of the aerodynamic frame and fast rolling tires...
  • 3 0
Geometry now in the database for comparison purposes...

A devon air shock new tech from rock shox
  • 1 2
Yeah, the frame is designed for 216 * 63 shock, so no modern shocks from SRAM.

  • 4 1
Is everything being changed to a 29er?
  • 1 0
@carlitouk 27.5 version stayes in the production likely
  • 2 1
It's more that most companies already had 27.5 bikes and over the last year they've come out with their 29er fleet.
  • 1 0
 @rezrov: Yeah, it's trendy now.
  • 2 0
Nobody wondering about that "Spax" like looking wood bolt in their FlipChip? XD

Big fail on the TLE...Super Gravity casings are excellent and the only way to go on a bike with that much travel, intended for enduro.

Radon - Will there be a carbon version?
  • 5 1
Why? It's already lighter than most carbon bikes with similar geo and target use.
  • 1 1
 Website says Global Shipping.

Has anyone purchased a Radon in the US?

I like the geometry and this, long chain stays included.
  • 1 0
Says global shipping, but when you add it to your cart it says does not ship to your country(USA)
  • 1 0
Really like the look of these bikes. Great price, spec, decent geo and great weight considering the tyres too.
  • 1 3
Geometry figures from the the tall guy (6'5) standpoint are a bit vague. Yes it has moderate reach of 491mm in size XL, but the Top Tube lenght is only 637mm, so the riders weight when seated will be more front wheel oriented and that's not desirable. For comparison Whyte S-150 has almost the same reach (490), but longer Top Tube (659) and you can definitely feel centered. Deffo 22mm make a difference. Old YT Capra in size XL has TT 626mm so do the math.
So I would not recommend to anyone with similiar height and long legs. My 2c.
  • 1 0
 What size should I get, I'm 5ft 8.
  • 2 1
475mm seat tube height for an XL?! I could fit a 250mm dropper...
  • 5 1
I'd like to see more frames with shorter seat tube lengths and just compensated with longer droppers. Like that you can choose your frame size based on reach rather than seat tube length!
  • 1 0
@tralebuilder: yes but I do need a really high seat to be able to pedal comfortably, so i feel like this trend starts getting too low and eventually I will get problems to find a dropper long enough...
  • 2 1
 Wait - is this a 29er now?
  • 2 1
I bet it rides like a mountain bike.

  • 1 0
No small? I'm short as f*ck, that medium is too big!
  • 1 0
Would you not be better with the 27.5 version then?
  • 1 0
@Vulhelm: I currently ride 27.5 but love the way 29 handles on the trail. I had a 29er hard tail and miss it.
  • 2 2
