PRESS RELEASE: Kellys Bike Company

After 3 years of development by Kellys’ R&D department and cooperation with our European partners, the time has come to introduce all-new Kellys THEOS F-series.

Kellys Theos F is the first full-suspension e-bike in the world made of new generation material called thermoplastic hybrid steel-carbon composite, a.k.a. FEATHER which we use in cooperation with our friends from Belgian technology company Rein4ced. This material combines much stronger thermoplastic binder, carbon fibers and inox steel microfibers which reinforces the material even further. Not only the material is revolutionary, but also the way the frame is built out of it. Thermoplastic hybrid steel-carbon composite frames can be built by robots in a European factory for premium quality and ultimate performance.

Compared to carbon fibre resin composite the all-new thermoplastic hybrid steel-carbon composite is:

• 200% more impact-resistant
• 200% more durable
• Without weight penalty
• Produced by advanced robotic production for even better quality
• Recyclable

Kellys THEOS F series.
Kellys THEOS F series.

Kellys THEOS F series.

The all-new THEOS F comes in two variants: Super-Enduro with 180/170 millimetres of travel and Enduro with reduced travel of 150/140 millimeters. Despite the variant, THEOS F utilises a mullet layout with 29” front, and 27.5+” rear wheel for swift cornering, much better handling and speed. The new chassis is full-composite, which means there are no metallic inserts used to increase the durability even more and reduce weight.

The suspension uses the latest custom-tuned Think Link virtual-pivot suspension platform with asymmetrical damper kinematics to achieve desired geometry while keeping all Think Link benefits such as sensitivity, brake- and drivetrain-independence and no pedal kickback.

RETRACTABLE 720 WH BATTERY

THEOS F comes with a totally new power source. The Kellys Re-Charge K1 Li-ion battery is exclusively co-developed for THEOS F by Kellys-BMZ cooperation.

• The Kellys Re-Charge K1 offers mighty 720Wh and capacity of 20 Ah for outstanding range and performance.
• Thanks to patented internal cooling system and new-generation power cells, the battery has even better capacity-to-weight ratio than before. Now you have much more juice and the bike handling in terrain is exceptional because of low weight.
• On top of that, the new Kellys Re-Charge K1 battery comes with a totally new retractable fixation system. This unique solution allows for retracting the battery by sliding it out of the frame’s downtube with ease while keeping the structure of the frame untouched, avoiding a huge holein the side of the down tube, which would reduce frame rigidity and worsen the bike's behaviour during aggressive riding.

DRIVETRAIN

To complete the picture of the next generation e-bike THEOS F is powered by the latest Shimano drive units.

I don't believe this product is real. Never heard of the company before, and all of their other products are very generic. Too slick of presentation and not enough engineering info to back it up. If it is real, most likely the production model will be a much lower quality than the renders.

@erik2k10: @erik2k10: It's a Czech comapny that is mainly popular on the European market, no wonder you haven't heard about it. But that doesn't make it bad just becasue of that fact.

Why mention the robot bit ? Looks quite a good ebike , no need to feed the ebike haters ! Aren’t all bikes made in factories by robots !
  • 4 0
@h82crash: I don't get why people are downvoting this comment. Yamaha is working on exactly this with the Motobot in Moto GP.
At some point we will see a bicycle manufacturer do the same thing in collaboration with a robotics company, just to prove some sort of tech-related nonsense.

@Matt115lamb: because almost all carbon frames are made in factories my hand maybe?
  • 57 0
@Matt115lamb: Transitions are brought into the world by shamen, Santacruz's used to be grown in silk cocoons but now grow on trees, Yeti's are woven from childrens eyelashes and ground up milk teeth by traffic wardens, Evil's come out of a fiery pit in the middle of the night.

Trek, Giant, and Specialized use robots operated by endangered animals.

Or so I've been lead to believe.
  • 10 0
@Matt115lamb: People think that many products are made by robots when the reality is that very few are. Most bikes are made in big factories, by hand, by people on low wages. Robots are very expensive to buy and configure, people in less wealthy countries are cheap.

As someone who loves low top tubes, I think this bike looks great. Cool production tech too, props!
  • 17 4
Except that the low top tube is negated by the fact that they expect you to put your water bottle on top of it.
  • 26 0
@reindeln: what do you need a water bottle for with all that exercise replacement?

I KID, I KID. I actually came to say this has got to be the best looking eMTB to date! The aesthetics are surprisingly nice although the Foxshox merger is a little confusing and that reservoir is um... I guess its still 2020.
  • 5 0
@reindeln: All fine then, we can cool our

  • 1 0
@greg390: you might be on to something
  • 21 4
@reindeln: Who cares about water bottles anyways, am I the only one here who still rides with a full backpack?
  • 9 0
As someone who loves low tube tops, ...
  • 1 1
I don’t see a top tube. Just a mega seat stay.
  • 5 1
@reindeln: No, you can fit a water bottle. It goes on the top side of the top tube. It is actually quite a neat solution; for those that don't use bottles, the lines and possibly suspension are not compromised, and for those who do use them, the location is ideal.
  • 5 0
Yeah, I think it is the perfect solution. I sometimes feel top tubes are high just because they want room for a bottle inside the front triangle. Which leaves those riding without a bottle with a uselessly high top tube. This way, those riding with a bottle have it as high as it would otherwise be, those riding without bottle can actually enjoy how low it is. Those who apparently cool their balls on the bottle now have a much safer option to do so compared to, say, a Cannondale with room for a bottle below the suspension linkage.
  • 7 0
@mkul7r4: You are not alone, lots of people wearing full packs. Who wants a bike designed around a water bottle anyway, not me.

  • 6 1
Then they came for those with a fixed seatpost, and I didn't care, because I ran a dropper. Then they came for those with a 142mm hub, ...
  • 9 1
If you think technology like this doesn't require a ton of highly skilled, highly paid workers to make it happen you have a very warped idea of manufacturing. There are more engineers involved in this by a mile than there are in a carbon frame. All you are eliminating is the relatively low skill laying in of the carbon cloth part of the process. It will still require most of the same finishing and other processes that happen to a frame once it comes out of the mould.

no comments on chainstay length? and shorter reach starting at 463???? I wonder when this super long bike trend will pass...Im 5'10'' and everytimr I ride my bike I noptice my mistake getting a frame with 460 mm reach. Frown can't imagine ir combined with chainstays about the same length
  • 12 0
"super short chainstay" quoted in the video... checks the numbers... 460mm... is actually friggin long!
  • 1 0
@scar4me: it’s short for an ebike I guess, but they can’t call it “super short” when the Levo SL exists.

@Geochemistry: you might change your tune when you're having to pedal it home because the batteries run out
  • 5 0
@Geochemistry: but it does, ebikes range from 38 to 60lbs
it affects how the bike brakes, accelerate, its character, how playful it is, battery life and how hard you work to carry the weight at all time.
No weight weenie but weight can almost double and that is an insane spectrum.

Arent't revel wheels made of thermoplastic carbon? I guess that's the future because you can cut human from the production and make it cheaper.. to make, not to sell ofc.. Viva la capitalism!

@usedbikestuff: stupid humans. i guess if we remove them all then were would be no more errors.

  • 4 0
@phil-e-b: Ridiculous. I read the comment sections regularly, which I assume are made by humans. Absolutly zero erors their.
  • 4 0
@rrolly: Having working with both automated carbon layup and currently working with hand layup, the machine adds consistency. We've got some seriously talented people doing hand layup but not EVERYONE is that skilled. For better or worse, the machine does significantly more consistent layup regardless of what people are in charge of running or programming it.
  • 5 0
It lists the all new Shimano 2021? Whats the info on that? New steps motor?
  • 5 2
Shimano EP8 Backward compatible with Steps, so in theory if you have a current ebike using an E8000, supposedly you can slap the new motor in. I thought that was cool.
  • 1 1
@Brasher: I’ve heard the same, but that picture makes that theory look impossible. The chainstay length is impossibly short as compared to what is considered normal right now.
  • 4 2
@HurricaneCycles: hmmm my ebike has 439mm chainstays and an E8000.... I've been told by a good source it will work, but wait till 31st of this month when it's released.
  • 1 0
@Brasher: fair enough. I guess we will see!
  • 2 0
It looks really nice, but a little something bugs me. Maybe the rear triangle is a bit too small compared to the front one. Maybe it's emphasized by the smaller rear wheel. And maybe it's emphasized by the shock angle which conveys a bit the feeling that the bike is sagging rather than arching. But it looks nice.
  • 3 0
Never before have I looked at an ebike and thought it looked good. I don't mind it doesn't mean I'll buy it....or be able to afford it.

Is the material that revolutionary? Wasn’t the GT STS rocking thermoplastic back in the day?
  • 1 0
I think they may of even done a Lobo one or an LTS. Hoping this brakes less than those ones
  • 6 1
There are no “new” technologies in the bike industry. Virtually everything is borrowed from other places. We simply don’t have enough money as an industry to spend millions in Researching material science and production techniques. Let’s the auto or aerospace industry do that and then find ways to adapt it for bikes. That’s how we got carbon fiber. And that’s where all the so called “new” tech comes from. someone may be the first to use said tech on a bike, but there’s a solid 99% chance that technology has been around for a very long time. In this case, it’s definitely been around for a very long time in both the industries mentioned above.
  • 3 1
thermoplastic for sure, but without combination of carbon & steel fibers
  • 1 1
@angusprox: yes my friend yes. Gas lines have been made out of the stuff since the 80s. Numerous underwater applications. Auto did pick it up en mass until 2000’s.

  • 1 0
Who else is using the Rein4ced method? In the states we've got two "brand-manufacturer" - GG uses a robot-layed thermoplastic manufacturing method, along with Revel Wheels, but Rein4ced is primarily just a manufacturer for other brands. To make matters even more confusing, they are marketing "FEATHER" as ANOTHER part of their company. Apparently Accel Group (who owns Ghost) claimed it was going to use Rein4ced/Feather to build some of their new frames, but prototype Lector didn't seem to go much further than a proto.
  • 1 0

Everybody hates E-Bikes but I'm going in that direction, 62 years old and trying to no avail to ride like I'm 25. Knee's are wearing out, don't have the same lung capacity as a younger guy, sh! t at 62 I got 1 foot in the grave already. An E-Bike would really help me out, to bad they're so damn expensive, I don't want to wait until I'm in my 70's to get one but at the rate I'm saving up I might have to. Good looking bikes with some cheap specs, frames look solid though, probably won't be sold in the US, never heard of the brand.
  • 2 1
Although I'm mostly against e-bikes except in circumstances where the owner wouldn't be able to /be motivated to ride without the motor assistance

I had a thought the other day that made me change my attitude a bit.. If the tech trickles down to mobility aids like wheel chairs, it would make taking your gran for a walk a lot more interesting..you could basically go anywhere!
It must be tough for outdoorsy old people who are suddenly confined to being wheeled around on tarmac surfaces, so this off road electric tech could be a solution.
  • 1 0
This way of manufacturing is great. Want to bring manufacturing back to the USA, or EU? Then robotics is the only way to do it cost effectively, and I can't wait to see the more new bikes coming out using this way of construction (Gorilla Gravity does more or less the same).

Buying such complicated bike with virtually no customer service from kellys? No thanks
  • 2 0
Does kellys have poor customer service? Bike is a work of art but when i see emtbs with house brand batteries i then wonder how customer service is. Maybe the battery is great but a spare wont be as easily found as a shimano or bosch battery. Hard to fly anywhere with your bike if youre going to have to rent an obscure battery.. Not to mention frame parts(pivots) or possible frame warrantee. Im just not familiar with Kelly but it does look like their engineering team sweats the details.

How feasible is recycling? Is the frame material worth anything of credit when it comes time to upgrade?
Cycling industry needs to get far away from all this single use carbon fiber we trash landfills with.
  • 3 0
Thermopalstics are easier to recycle, as they can be "remelted". Epoxy is a bitch to break up chemically as they polymer chains are crosslinked and has a very narrow temperature window from gel to fast oxydation (you can call it "combustion" if you prefer), so very difficult to separate from the fiber. Epoxy CFRP is usually recycled by chopping it down to flakes that are then used as a filler.
