You’ll be a month late I believe for the World Cup but have fun anyway.
  • 58 0
Everyone show up, have fun, spend money, make other resorts realize there is money and exposure to be had with mountain biking events and we'll see more of these in the future!

 Ha. Oh well. @StLewis:

@rockchomper: Ugh... made me think of Oktoberfest.
Nevertheless, the want paid off. Weird that it's not two years in a row.

Can someone explain to me why the US doesn't have more WC events, or why there couldn't be a couple of events spread out throughout the US. Is it an insurance thing? Immigration? Visa issues?
  • 9 0
@ssteve: Apparently those who are willing to organize an event are not willing to pay, and those who are willing to organize and to pay are/were affraid that they don't get money back during the event because nobody shows up and nobody spends money.

I don't get it because I had the feeling windham had an attendance similar to other WC, but maybe it doesn't really pay off
  • 5 1
@gwhalen3: you'll be a month early. Rest of world list dates as Day/Month/Year

Hell yeah! stop off and visit some family then head on up.
  • 12 0
@Clifflane3: I'm China they list Year month date, which makes the most sense because file names starting with the date automatically list up in chronological order. The American system of month date Year makes the least sense. No offence, just saying.

Trump negotiated the snowshoe deal. Believe me, believe me, it's gonna be HUGE!!!

Just booked an AirBnB. Great price. Book early and save big..

@ssteve: Liability lawyers and cost accountants, mostly.
  • 1 0
@jaame: we use day_month_year for our data management
  • 3 2
@Jimmy0: Coolio. I always found it strange that air tickets use the European standard of date, month 3 letters, year. I mean, Americans invented flying so one would think their way would be used. It must be odd for you guys to read 10 AUG 18, is it?
  • 3 0
People say WC needs to be close to major airport and infrastructure... Snowshoe is not, it is in the middle of freaking nowhere hours away from the closest large airport, but I'm going to try to go.
  • 1 0
@ssteve: A lot of DH in the US is in the Western half of the state and is frequently on National Forest land, which is difficult to get permits for this type of event. The recent US WCs have all been on the East Coast on non-forest service land, where it's easier to build one-off temporary trails for an event.
  • 5 8
@jaame: "Americans invented flying" that's a funny claim
  • 1 3
@zede: It was a loose claim!
  • 1 2
@jaame: i'm just messing with you, i guess you refer to the wright bros but i was picturing a bird reading Pinkbike and saying "wtf?" and I found it funny
  • 1 0
@Jimmy0: is that so you can play fun games watching new, sensible employees curse out your architects?
  • 1 0
@ssteve: I think it has more to do with the resorts that could handle the event are not interested in the cost and hoop jumping required by the uci to put on an event with marginal benefits to them.

Also visas may ba an issue Remy couldn't ride rampage because they said he was going to work not visiting
  • 1 2
@zede: yeah no worries. If you had to attribute flight to one nationality, it would have to be the Wright brothers but I'm sure they didn't conceptualise it for the first time. I heard da Vinci drew the first helicopter, for example. The Americans surely control the IATA and ICAO though, so one would assume they would have set the syntax for air tickets.
  • 1 0
@jaame: didn’t know that about China. And I agree on listing month date year. I keep my watch date, day/month/yr
  • 1 0
@dthomp325: never been to a World Cup in europe have you? Getting in and out of most of the venues is a significant under taking.

There are about a 100 million people within a 10hr drive. If people don’t come the issue isn’t venue location.
  • 1 0
@jaame: if we want to obsess on the details the Mongolfier brothers flew way earlier albeit with air balloons.
  • 1 0
And that time superman went back in time he just used his cape!
  • 1 0
@WhatAboutBob: A 10 hr drive is a very long time. However there is also a great amount of people in a 5-6 hr drive which is more reasonable for a weekend trip. I really doubt Snowshoe is looking to make money off the event, but rather the advertising of having a WC. Puts them right back on the forfront of the DH scene on the east coast. I'm sure they've lost customers to Windrock as well as the NE resorts like Windham and Killington. They're probably hoping to get some of those people back, even if they aren't necessarily going to take their shot at WC course.
  • 1 0
@dthomp325: We have many resorts that have great DH courses, and huge mountains. Those hills in WV can't compare. But you are right outside the lift resorts it is forest service land, and thats a good thing just not for this kinda thing.
  • 1 0
@StevePark: the vast majority of resorts with bike parks in the West are on FS land. The only one I can think of that's not is Big Sky, which does have the terrain.
  • 2 0
@zede: maybe you should google the wright brothers..
  • 1 1

No great venue aside from Whistler which has rejected the idea from what I have heard. Maybe that new DH track coming on Creekside could be a venue in the future without shutting down the whole mountain?

I hear ya! ...But we got the right continent, baby steps!

  • 10 1
@kamsbry: And yes, the new track at Creekside is intended for a WC DH. So looks like Whistler is getting in on it.
  • 13 5
Haha! Some wanker is down voting Mammoth and Vail....or any other North American stop? Sad.
  • 6 0
@shaun-ridefast-michael: As a European I can’t understand why there are so many in Europe and so few in America/Canada. I seem to remember making the same point a year ago too...
  • 17 2
@dirtspanker: What trail would they race? They would have to build a trail, which will never happen, because Vail doesn't like mountain biking anymore, especially DH. The last thing they want is a bunch of stinky downhillers polluting their impeccable fake European village and scaring all the 90 year old tourist away. Keystone would be a much better option. Don't get me wrong I wish it was a different scene in Vail , but they have 0 clue how to build a proper trail.
  • 7 1
 Vail schmail, what @hyroller80 said.

I heard some chatter the last weekend at Deer Valley... new lift will drop you at the top of NCS DH track, which opens the door for more bike park development on that side of the mountain. One of which might be a real deal WC DH track.

DV has the money & motivation, and their focus on mtb has ramped up significantly the last couple years.
  • 5 0
 The Butte or Tohellyouride, CO
  • 7 0
We have EWS in Tahoe next yr.
  • 1 0
@shaun-ridefast-michael: a stones throw away from MSA, or so it seems.
  • 3 1
It comes down to a venue putting together a bid for a race. From talking to some of the folks that organized the Windham events, it's a ton of work for pretty much no money.

To give you an idea of some of the multi-tasking involved, one of the "flower girls" after the DH was one of the main event organizers.

This is a round-about way of saying: If you want a WC race, you can make it happen.
  • 6 0
@kamsbry: Whistler has Crankworx - that would seem like a much bigger bang-for-the-buck for tourism. There are tons of extra visitors coming into town for that, it's the world's biggest MTB party. Events for days (including an EWS race), and exposure out the wazoo. I have a hard time seeing how getting a World Cup would be a serious improvement on that. Whistler has pretty strong game on the summer tourism front anyway - don't think there's a lot of underutilized capacity all summer.
  • 5 2
Womp womp, here we are in the Southern Hemisphere, wishing we had a World Cup race.

12% if the people in the world, 0% of the races....
  • 6 1
@kamsbry: No great venue aside from Whistler? Really? Cypress mountain, Sun Peaks, Panorama, Kicking Horse, Fernie, Big White... And that's just a few resorts that host DH races, I'm sure there is a lot more...

@KiwiXC: I'm a Saffer wishing Stellenbosch got an XCO round again, but if any Southern Hemisphere country deserves a DHI event, it's you guys
  • 2 0
@hyroller80: I agree that Vail won't host a WC trail because they don't want to build a WC level trail that's closed off the rest of the year, but they actually have some really fun trails there. PMT is a fast blue/black DH run, they've added some fairly large jumps on the bottom section, Old Nine Line is an old school steep tech DH course, Magic Forest has some new jumps and a couple of very challenging sections (at least if you're trying to go fast). It's a solid day and you'll feel like a badass ripper amongst all the tourists from Texas.
  • 2 0
@hamncheez: PA is awesome but doesn't have the infrastructure. Stevens has very short runs and no accommodations within 40 miles. Both are my home race spots so no disrespect but not likely to every host a WC level race. Was some hope for Crystal Mountain in the long term but that project in on hold with new ownership.
  • 1 0
@g-42: Exactly. Have heard they have no interest. With a new track at Creekside with a fairly underused second base area maybe this would change. Maybe.
  • 1 0
@theedon: Totally familiar with the area. Those are all fantastic spots. Is Cypress looking to open back up as a bike park? That would be rad. We've been working to get the '98 world cup track back open at Snoqualmie but the bike park project is stalled again. The track is actually still there but needs some work. Interior BC might be a possibility if the infrastructure and money is there. UCI demands a lot of investment and $$ to host a race.

Might get down voted for this, but I like World Champs as second last round, doesn't take away from the WC overall winner.. plus we get to see the stripes on some one new for the last race
  • 25 1
I dont like it TBH. Top riders will hold off on that kamakaze run if they know one more round with points to be had is a week or two after.
  • 7 1
@Boardlife69: Yeah, I get that and world champs at the end of the year is cool for that reason. But I feel that WC overall is the bigger accomplishment and its nice for who ever wins to "get the last word in" instead of going to world champs and their overall win being diminished by someone who wasn't the best rider all year.
  • 12 0
"Get to see the stripes on someone new"

Tell that to Loïc and Rachel :p
  • 3 0
@Boardlife69: I agree, I don't like it. I feel like the WC Circuit and World Champs are kind of 2 distinct events, and having Worlds while the circuit is still going on takes away from that. Worlds is like the big one to end the season where everyone goes all out. Everything else is settled, and there's just one winner take all race where all riders have worry about it that race. That's what makes it special. When you put that before the last (and potentially most important) race of of the WC circuit and it takes on a different vibe. Are racers who are in contention for the overall going to go all out to win Worlds if it means risking the overall?
  • 2 0
@sino428: if the overall is wrapped up a round early, the final is even less climactic. Champs should always be after the cup season ends
  • 1 0
Well yeah, one reason would be if the winner of the stripes doesn't compete in the discipline next season hence wouldn't get to ride in the jersey. Which for in instance is the case if the winner is in her or his last year as a junior.
  • 2 0
@Boardlife69: absolutely right. World champ must be the last

Yes!! I’ve always wanted to go to a wc event and now there’s one 3 hours away
  • 5 1
Funny how are distances are looked at around the World. I had EWS round 50min away and WC 2.5 hours away and most european friends are saying thats too far away...(i had to travel alone after it)
  • 9 2
@kasboh: The US is way more spread out than Eurpoe is.

@kasboh: Dude you need new friends Wink 2.5 hours isn't that much even for European standards.

@dudeism: I know Wink thoug we have trails at a front door so kinda got lazy
  • 2 1
@kasboh: Lenzerheide was about three hours from here. Only problem was getting up super early so we could see a certain young Austrian win her first title
  • 2 0
@kasboh: it’s a 36 hour drive and I’m considering it. May be easier than flying and renting a car.
  • 5 0
 @nuttypoolog: that's nutty
  • 6 1
@kasboh: I'd drive that in a heartbeat. Snowshoe is 8 hours from me, but I'll be there come hell or high water. The people at Snowshoe and surrounding area are beyond friendly. I can't wait to see a WC race.

So much for all that marketing hype by Windham. Would have been nice to at least see Windrock on here. Maybe Windrock or Ktown for 2021-2022?
  • 4 5
 Mammoth!
  • 2 0
I'm not going to pretend I know shit about Tennessee (Ive driven through once), but after some quick research I'm going to guess that Windrock just might not have the infrastructure to host a WC event. Seems like its in the middle of nowhere without much around. Not like a typical ski area like showshoe with base areas, lodging etc. Under the "lodging" link on the Windrock Bike Park site it lists a Hampton Inn 10 miles away.
  • 2 0
@sino428: Knoxville is 25-30 minutes away.

I think I like this new format of having one more DH event AFTER World Champs. Makes the run for overall more interesting and changes the effect World Champs has on riders. Adding another stop, plus adding another in North America, going back to the old quali/start list format......all of it is good news coming out of UCI. Finally!

Going to be an exciting year next year!
  • 6 0
Finally a World Cup in PORTUGAL !
  • 6 2
Can we please pull Leogang from the circuit already? It’s a tired course.
  • 2 0
Is it just me that thinks the venues for world champs are unfair? I mean Val di Sole held it only in 2016 and will be getting again it in 2020, yet venues like fort William have not had a world championship since 2007?
  • 3 1
Could it have to do with the World champs venue needing to host both XC and DH?
  • 1 0
@sino428: Not really. If I was to use fort Bill as an example again, it already has a specific world cup XCO track. Not complaining, Val di Sole is awesome as is MSA, just curious to the logic behind these decisions
  • 1 0
@AD4M: Did Fort William ever bid for a World Champ ? That's the key question.
  • 1 0
@AD4M: I didn’t know if they had an XC track. I just saw that the Recent and upcoming world cups there were only DH stops.
  • 1 0
This could be a challenge for teams. We know there is much less race support at MSA as most team trucks are based in Europe. Those that do have team truck on US often have difficulty getting over boarder. With back to back weekends and alot of racers getting less race support the World Champs and final round could be interesting. Hope companies give racers some great support over the pond.
  • 1 0
If the UCI want to host an event in Les Gets in September, they better speak with the local lift companies! I just got back from Morzine, (next door to Les Gets) and the whole lift network closed on the 2nd September, despite great weather and riding conditions. Locals tell me the the lift companies are privately run and don't give a monkeys about bikes - it's all about snow. Local businesses close up for a month when they could be rocking throughout September. Verbier was still buzzing when we went there.

If they want people to be around for the event, they need to get those lifts open longer.
  • 1 0
I wonder what the snowshoe course will be, just got back from my last trip of the season. They have some gnarly trails I doubt they would run lower hareball I think it's just too gnarly for a world cup style race. Possibly a mix of the pro DH course and new stuff any guesses or snowshoe employees wanna chime in haha. Snowshoe is my favorite place and I think it has plenty as far as infrastructure goes lodging and food and everything is plentiful.
  • 2 0
They will absolutely race Lower Hareball!! The gnarly stuff underneath the lift will be awesome for spectators.
  • 1 0
@SK3728: lower harball is super rocky, but is it steep enough for a WC race?
  • 6 2
Some Southern Hemisphere rounds would be good
  • 3 2
 “The Northern Hemisphere Cup”
  • 3 2
Would be good as Aus, NZ, SA & Brazil have all hosted events (WC & World Champs) that could easily host them again, but it's the UCI. It's all about the $'s...
  • 2 0
Hope Sam Hill is reading this article... He might just come back to DH! And dont say that Fort Bill is not suited for him, he won there twice!

I already booked my airBnb for Mount Saint Ann. The landlord was asking, "Sure you don't mean 2018"? Nope!

 Mont-Sainte-Anne
  • 3 0
This is the last year I put these into my calendar! Who has a link to a proper iCal? PB Message me please!
  • 1 0
Oh yeah... Just reserved a condo. Let's hope for a competitive season so the title comes down to the last race. Having the final round after World Champs could definitely add some excitement. Can't wait!
  • 2 0
So no Whistler Creekside DH until 2021? Would Mont-Sainte-Anne have to give up their spot or would we see 2 in Canada and 1 in the US?
  • 1 4
 What's wrong with you?
  • 1 0
Track isn't completed yet in Whistler (not sure if they've started, probably keeping it quiet)... they will need to have test events to prove it out before putting in a bid I would think (Crankworx DH, BC/Canada Cup with UCI Elite class etc.)
  • 1 0
@gramboh: Croatia didn't have any try out events.

Parabens, Lousanpark, Portugal, and way to go, Snowshoe!
  • 3 0
Scott Casey, please don't schedule a NW cup during WV world cup please.
  • 3 5
Guess next years vacation will be to Vermont. Never been to east coast looking forward to it. We need to have a huge turnout if we want to see more WC races in the US. The Europeans show up, we need to show where Mountain Biking started. SHOW UP AND BE LOUD.
  • 10 0
If you are talking about snowshoe that is in West Virginia not Vermont. I agree though if the turnout is huge it might make other North American venues put in bids to hold a World Cup.
  • 1 0
Mt saint anne and hill said he wants to get a dh bike for the shed ????????????
  • 1 0
Stupid thing didn’t mean to do ?

  • 3 2
Sad isn’t it. But at least we’re not Americans who are pretty much ignored!

@mh731: Deal was 3x WC and 1x World Champs but that doesn't mean there won't be a WC after this years World Championships or what deal does Fort William have? 25 World Cups? ;0)

Little sad that there won't be a DH WC in 2020 in Switzerland anymore but what's more sad is that there are very few DH races left in Switzerland, only Bellwald, Wiriehorn, Schönried and Homberg, that's it, even the MX guys have it easier to race in Switzerland

Damn it, I wanted the US stop to be Angel Fire.

That would be awesome as the terrain could make for a great race (and it's only 3 hours away for me), but I don't think it had the infrastructure for a WC DH event.

@pcmxa: Angel Fire had a DH World Cup back in 2005 - Greg Minnaar pipped Graves for the win by something like 0.2 of a second. Was the same year that Jared wrapped up both the Norba 4X and DH titles (when Norba was a big deal), he was an absolute machine that season.

@brownies: I've ridden the world cup teach more than a couple times, though I don't know what it is like now compared to then. They would need to make it more technical or else use one of the other tracks like Chilln or Supreme or Upper Boogie if they were going to host a WC today

Do you happen to know what the relative size of events were then? Looking at crowd sizes of this year's events and the size of the pits and trying to envision where they would all fit.

Angelfire is a pretty tiny village and even Taos, 40 minutes away is small. Given its isolation, not sure it could attract the crowds to make it worthwhile for them to do again.

Les Gets in 2019 and.... Les Gets in 2020... Whaaaaaaa... UCI is very imaginative in its choices!

Why no XCO in the UK? Are separate venues for different disciplines a no-no?

Where is Whistler and 1199? I really hope it is on the roster in 2022

It’s gone...that finish on the flats through the street belonged in a Red Bull one off event, not a UCI downhill stop.

Not with what has been happening there. Nightmarish stuff. 20,000 murders in 2018 so far, that is more dangerous than any active warzone right now

Ridiculous. Of all the places in the USA to go, that's where they'll be? No wonder there's then no USA on the 2020 schedule.
