Tahnee Seagrave Breaks Tibia and Fibula After Crashing on Dirt Jumps

Feb 15, 2020
by Ed Spratt
Unfortunately it was a short day for Tahnee Seagrave on the hill she had a big crash and injured her shoulder. All we can do is wish her a speed recovery whilst we eagerly await news on the severity of the injury.

Tahnee Seagrave announced on social media today that she has been involved in a serious crash that resulted in a dislocated ankle, broken tibia and fibula and ligament tears. At the moment she is expecting to be out for around three months although at this early stage nothing is 100% certain.

Seagrave told Pinkbike; "I was out with all my mates just having a fun dirt jump session after a heavy week of training. Landed one slightly off and simply put my foot out... Not much info at the moment as waiting for the swelling to go down so we can operate. It’s a pretty big injury having dislocated my ankle and breaking my Tib and fib. I see the surgeon on Monday for more scans to check the state of my ligaments which at the moment we are guessing have a full rupture..."

bigquotesNo words could ever describe how I feel right now... Dislocated ankle, broken Tib & Fib, ligament tears & all the rest... It’s part of the game and sometimes you get dealt with some pretty shitty cards. Sometimes more than once or twice...But good players don’t need good cards. Tahnee Seagrave - Instagram

We're wishing Tahnee all the best with her recovery and hope to see her back on the bike soon.

Gutted - was hoping Tahnee would get the over all this year. Looks a nasty injury - relocation sucks, had it done twice on my thumbs.

@Maxipedia: It's a fair comment. These people are professionals. If she's still being paid when sitting on the sidelines I'm sure her sponsors will be somewhat pissed off.

I'm not suggesting they should live like monks in the off-season, however if Downhill racing is your profession and your priority, you should exercise restraint and limit risk in other forms of sport when leading up to season open.
  • 85 49
@Zitch: You are right! Riders should do everything in the benefit of their sponsors, even in their sleep, because everybody (and their endurocat) knows that sponsors' happiness is ALL that matters in the world! Sponsored athletes should wrap themselves in pillows and bubble wrap and only stay indoors in rooms with gum walls. Whatever you do, just don't upset the sponsors! Humans? Pain? Joy? Sacrifice? Smiles? These don't matter, it's The Sponsors, maaan!

Kaos, Kade - lose those silly colors IMMEDIATELY I say and go please the sponsors! Be more serious, what is this?!!!

 @WAKIdesigns: nail, head
  • 28 3
@Zitch: Yeah, there is no real offseason for riders of this calibre. They can't switch off their abilities and just coast around waiting for the season to begin. Sponsors of extreme athletes are fully aware of the possibility of season or career ending injuries. If this happened during a race, the sponsors are still "out", so let's not exercise what we think is our common sense here and realize that extreme athletes are always susceptible to extreme injuries.

@endurocat: Too bad Tahnee didn't have you there to mansplain this. Really, would you have made the same comment if this had happened to a male rider?
  • 36 14
Yeah, downhill racers should not do dirt jumps because it's too risky...
And professional football players shouldn't be running and boxers shouldn't do any sparring, got it. Sounds absolutely logical to me!
BTW, you guys better don't go into the kitchen, after all most accidents happen there and what would your employers say if they hear you we're prepping food when you lost your finger?! They'd be furious at such a blatant display of irresponsibility!

@endurocat: I don't understand why you're getting downvoted that much mate. Sure she should have fun in her life and on her bike, but she's a pro athlete. Her 2020 season was about to kick in, and only few weeks prior a main event she's in hospital. And people wonder why some pros in other disciplines can't do what activities they want.
Yet, it's during training that a legionnaire suffers. She will come back stronger and will learn her lesson.

@endurocat: Riding is inherently risky and therefore you shouldn’t ride due to the risk of injury that could effect your ability to do your job and harm your employer. If your logic works for sponsored riders it should transfer over to you or anyone that an injury would effect your ability to do your job even temporarily. Or just shut up and realize stuff happens and it wasn’t any more irresponsible than you out for a ride at half her pace.

@WAKIdesigns: we dont know the story, but there is a VERY fine line between training and screwing around.

Travis Pastrana is a perfect example, up and coming moto prodigy, was out free riding with buddies and crashed which more or less ended his racing career. They called it the million dollar jump, it's how much it ended up costing him since his contract got cancelled.

The current moto guys are not allowed to publically freeride or have video.spots, contractually. They also have very robust insurance plans, which dont pay if your out free riding and get hurt. Non of the top guys freeride like they used too, it's on a track practicing or racing.

I hope she has a speedy recovery, human to human. But none of know what sort of contract she had but I see both sides of the issue....

@jemscott: I don’t care who you are, what your joints are, if you took this as an attack on yourself because you can’t go out and jump it’s your own problem. In general you seem to be old enough to understand that being intimidated is the problem of the person getting intimidated, zi did not intend to intimidate you, but you obviously felt so because you have some greater idea of yourself. I just came back from jumping took too many cases due to face wind and my piriformis is f*cked, I have nerve pain all the way to the big toe if that makes you feel any better. I just meant that there is not a single female rider on the WC podium and male that qualifies to a world cup who cannot jump well. You can’t be fast through rock gardens if you can’t boost stuff, do even basic whips and tabletops. You can’t. It just doesn’t happen. Jumping is incredibly important skill. But some twats, clueless a*sholes here think Tahnee was taking an unnecessary risk by dirt jumping. It was to them, not to you. You accuse me of being egoistic yet you obviously got your mojo hurt because you feel embarrassed about your jumping. Give me a break mate, don’t play mr nice guy who was mistreated.  @RadBartTaylor: simple question: do you actually jump?

Because if I was a Team manager of a DH Team and my employee wouldn’t be able to dirt jump I’d do my best to send them dirt jumping. If riding partners included Veronique Sandler and Kade Edwards, I could not be happier.

Also, we don’t know what is in her contract but I am not the one insinuating that a hurt athlete reading this not only got hurt out of own recklessness doing something unrelated to her job.

So no, it’s not that arbitrary. I am on the right side mate, it is mot me who is potentially an a*shole here.

Yes I am triggered much. This is Pinkbike it used to be gravity riding related site. Bashing someone for doing Dirt Jumping is simply breaking the rules.

@WAKIdesigns: My missus, a former top DH racer from the 90's, retired from DH healthy, 2001 season just decided "this will be my last season, at 29 yrs old, not worth the risk or the pressure for me anymore" granted, she was one of the high paid women of the 90's, and the bottom fell out of racing-so this has always gone on is my point. The sport has evolved, more spread out, at least DH isn't the only game in town for a brand, its 'one of'.
Anyway, that being said, the sport of DH is a better place with Tahnee in it, this is a friggin bummer-but, this will make the middle/end of season as awesome as last year with her return.

AAARRRGGGHHH! Heal up Tahnee. Come back at 100%. I am 5 months post op patellar tendon rupture repair. I just started PT. Weak AF. Follow your doctors and PT's prescription to the T. You will crush the competition in 2021.

Broken my Fib and Dislocated my foot beginning of August. Last month was my first 1000 meter ascent day. Definitely sore during rides but pretty manageable. She's got some tough times ahead of her but with the right team and hard work she will be back at it sooner than later. Heal up Tahnee!
  • 4 0
Broke the top of my tib last August and same as you, just getting back to riding now. It's a long recovery for sure.

@jclnv: "The fact that every training I do is complimentary to Downhill makes me so happy! Proper bmx track is so good training for us." Loic Bruni

You should get in touch with Loic and tell him he's doing it all wrong. I'm sure he'd appreciate advice from an expert.

Come back stronger, we all know you will !!!
  • 8 0
Noooooooo so sorry to hear this, I hope Tahnee heals as fast a possible and recovery is smooth.

This could have happened taking a misstep and falling down stairs. Freak accidents happen. Dirt Jumping is training.

 That Sucks, Stay Strong Tahnee

Don't let 2020 be like 2019 with so many top female racers out due to injury. Stay healthy Ladies!
  • 3 0
Sounds like a pretty serious injury. Just coming back from a bad injury I wonder if this might be the end of her being at the top of the game. Dealt cards are cards, but sometimes riders need to think about the next 60 years of their life and any latent effects when they are older.
  • 2 0
Damn, I was literally contemplating getting a dirt jump bike and this happens... Get well soon Tahnee, it sucks seeing quality riders get injured before the season even begins. Especially in the womens field where the depth isn't as large as the mens
  • 10 0
 Buy the damn bike! Wink
  • 8 0
@gregspeakie - you have a choice, learn to jump properly or kind of make it through speed jumps in the bike park only to be taken out by a stupid shitty jump because you decided to really send it this time. I thought I could jump before I started dirt jumping... and I still feel I am average at it. Sometimes we are so bad at something we don’t realize how bad we are. Most people who even clear big jumps in bike parks still can’t jump. They compensate bad technique with additional speed and think that body armor will take care of hits - which can have only bad results. The better the jumper the less speed he/ she needs to clear the jump and/or more air time they make from speed surplus. Only Dirt jumper or BMX can teach you that, not even an aggro long travel HT
  • 2 0
@WAKIdesigns: BMX or rigid DJ is a great platform to learn dirt jumping. I have friends that have never put a leg over a rigid bike, have been on full suspension for YEARS and I cringe Everytime they leave the ground. LOL
  • 7 0
This is precisely why people feel so butthurt about all the above: they have no damn clue about jumping and instead of improving this, they prefer to bitch about it and those who do it. Just for the record: I am sub-mediocre jumper myself, but I know this and look up to those who actually can jump.
  • 9 3
@ATV25: I think BMX is at least 2 levels deeper, even if you mount dirt tires to a race BMX which has longer wheelbase and is evidently less agile than a true dirt BMX. I have such race BMX but I must say I didn't dare to use it on our local jumps. I don't know how can someone learn to jump on FS to the level where they exit a lip by following it's curvature without blowing through it (I still do it a bit!). There's just no way to learn it without the rather direct feedback from the bike, the pressure that the lip (preferably a steep one) builds up. I remember first time hitting Rollercoaster in Hafjell (kind of A-line/Dirt Merchant) after spending 8 months on dirt jumps. Already before I hit the first lip I was like: pffff that's easy and I started overjumping everything because I rode at same speed I used to ride before. The problem became how to ride that thing without using brakes. And I am still far from being in full control. But then I started riding the DH track... needless to say I was gapping half of stuff I used to ride over. Vast majority of people ride like I rode before, they have no clue about timing push off the lip, they push too early and hunch before the front leaves the lip so they bounce off of it, loosing speed, getting out of balance. And a long travel full susser on speed jumps allows us to keep riding this way. To a point. It's like lifting heavier and heavier weights in the gym with poor technique, at some point your disc will pop. You are all fine until you aren't. And then instead of polishing the technique they just say "this is not for me, I don't have balls for it". No you don't have technique because your environment, trails you ride, people you ride with pose no pressure on you to learn. It's just everytime we ride and come upon a feature it's a wierd flight or the classic "some other day". When we come to a good DJ site, and there are only steep jumps, then there's no going around the fact that we suck, everyone there can see it, and the only way to deal with it is either learn in a smart way, ask people how did they get to thois level, or just ride away thinking that "mnah, I am better at other things" - but are you? How can you be? If you can't boost terrain features, take air mid turn and land, place tires down at a different angle than when you left the ground, how can you dream of becoming better. I do not know a single fast rider in town who does not jump well, not to mention World freaking Cup DH

I just started riding bmx and loving what its doing for my mind and riding

@What an awesomely sensible and honest post. I’m rubbish at jumping but I’m learning and isn’t that one of the beautiful things about this sport.Theres always something to get better at,to practice and learn about.
  • 4 0
@hvmatt: study BMX racers, they are masters of jumping. Study their squash and boosting technique.Try to achieve extension of the whole body like they do when they boost things. Resist the will to hunch at the end of the lip.

Give Michael Bias a follow, he's technique is asbolutely beautiful and he posts a lot of good videos showing different techniques.

@WAKIdesigns: To be fair, the points you mentioned are exactly why I was looking to get a dirt jumper. I have a lot of confidence riding gnarly downhills and have good fitness for enduros, but whenever I leave the ground it goes to crap very quickly. Im definitely going to pick up a DJ next paycheck

@gregspeakie: look at that video with Thomas Vanderham “this is home” from today. Just look how much he is in the air and how much of little Things he does when he flies even for a split second. He always puts a bike at an angle pulls wheels a bit sideways. Of you go fast enough things have to happen in the air and air time starts when both wheels are still on the ground. Cheers! Happy flights! Join the movement hahha Smile

Really bad luck.. it seems to be how the worst injuries happen. I had an a very similar injury 10 years ago. Broken rib/fib, disclosed ankle and tore out the tendons in my ankle. 4 months in a (roboboot) , 6 months rehab and never properly healed due to so much scar tissue. All I can say is be patient on the healing process because you may have a long road. Shtty injury...
  • 6 0
That reset footage is so nuts! Hoping for a solid speedy recovery!!!
  • 6 4
Had a similar ankle break in 2003 (dislocated/shattered talus)....it’ll get better but it won’t ever be the same.
  • 4 0
Poor Tahnee! I know the feeling about having some random crash on some random dirt jumps. They bite pretty hard sometimes. Healing vibes to you!!!
  • 3 0
Best wishes for your healing Tahnee!! Ankle/foot injuries are no joke, but with your positive attitude and focus I know you'll be back! Sending well wishes from one foot/tib-fib smasher to another.
  • 3 0
Flipping savage injury and what a blow for her. 2020 was looking mint. She was so solid i her training and getting quick
Poor love

Heel up well Tahnée
  • 3 1
She’s gonna be our way longer than 3 months.. I’m in the same boat as her right now.. pilon fracture shit is no joke.. hope she has a good recovery, cause it won’t be fast ..
  • 1 0
Did you read that it is in fact a pilon fracture? Hope not. I did mine about 2 years ago, came up just short on a road gap. Bad pilon, countless fractures, needed cadever bone to try to put the joint back together. It sucks, bad. as you know its unlikely you will ever be the same. I can do some big rides, but I stay close to the ground and always have to hold back a bit. Arthritis already setting in, pretty mangled talus cartilage, cant quite get a clear image of the tib fib because all the hardware.
  • 2 0
Bummer. Here's to a speedy recovery. I'm by no means a pro but I feel that air awareness is super important and hit my local jump lines at least two days week with my kid . Smash jumps , lots of them .
  • 1 0
Hope its not a pilon fracture, break at the articular surface of the tib/fib. I had one about 2 years ago. Pretty much game over if so. Most never walk normally again, let alone compete at the top level of a sport. I can actually ride better than I can walk, but I am not the rider I was pre pilon.
  • 2 0
She's a great racer, and even nicer person. This is a risky sport and accidents are a part of the sport. I just hope she heals up soon. Sending her healing vibes. Lets all stop the negativity.
  • 1 0
@endurocat: Really? 99% of us ride/race bikes for "fun", 1% are fortunate(?) enough to make money riding/racing. I'm no pro, but if I were and I lost the desire to just go out and ride w/ friends just to ride and have fun it would be time to rethink the above priorities.
Poor timing and a bad break (semi pun intended) Tahnee, hope you heal both quickly and properly.
  • 1 0
Gutted for her! All those arguing over it being irresponsible for her to be dirt-jumping at this point in the season and letting down her sponsors - Ever stopped to think it could be pressure from sponsors to be posting on insta etc. as the reason why she was out dirt-jumping in the first place?

personally I think she needs to be out there getting max bike time to catch up from her shoulder injury.
  • 1 0
So nobody knows what Tahnee's agreement is with Canyon and her other sponsors regarding training, skills improvement, riding, media (basically everything relating to the agreement) yet they still find it appropriate to offer advice, criticism and general negativity after she has suffered a horrendous injury? Some special people in here.
  • 3 0
That's terrible. I was so looking forward to watching Tahnee kill it on the race circuit this year. She's one of my favorite riders. Best wishes on your recovery!
  • 3 0
You girls are making easier and easier for Valentina Holl to dominate the World Cup season. Hope you have a healthy and speedy recovery
  • 2 0
Such a bummer to hear! I broke my tibia, fibula, and tallus, along with a full dislocation. 2 surgeries and 3 years later, I still feel some pain from it. Hope she heals back to 100%
  • 3 0
Dislocation requiring surgery shattered tali’s and fractured navicular. I’m 3 years post injury and still limping.... Mine looked like Pompoms injury before last season. She’s looking strong I’m sure Tahnee will bounce back too!
  • 3 0
@scotttherider: Ya, it's rough. I broke mine in 9 places they could count, and a few hairlines. I wasn't walking for around 5 months, off the bike 14 months. Still have a limp, and can't run worth a shit 3ish years later.
  • 2 0
@jeffhall124: damned I was only crutch bound for 3.5 months. Was back on a bike in 10 months luckily. Would be fun to have a gimp off....lol does yours affect your riding much now? Mine only bugs me in hard g-out situations.
  • 2 0
@scotttherider: Not really while riding. If I have a hard impact I get a little dead leg feeling for a minute. hike a bike up steep stuff to get somewhere makes it stiff for sure.
  • 1 0
@jeffhall124: I loved riding in the rain....shitty weather=stiff ankle....I hear ya on the hike a bikes too.

One of the few women who sent it on massive jumps at Snowshoe last year. Shel be back better and hungrier than before. Fighter athlete to the end.
  • 1 0
Gutted for her, as a spectator I want to see a full field of riders all battling it out on track, pushing each other. What I like about Mountain Biking is the camaraderie, between riders, teams & fans, unlike some other sports.
Hope she is back sooner rather than later.
  • 3 0
Ah no!! Such an amazing rider to watch race, hope all goes well and heal soon.

Daaaaaang. That is terrible. Heal up. We look forward to you crushing it in the World Cup this year.9

Horrible injury!! Good god... hopefully no lasting damage after the very long recovery Frown
  • 1 0
That doesn't sound like a 3 month recovery. Only comparison I can think of is [NBA star] Gordon Hayward, and that was over a year.
  • 1 0
Basketball is crazy on the ankle and a lower leg though, no point putting him out there at 50%, it also took him about a year of playing to get to a level even close to before his injury

This sucks so bad... was looking forward to a season starter with all the ladies in full war mode... ohh Tahneee... why???!!!

Usually, pro athletes like NHL players have contract terms forbidding them from doing things like skiing or riding bikes while the season is on.
This isn’t really a good comparison to what happened to Tahnee, as NHL players practice pretty much everything but hard body checking, but they do go hard outside of games, but specifically to the game.
She was riding her bike, so I’d say that wouldn’t be like a possible term of her contract that might keep her from skiing.
