Spotted: Scott Prototype Carbon DH Bike - Crankworx Rotorua 2019

Mar 20, 2019
by Daniel Sapp
We first got a good look at Scott's new prototype DH bike in aluminium last year at the Losinj World Cup. Today, we get the first glimpse of it in carbon.

photo

We were able to get a few photos as Brendan Fairclough was wheeling it away but no details nor a full bike check were in the cards yet as it was made clear the bike is not ready to be released. This is likely a final stage and very near production prototype. Another detail worth noting is that Fairclough is on ENVE's M9 wheels.

photo
It appears that the wheelbase will be adjustable. Perhaps for variations in tracks and perhaps to accommodate both 27.5" and 29" wheels. The wheels on the bike were 29".

SCOTT Proto
Everything is smoothed and refined from the earlier model we saw. It looks like the adjustable geometry carries through but in a little different way.

Stay tuned for more details when we get them.

LOOKS LIKE A MOTHER FUCKING SESSION!!!!
  • 50 5
Yep, it's been said way too many times, but justified here.
  • 29 7
I always laugh when seeing "like a session comments". But this time it's not just "like a session". It is a f*ckin session!
  • 17 12
I'm not from around these parts, what are all these 'session' comments?

I'll show my self out.
  • 6 2
 @goroncy: no APB...
  • 34 5
Awesome! A new plastic bike that looks exactly like another plastic bike. This industry is winning so hard.
  • 26 0
I guess they didn't want to GAMBLE on an untested design....
  • 15 6
@goroncy: Just to refresh your memory and everyone else's memory, the Session's rear pivot is at the axle, not on the chainstay.
  • 10 1
 looks like an Aurum
  • 3 4
@pdxkid: That's what I was thinking reading it all. It's actually FSR knock off. Axle above and behind the chain stay pivot 4 bar, which is one of the best designs still.
  • 2 0
 @nojzilla: or floating rear shock
  • 3 0
@s8wood : Correct! but the session is a good looking / working bike so im cool with this!
  • 5 1
 Looks aren't everything.
However, anytime a brand creates something truly unique- the market eschews it. I-drive AOS, Lefty, Trust, Naild, etc. Sometimes brands just give up and give in (GT) and unsurprisingly the masses accept and embrace a practically universal design.
  • 3 0
@b1k35c13nt15t: I wouldn't say designing your bike like a session is giving up and giving in. That design is tried a true and Scott/GT are very rider driven companies so I'm sure great riders decided this is the platform they found to work best. Even if it does look like a session

 Ahahahahaha
  • 2 1
Click bate at its finest, you guys released the team video showing the new bike and riders back in Jan we forget but we don't forget that fast!
  • 2 0
@mbiker35: Horst link isn’t an “FSR Knockoff” spez just chased the patent from about 93-98, and held the patent from 98-2014, which was only valid in the US. Bikes from other countries could still use it, but could only be sold in the states with an agreed and paid for FSR branding and spez patent number on the frame. Rocky Mountain got around that by moving the pivot slight above the rear axle. Many other brands have now had access to the design since about 2013/14.
  • 1 1
@NYShred: looks way bettet than the old dumpster gambler they should have called it the dumpstler
  • 1 0
@mountainyj: TRUE, they are all Horst based designed with different placements of pivots, things like that so they can call them their own. I just owned a specialize and 2 iron horse 4 bar bike, so I just refer to ones I know.
Now I own a couple Giants with their ripped off DW-link copy cat.. which is another really good set up.
They all work well I might add.
There will always be suspension wars, People mostly defend what THEY own, because they cost a boat load of money, and we adapt to what ride until it feels just right... THEN WE LOVE

Come on guys these Enve jokes are getting old. Let's crack on as normal. Just like those wheels. OH SNAP.
  • 4 1
Interesting it looks like only Brendan is on Enve, the rest of the team have Mavic wheels, guess it's similar to how he has troy lee kit and the rest have Scott kit.
  • 41 1
I think we should all give Enve a break
  • 67 0
the enve jokes are older than most of the enve rims
  • 8 2
@K1maxX: yeah at least 2-3 weeks now since PA nuked Hiroshima.

 @K1maxX: clever....

 @Crossmaxx:
Username checks out
  • 3 0
Wait- Brendan isn't breaking these wheels every run? Surely he must ride harder and faster than PA?
  • 6 0
 @brappjuice: @paulaston for Rampage!
  • 1 1
@harrybrottman: Paul Aston....isnt that the guy from The Fast and the Furious?
  • 43 2
 Cmon, Brendan!
  • 2 0
Yeah! We all know he’s the flowest but will he win? Fingers crossed x
  • 10 0
Don't act like those session comments ain't up there^
  • 43 3
 looks like a Szechuan.
  • 4 0
We should turn down the heat, I'm sure Scotts been getting peppered with these remarks.
  • 13 0
Im confused. Wasn't there already a full press release showcasing the new team and carbon rig?
  • 9 2
We were able to grab some screenshots from a video but this is our first time seeing the bike in the flesh
  • 8 0
It's been all over the riders social media since mid January with them not hiding much so this is nothing we haven't seen already, nice to see some close up detail shots though and the bike is stunning! Scott is on fire atm.
  • 7 2
Not everyone follows Twitter. This is the first I've seen of it. Very nice it is too!
  • 2 0
@jaame: I don't have twitter either, Instagram however is great for spying new kit
  • 13 0
 Those pedal pins look hungry
  • 2 2
tbh I have no idea how people ride dh on flats with pins much shorter than that
  • 6 0
 @colincolin: by dropping them heels
  • 2 0
All you need now is a new pair of sandals to go with them...love that shit, although many times have I been ejected and my sandals are still on the pedals, lol.

 Nice Ride!

Really Interested to try out those new Assegai's on the front tire, been riding a magic mary for years now and it's great but that tire looks like the best of all tires in the last 5 years. Anyone else ridden one? thoughts?
  • 3 0
I've ridden a 29 version in DH casing for a while (primarily in the front) and really like it. Been switching between Maxxis DHF and Shortys or Specialized Butcher and Hillbilly depending on conditions in the past. We have a lot of wet conditions where I live and prefer Shortys style tires up front still, but whenever it dries up slightly I've been on the Assegai. Extremely damp and predictable in DH casing, had a week in Finale on them as well and never ridden a tire that has given that much confidence in rocky sections before. DD version doesn't weigh much less than DH casing, but will be interesting to see if the exo+ version will carry any of the same characteristics.
  • 1 0
@thestraightline: Weights are published for EXO/EXO+... quite a bit lighter but still >1kg so heavier than Minions in same width/casing

Yep. A great tire that's making me retire my DHF/DHRII. - 275 DH casing. Corners as well as the DHF up front. Grips better overall, similar to a Mary, but wears much better. In the DH casing it has a kevlar bead and feels more nimble than the DHF and Mary. Sets up well tubeless on dt FR 570/560 rims. Have not run it out back yet but seems plenty grippy, and higher volume, so should at least match the DHRII in straight line braking. I've got one going out back for to start off this DH season. Might be a slow roller but where I ride traction in the wet and slick is king.
  • 1 0
I love it as a front tire for sure. I do wish I could run a DD instead of DH casing on my Sentinel. I have run it with an Aggressor and DHF on the rear. Both were great combos with the Assegai on front.
  • 2 0
I way prefer the top tube design to the session, in general my opinion is the session is ugly and I think the linkage is far superior with the shorter chainstay linkage its going to ride more like an Aurum. Id be very happy to try this bike out Smile
  • 4 0
Bikes are all morphing into the same general form these days, in saying that if it works don't knock it. Those top rocker stays look a bit thin on the inside?
  • 3 1
I suppose it was inevitable that designs would eventually land on an optimum layout. Still a few outliers to buck the trend though
  • 1 0
yeah you definitely see that with aero bikes these days. stands to reason the ideal math only really has one total number and only a few ways to get there.
  • 2 0
Lower shock attachment point moved to the rear (as far as possible it seems) to increase progressiveness at the end of the stroke.
  • 2 0
I love how low and tiny it is, friggin' awsm!
P.S. Hasn't Brendog been showing his bike on IG for a month now? Mind you, the photos are not detailed, but still there.

 Mcdonalization of mtb
  • 3 0
 You're making me hungry homie
  • 2 0
Ugh. I keep calling Scott dealers and shouting, “SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY” but they keep yelling back, “ITS A 2020, QUIT YELLING AT ME!”
  • 6 3
 Looked way better in Aluminium.
  • 3 0
Wish they refined the old design instead
  • 1 0
If the Rocky Mountain Maiden and Trek Session were to have a child, this would be it!!! It looks sleek but looks like everything else out on the market now
  • 1 0
But there has to a be one dimension somewhere on that bike that is 0.7 mm different from any other, which means in the mountain bike marketing world. ITS NEW TECHNOLOGY !!!
  • 1 0
Looks like the old Norco Aurum, linkage and shock setup identical. Lol.

But does it have Twinloc? Big Grin

"Another detail worth noting is that Fairclough is on ENVE's M9 wheels."
And Greg Minaar's tyres lol
  • 4 2
I think i can see a crack on those ENVEs

*CSI music*

Lets zoom in.....

 Enhance.
  • 2 0
Ellsworth Dare with shorter top link - all of them ;-)
  • 1 2
not really a SESSION. The lower end pivot on the SESSION is on the axle. This one the pivot is on the lower chain stay, so this design is more on the Kona Operator. SESSION not really.
  • 2 0
the operator's pivot is on the seatstay. Session jokes notwithstanding, we're clearly settling on about 4 different suspension designs and everything is just a variation on one of these: 1) Horst Link (like this one) 2) dual short links (like DW link) 3) VPPs like Santa Cruz and the like and 4) single pivots (which include the Session, Operator etc.) often with some sort of linkage activating the shock.
  • 1 0
Also the top tube has a bend in it
  • 2 0
Ok, I'll start - It looks like a Maiden!
  • 1 0
Should have just made the other frame carbon and interchangeable between 27.5 and wagon wheels. Simple. Effective.
  • 3 0
 BRENDOG!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • 1 0
Looks like a RM Maddin which looks like a session that looks like a old Kona maybe?
  • 1 0
Looks like Trek or my Kona Supreme Operator
  • 8 8
I am out. My gambler is the last one ill get from scott. Not buying in to this carbon fever the industry has. No thanks.
  • 7 3
ya carbons a fad, probably won't last long
  • 5 1
those kids will be sorry when this whole internet fad is over
  • 4 1
I'm sure there'll be an alu version...
  • 3 2
I hope the lower shock bolt is a decent one!
  • 1 1
Tell r&d you know PB let’s have something which don’t bring it’s a Session comment
  • 2 1
 Rip-off and duplicate. R&D at it's finest.
  • 1 1
Welcome to modern industry! You forgot to include the part where the price keeps going up.
  • 2 0
 Meh ...
  • 1 3
Snooze-fest. I'm a HUGE fan of Brendan's but Scott has become so vanilla to me in the past few years. I owned a 2018 Scott Genius and Spark. Both rode decent enough but they just weren't exciting to me.
  • 1 0
The aluminum bike with the sharpie graphics was rad. Bring that one back.
  • 1 0
I would gamble the prices point ate different compare to a session
  • 1 0
Would like to see NINO riding this Wink
  • 1 1
THAT bike looks sleeker than Ransom e-bike?
  • 2 4
Yawn. Just another 4 bar/Horst link design. Stop spending money on advertising and start spending it on R&D. There is nothing new about this bike.
  • 9 1
its not about the frame layout, why mess with something proven its all about the details, geometry and pivot placement that makes a big difference to the ride, are you saying horst link bikes from 20 years ago are the same so we should all ride them?
  • 4 1
@maglor: Exactly. This is the internet today though - just have to ignore foolish statements. Companies like Scott have entire teams of engineers with massive credentials and experience working on the EDP, yet children still love to point and say 'look mommy, it looks like that other bike, it must be the same!'
  • 1 0
I think the majority of people who ride and follow dh are looking for something new and unique after 10 years of the modern session design. Yes it might be tried and true, but don't you get stoked when brands engineer something new that works just as well?

On the other hand look at road bike design... How long has the silohuette been the same?
  • 1 0
@leviatanouroboro: This thing looks so much cooler than a session (personal i know but i'm excited by it) so no its not just another bike the same, and the old gambler was different yet it never got any real results did it... judging by things I've heard this will be a much better bike.
  • 2 1
 Looks like a sentinel.

 Looks like a bike
