Spotted: Prototype High Pivot Full Suspension Bike in North Vancouver

Feb 23, 2021

Pinkbike user and super sleuth Tonkatruck has sent us through this picture of a prototype full suspension trail bike in North Vancouver.

Tonkatruck was the Pinkbike user who also spotted Norco's still unreleased high pivot, carbon, long-travel bike in August last year. This time he was on his way to get pizza just below Mount Seymour when he spotted this bike on the rack of a parked car.

So, what is it? Well, it uses Dave Weagle's Split Pivot design and the rocker shares a similar outline to the recently updated Troy and Marshall, so we'd have to guess it's a Devinci. This is a Split Pivot with a difference though, namely, a high pivot design.

If the bike is a Devinci, this isn't exactly new ground for them and the Quebec brand have been experimenting with high pivot designs through the Wilson they were testing on the World Cup circuit last year. According to Devinci, the concept first came to light over 20 years ago with a bike called the Big Bang, a high pivot DH bike in the early 2000s, and culminated with the Wilson HP design unveiled at the Leogang World Championships last year. For more information on that bike, read Dan Sapp's deep dive, here.

photo
The Devinci Wilson HP was an experiment in combining the Split Pivot with a High Pivot design.

The Wilson HP was never designed for production and only two frames were ever made, one for Dakotah Norton and one for Jure Žabjek. Instead, it was an experiment to see how the HP concept matched with the Split Pivot system and we'd speculate this bike is the culmination of that.

Don't get too excited yet though, while this bike does look to be made in carbon, we're not expecting it to be released any time soon, and there definitely isn't a full review coming tomorrow. Devinci tends to release its flagship models in September each year, with the new Troy coming last year, the Django the year before and the Spartan in 2018, so we're not expecting to hear anything concrete about this bike for the best part of a year or longer. However, we'll be keeping an eye on Devinci's athletes to see if we can get any better shots of this bike at an event and will update you with any more news as we have it.

You should not have taken this picture let alone posted it to the internet. It's not yours to share, it's the bike developers. It's kinda like riding an unfinished loamer, you stole those first tracks from the builder.
  • 46 2
@buildandride: Well, maybe they shouda put it INSIDE the vehicle if they were so concerned about it? Leaving it on a rack like that is basically asking for it to be posted, so maybe they actually WANTED it to get posted?
  • 11 13
@davec113: The bike was asking for it (sarcasm)

If it's a Devinci, it's the best looking bike they've released in a long time. It looks good.
  • 7 1
And yet the biggest travesty is that for some reason they have the derailleur side of the bike trays facing each other.

This is aesthetically and functionally unacceptable to my "don't let derailleurs see each other" brain.

If you worked for years to develop something, wouldn't you want to release it on your own terms rather than have some anonymous internet fame-seeker leak it? Spy shots piss bike engineers off, and I think a large website like pinkbike should use more discretion in what they choose to post.
  • 13 1
 @buildandride:

May I introduce you to the world of free publicity and drip marketing?

Used to, Specialized duct taped the head tube on the original Demo9 just so no one could see the techniques used. That's a simple example.

But this is not some secret ride spot that all the Strava kids are tagging and heat mapping.
This is a bike on a car in public view of thousands. If you want to keep a secret, you keep your moth shut.
If you want to hide a physical object, you don't put it on open highways on a display rack.

You're taking this way too far.
  • 6 2
@buildandride: What a bizarre lens you see the world through. I know I'm banging my head against the Wall of Incorrigible, but WTF. So here goes... If I were to work years on ANYTHING, and wanted to keep it under wraps, I wouldn't then go out in public with it...period...full stop. If I chose to go out in public with it, and I was confident that I had something of interest, I would expect it to be noticed, which in today's world means: photographed and posted. To think anything less would require a damaged or infantile intellect.

Now let's go one step further. If I had a secret game I was working on, and went to CES and setup a monitor and played it in the lobby, would I be actually insane to think it wouldn't be noticed, photographed, posted? Like if I had a secret bike and PUT IT ON A FRIGGIN HITCH RACK, parked in a bike-centric community??? Hell, parked in f*cking industrial Brooklyn...parked anywhere... Yea, I'd need to institutionalize myself.

Maybe I am taking it too far, maybe I'm not, my point is just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. There are consequences to this post whether intentional by OP/PB or not.

It's not like developing a bike is some top-secret mission, it's a bike. My point is that OP/PB should have enough sense to know that the developer and their marketing team have plans to release the bike at some point, and posting this photo takes some of the ooo ahhh factor out of it when it finally gets released. Prototypes go through testing, testing involves going out in the world, people are going to see the bike. You shouldn't have to go to extremes to hide it, people should respect the process and not blow the lid off before the designer intended. It really comes down to the principle of putting yourself in the other persons shoes and considering the effect it might have on them.

I also don't see the reason to attack me personally, you're stirring up more controversy than there needs to be.
  • 6 5
@buildandride: Again, such a bizarre lens. Yes, there are indeed consequences for your actions. Something the person who decided to put it on a hitch rack and park it in a crowded parking lot in mountain biker territory should have thought of. Right? Because to think you could do such a thing and instead demonize the public for taking and posting pictures would be the height of insane Entitlement Syndrome, right?

@cuban-b-can-blow-me: I do agree that there are worse offenders that blow up the location of secret trails, I think it is the same mentality here with this photo, and that's why this bothers me so much.
  • 8 6
OK so the takeaway here is that people are going to do whatever they want if it serves them in some way and to assume that everyone is going to act primarily in their own self interest. If something you do has negative consequences on someone else it's probably their fault anyways. How depressing.
  • 3 2
@buildandride: OK, so let me come at this from a different direction. Was there a sign that said something to the effect of No Pictures? Anything like that?
  • 4 6
@Chuckolicious: Why do people need a sign to tell them how to conduct themselves?

Whats that Nissan wagon with the roof box back there? Is it a Canada-only model?
  • 29 0
I was about to say. Who cares about the bike, but that Nissan wagon has peaked my interest. Mostly likely a RHD driver import. We can import these after 15 years unlike the 25 year wait in the USA
  • 14 0
@piotrek21: BC in particular is so cool to look at for JDM oddballs in North America. I love reading the rumors about warehouses full of R34 GT-Rs right on the border waiting for the day they can be scalped in America at $200k.

Second gen Nissan Stagea. I'm pretty sure the first gen Stagea was only sold in Japan, not sure about the second generation. The first generation was very similar to the Skylne platform and they came with RBs. The second gen was based on the G35 platform and used VQs. Super sweet cars if you're a wagon fan.
  • 15 0
That is the thing I noticed in that photo. It is called a Nissan Stagea. They are beasts. Basically Skyline wagons. Forbidden fruit here in the US.
  • 1 0
@HollyBoni: I was thinking it was a non-GTR Skyline variant of some kind. Thanks for that info.
  • 2 0
@sjma: Roads Untravelled channel showcases how many R34s in lower mainland. Even GT-Ts with RB25 are becoming popular and getting expensive.
  • 1 0
Looks like it. Haven't seen one in a while here in Ontario
  • 1 0
@gabdumlao: R32s and R33s are popping up a decent amount here in the States. The non GTR versions are the most popular as you get a strong motor and RWD. They make great drift cars.
  • 4 0
It's definitely right hand drive. If you look at the windshield wipers they move from left to right.
  • 13 1
there are so many wagons that the US doesn't get. one of the best vehicle body styles in my opinion.
  • 2 0
@piotrek21: Yet another reason why you made the right choice. I hate being trapped down here in the leper colony!
  • 4 0
@imnotdanny: Agreed. I have a Golf Alltrack and it hauls me, family, and bikes all over the place comfortably, at 30 mpg.
  • 1 0

  • 1 0
@justinc5716: You know it, haha! You should see the diesel Land Cruisers that are cruising around here.
  • 1 0
@jmhills: The Alltrack is great. My 6MT will be even more awesome once it receives an injection of power via a larger turbo and a tune. Such a great versatile car.
  • 1 0
@piotrek21: And when US gets their hands on the diesel 3rd gen hilux surfs/4runners prices are going to jacked up too.

@jmhills: oh dear. The clapped out R33 gtst in clear-coat peeling dark red is the quintessential derro/dealer car in oz.
  • 2 0
Have them here in NZ as used Japanese imports. Earlier generation RB engined versions sell for more than the VQ series engined model pictured. I've seen some shockingly bad modified ones about. Can pick up a tidy VQ with low K's for NZ$5,000. $3,000 or less if you want a piece of shit with curbed chrome rims.
  • 2 0
@dirtyburger: clear coat peeling dark blue is the quintessential bogan derro/dealer wannabe drifter car in NZ.
  • 1 0
@piotrek21: I have the basic APR tune on mine and that more than woke it up.
  • 1 0
@dirtyburger: That is the perfect drift car.
  • 2 0
@streetkvnt-kvlt: even the vq engines are good though. Damn the US is missing out. It's almost a 350z/r34 wagon...
  • 1 0
@dirtyburger: is a derro a derelict? if so, I like it.
  • 2 0
@imnotdanny: yeah they're a solid motor. Basically you can say it's a 350Z wagon, same drivetrain, same chassis. Nissan did a VQ series Stagea called the Autech Axis 350S that was the only Stagea of that series to come with a 6 speed manual.

There was effectively a GTR wagon in the 90's known as the Autech 260RS. Nissan stopped making them in 2007.

Reckon the only JDM wagon around now is the Corolla wagon, lol.
  • 1 0
@shredddr: from this day forth, let the word 'derro' go forward an enter US vocabulary.
  • 3 0
@imnotdanny: I'm stubbornly holding on to my 2008 Passat wagon, even at 220,000 miles. There are so few wagons for sale anymore, and finding a good sized one with AWD is basically impossible. I like the Golf sportwagen but it's so much smaller than my Passat. I don't know if I'm willing to give up the space. Plus I do like my 3.6 VR6 Big Grin
  • 1 0
@BlackVR: if you're willing to put up with a few inches of added ride height the Outback with the 3.6 6 cylinder sounds like exactly what you're looking for. If you want a lower ride height, check out the Buick Regal Tour X (seriously)
  • 1 0
@BlackVR: I really wanted a Passat wagon when I bought the Alltrack but the Tiguan was all that was available in that size. I have a permanent search going for a B6 Passat 3.6 4mo with the sport package. Basically the closest we got to an R36 here.
  • 1 0
@sjma: that Buick is actually super cool. Looks good and is functional.
  • 1 0
@streetkvnt-kvlt: Mazda makes a Mazda6 wagon, I saw one in Germany a few years ago. The only fast wagons in the US are either old imports, lifted wannabe SUVs, or really expensive. Sad Frown

That GTR wagon is SO cool though!
  • 1 0
I love that the #2 thread on a post about MTBs is about cars.
  • 1 0
@imnotdanny: maybe the Euro guys can comment on its build quality/reliability - the Regal Tour X is exactly the same as a Vauxhall/Opel Insignia estate.
  • 2 0
@streetkvnt-kvlt: I like southern hemisphere slang - I'll go my best to introduce derro. Bogan is solid as well...
  • 1 0
 @sjma: They're all GM
  • 2 0
@sjma: The driving dynamics absolutely do not compare. I have also got an Outback. It is in that middle space between SUV crossover and wagon. It is a nice ride but it is no where near as interesting and engaging of a driving car. The B6 is a good, fun car to drive.

I looked a TourX/ Regal wagon. It looks good on the outside but I think they made all of the interior panels out of melted down Tonka toys. For the money you are spending, the interior materials and fit and finish are garbage. The other thing is the transmission. It has 8 speeds and it wants to use all of them. As quickly as possible. Then, once it got the the 8th gear, it absolutely refused to let it go unless you smashed down on the pedal to force a downshift. It was horrible. The motor had good power though.
  • 1 0
@jmhills: Well, if I ever do break down and sell mine, I can let you know Smile That's exactly what I have, 2008 3.6 4Motion sport, facelift with the updated engine, Xenons, everything except adaptive cruise.

I'm an Audi tech for a living, so I drive Audis all day and I literally don't know if I'd give up my car for anything in Audi's lineup even, except for the RS6 haha.
  • 1 0
@BlackVR: Lucky guy you are. That is exactly what I would have loved to get my hands on. I bought my MKV Fahrenheit GLI instead. HIndsight says I would still have the Passat if I had. I ended up selling the GLI and buying a C5 allroad. Phenomenal car but also a massive pain at the same time. I spent more time in a loaner A3 than the allroad. If I had the patience, that allroad was the perfect wagon. Comfortable, tons of space, lots and lots of power, and the suspension allowed me to get to trailheads really easily.
  • 1 0
@BlackVR: oh yes, the RS6. One of the greatest cars ever to exist.
  • 1 0
@shredddr: I'm glad to hear Bogan has made its way there.
  • 1 0
@imnotdanny: ah yeah I forgot about the Mazda 6. Can still buy them new here. There's also the Subaru Levorg but we're one of the few countries outside of Japan to get it.
  • 1 0
@sjma: we use to have that wagon but it was called the Holden Commodore. Build quality and reliability was solid but that brand is dead now as GM has mostly withdrawn from RHD markets. Incidentally that Euro built Holden/Opel/Vauxhall/Buick replaced the Australian built RWD Commodore which came with V6/V8 engines. Came out as a sedan/wagon/ute. You guys got it as the Pontiac G8/Chevrolet SS.
  • 1 0
@BlackVR: hang onto this for life! I had to trade in my CC 3.6 4motion and it's a decision I deeply regret. Best drivetrain VW ever made. The Touareg TDI is nice, but I miss that VR6 bad!

@CircusMaximus: LOL nsmb comments.. how about DON'T BRING A SUPER SECRET PROTOTYPE TO THE DUMPSTERS AND NOT EXPECT A PHOTO TO SHOW UP ON SOCIAL MEDIA. idk i don't have any sympathy for the rider. @tonkatruck had/has all the right to do this, if you wanna take the photo and spend the time posting it up to get some people rattled on pinkbike.. to each their own
  • 3 0
 @Zephyrus: Ohh snap !
  • 15 1
Did you call the number on the back of their car to ask them questions?
  • 12 1
I was a bit suprised no effort was made to blur that....
  • 9 2
Did some Googling on the company (Eye glasses), found some names on website, cross referenced with Instagram searches, found a likely pilot of bike.

@takeiteasyridehard: "Hi, my name is Freeride69420, calling from the Pinkbike Comment Section. Curious to see if you had any information to share on the bike spotted on the back of your company rig. Thanks!"

 @JDFF: They're a kitchen company no?

@T4THH: didn't want to make it too obvious.

I'm gonna guess the rider is Aurelio Marogna Based on linked in. Hi being the principal of Aya kitchens and looks like he's had a history of racing mountain bikes.

@juanny: Found the same info. He is big in riding but no trace online anywhere of an affiliation to any brand. One would think if you were riding a proto a connection could be found somewhere. Unless he happens to be an investor of some sort or just a friend of a friend. But ya, he seems to be really into MTB. Or one of his staff is an ambassador...

@pourquois-pas: looks like he does follow devinci on insta. No other bike manuf brands as far as I could see.
Old mates or money goes a long way in life.. I imagine the kitchen industry is doing pretty well right now and with an long history of racing he's probably made some decent connections.
Just speculation though of course.

@juanny: yo stop this shit is creepy as hell
  • 8 9
@drakefan705: what makes it creepy? Anyone on here can Google that company name, find the two listed owners and then easily see decades worth of publicly available online stuff related to MTB. Nothing personal posted.

If this creeps you out, stay off the internet man. You’d freak out if you understood what companies know about you.

Wouldn't at all be surprised if it's the new Spartan. Timing's right, the Troy is so capable now that they need a real big-bike to give you a reason to buy it, the geo, spec, and design looks right for enduro, the front triangle mold and chainstays are 100% Devinci.
If it's already carbon, that means it's damn close to production. Would be a hell of a bike!
  • 2 0
Yeah, the mold work around the head-tube in particular scream Devinci.
  • 4 0
Definitely looks like a Devinci to me.
  • 12 0
Hide your prototypes, Pinkbike spies are everywhere.
  • 10 1
MORE PICS OF THE NISSAN STAGEA!!!!!!
  • 9 5
this is epic. This dude knows bikes so well when he sees a bike he doesn't recognize, immediately knows if it's a prototype then proceeds to take a picture of the unsuspecting shred machine
  • 9 8
Guilty as charged. I can also tell you the make and model, maybe even year of most cars around tbh

you dont leave your bike like that when you go shopping!!
  • 2 0
Seriously, I'm so paranoid leaving my bike like that.
  • 1 0
This is at the bottom of Mt. Seymour in North Van.
  • 5 0
Try calling the phone number on the back of the car?
  • 5 0
Strange that it's got the OEM maxxis white tyres on
  • 3 0
it has the same or simmilar spec as a production devinci so they probably just grabbed parts meant for a spartan
  • 3 0
Yeah this really gives it away that it's probably an existing manufacturer, and the similarities to the Wilson HP seem to be too good to be coincidence. Some are saying this may be WeAreOnes new bike but I don't think so based off the tyres alone.
  • 1 0
@melonhead1145: Probably, but if a company are starting to make bikes I think they'd be able to get a hold of OEM parts but I have absolutely zero industry experience so I may be wrong.
  • 2 1
I'm interested to hear how the split pivot plays with a high pivot - if split pivots are supposed to help keep braking from affecting suspension, but high pivots tend to stiffen under braking forces, I'm curious to know what happens here.
  • 7 3
Looks like a proto trek ????
  • 1 0
def not no need for it with the slash doesn't have the same style as trek
  • 5 7
No it's got YT written all over it, including the silver shaped link against the black and that headtube shaping.
  • 2 2
@landscapeben: hmm true capra is like four years old
  • 1 1
@landscapeben: I have a Capra and was thinking the same thing. The top tube shape combined with the down tube width and angle screams Capra. The same with the side profile of the head tube.
  • 1 0
 @landscapeben:
YT would most likely be testing somewhere in europe. Keeping things under wraps is much easier here than anywhere in north america. They also have mostly european test riders as far as i know.
I also would suspect YT to roll out a major suspension overhaul on their flagship downhill bike first, with the enduro adaptation following shortly after, given how streamlined and homogenous their whole portfolio is. Component spec also doesn´t exactly scream YT.
  • 2 0
My info is the new Session is also a high pivot..
  • 1 0
Dylan Stark would be a good test pilot in Hellmecula.
  • 1 0
 @Loki87:
Last time I saw a yt prototype was in Klinovec. Erik Irmisch had a bike there nearly completely wrapped up in neoprene, so no linkage or frame details were visible.
  • 1 0
 @effeffeff:
Yup, Erik is probably the first one to get most or their prototypes.
  • 1 0
@Loki87: those are good points but different places provide different testing parameters so it's not outside of the realms of possibility still.
  • 5 1
Notice the the we are one wheels. Maybe its more local than devinci?
  • 2 0
"Spotted: Prototype High Pivot Full Suspension Bike" ... can you have a high pivot not full suspension bike? Rigid fork maybe?
  • 1 0
WTF is that insane bike? really nice!
The same with 27.5 wheels + 170mm rear travel+ gearboxe and I will be the first customer!!!!
  • 4 1
Looks like a Session... that was actually built for racing.
  • 2 2
I can only say it would be one of the 3 brands that use split pivot. Being a fan of the design, it's either devinci, trek or salsa. And It kind of looks more like trek than devinci.
  • 2 4
Very happy to see this leak. I'm tired of those embargo. I don't like journalist getting to close from brands. Even though I m pretty sure pinkbike crew know more about this bike than it is written here. If you like adds just wait for the press release from brand.
  • 2 0
OK now let us see the clear up close ones that you really got LOL.

 Almost looks Evil to me...
  • 1 1
 My first thought as well!
  • 1 1
 Def looks Evil
  • 1 0
The headtube does.. the rest.. not so much. Do you really think they'd go and abandon the DELTA linkage totally? Also, a bike like that would go head to head against the latest Wreck / Offering. Would make no sense from a marketing point of view. But what do I know.. maybe I'll be eating my words. That all being said - it is a nice looking bike.
  • 1 0
@CDT77: the way people buy Evils they could probably sell them this one in addition to their Wrecker/Offering and the Chamois Hagar they've got.... Yetis got dentists, Evil went straight for the orthodontist market!
