So why do we ride bikes? Like anything in life, we all get our kicks in different ways and that goes for mountain biking too. It could be the freedom a bike gives us, the amazing platform for creativity that they represent or the sense of adventure and of course the satisfaction that comes from progressing your skills and fitness. But above all of that, we ride because it is fun, plain and simple. It makes us smile, it makes us laugh and if it doesn't, you're not doing it right! And if ever there was a bunch of rad guys who know a thing or two about having the best times on two wheels, it's these guys...

Growing up far from the locations he's become synonymous for destroying on his bike, didn't stop Brendan Fairclough from becoming one of the world's most recognisable riders. The trick here is to maximise what you have and to not worry about what you don't. Get out there, build, shred and don't wait for the mountains to come to you!

bigquotesWe don't have big mountains in England and we don't have any chairlifts either. In fact, in Surrey, we barely have one minute long descents... I think because of that, we just make the most of what we DO have. And what we do have though - and in droves - are loads of good riders! That and some nice mounds of loam...

A 20-30 second long descent is fine with us, especially if it's all killer and no filler. No straights too and no time to think, and a minimum effort on the build helps for maximum fun in the loam. Don't ask where this is though, go build your own! P.S. It's in Swindon... Where's Swindon? Look it up!
- Olly Wilkins.

The recipe for a rad day in the hills doesn't come any simpler than friends, bikes and trails... Olly, Sam and Brendan push back up for another run with their loam loving compatriots, Ben Deakin, Sam Fowler and Daryl Brown.

bigquotesSo the idea for 'Backcountry' came about, back in 2014 when the S4P crew started digging at this secret spot just outside of Swindon. Covered in loam and hero dirt and all on this small yet steep hill - it was just so much fun to ride. So I went down one day and got the camera out and filmed a rough-and-ready video, which went down a storm... It's hard to make anything bad with all those boys, especially when they're all on good form and bouncing off each other, and the floor.

F**k knows why, but it took us a whole year to get together again and do another one of these edits. So, with a message from the S4P boys saying "are you free next week to come film", I dropped everything, grabbed (Chris) Seager and (Tom) Grundy, filled the car with camera gear and got down there. There were no steady cams, no jibs and very little slow-mo on the agenda, just good old fashioned simple fun with mountain bikes. The cameras were rolling pretty much non-stop because as soon as you stopped recording, someone would have a huge crash or something else wild would happen.

This edit was shot by myself and Grundy with Seager shooting bits in between trying to ride and keep up with the pros. As you will see in the video, he didn't do too badly, but not that great either ha-ha! Shout out to Grundy who killed it on the editing on this. You know it's kind of fun, doing a project like this with no client and no one to please. For this reason, I think these projects will always be lo-fi and all about the fun!

If this becomes an annual tradition, you can count me in, 100% - for the last two have been been filled with some of the memorable days. All hail the official S4P Swindon 'Loaman-Qualiceum'.

I hope you enjoyed the video and we look forward to bringing you Backcountry 3.0 next year!

You don't need groomed bike parks and chairlifts to have the best times on your bike. Just get out there and make your own fun.

From the Surrey hills to Rampage... Last years 'best trick' winner, Sam Reynolds, proves that you don't need to live in the Alps, BC or Utah to be one of the best.

bigquotesS4P Backcountry aims to capture the fun of mountain biking and show that the pros are just the same as you - it's all about having a good time with your mates. The track was built in a few hours and after some debate on line choice we had a selection of turns and kickers that could be threaded together in a multitude of ways. The riders rode, the filmers filmed and Chris Seager crashed...

With the edit I tried to make something a bit different; fast paced, pans and zooms, weird music and a bit of fun. It's rare you get an opportunity to completely make what you imagine in your head and to have no limitations on how strange it can be.

I hope you enjoyed the video and we look forward to bringing you Backcountry 3.0 next year!

The moral of the story is right here. Go grab some tools, scope out some lines and create your own loamy paradise... Just don't forget to ask landowners first, you don't want all your hard work torn down! Failing that, locate your local trail building groups and see if you can get involved with some volunteering.

Very nice edit, that's what mtb is all about, but telling us "Go grab some tools, scope out some lines and create your own loamy paradise." is a bit much. In England you can get into all sorts of trouble doing that without landowners, forestry commision and the Queen's permission. I'm a landscaper and would love to go and build on my nearest hill (even though its about 20 miles away) but cant because of restricted access and stupid legislation.
  • 5 1
Definitely - would love to go create something, but I'm yet to locate/get permission for any woodland in Kent where I can legally dig.
  • 3 1
look what happened in Surrey hills.....so sad
  • 8 1
@djm35 at the risk of getting a shitstorm of negative props, you're right I work for the FC the problem is that builders create lines and jumps to match their skill level, unfortunately the less skilled come along, fall off, get injured then sue the landowner, who is liable not the builder. And even if the landowner successfully defends their case it still costs lots of money better spent elsewhere. So if people want to build get in touch with local landowner and plan it together, or join in with dig days.
  • 1 0
gandalfsdad do you know if bike parks on FC controlled land need ridiculous amounts of public liability insurance, or can they get out of compensation claims by having lots of signs everywhere?
  • 1 1
@djm35 True but then again who will notice a narrow goat trail with a few little lips here and there?
  • 4 0
@gandalfsdad can we have our trails back? Only kidding chaps. A lot of peeps in the UK will have had 'correspondence' with the FC and found them to be quite reasonable and I'd like to say first that we have a good relationship with the FC in my area despite not always seeing eye to eye. My advice if you're going to build where maybe you shouldn't then don't spend days building a perfect wooden booter that looks like an alpine lodge, just cut in a trail (even by just riding it) linking as many natural features as you can. Restrict 'building' to clearing the trail and packing in natural landings. It's not always that easy but that's one good way to do it and natural trails are always best anyway.
  • 3 0
Bike parks if constructed by or with the support of the FC are fine, adequate signs are part of explaining what riders can expect when entering the trail or bike park. The problems arise when individuals build their own trails or jumps etc. At our place like others we have Red, Blue and green graded trails which gives riders an understanding what to expect. We also have many more miles of ungraded 'Off-piste' stuff, we don't manage it there's mikes of it making impractical to do so, lots of people like riding it and accept the risk that as its unmanaged natural trail, if they fall off they out it down to experience. Recently though someone built a shonky jump using logs and dug a pit next to the trail in order to cover the logs with earth. If someone who regularly rides those trails and does so in the dark and has an accident because of these alterations, he could argue the landowner should have known the the trail had been altered and could (and it has happen in the past) look for damages.
  • 4 0
@ThomDawson I cant speak for other areas, but if riders get organised set up a club or something and approach the FC particularly concerning woodland that has a history of trail activity, with a plan on how it could be managed the FC might be interested in moving forward. It depends on other issues such as other users etc. But if its a woodland that requires the local office to go traipsing miles just to knock down a bit of board walk made with a couple of pallets or even a door (I shit you not), you might find a new ally.
  • 2 0
Thanks @gandalfsdad, we may try and do something like that going forward but right now we have a good status quo. Within our own small area we have a fairly decent idea of what we can and cannot do. We've spoken with the FC on numerous occasions over the last two decades I suppose and like I say we have a respectful relationship. We're only a small group. By the way I notice you're based at sherwood pines? Can you tell me how to get to the dirt jump area without riding around the trail? I don't know the area that well but I've ridden the jumps on my trail bike a few times, I'd like to get in there on the DJ bike but obviously it's not really the right tool for riding the trail, especially not at the moment!
  • 1 0
@ThomDawson the easiest way from the car park is follow the Blue route to posts 10 to 11, otherwise you're following fire roads, or head to the main offices through the car park, past the farm on your right and stay on that fire road for about a mile and a half. The Blue is hard going at the moment, motorbikes have been in and trashed it, its rideable but its not fun especially on a DJ bike.
  • 2 0
Cheers that's what I needed! Yeah the blue is the way I'd normally go but I was there a few weeks back and it was wet even back then! Definitely not ideal on a DJ bike. Thanks again @gandalfsdad.
  • 9 0
People need to stop being bitches and accept if you fall off your bike and hurt yourself, it's your own goddam fault.
  • 1 0
gandalfsdad, I know some of the riders from a group that has set up the bike park at Ribbesford and even though they got all the correct permission and built everything themselves and put up graded trail signs, they recently had their double black run flattened as it was deemed too extreme.
  • 1 0
The people who pointlessly dig out gap jumps to make them dangerous should be shot (and banned in case they come back from the dead)
  • 2 0
@djm35 maybe it was outside of the plans they submitted/agreed to. Perhaps if they graded it as a freeride area, they sit outside of red or black, with differnt signs like a traffic light, orange background with a white circle starting with one, then increasing upto three to show difficulty, if theyre in the trail create a 'b' line and have them as optional lines. Obviously, I don't know the details but it probably would've helped, or at least saved them a load have hassle if they'd checked first.
