Ruff Cycles Launches World's First e-Dirt Jump Bike

Aug 4, 2021
by James Smurthwaite

Ruff Cycles, a German brand best known for making electric bikes that look a bit like motorbikes for city riders, has today it has announced its move into making mountain bikes for the first time.

Rather than churn out a catalogue frame with a few cheap parts hanging off it as we've seen other brands try, Ruff Cycles is hoping to make a splash with a brand new category of bike - eDirt Jump bikes. Yes, the final frontier has been broken, the category of mountain bikes best known for their simplicity and nimbleness has now been welcomed in the electric revolution.

photo

These bikes will be released under the Xpro label and Ruff Cycles have also signed FMB rider Lucas Huppert to help launch the brand. Huppert will have the choice of the Digga Pro as a regular slopestyle frame but alongside it is the the Digga Volt, which is the electrified version.

Ruff Cycles says it is hoping to "break new ground and turn the market upside down" with this frame. It said, "The world’s first eDirtbike Digga Volt will be released – of course equipped with a Bosch drive for maximum performance even in the dirt park. The Digga Volt underlines the ambitions of Ruff Cycles Xpro."

Adolf Silva has also been testing the bikes.

At the moment, the details are thin on the ground for this frame but we know it uses a Bosch motor and we imagine it uses a smaller battery than you might normally find on an eMTB to keep the weight down. The pictures we have show a spec including a Gates Carbon Belt Drive, Michelin tyres and an X Fusion fork but we're not sure these will carry over to the consumer version. The bikes are set to be released "over the next few months". We have reached out to Ruff Cycles for more information and will update you as we get it.

So, eTrials bike in 6 months time?

But you should! Recently I was watching some riders at a park and the only ones to clear the big stuff were on ebikes. Sometimes you just need the speed to get you the distance.

@ilovedust: If you need an ebike to clear the jumps either the riders suck or the jumps suck. A decent dirt jump line shouldn't require any pedaling.
  • 10 0
 lulz.... agreed!

The only small (unnecessary) application I can think of is: Assuming you live close-ish/far-ish to some DJ's, use the battery to get you and the bike there. Then remove the battery whilst hitting jamps! Save a car ride...?

In that instance, it would almost make more sense to have a backpack with a battery and some kind of mag-safe cord to connect to your bike.

That all said, just cuz you can, don't mean you should..

Dirt jump bikes are great because they are simple and relatively light. Why add a motor, and a heavy battery (A battery that's likely to die halfway through your ride, leaving you with a super heavy, slow bike). It's cool to try new ideas and innovate, but until ebikes weigh the same as normal bikes, and have a super long battery life, I don't see the benefit.

Personally, I like the fact that normal mechanical bikes are simple, light, and will keep on going until your legs can't handle anymore.
  • 10 0
I'm sure everyone will appreciate your 40lb motorized bike flying into them when you don't make the landing.
  • 28 1
so let's break down a dirtjumper:

joy of riding (putting it to use): 100
joy of pedaling: probably 0
joy of pedaling with a motor: 0*x = 0

seems like a legit business!
  • 21 0
Would a bad case wreck the motor? Even with a motor, based on Fridays Fails, a lot of people can't seem to judge speed. Instead of a chainring mark in the jump you would have a big hole to fix as well. Not that I have ever cased anything.....

The confusing part is how far of a departure this is from their core business of city bikes and e-bikes. My initial reaction is its an e-bike for a market that probably benefits the least from e-bikes, but maybe I'm missing something. Time and sales will tell.
  • 15 0
Are we that lazy now that we can’t even deal with the pedal back up to the start ramp?
  • 7 0
To be anything but useful it needs not to be speed limited hence being illegal in the streets/roads. Nobody wants to drive to the bikepark. If it has a speed limit yes you can ride on the street but nobody has any issue reaching 25kph in a bike park so a motor would only be useful to ride it like a MX bike (and e-mx bike are already in the market).

I understand e-trail bikes, e-commuters or e-cruisers. I do not understand this.

I am always open minded about anything bikes, because let's be real here, bikes are one of the greatest things and its all love. Im stoked for anyone who is stoked on any type of bike or riding discipline in general. However, this is a bit dumb considering it is a DJ bike, but for those mtb street riders this could be a game changer when cranking around the streets.
  • 5 0
Imagine having to get a warranty every time you slam your 40 pound Dj bike into the ground. The whole point of the bike is to make it as simple as possible so there's not much to break on it and a good balance of strength/weight so it will be good after a hard slam. This goes the complete opposite of dirt jumping doctrine and is a step backwards when it comes to the progression of the sport.

I live in a medium city and my job is 6km commute as the crow flies with some hills.

Whilst this bike is billed as a DJ bike it is also (mind blowingly) a fun street bike.

For a while I want a commuter bike rather than burning hydrocarbons in my backyard.
I don’t want a f*cking Specialized Cumo or Como or whatever. I don’t want an eMTB. This is the perfect bike for my commute. I can ride in on boring days and f*ck around when I want to.

Obviously it’s not for riding at the trails.

  • 1 2
How about this. "If it does not work for you, dont get it"! What difference does it make if new items come to market and someone, maybe only a few, or maybe its a lot, find a use for it and a way it makes them ride better or more often because it is fun for them. I wonder if the first multi speed bikes were called abominations, or if the first people of full suspension were called Puzzies. It reminds me of the day that the first four wheeler was released and everyone called people that rode them grandpa or said that they were lesser skilled as they needed four wheels instead of three. Its just progress and it can go forward or stay the same depending on who, or how many decide it is something that works for them. Lets all get out and ride and have a good ride no matter what ya brung. Staying positive! Ride on!!

It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine (REM)...
"Easy E were ya ever caught slippin'?"
Hell no!!! (SUBLIME)
  • 1 0
Not to be petty but "Easy E were you ever caught slippin" is from an Easy E track, Sublime just sampled it.

I just hope Strava create a separate class for e-dirt jump bikes, or the whole sport is ruined!
  • 4 0
Yeah, I gotta keep my dirt jump line KOMs!!
  • 1 4
Yeah coz so many people are setting Strava times on DJ bikes already...?
  • 1 0
I hate it, but also I imagine it's a ton of fun ripping around a city. Not sure why anyone would want this for actual dirt jumps
  • 1 0
Agree, my first thought was 'wtaf' but it's a great commuter rig if you have a secure lockup for it at the other end.
  • 1 3
TO GeT YOU BACK TO THE TOP OF THE LINE QUICKER... DUUUHHH!
  • 3 0
 that is fucking retarded.
  • 2 0
The bike industry once again solving problems people didn't know they had..
  • 1 3
Like all industry in general then..
  • 1 1
Making 10 of these is cheaper than your average marketing release so I guess we can put this down to a marketing stunt, no serious bike company could have got things so wrong surely?
  • 1 0
OK so the guy with the e-bike does exactly the same thing as the one with the regular bike but with more efforts. That make a lot of sense.....
  • 1 0
An E-Street-BMX might be the only thing to top this.. And goodbye to MTB April fools jokes, reality just killed the competition.
  • 2 0
i need a bucket to trhow up
  • 2 0
It's not even April 1st yet
  • 1 0
Excellent trollage. Bravo! Even went to the length of making a sick riding edit - these guys take their art seriously.
  • 3 1
Quick! Kill it with fire, before it lays eggs!
  • 2 4
Thanks alot for the comments and feedback regarding our new project.

Many of you ask why we would do such thing?
Cause we are fanatics who like to experiment and push our experiences to the limit.
With the Digga Volt eBike, even the ride to the bike park is a ton of fun.
Helps you preserve your energy for more laps, more stunts, more action in the bike park.

But that does not mean that we will not also have the most bad-ass performance dirt but also slopestyle frame coming soon, just wait for the upcoming release of the „Digga Core“!
  • 16 17
My first reaction: "that doesn't make any sense."

My second reaction after imagining what dirt jumps could look like and where they could be built if you didn't need gravity: "holy crap this could be huge!"
  • 9 11
Also, as I think about this more, I like it even more. When I was a young whippersnapper and did stuff like dirt jumping, I didn't have a car...and to be honest, I still feel weird driving to ride all these years later. But riding a DJ bike to get to the DJs can suck, especially if they're not close. So I suppose that an EDJbike could help with that issue as well.
  • 1 3
 Totaly agree!
  • 15 0
Only the very skilled should be riding jumps so large, and if you are that skilled, then you can pedal and pump.
  • 4 0
If you want to see how big the jumps could be, see freestyle motocross
  • 3 1
@oldmanjoe: I think Big Red's point is that this might allow bigger jumps to be built without the slope or roll in needed now. Or for dirt jump lines to go more abruptly into the bigger jumps rather than starting out with smaller jumps to pump and build speed. It gives builders more freedom in how they utilise the terrain.
  • 1 1
@Patrick9-32: Bingo. I'm much more interested in the idea of building more jump lines in more places and having them be less obtrusive, especially in larger cities where space is at a premium.
  • 4 0
@Patrick9-32: Looks good on paper but pedaling into and especially between jumps sucks, with or without a motor. No flow, no rhythm. Smaller leading jumps are actually for this purpose. Also as a qualifier, the ability to make it through smaller rhythm should happen before using a motor to get into a 20’ double.
  • 6 0
@big-red: Pretty hard to imagine pedaling into jumps with an ebike would be a contribution to anything other than friday fails
  • 2 0
@big-red: You would need more room to pedal the ebike in to get speed than you get from a simple roll in deck. If the jumps are built right they should generate plenty of speed with minimal space even for pretty big jumps.

I'm ebike owner and love it, as well as riding normal bikes but I fail to see the point of this?????
  • 1 4
Then maybe you should think a bit harder about when you love your ebike the most, then you might get it...
  • 2 1
I mean, I like ebikes, I think they're fun as fuck. But this is taking the piss.

Ebike need to treated same as American political parties/belief. If your anti ebike your a traditionalist hence a Republicans in American terms. Ebike lovers are Democrats and liberals. What are you traditionalist/conservative or someone who is interested in progression (of mountain biking)? I’m kidding by the way - feel free to drop your comments.
