Yikes that is is not a lot of money to live in Boulder CO. Sad to see such poor wages for such an important role at a company. After purchase support is so important for a mountain bike brand, and its hard to imagine someone is motivated to do a great job barely scraping by.
If you wonder why warranty and customer support (and engineering, and manufacturing) aren't so hot on your 10k new bike-THIS is why!!!!!
The bike industry is notoriously poor in its pay scales. Just like how Santa Cruz gets away with cost of living imbalance by saying.... well... you live in Santa Cruz.... the bike industry and other similar industries (snow is no different).. get away by saying... well... you work in the bike industry or you work in the snow industry. It's rad.
And to a point, they have a point. To a point.
Technically if they do warranties like specialized does, they can work remotely for 1 hr a week and just click reject on everything?
Anyone know of mtb brands committed to paying living wages? I'll gladly pay a bit more for a a frame or wheels if I know the people working there aren't starving
£40k is quite a good salary in the UK.
And those experienced engineers that enter the industry with grand ideas clearly have no idea of the practicalities of keeping a bike working 6 months down the line.
Bike industry is daylight robbery interms of quality that gets return for list price.
That is assuming it was a typo. If it is truly $40k a year living in Boulder you will exist at, or below the poverty line.
The average American home price hit $431,000 this quarter. Only about three years ago it was $330,000. If you don't own property yet slum it and save up.
$48K is ridiculous pay in Boulder Co., especially for a product that yields 50+% GP at list price. And for the amount of experience that job asks for, it is insulting. I agree with you on some things, but you're still just a smart mouth punk bitching about the exact people who saved the freedoms you so eagerly abuse.

Not jealous at all, I actually DO own the title to my home, have zero debt and a great paying job.
You clearly lack the ability to read the room, or accurately assess one's demeanor, maybe you ought to quit giving advice and stick to stealing time from your employer. LOL
I don't even have a bachelor's degree, and if I did, I wouldn't (or couldn't) work for free for a year. And the prospect of trying to get working credentials in the USA as a non-resident in this day and age feels scary to me. I moved to France last year and the hoops to do anything are tremendous, especially if you have no help from an employer (which my wife does). So Continental are asking for a turnkey junior sales guy to customize for a potential paycheque a year from now? I suppose someone always needs some sort of job.

The job they were advertising for should have been at least £10k more for what the role was - taking into account the technicality and huge amount of work , when I stated my current salary they didn’t have the decency to even reply!
In reality the market is crowded with businesses trying to sell similar products to too few buyers who have little disposable income.
Two solutions:
If there were less companies then there would be less competition so wage demands would stand a better chance of being met as prices could go up.
If there were fewer potential employees looking for work they would have to raise wages to attract staff.
Neither solution is good for us.
As for number of bike companies, there aren't that many if you peer behind the curtain (Merida/Specialized, Pon owning a crappile of companies, etc.). There will be fewer in the next year or 2. And companies are NOT filling these posts that easily. Anytime a skilled job goes to the Classifieds it's a red flag.
If they did it the other way around there might even be a reason to buy a new bike and they dont get it back broken.
