$48k-52k is the salary range for the Technical Warranty Lead for Privateer Bikes.

Yikes that is is not a lot of money to live in Boulder CO. Sad to see such poor wages for such an important role at a company. After purchase support is so important for a mountain bike brand, and its hard to imagine someone is motivated to do a great job barely scraping by.
  • 36 0
That's honestly higher than most. Try living in Santa Cruz on like $40k....shit trying living anywhere on that.
  • 34 1
@lowkeyokeydokey: Exactly my point. How can management expect someone to try their best when they are barely living. This Hunt/Privateer job wants 3-5 years of wheel building experience for $23-$25/hour. Also you are managing a department and in charge of warranty. That is honestly insulting. A bike shops in my area hire wheel builder/pro mechanic for the same or more than that.
  • 49 1
Gas stations in Boulder County starting pay 60k for store manager position. Why would ANYONE take a job that pays below local market to work in the bicycle (or other specialty sporting goods) market?!

If you wonder why warranty and customer support (and engineering, and manufacturing) aren't so hot on your 10k new bike-THIS is why!!!!!

@wyorider: Say it louder for the gen x/boomers still saying "you kids should be thankful you even have a job, I worked for free for years to build my career and bought my house for $90k"

@Jer3myF: You worked for free? Must be nice to have mommy and daddy take care of you until you get work experience!!!! It's unethical to expect free of below market labor-period.
  • 16 1
@lowkeyokeydokey: No doubt. I know some folks trying to do exactly that. You live like college students. 3-5 to a house. Low budget living. Etc.

The bike industry is notoriously poor in its pay scales. Just like how Santa Cruz gets away with cost of living imbalance by saying.... well... you live in Santa Cruz.... the bike industry and other similar industries (snow is no different).. get away by saying... well... you work in the bike industry or you work in the snow industry. It's rad.

And to a point, they have a point. To a point.

@onemanarmy: I'd say the issue with that point is they get entitled trust-funders who don't need the money working for them. Whole companies end up staffed with folks who have never needed a job (so they could work their way up the low-paid ranks)-and that breeds a degree of complacency and indifference. It's one thing to offer less pay than an aerospace or pharmaceutical company might offer-it's another to offer literal starvation wages.
  • 27 0
its not a job its an “experience” lol.

Technically if they do warranties like specialized does, they can work remotely for 1 hr a week and just click reject on everything?
  • 10 1
@wyorider: Very well said. It is a shame that this is how things are.

Anyone know of mtb brands committed to paying living wages? I'll gladly pay a bit more for a a frame or wheels if I know the people working there aren't starving
  • 16 1
I wonder if they just took the UK salary and converted it to dollars...

£40k is quite a good salary in the UK.
  • 2 0
@korev: I hope it is a typo and they actually do pay enough to live and have a family
  • 18 1
@wyorider: bike industry is in absolute shambles. Spent over 10 years behind the lines in bike shops all over the world, from plain old mechanic, workshop management to specialist suspension work. Now studying mechanical engineering. The bike industry is full of people who have no idea what they are doing.

And those experienced engineers that enter the industry with grand ideas clearly have no idea of the practicalities of keeping a bike working 6 months down the line.

Bike industry is daylight robbery interms of quality that gets return for list price.
  • 11 0
@korev: £40k = $49k. A single human in Boulder can expect to spend $2500 a month including rent if only living by their basic needs, $30k annually. Another $9k will go to taxes in Colorado. Another $1.5k for car insurance. Down to only $8k a year to put towards student debt, car payments, saving up for a home, and hobbies.

That is assuming it was a typo. If it is truly $40k a year living in Boulder you will exist at, or below the poverty line.
  • 5 2
@onemanarmy: It sounds like pretty much how all Americans in their 20s live. When you have tens of thousands in student debt on your back, and you are attempting desperately to one day buy a home and attain financial freedom in our system, it is the only way to live.

The average American home price hit $431,000 this quarter. Only about three years ago it was $330,000. If you don't own property yet slum it and save up.

  • 11 0
@Jer3myF: Maybe boomers are saying that but as a Gen Xer with two kids approaching adulthood I have nothing but empathy for the younger generations. The median home price in Bellingham, the area I've lived all my life is nearly $700,000. We are preparing for the distinct possibility that if our kids want to stay in this area it might just be a multi-generational household situation in our home.

@Jer3myF: Wo. I was right with you until you decided to attack people who are in a different age group than you. So first, FU. 2nd, stop being afraid to drive, start actually DRIVING instead of feeding your ego by death scrolling at every traffic light. And find the courage to actually look people in the eyes and communicate for a change. You might find that even people older than you aren't the a*sholes you want to paint them as. Most of the shit you use was created by them, jackoff.

$48K is ridiculous pay in Boulder Co., especially for a product that yields 50+% GP at list price. And for the amount of experience that job asks for, it is insulting. I agree with you on some things, but you're still just a smart mouth punk bitching about the exact people who saved the freedoms you so eagerly abuse.

@lowkeyokeydokey: us older guys "yikes, hourly that's only like $22 an hour. Or in American terms a fry cook at McDonald's plus $3 an hour. Or more simply with this job, the candidate is being offered less than 3 big Mac meals and hour to deal with problem bikes and unhappy people AND managing people. How can a cantidate possibly eat enough big macs and afford to live?"
22 year olds straight out of school
"F*** it, BIKES and I'm the lead?! I'm IN!"
Speaking from personal experience. I have been both hahaha
  • 3 0
@therealnobody: Keep in mind that's roughly $22hr to work internally at a large bike manufacturing organization, the folks in the shops actually turning the wrench and dealing with triathletes are doing far worse in most cases. I've worked as a service manager in Los Angeles and Brooklyn NY and I made less than that at both shops. To be honest what I've learned about the folks who actually make money in the bike industry is they don't come from a bike background, so working your way up is a waste of time.
  • 6 1
@TalusRider: Jeez dude what is all of that about driving? I currently commute 25 miles each way to earn more money than I was at my previous job, I know what its like to commute. What freedoms am I abusing here that were saved? I think it is totally acceptable to be frustrated by older people giving advice that doesn't work in this era.

Are you okay man, seriously who hurt you?

Looking at the two U.K. roles. I like YT and Hunt wheels but (politely) they can both f*ck right off. ‘Competitive’ and no salary listed at all.
  • 7 1
It is not competitive if it is similar to the US wages Hunt posted on their listing. Its the classic example of a management position with 5 years experience paying what you can make as a 1st year server at a bar and grill
  • 1 1
If it was competitive-they wouldn't be here in the Classifieds. And......if a job didn't fill and DID get to being on classified pages the pay would be listed.
  • 22 0
Wow… one of the sports with most expensive products, yet pays the least. I’d really like to know the inside financials of some of the bike companies. Are they’re margins really so low that they have to keep labour prices below living wages or are they just able to find enough warm bodies to keep the gravy train rolling?
  • 11 0
This is why the industry enrages me. Companies are selling $10 thousand dollar bikes to people who claim 15k "isnt THAAAAT expensive" while helicopter shuttling in Chile. Meanwhile job postings for management positions are on par or below what you would make at a grocery store. It doesn't add up. From the outside it looks like money laundering or something. Somebody is getting fat off these $12/hr mechanics and $14/warranty managers.
  • 3 0
 Exactly.
  • 3 1
The margins aren't massive, but yes there's room to pay the handful (and it's a literal handful) of support staff in NA and Europe a living wage.
  • 21 0
Am I missing something? The Continental "job" is a 12-month full-time UNPAID "development opportunity?" It sounds like 12 months of grunt work/training with no guarantee of a job at the end and no mention of pay for the duration of the program. What the f*ck.
  • 8 0
Sounds like this job is a "squirrel catcher" in trail terms. If you can afford to work a full year without pay, then they'll hire you into a proper position that still pays almost nothing.
  • 4 0
@monsterville & @ryanandrewrogers : Even if this is magically some stipend/per diem survival pay for a year of drinking their flavour of koolaid, they still request a bachelor's degree (prefer a masters hahahaha!) and, if not already, require you to obtain your own legal working status in the USA. But they'll pay to fly you over and find a place...

I don't even have a bachelor's degree, and if I did, I wouldn't (or couldn't) work for free for a year. And the prospect of trying to get working credentials in the USA as a non-resident in this day and age feels scary to me. I moved to France last year and the hoops to do anything are tremendous, especially if you have no help from an employer (which my wife does). So Continental are asking for a turnkey junior sales guy to customize for a potential paycheque a year from now? I suppose someone always needs some sort of job.

I applied for a Job with sram , I sent my cv and asked for the salary amount , they contacted me straight away and were arranging an interview for me the next day , before I agreed I asked for the salary amount as they hadn’t told me ,
but the offered amount was £12k less than I was earning and the same amount I was earning 15 years ago ,
The job they were advertising for should have been at least £10k more for what the role was - taking into account the technicality and huge amount of work , when I stated my current salary they didn’t have the decency to even reply!

Folks not actively looking for a job shouldn’t be shocked by these numbers, I make $80k before OT as a phone/internet guy and at almost 49 years old monkeying around on telephone poles in January has become almost untenable. Been looking for a few weeks on Indeed and Linkdin and most positions that have a transferrable skillset are hiring for $20k less than I currently make, so this is pretty much everywhere unless you’re one of those folks who rides a Yeti, lol.

The biggest issue I've heard about industry jobs (from those within it) is that it's not about the pay. "It's a privilege to work here" so they'll pay you less. It's a desired industry to people are willing to take a pay cut just to work on bike stuff. Not ALL jobs are like that, but many are.
  • 1 0
In reality it's a privilege to have someone like me to work with.

Industrial Designer who applied to SRAM, their wage is an absolute joke, very underpaid compared to other companies working within the same industry… About 15K less than competitors. Also they wanted an interview ASAP, before they even mentioned anything about the earnings…
  • 4 4
Perhaps we should suggest they raise the salaries by raising the retail price of the bikes they sell.

In reality the market is crowded with businesses trying to sell similar products to too few buyers who have little disposable income.
Two solutions:
If there were less companies then there would be less competition so wage demands would stand a better chance of being met as prices could go up.
If there were fewer potential employees looking for work they would have to raise wages to attract staff.

Neither solution is good for us.
  • 3 0
fewer employers trying to find workers in the same pool, means lower salaries. Lots of people to do the job, but only a few places to do it at, doesnt mean they would pay us more....
  • 3 0
Underpaying critical staff is a choice. It's nasty capitalism. In the long run, better paid and trained employees with a sense of intrinsic motivation cost about the same because they solve problems better/faster. But......someone in a C suite has to sign off on paying those folks more. Current corporate culture encourages paying less, more turnover. It's a morally bankrupt approach........but it's also a deliberate choice.

As for number of bike companies, there aren't that many if you peer behind the curtain (Merida/Specialized, Pon owning a crappile of companies, etc.). There will be fewer in the next year or 2. And companies are NOT filling these posts that easily. Anytime a skilled job goes to the Classifieds it's a red flag.

If they did it the other way around there might even be a reason to buy a new bike and they dont get it back broken.
