Rigid and Retro at the Enduro World Series - Video

To celebrate the 200th year of the bicycle, we headed to the home of the Enduro World Series in Wicklow, Ireland, to put an old school bike through a new school trail test!


Piloted by Ric McLaughlin, the man who’s been previewing each stage of the EWS this season, the vintage GT Outpost was slung down the slithering Irish singletrack with reckless abandon. Taken out of his 160mm-shaped comfort zone, watch how Ric got on. Bonus points for anyone who guesses how many punctures were suffered on the day - comment below :-)

 he should be happy he got v-brakes and not really old canti brakes

 looks like maybe only the front is a v-brake? I bet that was someone's upgrade, as I remember v-brakes being a big deal (and a big upgrade) in '96 or so. I'm sure they were out sooner, but that's when I recall seeing them for the first time in my LBS.

 V-brake was an "upgrade" to this bike, rear is a u-brake. But whoever did the upgrade didn't change the cantilever brake levers, so it was more of a downgrade.

 @volvoshredder: Actually I would guess that to be a brake booster on the rear. Quite common in the 90's to add some stiffness.

 @Cdry: Nope. Look at the pics again. It's a u-brake.

 It has a U brake in the rear and V in the front, but levers are from u brake so front brake is kinda weak I presume.

 He definitely needs to shift those brake levers more inboard to enjoy supreme brake performance.

 @VtVolk: I recently rode a bike with cantilever brakes and another with v-brakes. It's hard to truly realize how far we've come with disc brakes (and are spoiled by) until you try the old stuff again.

You don't stop as much as gradually slow yourself down, especially with the cantilevers. Emphasis on gradually.

 @volvoshredder: I'm not sure that bike ever had cantis stock on the front... Don't see a cable hanger!

 The youngsters have no idea what hell it was to race bikes like that. You'd race xc for 2hrs on trails like that getting your ass kicked with no suspension and tiny wheelbase. Then maybe do some observed trials and a dh on the same bike if you were dumb enough to register for it thinking you'd have anything left in the tank on day 2.

 Those were the days... in CO there was even an all around championship for riders who did everything... don't forget dual slalom

 Im 19 now and last year raced New Zealand high school champs on a 1993 Haro extreme I had restored with full xt from the same year and canti's, bike was super fun and made my local xc trails feel alive again. had some old green wall geax tires that felt like balloons too.

 I got my first mtb for xmas in 1993. A month ago, I saw an identical one with all origianl bits on ebay about 10 miles away. Bought it for £15. Now I rode miles on that bike including to school everyday. Used to ride it ten miles just to get to a bomb hole in some woods. I did the school run on the new old bike yesterday. Hit a speed bump and thought I was going to die. I had to book an appointment to stop with all eight fingers grasping the canti brakes. Damn it was fun.

 The Me from back then just wouldn't believe the capability of the bikes we have now. I still remember the intense itchy palms at the bottom of descents, I was always jealous of my mate with his Flexstem, it was so cutting edge. On the plus side, you didn't catch your bars on trees when they were 550mm wide.

 Ahh the good ol' days; 40psi in your 1.9 panaracer smoke and dart combo tires, 3x7 with that all new grip shift thing from some SRAM company noone ever heard of, 50mm of undamped glorious elastomer awesomeness, carbon fiber was still some scary @$# twig stuff the road toads used but oh that first pair of v-brakes dumping you over your stem as long as a baby's arm after grabbing a handful and expecting canti stopping power. We used to tear Pisgah up on steeds as noble as that outpost. Sniff (wipes forlorn tear from eye)

God I almost forgot, anodized everything to show how truly blinged your bike was. We rocked the purple bar ends and all was good.

 V-brakes?! I was expecting canti's! That would have been my worst fear - Vs were a godsend!
2 weeks in Les Arcs on onza canti rear + v front with about 50mm elastomer forks. Now that was arm pump!!

 I'm guessing zero punctures - on that set up, you wouldn't want to go too fast. This is another reason to save some money and get a quality bike from an LBS - It's over two decades old and it probably held up better than any department store bike brand new.

 Still rocking my 97' Tunturi Grunge to work and back, and occasionally he get treated with hard trails. All bikes are fun, it doesn't matter how old are they.

 A GT Outpost very similar to that was my first MTB, though mine had canti brakes and top of the bar thumb shifters. You certainly learn to pick lines on a bike like that.

 I like how they say old school bike on new school trails.........trails in my parts have been around for hundreds of years - they don't change, the bikes do

 this post is pitched as it being a chore to ride that oldschool bike. But with wide bars, short stem, better brake levers and a v-brake on the back as well, that throwback bike would actually still be fun! (don't think there are any short stems available for 1" steer tubes though)

 There are I have 60mm stem and 680mm bar on my old bike...

 I have a 1999 Outpost with basically that set up. It came with an RST fork that I replaced with a Bomber Flylight 100, short stem, wide bars, new rubber and clips. It is a riot to ride!

 Had the pleasure on my stag do a couple of years ago, of riding a 1989 muddy fox courier.... better to remember the good ol days of rigid bikes with canty brakes through "rose tinted specs" .....

 This is exactly why I own a 91 Yeti Pro Fro. So much arm pumping fun and such a challenge compared to my new rigs.

 Not sure if those pedals are that retro. He would at least deserve some DX or V8 pedals that don't crack when you put the power down (or meet a rock or root).

 Noice run, Mate! We are all spoiled with how nice bikes are these days. Gotta spin those old rootsy wheels once in a while to keep the buck-aroo skills sharp.

 I rode my old 98 Cannondale Super V 500 on my favorite trail the other day. I have no desire to do it again.

 How did the stem not break? Pre ‘96, that was a regular problem of mine...and brake pads that melt at ski hill speeds.
