After a long wait for the EWS to begin, we are finally kicking off the series with the first-ever EWS-E race. Riders were faced with six stages across 51km with the 'Power Stage' offering a gruelling climbing challenge to switch things up for the riders. After winning all but the 'Power Stage' Melanie Pugin dominated the first EWS-E race with a huge margin over past EWS champion Tracy Moseley. Completing the women top three was the Swiss rider Nathalie Schneitter. For the men, it was a French one-two after Yannick Pontal just beat out another EWS champion and mountain bike legend, Nicolas Vouilloz. Check out the full results from today's racing below.

There’s a 99% chance that all of these e-MTB racers could destroy 100% of Pinkbike commenters on any kind of bike. These are actual athletes trying a new racing format. So pipe down, losers.
  • 11 2
 Well said.
  • 10 1
Well said man! And more, some of this athletes did EWE yraining yesterday, EWE race today and will train tomorrow for the EWS and will race Sunday! So? What's going wrong? Just' respect!!
  • 17 0
Pfff, like if Nicolas Vouilloz knows how to ride a bicycle!!
  • 9 3
Too all of the eMTB haters out there, it's great to see another new form of 2-wheel racingSmile
  • 11 14
nope sorry. e bike racing is trash. always will be
  • 8 3
of course they are super strong athletes, but do they really need nuclear or carbon power to race? Do you really think it follow the right History direction? I mean wtf man, it does not even bring something more interesting.
  • 4 2
And it is not like if regular enduro were going up by pedaling neither.
So choose your race : going up with a motor or with a lift.
Sad picture of humanity if even strong athletes cannot pedal on race day.

To all you complainers. The ews-e is great for the advancement of e bike tech. You will all benefit when you eventually buy your first ebike
  • 6 2
Yes yes yes exactly! Everything is deferent under race conditions and having people like Nicolas Vouilloz trying to figure out how to find a couple seconds you know whatever brand he is working with is listening and improving their tech as quickly as possible and then the other brands will see that happening and then ramp up their efforts. It’s the 90’s all over again!
  • 14 8
this is bullcrap... it's like when you hear "Formula 1 is so great for you when you will buy your Toyota Corolla"
  • 4 2
@RoadRunner13: This isn't Formula 1. More like production car racing. You can buy any of these bikes yourself from your LBS.
  • 5 2
@RoadRunner13: yeah like when RockShox started testing the black coatings on the World Cup and that never came to consumer forks... or when Norco made the high pivot dh bike for racing that never made its way to consumers.
  • 25 3
Right I forgot we really doing this. Ok then. Without knowing much about it, what are the control measures for inspections? Do they have engineers inspecting the set-ups, power, throttle, capacity etc? Are there a tire size limitations, other tech restrictions? I just feel like this will inevitably turn into a rich teams sport, the F1 mercedes of e-bikes team will find the technology to win and dominate over time. Feel free to educate me if i'm off base.
  • 6 0
Granted the 1km power climb makes me wonder about power limits etc., but otherwise, isn't it just the downhills that are timed, and wouldn't you only (99%) be using the electric power assist on the uphills that aren't timed? Granted I don't have an e-bike, but they seem to be growing in popularity, so this is kind of like a showcase to show what you can do on them and how much further you can go (if you carry 2 spare batteries...)?
  • 5 5
@trillot: so do they stand on pegs for the downhill or pedal? haha
Assisted pedaling is still a factor for downhill.
  • 2 2
Bang on. That's my worry as well. Any motorsport turns out to be mega expensive. It's not to say the racers aren't full of talent but it does mean that that money makes a huge difference as to who can be competitive
  • 2 1
If EWS isn't giving out much $ for wins then there isn't much an incentive to invest heavily like there is F1. Plus, having a sweet motor isn't going to make you go downhill faster or carve turns with savagery.
  • 3 0
@trillot: if you’ve ever raced enduro before you’d know most stages have some serious pedally sections/uphill. It’s in these sections where very fit riders can make up a good chunk of time. I would assume (don’t know) that an e-race would choose stages with even more of these sections, otherwise yes, you’d just be racing 50 lb bikes downhill. Secondly... though the translations aren’t timed, some of the climbs can be nasty as f*ck and really drain what little energy you have after giving it all you have on the stages. So, yes, more powerful/efficient e bikes could give a serious advantage.
  • 3 0
@trillot: technical slow trails with switchbacks.. 1 e-pedal stroke out of the corner is enough.. Not all are berms and high speed
  • 1 0
@trillot: so basically future issues for eMtb's will be a lack of extra spare battery storage then?! Water bottles be damned.
  • 1 0
@krazieghost: the more people the more money they will invest
  • 2 0
@krazieghost: I've only had 2 rides on an ebike, but due to the top speed limit once you hit it you have to work really, really hard to maintain it going down.

Pedalling up was crazy and actually enjoyable.
  • 55 35
I see moto outdoors has a new format
  • 20 4
Are some of you negative commenters not noticing the names of true legends of the sport here? Who here has the credentials to attack something that Mosely and Vouilloz are doing?
  • 9 0
Pretty cool that Vouilloz won the first ever World Cup way back in 1993 at 16 years old, finished 2nd in the first ever EWS in 2013 after being retired for years, and now 2nd in the first ever EWS e bike race.

I’ve actually done a proper E-bike race. It was run with the same rules as moto with a 1 hour time limit plus two laps. Honestly, it felt just like a regular xc race. We were just going a bit faster than would be possible on a regular bike. It wasn’t easier by any measure.

That being said there are some serious tech issues that keep this sport from being fair. We need testing at all levels to ensure motors are actually at spec. Also, the difference in motor manufacturers, not bike frames, is a huge difference. An extra 10nm torque and a few support percentage makes a massive difference in a race situation right now.

If we can achieve standardization in what makes a race machine, the way moto has with classes like 250 or 450, and have the ability to enforce those rules then this sport will start to lose its bad rep. But until then, you really can’t declare a tru winner with any conviction.

That being said, this sport has a lot of potential. If these issues can be sorted, it might turn into something truely different and fun!
  • 1 0
saying that, I think the Lapierre that Vouilloz and Pontal are on only has like 30nm but is way lighter than most eebs, its has some different really small motor.
  • 2 0
@Timenator: idk what bike they chose to ride. I know that brand makes several different options ranging from the light weight one you mentioned to one of the most powerful out there. I’d like to see the exact bike these top guys were on.
  • 10 0
Haven't seen Tracey Mosley's name in anything for a while!
  • 9 0
Along with Wildhaber, Pugin, Vouilloz, loads of big names right up there. Is Sabrina Jonnier still competing in this discipline? In DH racing she used to be right up against T-Mo!
  • 12 2
 More like Plugin today though
  • 1 0
@vinay: Not René Wlidhaber though Wink
  • 1 0
 Nico Lau too
  • 1 0
@sebevoltage: Oops, seems like I picked the other Pugin too. It is Floriane who's got a lot of titles so it is was her name in the back of my head.

@j-t-g: Ah, after all these years I finally get where the Pinkbike term "acoustic" bike comes from. "Acoustic" as in the type of instruments artists used to play in the MTV Unplugged series. Damn I'm slow, understanding the PB lingo...
  • 9 2
@vinay: I imagine bike companies sponsored these legends to help promote ebikes to older age groups....kind of like the viagra of mountain biking.
  • 5 2
 @mtnrush666: Haha I love it...V-bikes
  • 2 0
@mtnrush666: Yeah, could be. Loads of current (in unassisted competition) athletes have access to e-bikes and use them for training. So they are already familiar with them. Would actually be cool to see them in the same e-bike race along with the "e-bike specialists". To see what the difference would be like. I recall Wyn Masters did that last year but I don't recall how high he placed and how serious he was about it. Personally I'd say that Vouilloz and T-Mo would at the very least be able to get a decent ranking, but that's just my guess.
  • 1 0
@vinay: www.dictionary.com/browse/acoustic. Don't let the PB comment lingo fool you...the term acoustic pertains to sound and has no relevance to "bikes" vs. "e-bikes".
  • 9 1
Well done t-mo !!! And respect to Melanie for being so consistent and faster !!
  • 8 0
Nico still on top, shame on you youngins
  • 17 12
Lots of people getting annoyed here. It's a new race format - don't like it don't comment, I doubt the riders could care less about what these people think. At least it's some racing for the first time in about a year.
  • 3 0
I did the math, they only did 1944m of pedal climbing, I've done 2000m on my one battery, so I'm not really sure why they need 3, seems a bit excessive, 2 would be more than enough unless they're running small batteries to save weight
  • 5 0
Pinkbike, is there any plan to do an article showing how some of the racers set up their ebikes? Would be curious to see!

Thanks!
  • 3 0
Is 3 batteries not a bit generous? Part of the competition is meant to be the strategic use of battery power vs human power, no? I have done a few rides with 2000 meters climbing on ebikes and it was a fun challenge thinking about power consumption over the ride. It also was a huge learning experience for how much of a work out you can actually get on an ebike when you are not just boosting until your battery is dead.

eMTBs, fine, got no big problem with them. competitive eMTB races? I really don't get the point. neither a true moto sport or a true athletic sport, a diluted version of both.

Your ignorance is noticed. As with every other emtb hater you haven’t tryed it for yourself. It’s as athletic as riding a normal bike, but the boring parts becomes more fun.
It’s almost exclusively xc riders who are hating on emtb for all xc riders are, are endurance riders that don’t need bike handling skills. So wen they now are being passed by emtb riders on the uphill, off course they get butt hurt.

If you have a look at the race documents, you can see that the stage is actually 270m long, 71m up and 0m down.
