I raced the masters Andorra when I was in the 1st year you could (age 29, 30 by end of year), I had thought that my age would give me an advantage and was swiftly brought back to reality when I got absolutely smoked by the 55-59 category, and I really mean smoked.
Masters World Champs is an amateur-only event. That isn't sarcasm, it's the rules, so you won't see Minnaar there any time soon. I think you aren't allowed to have raced as a pro for a full year. In fact I think that's why Nigel Page got his title stripped a few years ago (although I'm not 100% on that!)
Well done to the Brits racing. Big Al, you legend. Taking home gold. The guys never seems to slow down.
Special thanks to George Thompson (making up the numbers podcast) for keeping us vets who didn't make it out updated on Instagram of all the fun you boys were having out there. Looked like some holiday.
He smoked us vets at national Champs and was encouraged to do world masters there.
Looks like the boys had an awesome time and big Al also took home gold which is awesome.
Listy managing a 2nd too which is so good.
@betsie: yeah it was flippin mint! Will quali'd 4th, so it was absolutely mega to see him bring the win home. 4 golds for us brits, way to go! I was more stoked for the boys than myself! Couple of the other Brit lasses got bronze medals too which was cool, although really sad for Brittany Littlewood as she was on for the win in her cat but got taken out by the massive dust piles in the final.
@DoubleCrownAddict: yeah first time I've met her, and she is such a professional, and a lovely lady. Total inspiration to us folk in our early 40s - if I can set a time like hers when I'm her age, I'll be quite happy (I set the FTD in the women's field)!
Pink bike, you suck and have clearly no care or passion for those that do in this sport!! Absolute shite reporting as usual, from a group that clearly have never raced and no respect for any masters. Cant wait to hear an in depth report on crap bit of kit you you've been sent.
Chill out James, Pinkbike can't be everywhere and at least your seeing the results. From the sounds of it you know a website that is doing a better job and will be using them from now on.
@kona83coxy: I'm chill cheers. I just don't understand why there is a blanket ban on support or coverage for anyone over 35. I have stated it before to them about the EWS, national championships etc. I think it is narrow minded and insulting to those that crack on.
Talk about lazy reporting. How about checking out a few of the top finisher's instagrams for some photos and insights from the riders themselves.. that wouldn't have been too difficult would it? Hell, you could even have sent those riders some messages for extra comments if you really wanted. Ah but no, you've never heard of anyone at this race, so it can't be important can it, of course not. Disappointing. Most of the people spending the money in MTB are these age groups, effectively they pay your wages Pinkbike "reporters".
Anyone got a link so we can check the course and some of the action. Coming up dry om youtube etc. Well done to all the riders u are all inspirational to us. At age 48 I still think im faster than most groms, at least going downhill.
Please pinkbike - an interview with Georges Bigoni and Georvanna Bonazzi. How do they train? How do they avoid injury? How often do they ride? Who with? When did Georges start riding DH (his fifties?). So many questions……
Tinker is still a beast! Dude races ultra endurance still :o Can't even begin to imagine what 24Hrs on the bike must feels like. I did 3Hrs @ a local trail earlier today and my legs are still solid & burning LoL.
I still find it hard to believe that 1 of the people who inspired me to get on a MTB ~30yrs ago is still competing! Between Tinker & Hans, I have no excuses to not ride.
@billreilly: I know that, coño. I'm just saying why are we not seeing that all over Pinkbike or at least the freaking results posted? What's that about? Celebrate the legend.
I was wondering if there will be a reply from New Jersey about his results, seems like he is not forgotten in his old home! He is still fast as always, raced that on a borrowed bike as he hasnt owned DH bike for years now!
World champs are not about the fastest/best in the world as they are country and not team based, some riders at world champs would never go to a UCI event.
Now we have that one sorted, let's move on to world masters... This is world masters which is about the fastest non elite, non-professional riders in the world, over 30. (That can get to the race). There is qualification criteria to race, you can't just retire from world cups then the next year pitch up to world masters, you gotta leave it a year.
We get to race on the same day as some of the fastest youngsters in the world in the UK at nationals and national champs, even at regional races too, so we know where we are against those boys if that's what we want to know.
The rest is all about having fun at a race when you are over 30. Travelling to other countries and having a blast racing.
What is the point of these races when they don't have the fastest people racing, is it more like an amateur championship with no ex professionals allowed?
It’s for fun and pride for people who used to compete. Also it’s not true that no ex professionals are allowed. Will longden used to race dh for england for a long time and has a lot of history with dh racing. Guido tshcugg as well used to ride for a successful german mtb magazine and was a strong and skillfull rider. It might not have a point for you but these kind of things can help a lot with mental health for older people and are justba whole lot of fun.
First 2 in the men’s 45-49 are former pros and Will is still a team manager. Don’t immediately recognize anyone else but I bet there are more then a few more in there too. Lots of lower level pros who go for a masters world championship just to have a WC jersey. I am looking forward to dominating the 70-74 when I get there
Racers show up and Race. A lot of the fastest riders don't race. Ex-pros are welcome. There are some older racers who are dead-serious about racing and have the time and money to fund their pursuits. They beat me regularly.
Thats so cool to think those of use in our 30s still have another 20+ of having no excuses for going slow! Let's go!
I think you aren't allowed to have raced as a pro for a full year.

You have to have no uci points from the current/previous season

I know of one female rider who did BOTH DH and XC races, top 5 in DH and Top 10 in XC not bad IMO!
Anyone else do both DH & XC?
I still find it hard to believe that 1 of the people who inspired me to get on a MTB ~30yrs ago is still competing! Between Tinker & Hans, I have no excuses to not ride.
