Red Bull Denied Drink Exclusivity on the Podium and Hot Seat in Maribor

Apr 27, 2019
by Ed Spratt
Nervous moments on the hot seat for the two old team mates.

In two press releases sent out by the UCI this morning, it was revealed that Red Bull wants to exclude other drinks from featuring on the DH podium and hot seat.

The ban, if put in place, would only allow riders to appear to be drinking either Red Bull or a drink from a Red Bull bottle. With plenty of riders sponsored by other energy drink brands, this brings up plenty of issues and it seems like this created quite a strong discussion in the team managers meeting yesterday.

This will not be enforced in Maribor because of its late announcement and what seems like a backlash from team managers. Although not being set in place for the first round it does look like something will be in place for Fort William in June, what this will mean for riders not sponsored by Red Bull is not yet known.

bigquotes"Following the discussion at the team managers meeting yesterday we are mindful of the short notice in announcing Red Bull drinks exclusivity on the podium and hot seat and the situation that this leaves a number of riders in, so we will not enforce the request for Red Bull - only drinks/bottles on the hot seat and podium this weekend.

We will continue to work with Red Bull following this event to find a solution for the rest of the season, which we will communicate to you as early as possible before the next round in Fort William.

In the meantime, we would remind you that the partnership with Red Bull and Red Bull Media House is continuing to enable us to improve and grow the UCI Mercedes Benz World Cup series and your understanding of their marketing and sponsorship needs would be appreciated."
Simon Burney, UCI Mountain Bike Sport Coordinator

Following the news this morning we reached out to the UCI for further details about the decision and what effect this will have on riders and future events. A Spokesperson for the UCI told Pinkbike:

bigquotes“It has been part of the agreement between Red Bull Media House and the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced publicly back in October. It concerns only energy drinks on the hot seat and podium since bringing a can at these places is considered as a form of product placement.

Other energy drinks/drinks brands can partner with riders and be displayed on the riders’ outfits. The information was shared at the team managers meeting and as a result of some teams letting us know that this would cause some riders an issue with their existing sponsorship agreements we took the decision to work on a solution that will hopefully be acceptable to all parties.

The intention is to keep unbranded (UCI World Cup) bottles always available at the podium/hot seat for riders who have other partners whilst making Red Bull available. Champagne will still be given on the podiums. The agreement applies for all the UCI Worlds Cup formats, DHI, XCO and XCC.”

@KondziuNS: I think Red Bull is fantastic for the support they are giving to the sport of MTB and all other sports. MTB wouldn’t be what it is today if not them. We should be thankful. A way to show thankfulness is to buy their drink which I personally love for the taste and stimulating properties. It makes my car trips safer. Whenever I get sleepy I open one and I am fresh. I actually wish more people would drink red bull, in sane dosages off course. It is not a hydrating product, but definitely has its place.

I love Redbull, have 3 in the fridge, will open one now. Cheers guys!

I love Redbull for not being misogynists like Monster or racists like Rockstar. Red Bull is the best energy drink if you ever need one. They sponsor worlds best Athletes. Like Aaron Gein or Emily Batty or Emil Johansson, Szymon Godziek, Danny Macaskill, Loic Bruni and Many more. Redbull Rampage has put gravity MTB on the map of general public. Nobody can deny how great Red Bull is.
  • 67 7
@WAKIdesigns: I can and will deny it.This 1990’s/old school monopoly business strategy might hurt a lot of athletes in an industry that’s already so cheap towards them.Guess how many sponsors could decide to pull out their sponsorship deals for next year if they get even less exposure? The world isnt just one flavour and forcing people to buy YOUR flavour is such an outdated way to do things. When you make the best product out there you dont worry so much about your competition , you embrace It cause it helps making your stuff look that much better..If your product sucks, you revert to dumb crap like this.

Btw , dont be a fool, I guarantee you that right our of the gate, RedBull never intended to support or help promoting our sport. You make it sounds like they’re practically heroes for sponsoring athletes. They saw a business opportunity to make money and this shows exactly this.To them, its always been, and will always be about making MORE money.
  • 6 4
@tuumbaq: it's business.if the other brands dump money into the event, then they too can get some eyeballs on the podium and elsewhere. This is effectively what the last sentence of Simon Burney's statement is conveying.

I doubt the other brands will dump their supported riders because of this. There are many other ways of pushing a brand.
  • 1 0
 @tuumbaq: Exactly This.
  • 13 3
 @tuumbaq: I agree with statement 100%.
However; ironically despite redbulls intentions, this sport owes alot of its growth and development to the Money redbull has thrown in. This kind of thing isnt really new. Especially with redbull and mountainbiking. Take a look at Rampage 2016. There was a big pushback from the riders, hence the restructure to the event in 2017.
Reality is that ironically I think by doing this bold move, they will actually hinder what they are in turn trying to do. Redbull NOT trying to pull this stunt gives off the concept of how big redbull is. Personally, if I were to purchase an energy drink (once or twice a year) i would reach for a redbull. Why? Because i prefer the serving size, and the flavors. Not to mention I guarentee every single up and coming athlete would die to wear the redbull logo. It's a status symbol among athletes today.
@Redbull, if you are reading this... I emplore you; bold move... But this has spoiled little brat Instagram model written all over it. You literally already have the market by the... errrm... bulls.
This move.... it's just sad, and to be quite frank... your embarrassing yourselves, and in turn the UCI and its affiliates.

@jomacba: Wearing a Redbull helmet is synonymous with winning an Olympic medal. Redbull has 2 Formula 1 teams, they sent a man to the edge of space in some of the most expensive ways possible. This is what I relate to when I think of RB. What do I see when I think of Monster Energy? A porn star in moto boots, moto helmet and strings, getting out of a giant truck driven by some fat, white trash dude. What do I expect when drinking redbull? An effect of two coffees lasting double as long. What do I expect from drinking Monster? A fricking heart attack?

@WAKIdesigns: in moderate amounts beer has health benefits. Red bull has none in any amount
  • 6 5
@won-sean-animal-chin: link to research paper please hahahha. Moderate amounts. That’s even less likely!
  • 1 0
Imagine the weather is so hot and all you got is Red Bull.
  • 10 9
@won-sean-animal-chin: let’s take wine for example. They say it has health benefits in moderate amounts. All of them are found in grapes before they become a wine... so if I were to follow such logic I could say Redbull has certain health benefits because it contains caffeine which (according to dumb sources like Men’s health) has health benefits in moderate amounts spread over the course of the day.

The only thing I am saying is... these racers engage in activities with dire consequences in case of a crash - broken bones, ripped joints, concussions, if not death. Many of them get drunk for reals quite often. The potential health risks of drinking 2 Red Bulls on a race day in total, are rather slim compared to everything else they are doing. All this with rather shitty career choice in case of majority of them. Only the best racers with best negotiation and entrepreneurial skills will make good living. The rest will have a hard time starting a job career at 35-40 where regular folks start at 20-25. All with a baggage on injuries, brain injuries being possibly the worst.

And I would not write a poem in defense of a stimulating soda (which has more benefits than 99% of sodas like Fanta or Dr.Pepper) since they dont need any support. The issue here has nothing to do with harm that highly sugared soda does (scientists claim it is the sugar that is the no1 risk component in Redbull, while one with the dietary sweeteners, ironically is the worst) the issue is that there is no good replacement as the main sponsor stepping forward. MTB, particularly gravity discplines, is nothing more to sponsors than content for commercials. You can’t earn much money on it. Participation rate among general public is extremely low, viewer numbers are virtual zero, compares to other sports.

What MTB is to Redbull is what rain forest is to Starbucks. A message to general public rather than reaching for the pockets of participants: “we support cool sports”.

Perspective...

@tuumbaq: most energy drinks are the same or close to the same so stuff like sponsoring people for interesting sports is a good way of getting your name out there. How are they supposed to stay in business selling anything other than their Flavor. If they are paying for everything I don’t see why they can’t have some rules on the podium. You can hate corporate sponsors all you want but you can’t deny what red bull has done for extreme sports. If I’m going to buy an energy drink I prefer it supports cool stuff.
  • 2 0
@won-sean-animal-chin: beer does not have health benefits over a healthy diet and not drinking. Study’s have found beer to have more health benefits over other alcoholic beverages but all alcoholic beverages are a poison and have negative impacts on your body.
  • 2 1
@bohns1: hah, present yourself well, exactly. Go around pits on a world cup or talk to some pro roadies. You’ll see that exactly this lies at the base of the issue. I know true stories of athletes getting depressed as fuk as the contract ends and nobody wants them, and having a hard time digging themselves out of the hole. Some have never done anything else than the sport they have been doing, have barely finished high school. The only people they have contact with are family, team, former team members and a few people on organized group rides. Some are genuinely socially handicapped.

As to Monster girls, I take it as an offense to my own intellect and ability to control my own balls. Then I can talk about what it does to women collectively

Being in position of sitting behind the screen and living up to nothing in athletic world, sucking up live TV for free, your loyalty to anyone is worth NOTHING.

@wildedge586: Yes off course! You are off for a Rocky Road though
  • 1 0
Very true, which is my guess why they did this, It's harder to sell sugary drinks, the money's not coming in like it use too, they spend a ton on these events and they don't want competition riding on their coverage. Now if the coverage was terrible, and they had a monopoly, that would be bad, but I think it's safe to say the coverage is better then it's ever been before... so I'm all for it. Let them kick out the competition as long they keep doing a good job. Consider the alternative, where Redbull is tired of losing money on events, and pulls out entirely.
  • 1 0
@mark4444: I seriously doubt Redbull is hurting for cash. They run a Formula 1 team and a MotoGP team. Redbull is more of a marketing company, they don't really make anything in the traditional sense. If anything, I'd say the audience and the exposure is growing for mtb, and they dont want to be promoting their competition. For example, Mercedes coming on board is a big sign that other companies want to put money in this sport.

"I love Redbull for not being misogynists like Monster or racists like Rockstar."
Mateschitz, the Austrian multi-billionaire behind the Company is much worse! The athlete he most likely invested most money in, Felix Baumgartner, is openly supporting the far-right FPÖ Party with the head of the party being tied with neo-nacists. Denying global warming, questioning Democracy, fighting "fake news" Media the Was Trump does, etc. All of this is on his agenda and it's really worrysome how he is deliberately influencing the peoples believes in Austria in a very concerning way towards intolerance, conspiracy theories, etc.
  • 4 1
@MatthewCarpenter: except Red Bull isn’t openly supporting such attitudes, leading people to believe that it is cool.
When I see Monster Energy commercial vibe I have an impression that their target group are white trash wankers. Likely racists, homophobes, owners of huge trucks, polluting the planet etc. this is the appeal I get when seeing monster. I also see awesome athletes riding for them, but the general vibe smells of macho BS.

Back to Red Bull, heh, with people with such power there is literally nothing that you could say about CEO that could surprise me. Nazis, pedophilia, rape, in these circles anything is possible.

I can however separate God from Religion. Nobody can be responsible for what boss or the fans do. Otherwise you get into idiotic situations like people advocating boycotting Taylor Swift, calling her the Icon of American Alt-Right because they officially expressed huge admiration for her on several
Occasions.

Same happens now with J Peterson. Morons calling him a poster boi of alt right, or climate change deniers. People actually tell him to stop giving convenient ideas to “evil circles” as he criticizes the left.

Boycotting Michael Jackson songs? Movies with Kevin Spacey? Hah! my daughter is singing ”I believe I can fly” - should I shut her up saying it’s a song by a man who raped teenagers and peed on them?

@alexhyland: I've heard the same thing happens in F1, where if they drank that stuff it would have negative outcomes due to the duration of the race and the effectiveness of the caffeine for only short periods, with a sugar crash to finish. Oh and it works as a diuretic too so any sustained period of competition would need breaks. At the end of a comp it's different and down to preference.  Right! Race organizers will lose big in the end cause other sponsors will just move along. Then racers lose out next.

Nobody who’s sponsored by an energy drink does it out of choice. They do it to fund their riding/racing.

Redbull execs must be feeling a tightening or theres a new person in an exec position trying to overplay his hand. Either way its a panic move from Redbull to blind us from other brands.
  • 8 0
Great point! Does Redbull really think that exclusivity on an MTB podium is worth the pissing match? I would have thought the potential to lose exposure on the MX/SX scene to Monster would be a bigger market share to worry about than MTB...
  • 22 0
Tough debate this... You can't deny that Redbull is probably the biggest facilitator in the sport. But I think this is a step too far. Let the sport be the sport, give companies enough space to support who they want, give riders enough freedom to work with companies they favour, rather than forcing everything to be "Redbulled"

Seriously, those dickheads at the UCI are being controlled by RB. We need to stand up against this. This is not in the best interest of the sport. No sponsor should have the power to simply enforce such rules all by themselves. It's ridiciulous how much power they already have and they keep gaining more and more each year. This is no longer the UCI WC but rather the RB WC. Time for someone to finally start a new series!
  • 4 1
Yea great idea. Get rid of redbull, because there are so many other outlets lining up to broadcast these races right? Like what they are doing or not, they are the reason right now that you get to watch these races.
  • 4 1
@sino428: I'd rather have broadcast as spotty and limited as EWS and proper sponsors than this circus game. But free, cheap and moral highground don't go along
  • 2 0
@wildedge586: moral high ground? Let’s not go overboard here. All we are talking about is some exclusive advertising rights, which are commonplace in all sports broadcasts.
  • 2 0
 @sino428:
Advertising rights are one thing. This directly impacts the riders sponsors though. They can advertise on stream all they want, but this has direct impact on an athletes business relations and it is nothing but a power move in order to strongarm the competition away from athletes and therefore limit their access to the sport as a whole, resulting in a RB monopoly in dh. What's next? You can't wear non RB sanctioned clothing sponsors on the podium anymore? Mandatory RB caps for all riders even if they're sponsored by a competitor?
I get it,i don't like the tinfoil hats either, but given RBs track record with questionable ideas which solely benefited themselves and not the sport,i think the UCI should think before simply granting such rights to a sponsor.
For comparison, this is kinda like the Reebok deal the UFC made a couple years ago, which f*cked fighters out of their (valuable) contracts in order to give Reebok a monopoly and more money to the UFC (UCI in this case). Of course that was magnitudes bigger, but the principle still applies.

@Loki87: you said it yourself, your comment is tinfoil hat stuff. You should have realized that and stopped there. And again, this isn’t some total ban on advertising another brands products. It is one spot, on the hot seat and poduim. A place where quite frankly most riders are never going to be anyway. I get that other companies might be pissed but Redbull is the ones paying the rights fees and getting these other company’s riders in front of the massive audience in the first place. If another company changes its contract with a rider simply because they can’t have the can on the podium the f*ck that company, not Redbull.
  • 14 1
 What a bunch of bull...
The stuff is poison anyway, why would any serious athlete use that stuff?
  • 10 1
I reckon they don't, i think they fill up red bull cans with gatorade or something.
  • 25 1
 @freeriderayward: or you know... water
  • 5 0
Pretty well known that they supply water in red bull cans to events for the competitors/musicians etc. You can but the monster version on eBay (www.ebay.com/itm/monster-tour-water-/253447438969)
  • 2 0
@Roobar: yea through a friend of a friend who works there, I got to visit the headquarters of a well known race team sponsored by Monster. They have pallets of monster ‘races waters’ as they call them. Just monster cans filled with water.
  • 11 12
Redbull isnt bad for you. Its Carbonated Water, Sucrose, Glucose, Citric Acid, Taurine, Sodium Bicarbonate, Magnesium Carbonate, Caffeine, Niacinamide, Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine HCI, Vitamin B12, Pretty sure thats sugar, vitamins, minerals and about as much caffiene as a 1.5 cup of coffee
  • 3 1
@Grosey: Don’t listen to this guy, he is clearly the executive from Red Bull trying to get only their drinks on the hot seat and podium!!
  • 1 0
@Grosey: Are you saying that it is good for you?
  • 4 3
@aljoburr: good for you? No probably not. But in normal doses it’s also not bad for you either. No worse than most other soft drinks really. There are a lot worse things people eat and drink daily. Junk food, fast food, even just meat and dairy in general, etc are all probably just as harmful to your overall health as any energy drink is as long as your not overdoing it.
  • 1 1
@Grosey: hmn what? Are you actually drink coffee or is that some Starbucks shit?
  • 4 1
@sino428: no soft drinks are good for you
  • 1 0
@Mntneer: I agree, just pointing out that Redbull really is no worse than all the other shit people don’t think twice about drinking.
  • 2 5
@Grosey: People have died from drinking multiple cans in one sitting, I could feel my heart wanting to quit after drinking 3 small cans. They're horrible for you
  • 1 0
@src248: I was going to ask why anyone would want to drink several small cans, but then I realized there’s a reason they sell the tall boys.

Man just one of the small cans is enough to give me the shaky hands and sweats. I’m a fairly decent sized human too, at 6’3 and 225ish pounds. Maybe it’s just me on this but I’m pretty sure you should be good on just one can lol
  • 1 0
@Hardtailhooligan: If you must know I was pouring them into a cup to mix flavors. A lot of the deaths have been underage people drinking them as an alternative to alcohol to get a kind of buzz
  • 1 0
@src248: That’s fair enough lol. I’m not a doctor so my opinion is pretty moot anyhow. Jeez kids these days are really doing that? I miss the old days when kids just smoked some pot haha
  • 1 0
@Hardtailhooligan: It's just the world most popular drug. Like other drugs if you build a tolerance to it you need more to have the same effect.
  • 2 0
@djm35: That’s on me, I never look at caffeine like it’s a drug so I didn’t even consider that. If you can’t tell I don’t drink coffee or energy drinks that often lol. Gooooood ol H2O is the way to go!
  • 9 0
I am thankful for redbull live stream...but this and the three minute rule is just pathetic and borderline childish actually. Ironically these rulings make me want to buy any other brand but redbull. In fact..I think I am gonna go to the shops now and buy a monster
  • 11 0
Sorry Redbull but hearing stuff like this makes me really not want to support you as a company.
  • 7 0
All riders will now have to change their middle name to Redbull or be called' unknown rider' during all broadcasts.
"And Matt Redbull Walker takes the hotseat beating an unknown rider by 1.2seconds,we'll have to see what Loris Redbull Vergier can do at the first split"
  • 2 0
Dont give them good ideas, if you have to make it a bad idea?
  • 2 0
@aljoburr: Never half ass two things.....whole ass one thing.
  • 10 3
I’ll play devils advocate here. Redbull pays a lot of money for the rights and the expense of broadcasting these events. And the camera shots of the podium are essentially prime advertising real estate within the broadcast. Is it really that unreasonable that Redbull does not want their direct competition to benefit from that free advertising space that Redbull has paid for? It’s not like they are banning riders from wearing other composure logos on camera. Riders can still wear what they want, hold their helmet up to the camera etc. They just don’t want the competition to benefit from one of the most prime spots on the broadcast.

That’s not unreasonable is actually pretty standard procedure in most sports where a league or event has a title sponsor of some sort. In the NBA players are sponsored by all kinds of sports drink companies, but they aren’t allowed to drink out of anything other than Gatorade cups during games. Same with the NCAA basketball tournament. Doesn’t matter if the schools have individual deals with other drink companies, the tournament is sponsored by Coca Cola, so only Powerade cups are allowed on camera. The NFL even fines players for wearing Beats headphones on field before games bevause the league has a sponsorship with Bose.

So let’s all stop acting like Redbull is the f*cking devil here. If you protested every company that did business like this you probably be sitting in an empty house starving right now.
  • 4 1
I appreciate and understand all of that. Don't Care! Stupid is stupid, and this is most assuredly stupid!
  • 1 1
Do they sponsor it? Sure. Do they own it? No! I appreciate all the money and whatnot that RB puts into it, with the live stream and such, but this is fascist crap. At the Yeti/Fox Presented by Shimano enduro race series, racers can ride something other than a Yeti, or use an Eagle drivetrain, say.
  • 2 1
Did they pay for exclusivity. See the other contracts normally include that. Bose is the official headphones of NFL. They paid for that right, same with all the other examples. That would be more like ESPN saying you can only show ESPN drink when they paid for rights to broadcast. If red bull wants to become the official drink of World Cup pay more money sure they can pull that.
  • 2 0
Well considering the statement from the UCI that says...

“It has been part of the agreement between Red Bull Media House and the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced publicly back in October”

I would think think that yes, they did pay for the exclusivity.
  • 2 0
@mtbikeaddict: fascist? Please stop. It’s a basic sports sponsorship/advertising agreement. And do they own it? Yes they own the broadcast which gives them control over things like product placement. Just like riders in the enduro series can ride whatever hikes they want, riders in the WC can rep and drink whatever drink they want. They just can’t do it on the podium. I’m sure yeti/fox has some exclusivity too, in terms of main signage, etc. Those race organizers would certainly not SRAM or some other company start having up huge banners and ads all over the place. I’m sure yeti/fox get preferential treatment there.
  • 1 1
You're right. The NFL is the real devil.
  • 11 2
 All for the money...fuck RB
  • 6 1
riders should avoid the UCI HOT SEAT and Podium, and craete their own spot to gather for a couple rounds and see how that goes RB. This is a stupid request and hopefully crashes down in a flaming ball of wings. I will quit watching DH live feed if it comes to this.....
  • 3 1
I was thinking the same. Be good if non redbull riders boycott the podium and hot seat to see if the uci like that.
  • 7 0
I Keep hearing bad things about Redbull, protecting their own interests or maybe just Greed?
  • 4 0
Who coming up with these ideas at red bull. Do they not realise that we all recognise the brand, know the drink, and know if other drinks already?? All this does is have a negative effect on red bulls image. They don’t sell more product that’s for sure, and isn’t that the goal, to sell more drinks??
  • 5 0
Will there be a boycott of the hot seat??
Will champagne be given out on the podium anymore? Did the UCI sell their soul to the devil?
Does Beelzebub have wiings?
  • 9 3
3 mins for commentary on track walk edits. Now this. There is such a thing as over sponsorship.

 This basically sums it up:
"In the meantime, we would remind you that the partnership with Red Bull and Red Bull Media House is continuing to enable us to improve and grow the UCI Mercedes Benz World Cup series and your understanding of their marketing and sponsorship needs would be appreciated."(and my need to get that unreported 'bonus')
—Simon Burney appears to be getting paid off by RedBull
  • 6 0
I think it should be mandatory that podium seat should be a Mercedes. That makes way more sense.
  • 6 0
Will the UCI also be refusing entry to anyone not arriving in a Nissan Navara with a Mercedes badge?
  • 3 0
Politics eventually ruin everything. WE DON’T LIKE THIS SHIT UCI. If there’s enough of this sort of thing eventually it won’t be real riders watching anymore. We will be waiting for live streams of Pro GRT, DHSE etc. on websites from independent companies. Don’t f*ck with this athletes RedBullshit
  • 2 1
not politics, the MONEY, and more MONEY....
  • 3 0
Uci should ban the false advertising that elite riders would drink that shit, Bollocks to this pantomime that tries to associate something so harmful to one's health with the pinnacle of the sport. If a rider wants to drink water, tea, coffee, squash, beer, this toxic shit, it shouldn't be masqueraded as something else
  • 2 1
Tell that too the people that buy the Shit that makes them millions, but the riders that get payed not to drink the stuff is not much better, However if they would pay me to wear a stupid helmet I would probably take the money, but that is not going to happen!
  • 1 0
The riders are just as bad... youth idols like Macaskill and Wibmer even that pretend they drink it all the time, so that kids around the world would think it’s cool to drink Red Bull, maybe even think it will help them become mtb hero themselves one day...
  • 1 0
@PaperbackRider: yeah it’s pretty nasty when you think about it. Sugar is probably as big of a cancer causer as cigarettes, but you wouldn’t see pro riders puffin darts after a race run in this day and age. I avoid pop and energy drinks, that shit is a plague
  • 3 0
We're not that far away from motorsports it seems. Now i want to hear all about how the Redbull Shimano Fox MRP KMC Enve Cushcore Renthal Muc-off WTB Ergon Mitsubishi Tide Hershey's mountain bike rode down the hill during qualifying...
  • 3 0
Sometimes in really miss freecaster. Yes the stream was shit sometimes, but at least they showed DH in its raw beauty, including more riders and excluding pointless finishline Interviews while they race is still on. How did they do it anyway without the mega budget?
  • 4 1
I really appreciate what RB have done for the live stream.
And making warner a professional commentator which compliments the broadcast (freecaster he was drunk).

I can understand they might not want monster/relentless cans being drunk on the podium.

They should allow any plain containers of any kind. Branded bike bottles (just not competitors cans you can buy).

They shouldn’t force non RB athletes to hold RB cans / RB branded items though, as that sucks and just wouldn’t work.

The riders put on their monster caps. And have sponsors all over their clothes (to pay their bills).
So wouldn’t need to drink a monster can filled with water right then.

Again truly grateful for what RB do for our / other sports.

P.S I can drink the stuff (it’s ok and maybe goodfor driving), but don’t often at all.
I can’t stomach monster / relentless at all.
  • 2 0
 This matches my thoughts.

Let them have plain bottles, but don’t force athletes to have drinks/bottles from their sponsors competitor.
  • 1 1
@lewiscraik: in trying to force athletes, RB are probably forcing them into breaching contract with their own energy sponsors. Unless they plan to buy out every athlete from Monster etc, that's a f*cking immoral thing to do as it's messing with people's livelihoods.

Interestingly, when Nitro Circus got their big investment to grow the brand, budget was built into the deal so the athletes could all get OUT of their RB contracts.....

Maybe some people RB are scared of competition? But rather that upping their game, they're trying to at bully boy.
  • 3 0
THE UCI can't just drop in conditions like this at short notice, in fact I imagine legally they can't drop them in at all without offering riders compensation. No doubt the courts will settle this. I've dealt with the UCI professionally, they're jobsworth asshats.
  • 3 1
RedBull pays for the live broadcast. Its an insanely expensive thing to do. They need to get their brand its moneys worth. I can see their point. I think this will backfire though, no one likes being forced into doing things tjey dont want, if they push this im reallly looking forward to see what guys will be doing on the hotseat and podium , hopefully we see some creativity! Maybe someone will have a monster branded cbd oil bong.
  • 2 0
I get it..Red bull is a major sponsor of this series. But in Monster Energy Supercross the riders on the podium can show off and thank any sponsors they want. I love this series and the coverage of it... I also think that Redbull TV is pretty awesome but this a bit of a dick move on their part
  • 2 0
Interesting.. Redbull has been pretty good about keeping things cool and respecting the riders sponsorship deals in the past... I wonder what has changed? I get that they are shelling out a ton of money and want to maximize their exposure, but they aren't cutting checks for the entire field...
  • 4 0
C'mon Simon and UCI, Redbull is at near saturation on the live stream, it's not OK to go stepping on riders individual sponsorships.
  • 2 0
I get what people are saying about RedBulls work for the sport but we need to remember that they don't actually run the DH WC, the UCI does. I appreciate that RedBull is there to make money but it shouldn't be at the cost everyone else and they kinda need to wind their necks in a little. It's the UCI DH World Cup, not the RedBull DH World cup!
  • 2 0
When a lead brand gets a paranoia like this it suggests the brand manager or more likely their director isn’t in touch with their relative brand value in the space. Or arbitrarily they have made a pre season contract without considering the wider scope.
Either way this is not great publicity for RB and if carried will only serve to give a negative short term response to the brand followed by deeper long term repercussions on the activity (DH racing) as a whole.
Red bull have a superb brand presence in Mtb. Calibre athelte roster, solid media and enough competition to keep the suggestion of monopoly away. Shame if a bean counter screws that for them.
  • 2 0
i'm sure i've missed something along the way, but the other side of the coin is that it can't be cheap to do what red bull do, year in year out, all around the world. every person in x-sports is like 'red bull, thanks guys, you put on the best events and 'set piece's'. but then its like 'how dare you try to make money after ploughing literally millions into our sports'. please educate me. no doubt mr red bull is sitting a gold plated castle on the top of whistler, but i can't help feel they pump untold amounts of cash into putting events and races on.
  • 1 0
I Honestly I can't expect much less from such a tycoon. In light of Monster releasing "Reign Energy" VPX's "bang" and all the countless releases from Rockstar, all redbull has done is a slightly varied flavor lineup that isn't bad but doesn't really stand out. On top of that they are more notably a novelty drink in concerns to "energy" *80mg of caffeine a can is minute in comparison to those other brands. If they grew with the times they wouldn't have a need to press this on everyone. That being said they do bring some awesome reachable content to the table so for that I'm grateful.
  • 1 0
It is absurd since all of the other riders not sponsored by Red Bull have their sponsors logos all over their jerseys and helmets. I get it, everything is a money play and advertising but this seems to be taking it to the next level. My question is once the ban goes into enforcement what if a rider brings a sticker or something to put over the red bottle if they are not a Red Bull Athlete?
  • 3 0

  • 2 1
Red Bull has f*cked with the world cups enough haven’t they? They wanted straighter tracks for better broadcasting and now guys are switching from dh to enduro because the ews knows how to host a good series. They f*cked up the start order so that the top 20 guys can be on tv every weekend. This is a step too far. Why can’t the uci put a foot down to Red Bull and run their series the way they want it run.
  • 1 0
If redbull is able to make these sorts of demands it is likely because they give more and sponsor more than any other company. Maybe this will motivate more companies to create their own signature series of awesomeness like redbull has. RED BULL is a borderline action sport charity with how much they’ve done for multiple different sports
  • 1 0
The company with tens of billions of dollars in annual profit is a charity?
  • 2 0
Uh oh, Red Bull has created a Monster. All teams need their sponsor $ and this could severely undercut non-redbull athletes. Total BS...and to announce it just before the first race? Pathetic.
  • 1 0
If anyone is stupid enough to drink any energy drinks then more fool them especially kids. Parents allowing their kids to drink energy drinks should take a long hard look at what they are doing to their kids health.
It is unfortunate that we live in an era where fast food, energy drinks and lack of dicipline are all acceptable and a teacher can't tell a kid off.

Oh.. redbull... take your cat p!$$ drink and do one.

Parent of 5 kids. None of them drink red Bull so we couldn't give a monkeys what bollox they try and dictate to Dh.

(Rant over).
  • 2 1
You don't have to watch the broadcast if you don't want to.
  • 1 0
I can watch whatever I like and also can comment on the health risks of redbull (and other energy drinks).
  • 2 1
Red Bull sucks - don’t buy it. There are many better energy drinks that don’t require athlete to drink their poison syrup. I call for a boycott of Red Bull.

Coffee, teas (matcha/green, chia/black tea) and anything else. Energy drinks are gross and red bull epitomizes stupidity.
  • 3 0
Redbull: Nobody gives AF about your drink and nobody I know drinks it. You're tolerated for sponsoring mtb, but push too far and nobody will give AF if you're replaced.
  • 1 0
I'm sorry Ill give my 2 cents but..... When I see REDBULL MONSTERROCKSTAR on whatever podium whether it be motocross, snowmobile, mtb, or baseball, I doesn't even really register with me like OMG I have to go buy one of these drinks..When I was a kid, SURE that's what I thought then. Plus These Professionals don't even really drink this shit honestly. Maybe a sip or two but yeah I would too If I got a $3000 bonus check for taking a sip on stage infront of a crown or camera. All Marketing...
  • 1 0
I have no time for energy drinks like Red Bull as a sponsor or as product. They push their products around sports when they are unhealthy due to what is in their contents.

Red Bull in the news is owned by a group of self centered tax evaders who support a wanted criminal who has evaded court for over 5 years.

www.scmp.com/news/asia/southeast-asia/article/2107208/how-super-rich-thai-family-co-founded-red-bull-conceals-its

Why products like Red Bull are around International and Olympic level sports is purely a money grab by sports organizers. Organizers who take BS sponsors like these are keeping decent sponsors away from being involved as a sponsor in a sport.
  • 1 0
Hey Red Bull you are better than this ,just don’t,cause some decisions like that could back fire you and shit happens, and there are a lot of people just waiting for that ,so just give free Red Bull on the events and then magic could happen
  • 1 0
I get that red bull pay a lot. Made a lot of our sport viewable.
BUT!!
If the other atheletes can’t show sponsorship then they may not be sponsored. Then can’t afford to race.
Then no race series anyway.
Monster should remind them of the supercross deal. Maybe do the same to red bull in that.
  • 1 0
This is insane! Red Bull is crazy for implementing this! I understand they only want their products advertised and that they are the ones filming the race but you can’t stop other riders who have contracts with other brands. Next you’ll only see the Red Bull riders and riders without energy drink sponsorships being filmed Eek lol

So basically Redbull is taking pages from Apple and Specialized's Dick Move Playbooks. When I was still drinking energy drinks my fuel of choice was NOS. It came in cans or bottles with the NOS colors like the boost stuff for cars. Add vodka... Anyway screw this. Yes they're the main sponsors and do a lot for the sport but its shit to do this and cut out other drinks that sponsor riders.
  • 4 4
guys... its thanks to REDBULL that we can watch the live feed!

"In the meantime, we would remind you that the partnership with Red Bull and Red Bull Media House is continuing to enable us to improve and grow the UCI Mercedes Benz World Cup series and your understanding of their marketing and sponsorship needs would be appreciated."

not saying that RedBull is right, but....
  • 2 0
The problem is that Redbull is here in the role of a TV station. It shouldn't have the right to influence the event itself. Like the order of the starting list, or which athlete gets to show his energy drink. Perhaps UCI is the real bad guy here, as at some point they must have given up control to some degree.
  • 1 0
Perhaps a compromise would be to limit the size of the competitors logo ls displayed on the riders shirts, caps etc, and no “product placement” etc. “Business” should be about compromise not domination.

  • 2 0
We all understand that sponsorship is advertising an vice versa but, when a sponsor. No matter how big gets to dictate at this level...... Not good
  • 1 1
Surprised at all of the backlash here, it is no different than what major sponsors of other sporting events are doing. Reebok did similar for both UFC and Crossfit where they invested a lot of money. Athletes are only able to wear their gear during televised events, even if sponsored by other companies.

Bottom line is, RB has dropped serious dollars on mountain biking and related coverage. Would everyone rather they pack up and abandon the sport? Then what? We go back to the Stone Age with no live coverage and MAYBE a photo epic from Pinkbike? Remember all of the bitching that goes on here when there is no live stream of an event?!?

This is going to be an unpopular opinion but with the money they drop on the sport, RB are entitled to a certain level of privilege.
  • 2 0
First, UCI would have agreed to this months before hand, it's hella cynicial dropping it on the riders now. Second, if they want to do something like this, they need to make it clear in advance so individuals can work it into their respective contracts with their sponsors, seasons in advance. Third, Redbull should be paying the talent, they have an audience of 10s of millions, they should be paying those doing the work.
  • 1 1
@mbikes1: Redbull should not be payingbriders. They are the broadcaster (rights for which they have paid) but it’s not their event. What your suggesting would be like saying NBC should be paying football players because they broadcast the game. That’s silly. It’s not the broadcasters role to pay them. If you want to say the UCI should take more of the money Redbull gives them and pay the rides or increase prize money that’s a valid argument. But they have no direct contract or agreement with the riders.
  • 1 0
@sino428: so to clarify you are OK with riders being paid for making the broadcast, but you want to nitpick about exactly how the transaction would be structured?

I'll go looking for your comment on how it's not Redbull forcing them not to display other drinks, but their own team (as that is who they have the contractual relationship with)
  • 1 0
@mbikes1: I have no idea what you are even talking about. So again no, it’s not the role of the broadcaster to pay athletes in any sport. Broadcasters pay the league or event organizer for the rights to air the event. It’s then up to that organizer to pay the athletes. For example, take any major sports league. The tv networks pay the league or individual team a set fee for the rights to air their games. The teams or leagues then negotiate contracts and pay with the players or athletes. It’s no different here. Redbull pays the UCI. What the UCI does with the money is up to them. Wether they pay riders, raise prize money, or just keep it is a negotionatin between the UCI and the riders. Broadcasting companies want no part of directly compensating players and athletes. That’s not how any sports broadcasting deal works.
  • 1 0
@sino428: so you are just nitpicking about how the transaction should be structured, good for you.

These 'energy' drinks are disgusting. I don't know how people drink them in the first place.

This needs to be a thing in Mountain Biking www.wedrinkwater.com

This is weird considering Jared Graves wears a BIG Monster Energy cap in his interviews in On Track with Curtis Keene. A Red Bull produced series.

Never liked the drink, but accept the position they have adopted.. it is a business... Would slamming voddy/redbull shots on the podium be acceptable ?
  • 2 0
If it wasn't for the hot seat redbull cans I wouldn't even have realized Redbull was at or part of the event!
  • 1 0
The first few times I drank redbull I noticed If I drank it on an empty stomach I would get stomach pains. So I never drink it anymore.
  • 3 0
 Drink water should take over....
  • 2 0
Hardest job in the world right now? Redbull PR person in charge of mountainbike events.

RedBull we love what you’ve done for the mountain biking.
But you can’t be selfish. Bullying is not cool either. #igotsomethingforyou

So excited to see the redbull showers on the podium, Champagne was always too bubbly and took too long.
  • 1 0
I don't see the point of having an energy drink AFTER a ride. Why not just have a beer?
  • 2 0
 Yeah! And before...and during...
  • 1 0

  • 1 0
Soon the podium is going to look like a Japanese porn film with all the 'wrong' brands blurred. out.
  • 1 0
Poor sportsmanship for sure. Everyone already knows the brand and likes them for the most part. Kinda seems petty to me.

Yeah, why is nobody mentioning the podium champagne? Hot seat sponsorship flouting is one thing but they all get champagne on the steps, Redbull would have a very hard time changing that.
