Red Bull Hardline is Cancelled Due to Extreme Weather Conditions

Jul 16, 2023
by Ed Spratt
Sun down but some very unsettled atmosperics on the way. Hopefully we ll see some more action this weekend

After difficult weather conditions stopped practice on Friday and Saturday's qualifying the organisers of Red Bull Hardline alongside the riders have decided to cancel this year's event.

bigquotesHaving monitored course conditions in collaboration with the riders to provide the best possible chance of putting on a safe event, due to the extreme weather conditions in the Dyfi valley the decision has been made to cancel Red Bull Hardline to ensure the safety of the riders.Red Bull

Glad to hear it. They need a back up event where they session disgusting rut lines instead.
  • 36 1
 I’d 100% watch that

Just have ride arounds on the gaps

Doesn’t make for good marketing insta shots which is all RB are interested in
  • 8 1
@JamesKROZ: it’d be just as good if not better. No nerves, just the gnarliest riders in the world railing ruts having fun with the mates.
  • 13 1
 Redbull Rutland? Rutline?
  • 5 1
I would pay to watch guys railing nasty ruts over and over. Take my cc info.
  • 9 3
@bikes-arent-real & @lehott: Redbull Rut-page!! Redbull, this really needs to happen right now: call back Ratboy & rest of Hardline field, dial up Loosedog & J.Barnes as Rut-page alternates, give each lad a mattock, & ruts will automagically appear for railing & viewing pleasure!
  • 10 0
@chrismac70: Bump Skier's turned their weird fetish into an Olympic sport, I don't see why MTB can't have a high level rut line event, similar to Whip Offs.

isn't this every English mtb edit from the last ten years?

 @lehott: Rutrage Big Grin

@jimfredo: well said,at least there would be a show. The jumps at the bottom would have been rideable.I was in the area this weekend and the weather wasn't extreme as the headline states.

Gosh, they should really replace the 90ft. jumps with 15-20ft jumps and top out the drops to around 4ft so they can still race when its bad weather. It'll still be very thrilling to watch!
  • 34 18
@scott-townes: then it’s not hardline. The purpose of hardline was to have a rampage style course in race format.

It’s like saying, “they should get rid of the 69ft drops in Utah for 15-20ft drops.” It’s not the same
  • 17 4
@scott-townes: so just a regular DH race then
  • 39 8
@scott-townes: it’s called Hardline, not Softline

@mtb-jon: Yeah, exactly but its still called Hardline!

I think its a fantastic idea!!
  • 14 8
@ kroozctrl: so it wasn’t hardline before they built the 90 footers last year then?

There are other lines and jumps that weren’t being used which might have been rideable in bad weather if they had been prep’d.

They’ve had bad weather ‘21 and ‘23 so maybe a bit of contingency planning for next year is needed.

@cypher74: no that was soft line
  • 1 2
@mi-bike: you need to learn how to used that term correctly. But then again r/whoosh Bernard Kerr flew 90ft over you. He was literally one of the few people that did a top down run during the rain and wind.
  • 2 0
@kroozctrl: Considering the galeforce winds cancelling the event my woosh was highly appropriate, thank you very much.

@AddisonEverett: Not really,we were invaded by the Norman's.
  • 53 3
Best part of hardline are the "first hits" videos, so we got what we wanted

Shame they can't just reschedule to a few days from now
  • 48 1
It was really cool that this year they had a group of folks that werent necessarily a part of the competition, but just sessioning the different features with everyone that were training for race day. The Jones brothers, all the women they invited, having riders from different backgrounds give their perspective on the extreme features without the pressure of actually racing is healthy for the sport and fun to watch. Same with dark fest and rampage, having groups of riders that arent competing but just getting to ride the different features is intriguing for the audience and builds confidence for future competitors.
  • 52 1
It's grey, cold, piss wet and windy, or as the Welsh like to call it "summer".

Always thought they had it later in the year so the weather wouldn't be as shite. Hopefully they do it later in the year. Kudos to Red Bull for putting riders safety first. Imagine hitting a 90 footer and its so windy your drifting in the air, haha no.
  • 20 1
In the UK this is usually prime time for weather, however Wales is notorious fir being piss wet all year through
  • 9 1
We had a good three or four weeks of fantastic weather followed by a couple of weeks of rubbish. It's just bad luck.
  • 2 0
 @jonlees: liquid sunshine!

Safe is better than sorry: it’s just part of “The process”.

Having said that: gutted for me, obvz, but mainly for the riders, the crews and the spectators

  • 18 6
@Banktramp: Oh no not on the list of riders, big deal. I still saw them riding on various videos. That's half the show.
  • 3 1
Any news on how bad Jess's ankle is? Seeing the video on BK's youtube made it look quite bad.
Massive respect for sending that drop!
  • 13 3
@Banktramp: are you saying the Jones brothers weren't part of the show either? They've provided at least 54.7% of the entertainment and hype this year.

@inked-up-metalhead: yes they was part of the build up, I was on about actually completing as in timed runs.

54.7% is an accurate measurement, care to explain how you got to that figure

@nickfranko: I would have expected a very low number then haha
  • 9 1
@Banktramp: Actually on either Jess or Tahnee's IG, one of them said that if they were able to link together a full run in training that they would be allowed to race in qualifying. Unfortunately that didn't happen because of shortened practice and then the canceled race. They were given the opportunity to earn a spot in the show if they could put it together.
  • 6 2
@FrothDog: that’s a shame, would be a massive step forward to have females included.
  • 3 2
@Banktramp: I got that number because Ive watched 3 videos from jono, 1 from gee, 1 from brendog and 1 from Bernard kerr, but I got bored a few minutes before the end of Bernard's so you can't say 50% was non Jones content.
  • 2 0
@inked-up-metalhead: you missed Adam Brayton out, he did 4 videos.

But I get what your saying mate.
  • 6 1
Seems like the best decision considering the weather and riders safety. But one think I don't get.. totally canceling instead of postponing it 1 week or something? Is it due to cost reasons or riders schedules, etc..? I'm just curious, not messing around or anything.
  • 10 1
I'd guess most people involved have other plans than to waut around there for a week...
  • 5 0
You'd be asking all the riders, their associated entourage, ticket holders, red bull employees, media people, marshals, medical/first aid staff, land owners, rental companies for all the infrastructure, uplift vehicle providers and anyone else that I haven't thought of to be free one week following. It's a big ask. Organizing a single weekend event requires ALOT of stars to align to make it happen.
  • 3 0
@haroman666: thanks for being a voice of reason in this. The number of “just do it next weekend” comments are staggering.

Also, let’s not forget the riders’ families.

Also: hail satan.
  • 6 1
Bummer! But we got to see a lot of cool riding on the course none the less. Jono & Matt Jones, Bernad Kerr and many more has put out some awesome videos on YT the last couple of days

@commental: Hasn't won or competed in Rampage that I'm aware of ..but I could see him doing it one day. He's impossible not to watch and he's the case for natural talent - hasn't had anywhere near the years & level of workout / fitness training of longtime pros and has a relatively heavy bike vs. his body weigth...still taking out those long time pros, most of whom have not podiumed their 1st three races of the year (or ever for many). Kid said on a recent VitalMTB podcast w/ the Syndicate interiew that he doesn't even work out.

Just a thought…with no spectators, Red Bull could install a monster wind break over the entire course and make the world’s largest billboard…
  • 5 2
Disappointed but that's Sumner in the UK hey! So many cool riders there this year, including females. I was so excited and it was going to be epic! Mabey they should go back to end of WC season. Seems better weather.
  • 7 1
Lets hope its rescheduled instead of written off this year.
  • 4 1
Nope, it's been written off (see Gee Atherton's insta post).
  • 6 1
It not safety first, it’s people first. Thanks for caring for the riders!
  • 6 1
They should have it in some country that actually has a summer.
  • 2 1
Yeh a mud mutha event, would test bikes ability in the gloop, help push designs and give feedback in these sorta conditions, we dont all bake in glorious sunshine and hard pack, so definitely a side event back up of sorts is better than disappointment at a cancelled event
  • 4 0
Give the win to BK as he appears to be the only one who put in a full run early am youtu.be/odmspjFmBA4

  • 1 1
Disappointing not to get it, but that's the nature of the beast with weather and the sport. Similar to Rampage need better planning, scheduling and funding to have either back up venues/alt lines or weather days like Freeride Comps.

why not postpone until next weekend? Seems like a lot of hard work for nothing
  • 9 1
What they should do is host the event Natural Selection style because where there's a 5 day weather window and they pick the best one. Ensures safety and event success.
  • 2 0
Riders, crew, emergency services, probably have other commitment next weekend. It is not like they are all procrastinating all year long except during RB Hardline.
  • 1 1
Has to fit in with RB marketing scheme. That’s the only reason the event exists
  • 2 0
Can't they just postpone it? Or do all the athletes have places to be right after Hardline?
  • 2 1
Safety first! In addition, I can now get on my bike myself in almost perfect conditions :-)
  • 2 2
Good. If you can't prepare nor compensate for such heavy gusts, it shouldn't be raced. Bummed for all those who put so much hard work (and money) into this one.
  • 4 3
Soooo. . . . . .now what? No Hardline for another year, thats if the weather's ok in a year.
  • 9 11
Better that than someone ruin the rest of the season (or their career) by sending it in bad conditions for our entertainment.

  • 2 2
schedule 2 weekends in advance for 2024? If one weekend is cancelled, you have a spare backup weekend.....take advantage of the long break for WC mid-season
  • 1 0
WC break doesn't mean racing is not happening in other events over the summer.
  • 3 3

Think cos the WC season is going on til early October this year, the earliest they would have been able to do it and have any WC riders show would have been mid October. So they did it in the break before Worlds.
