To close out 2023, we've narrowed down the top 10 rated mountain bike trails around the globe. These trails have been reviewed by the Trailforks community, representing the heart-pounding descents, addictive airtime and technical ascents that keep us coming back for more. As we ease off the brakes and coast to the end of this epic countdown, it's crucial to recognize that the rankings you're about to feast your eyes on are a culmination of the collective experiences shared by riders. 10. Illegal, Trail Park Klínovec, Karlovy Vary

Our global tour kicks off across the pond in the Czech Republic to a trail so good, it should be 'Illegal'. This isn't your run-of-the-mill park trail—it's raw, wild, and slightly rebellious. Consider it an untamed adventure; it's not officially maintained, adding an element of unpredictability and a genuine rugged feel to the ride. This track isn't for the faint-hearted, but if you're up for it, be sure to 'Czech' this trail out when you're in the area.

9. Big Chook, Blue Tier Forest Reserve, Weldborough, TAS
Venturing into the Southern Hemisphere, our ninth-ranked trail leads us to Tasmania, Australia. Part of the Blue Tier Forest Reserve trails network, Big Chook is a popular blue singletrack trail in the region, and for good reason!

8. Yeah Gnar, Mākara Peak, Wellington

Next up we head further south to Wellington, New Zealand. Yeah Gnar is known as one of the toughest trails around the Wellington area, and was built to test the limits. It links a range of challenging features one after the other as it makes its way down the valley. It's always a good idea to scope out beforehand to figure out entry and exit speeds, lines and options, and don't forget if you're not feeling up to it... it's okay to say 'yeah gnar', not today!

7. Salmon Run, Fernhill Trails, Queenstown

Nestled in the stunning landscapes of Queenstown, Salmon Run at Fernhill Trails is popular for both its unreal beauty and diverse terrain. This trail provides a perfect blend of flowy sections for the speed demons and technical segments to test your skills and patience.

6. Te Poaka, Whakarewarewa Forest, Rotorua

Tucked away in the Whakarewarewa Forest, Rotorua boasts trails that are the holy grail for mountain bikers. The trail name Te Poaka, translates to "the pig" due to the discovery of pig tusks while being built by Empire of Dirt, funded by the Rotorua Lakes Council. This trail is suitable for beginners and provides all the fun for experienced riders too.

Locals will argue that the most popular lap in the Whistler Bike Park is Dirt Merchant --> Dirt Merchant Pro Line --> Aline Zone 3, where your wheels will spend more time in the air than on the ground.

3. Boneshaker, Velo MSM Lac-Sainte-Marie, QC

 Unfortunately a lot of sick, but unsanctioned trails are still accessible via trailforks, Strava, and other apps. It's a shame they are all ok with taking subscription money to popularize these spots which will lead to closures of some pretty amazing trails.

 @mcfadden999: read the comment again if you dont understand... I said the views are great, and there is lots of miles of trails, however, that doesn't mean they are good trails. Most are 2 way, and hiker allowed.... as well as horses. Thats what I'm complaining about. But stay here, make sure my houses all increase in value so i can retire sooner!

 @rzicc: say 99.99% of trails in the world allow hikers, even the shore and Whistler (outside the park) do. Ore chute is a pretty sweet directional trail, San Juans are nice and steep, gj has plenty directional. Where do you think is better?

 @mcfadden999: exactly that, a trail with purpose built features weather that is flow or tech. Think Capt Ahab, as I'm sure you have ridden that. What CO does is build "paths", think anything else here in the front range. We dont do maintenance, we allow people and bikes to climb the same trail which is so stupid. Even MM is worthless. a bunch of random "jumps" not placed in any sort of order or fashion. If we were to develop trails correctly, they would mostly drain and wear in correctly. Still would need some love, but not get blown out like they are now. Think bike parks... Keystone, WP are awesome.

 @vandall: I meant the system as in the users using the app…as in, the way users interact with the app is a system producing shitty recommendations.

@moonsaballoon yeah I understand that, and agreed; I’m glad it exists. But it highlights why aggregated Trailforks trail ratings are meaningless at face value. If I visited Roto and solely used those ratings to create my route, I’d be missing a LOT of “better” trails; at least those I consider better anyway. Local recommendations will always beat crowdsourced digital aggregations in my opinion.

 Every single one of these trails are 1,000's of times better than anything near Bellingham Washington. Couple that with the fact that Bellingham has 29% unemployment and the highest taxes of any municipality. It rains 362 days a year, leading to incurable depression and 92% of the population has some strain or 2 of an STD as well as horrible gingivitis.
Worst place to visit or choose to live. Just a warning PSA from a miserable Hamster.

 Black Bear is a national treasure. The climb SUCKS but no trip to KT is complete without a white knuckle full pull on Black Bear.

 @querent: I just wish it was a little smoother. The gradient isn't terrible, there are a lot of small rocks and ruts that suck after spending all day using smoother climbing trails in town (or Victory Road)

 @Sscottt: Sideshow Bob is much easier than Black Bear in terms of technicality. Sideshow Bob probably has a higher average speed and longer jumps.

Upper Black Bear is the "flow trail" part of Black Bear and its jumps, tables, and switchbacks are much tighter than Sideshow Bob - think of Upper Black Bear as a downhill pump track. Both the upper and lower Black Bear sections are much tighter than Sideshow Bob - I think the lower section is handmade vs machine made.This means it is more like a tech trail in terms of regular rocks, stumps, roots, and sizes of jumps, but it is very much not a pedaling trail.

 My favorite route is, after the climb, Upper Black Bear down to the haul rd, then back up to hit Upper BB again.

I usually go from Black Bear to Stormin Normin after that. Such a sick trail system over there.

We do a 2 car shuttle that starts at the Burke campground too. Leave a car at the East Haven lot. Start from the campground, Ride down Roly Grail, head over to Trillium, up to Magill Fields, Down Butter Tubbs to Shonter Shuffle (Awesome Trail too!) Besaw up to the Pavilion then do the Black Bear ride I suggested above. Finish at the EH lot, ice cold beers at Dirt Church brewery. Ah, love the KT trail system.

 If you you go up Haul Road, yes, the climb to the top of Black Bear sucks but you can get there from town in a much more gradual and enjoyable way. So much fun to be head up at Kingdom Trails. As I get older, I enjoy flow more and more...

 Hm, I wish you'd use bayesian ranking. These are trails that have ONLY 5 stars. What's better a trail that got 50 votes only one of which is 4 stars, or a trail that got 15 votes with only 5 stars (such as the #10 on this list)?

 Actually that's one of my feature requests for Trailforks. When I'm checking out a new area, it would be great if you used bayesian averages, so that when I sort trails by ratings I don't have to go through pages of "5-star" trails that only have one vote.

 Love DM2A-L even though I case most of it and haven’t ridden it in years. Calling it a “trail” when it’s highly engineered, machine-built, and costs $ to access would seem to set it (and others) apart from a plain old bike trail. More like an east coast toll freeway.

 I've been a few places, Salmon Run in Queenstown is definitely a standout. Not just the trail itself, but the cool adventure it takes just to access it when riding from the Bike Park. The first time I did it was by myself after the bike park had closed, no idea where I was, no phone, no one around.... just winged it. Holy shit! The trail is proper wild and creative, the v@gina tree etc. I won't lie, I walked a few bits too. Some crazy exposure, stunning views and then rolls finishes back in Wynyard where you can just roll into town for a beer. Truly disneyland for bikes!

 Boundary is so sick, but it's just one of miles of great jerky flow trails at Fredrick. IMBA has to step and help save the shed. The push trails and a few others getting closed there is pure shame. RIP Reanimator. If you get get to watershed in Frederick, do it.

 Was pretty surprised to see that make the list. Fun trail no doubt but not even close to top 10 in the world haha. That said yes the shed is a good time and at least a few there I'd put ahead of Boundary Line. Especially if you like jank.

 would you say it's worth a 3.5 hr drive from central Jersey? I was shocked to see something so highly rated somewhat in the area.

 @jbdiguido: I would drive 3+ hours from Pittsburgh for a weekend at the Shed. Worth imo. The town is pretty nice to check out after too for dinner and drinks.

 My Son and I did Captain Kangaroo a couple years ago . The climb to the top from the very bottom is also epic , We had so much fun coming down he uses the trail picture of the Captain as his ID picture and actually so do I . Definitely a destination trail and there's enough other trails in the area to keep you entertained for a few days including epic 7summits maybe an hour away.

 Lots of work being done in the koots as of late with new trails springing up everywhere. Rialto, Morning Mountain, Salmo and Kokenee creek to just name a few. Camp at Syringa and be at the center of it all!

 Just seeing Frederick on this list made me not trust anything reported... I literally left MD because of the lack of challenging MTB trails/ elevation (reason for lack of proper gnarly trails...). This really just shows densely populated zones that have trails/ most heavily trafficked trails.

 Klinovec "Illegal" - only because there is no other lift assisted trail of this kind that is so well known 150kms around.
Great bikepark line though. Flowy fast and technical.

This highlights how silly such a rating system is.

2. Downieville - Tower to Town has some amazing riding
3. Mt. Hough
4. Mills Peak
5. Tahoe trails - too many to list but South Lake Tahoe alone has such incredible riding.

 I've only ridden 1 of the trails on this list, and Black Bear isn't even my favorite trail at KT. But it is the one on which people will yell WHOO! the most.

Also not a CA guy myself, but I've ridden there a bit. At Soquel I prefer Braille DH and Ridge over the Flow Trail. Although I will say that particular Flow Trail is far and away the best of the new generation of "Flow" trails that I've ridden to date.

And yeah, Downieville alone is worth getting on a plane for me. Butcher Ranch being the highlight, it's everything I personally like in a trail.

All this to say this list just looks like a Trailforks Popularity contest much more than an actual trail rating. Different strokes for different folks of course though...

Pinkbike (despite the numerous polls throughout the year) somehow comes up with a list of nominees behind closed doors, then from behind those very same closed doors decides upon a winner out the short list of nominees. Trailforks instead actually utilizes the user data they collected and uses that to declare a winner. It may not generate as much swearing, crap and conspiracy theories in the comment section but I can see positives as well.

 I find it interesting that all of these trails are relatively short. Under 5.4k. Big Chook being the longest. Some incredibly short. Dirt Merch being 500m. This reveals that the users are DH and enduro centric, bike park and trail center centric.Of course that is where you get the most traffic, i.e. user ratings. I wonder if you can breakdown the data to trails over 10k in distance or trails with a certain amount of elevation gain. Example, best ranked trail with 500m elevation gain and best rating for trails over 10k in length.

 Many of those trails are part of bigger trail networks, with options to reach them or continue onwards from their "end". Captain Kangaroo for example has a matching up track (Mr Green Jeans), which is also quite nice - probably part of what makes Captain Kangaroo get so many upvotes. The down trail got the upvotes, but the up trail was part of the experience that made the down memorable. If the up trail had been heinous it would have tainted the experience of the down trail.

 Captain Kangaroo is a pretty long ride. Long enough that you don't necessarily feel you need to ride anymore that day.

 Big chook is much loved by hubbards and xc riders who go for pilgrimages to Derby in TAS. Its only really fun when very wet and then you can drift and slide all the way down. Too much pedalling and too slow a descent to be DH or Enduro centric. Have to ride it absolutely flat out to be fun in the dry

 Captain Kangaroo is very good, rode it this summer. On a side note, the climbing trail up to it is the most fun and pleasant climbing trail I think I have ever ridden.

 Paired with Mr. Green Jeans this imo is the best climb/descend combo in BC. Dont forget to hit wings after for just a little more!! Kudos to the castlegar trail society and all their work.

 1) there are flow trails, jump trails, Technical rock gardens and then trails that have extremely unique features and a mix of all. This is fairly subjective but there are trails in Laguna Beach CA that would make a pro squeamish like PG's, Dirty Bird in Rocky Peak or Crestline in in the mountains of SoCal. Hangover in Sedona is incredibly unique and Pseudo-Tsuga in Squamish for an incredible flow trail.

 one of my favorite things about trailforks is the ability to rate dogshit trails 1 star. If you built a flow trail, and a month later people are complaining about "lack of maintenance" you deserve negative stars on your trail lol

 3 to less than 1/2 mile in length, am I reading that right? Don't think I'd drive more than 15-20 min. for any ride that short much less to a faraway land to who knows where.

 Do you not understand that these trails are usually part of a network of trails? How much you ride is up to you, and if you don't understand how trail networks have named trails within them to differentiate all the different ways you could ride them (and rate sections of the network individually), then you are indeed best to stay home.

 Captain Kangaroo is 4.4km long. Then there are 4 choices of trails below that up to 1.6km. So in total, up to 6km in descent. Add to that the 8.5km climb to get to the top of Captain Kangaroo and you’re looking at a 14.km ride. Or, in Yankee meters that’s 8.7 miles. It’s also a 2391 foot climb to get to Captain Kangaroo. I think I’d drive more than 15-20 minutes for that ride.
