2020 2021 Hardtail Check Out

Ragley turned up at the Core Bike Show with more aggressive versions of their hardcorest hardtails the Big Wig (pictured) and the Blue Pig.

A burly Lyrik leads the spec sheet for both these aggro builds.

The Big Wig currently rolls on 29" wheels with 140mm travel while the Blue Pig is the 27.5" version with 150mm travel. Both are made from 4130 steel and have been long-time favourites with Ragley buyers. These new spec options were inspired by custom builds the brand had seen on social media, showing there was an appetite for even more aggressive options.

This blue-green glittery paint job is a real eye-catcher.

Ragley has been smart with the spec and are using own-brand parts in combination with some headline-grabbing key components where they can to keep the bike around the two grand mark.

These Race specs have been given an extra 10mm of travel and an upgrade to Lyrik forks to boost the front end stiffness. This change should also slacken them off even further, making for a more ploughable feel. Other changes include downhill tyres, including an Assegai on the front, four-pot brakes front and rear, and a Shimano SLX 12 speed drivetrain. Ragley is hoping that these hardtails will now be capable enough to tackle local enduro races.

there's just something about A hardcore hardtail , even better if they're made from steel

If you won’t call a hardtail “aggressive” can you even sell it? How many more points does one score for owning a hardcore hardtail over an aggressive hardtail?
  • 49 1
@WAKIdesigns: I've done the math and run the numbers and I'd say that it's about 42069 points.
  • 16 3
@Waki: it’s just a bike man! Not everyone sees their toys as some extension/projection of themselves. Let’s get back to enjoying riding bikes vs psychoanalyzing gear choices
  • 14 17
@babymorox: it’s a steel aggressive hardtail with oil slick paint - it will sell like hot buns! Because it’s all about fun when the hardtail very aggressive! Smile
  • 4 1
@WAKIdesigns: so true! The bike looks rad and should last forever, any trendiness aside.
  • 17 12
@babymorox: I said it with a tongue in a cheek. It’s may be hard to find an aggressive hardtail, but not as hard as finding an aggressive rider. Well, aggressive trolls on the other hand...

Amen, all that most riders really need. I have a P7 and it’s great, these Ragley are definitely on my next bike shortlist.

Anyone else think a 74 degree seat tube isnt steep enough?
  • 1 0
Agreed, that’s the only thing between this and a custom Marino frame @timotino107:

 There's a bike I didn't know I needed until today.

I ride a 2017 Bigwig setup 27.5+ and it's a fantastic bike. Much cheaper than Honzo, Rootdown, Surface and other North American designed hardtails. ChainReaction sells them for around 2k CDN with better builds than most 4k hardtails in Canada.

 Where's the frickin geo sheet?

@brncr6: hey measurements should be here too if you ask me
  • 2 0
 @brncr6: "key" measurements haha

@brncr6: God knows where, from a phone it’s certainly well hidden on there!

@threehats: they didn't want to post the large had a 460mm reach on PB and have no one visit their site haha
  • 1 0
@jesse-effing-edwards: get the xl no problem then reach wise
  • 4 3
 @jesse-effing-edwards: 460mm reach on a hardtail is similar to 480-490mm on a comparable full-sus.
  • 3 0
@threehats: I've got a full sus that has a reach of 475 and a hardtail thats 465 and the full sus feels longer so not sure I agree with that. Regardless most new fangled aggro Hardtails are longer than 460 reach with 475 starting to be on the more conservative side for new bikes in 2020
  • 4 0
@jesse-effing-edwards: There must be some other reasons you feel that (like stack height, stem and bar, seat angle) because the way hardtails and full-sus bikes change in reach under sag is simple geometry: Head tube drops vs BB = reach gets longer (hardtail); BB drops vs head tube = reach gets shorter (full-sus unless you’re a rare person running more fork sag than shock sag).
  • 1 0
@jesse-effing-edwards: in addition to what @threehats said, do you mean it feels longer in reach only or just as a bike? Are the wheelbases comparable? For me I notice that more than reach.
  • 1 0
@kiksy: I don't know, but I have Process 111 which has little squish on the back and a 140mm on the front, so that may be part of it. The only time I really notice the longer reach on the process is when I have to get the front up on slower drops/jumps etc, where the front end feels more significant.

 Gorgeous bike. Great work ragley.
  • 4 0
@BikesBoatsNJeeps: Wrong. Even if Chromag does hardtails for a while now, all the geometry updates they did on their last models were 100% inspired from what the British did already. Chromag just followed that british trend, as well as Production Privee, Sobre, Nordeste etc... That`s not a shame though.

I’m not sure we can say that of the Doctahawk. It feels like in it’s own class.

2019 MMMBOP rider here. Ragley knows what's up. Affordable and can hammer trails. I was blown away with it when I got it. Just a good bike.
  • 1 1
What fork do you have I have mine is under gunned right now. I have a 16 marz 350cr 160mm.
  • 2 0
@Cspringsrider: I have a 160mm Suntour Durolux R2C2 on my Mmmbop and still haven't gotton close to pushing its limits. I need to ride harder.
  • 4 0
Finally. A bike that I could afford to buy and not have to upgrade a load of parts straight away to make me happy. I'd happily ride that one hard right out of the box.
  • 4 0
Be nice to see a 2.6 out back, that extra little bit of cushion and grip on the rear can be needed on hardtails.
  • 2 0
I just sold my Mmmbop. I had 2.6 in the front and back. It can fit, depending on the tire selection. Worked out really well.
  • 5 0
That's a sexy paintjob, making me aggro!
  • 3 1
Not sure why they speced a 125mm dropper on the size S. The 170mm Ascend fits my size S Mmmbop, just. Somebody said the rule-of-thumb for droppers is it should have more travel than the length of your, erm, thumb.
  • 1 0
Yup. If you buy one of these and you need a short post, you bought eh wrong size. I'm 5'10 and have a 185mm dropper in my medium, with tons of room to spare. If I bought this, it'd come with 150mm, that's just poor.

I’ve got the aluminum mmmbop and love it. Can hit anything I do on my fs bike just a little slower.
  • 9 0
I just sold my mmmbop and miss it. It was crazy how capable it is. Made me a believer of geo being more important than suspension.
  • 2 0
I love my mmmbop great bike don't miss mt fully climbs like a goat and decends well
  • 2 0
@Cspringsrider: Should i ever geht my mmmbob broken I will buy the blue pig. But that will never Happen. This Thing ist Bombproof. Fantastic Bike!
  • 4 0
The mullet version is called the Pig Wig.
  • 3 0
YAY More Ragley. Please cover the new 160mm Blue Pig Race. Ragley are awesome!
  • 3 0
All Mountain Hardtail done right! Damn good job.
  • 2 0
If you're going to install a FSA headset in that bike, you'd just as well install a FSA The Pig DH headset.
  • 2 0
has the front tire shit on it? (in the front pic)
  • 1 2
It is lovely but who's really going to buy it at £2200? Add up the shop cost of the parts and I'm pretty sure you could build it yourself for less. It's all decent stuff but it's not £2200 hardtail stuff.
  • 1 0
Can I have one, please ........

 Me two!
