Racing Rumours 2024 Part 1: Danny Hart Off Cube, Vali to YT, the End of GT Factory Racing, Kintner Off Norco, & More

Oct 30, 2023
by Ed Spratt

What a wild season! For some race fans, the off-season shenanigans are as intriguing as the racing itself and so we begin the silly business of internet investigation and rumour filtering until the UCI team list is revealed early next year.

We have a while to go until most riders will start announcing they are "parting ways" with current teams, so we have collected a few of the rumours from our sources and reached out to those involved to get a clearer picture of what might be happening beyond internet opinions. It's important to say that much of the information below is rumours, and only rumours , of some rider and team movements for 2024.

Danny Hart off Cube, with no 2024 deal secured
The whole of Scotland was praying for Danny today as the heavens let loose.

Danny Hart Could be one of the biggest names potentially switching seats ahead of the 2024 season as he may be saying goodbye to Cube Factory Racing after three years with the team.

The UK racer and multiple World Champion has not been able to repeat his great successes from previous teams since joining in 2021, and hasn't been on a World Cup podium since a 2nd place at Leogang in June 2022. While the main rumour has just been Danny leaving the German brand we have heard a suggestion of a few brands so we spoke to Danny to get the final say on his 2024 plans.

Danny Hart has told Pinkbike that: "Right now I have no deal for next year. I have even considered doing my own thing, but with the industry being in such a bad place, that looks very difficult. 'No budget' comes up every way I turn."

It would be a huge shock if a racer with the calibre of Danny Hart couldn't find a setup so we hope someone can find him a place for future race seasons.

Vali Höll moving back to YT?
Vali Holl in her not-so-bright whites.

Another seismic team change comes as Vali Höll has already seemingly confirmed she is off the RockShox Trek Racing setup she joined in 2021.

Following her win in Snowshoe and securing the overall title Vali Höll said in a post-race interview: "There's going to be a few changes next year so it's a bit sad. All they did the last five-six years I was on SRAM/RockShox it's been pretty incredible. We won I think four World Champ titles and three overalls together. It was just an incredible journey."

We contacted Vali for confirmation on this but at the time of publication, we have yet to receive a response.

As a move is confirmed for Vali, the rumour mill is at full speed with the Austrian rider surely receiving an influx of offers as one of the biggest talents on the race circuit with a 2023 season securing the most Elite women's race wins alongside the World Champ and World Cup overall titles.

The biggest noise we are hearing is that Vali is making a shift back to YT. It's fairly rare to see athletes return to brands at this stage in their careers, but the partnership always made sense to us. The rumour mill suggests the deal is for a (well-deserved) significant amount of money, and we're hopeful this signals a growing elite DH racing program for YT next year. We contacted the brand for more information, but they declined to comment at this time.

It's the end of GT Factory Racing as we know it
Ethan Craik takes the lead with only one rider to go.

In perhaps one of the worst-kept secrets so far this silly season we can confirm that after speaking to GT they are officially not going to be fielding a factory team next year. We were told in our conversation with GT that the decision has come from internal decisions as the brand is currently undergoing a major shift as it tries to find its own place within the larger brand conglomerate of PON. Earlier this year GT became a "stand-alone business" and moved back to Southern California and we were told the brand is searching for its new focus and did not want to mess around its racers with uncertainty so it told the riders in the middle of the season that the team would be closing. In part this was also the right time for the brand as we were told contracts were up at the end of 2023.

While it was a tough decision for the company and 2024 will be the first year without a factory GT team in many years, the brand hinted that it may still feature at World Cups under other setups. One aspect we did have confirmed is that GT is still aiming to be at DH World Cups in some form, but we are told that GT is done with Enduro for the time being based on internal changes and market headwinds. We weren't told any more details on this as discussions are still ongoing at this time.

Other enduro team changes for 2024?
Raphaela Richter took 4th in the women s race her best result of the season

The whole of the bike industry is continuing to feel immense pressure at this moment in time as sales fall, inventory remains high, and companies are working to rein in sports marketing budgets. With tough market conditions, we are told that some brands are seeing this as natural a time to step away from racing as budgets are shifted and the costs of race teams are a tough sell internally.

There's been a lot of frustration in the pits with World Cup enduro, so it's tempting to see the dropping of teams as a reaction to broadcasting and organizational changes, but from what we have heard so far these were not factors in teams deciding to leave the sport. To paint a more complete picture of the state of enduro in 2024 we reached out to many of the top teams about their plans for the future.

Teams Shutting Down

Ibis Racing -

bigquotesWe are at the end of the road for this World Cup season and this will also mark the end of Ibis Racing as we know it…

It has been a privilege to be a platform for athletes to grow and give them the opportunity to chase their dreams!

After numerous podiums, winning the team overall and developing up-and-comers into world-class racers it is now time to say goodbye. At least for now.

We couldn’t have done any of this without all of you guys so a massive thank you to our supporters, sponsors, riders and staff both past and present. It has been an absolute honour and we hope to be back at the races with you all at some point!
Ibis Racing

Devinci Global Racing -

bigquotesMountain bike racing has always resonated deeply in our roots here at Devinci. It's easy to say that every one of us here are strong racing fans. We've been part of the Enduro World Series and what it has become since the early days, and as the sport evolves, so does Devinci. The last few months at Devinci have been filled with amazing stories, new products, a fresh brand identity, with new values & vision.

After careful consideration, in alignment with our evolving vision, we have decided not to field a team for the Enduro World Cup in 2024. This decision was not taken lightly, and it reflects a shift in our focus towards different aspects of our brand and the mountain biking community.

Our commitment to the sport of mountain biking remains unwavering, and we will always continue to support riders, ambassadors, grassroots racing, and the broader mountain biking community in various ways. This includes our dedication to producing bikes here in Canada that empower riders of all levels to quench their thirst for freedom.

While we won't be participating in the Enduro World Cup in 2024, we are really excited about the future and the opportunities it holds, including an important announcement coming in only a few weeks’ time. We look forward to continuing to share more about our ‘We Make Riders’ vision and the exciting upcoming developments.

We want to express our gratitude to the riders, fans, and partners who have supported us throughout our journey in the Enduro World Series, and the Enduro World Cup. Your passion and dedication to the sport will continue to inspire us.

Confirmed 2024 Teams

Commencal Enduro Project - The Commencal Enduro Project has confirmed they plan to race the World Cups in 2024

Forbidden Synthesis Team -

bigquotesFrom the past 20+ years I've been at the WC races there are many companies that have left and come back, funny to see the most successful companies never leave racing and tough out the hard times.

As for us I'm happy to say our great group of riders our signed on for another 2 years, and we are hungry to help Rhys dominate more, Alex achieve his goals, and watch Emmy grow up as a full-blown pro athlete. I think it's unfortunate all the pit rumours going on staining everyone's minds with ideas there will be no enduro in the future or other horrible lies. Keep in mind we all love our enduro/trail bikes and it's the bike most sold.

I would love for it to have live TV that it deserves like DH and XC, but I guess it will just have to wait for now. Let's be patient.
Mathieu Dupelle, Forbidden Synthesis Team

Sunn French Connexion Racing By Alpe D'Huez - We have received word that while the Sunn French Connexion Racing By Alpe D'Huez team will be at World Cups, this won't be the team's only focus with a "plan to go back to the Enduro core roots with an alternative race circuit."

YT Mob -

bigquotes2023 was just the start of our Enduro journey. We’re committed to our racing program and our athletes. In 2024 The YT Mob will continue to grow, and we will fight for the top step.Isac Paddock, Athlete Communication Manager

Specialized Enduro Team -

bigquotesSpecialized Enduro Team will continue racing Enduro next year. Indeed, it's in the DNA of Specialized to race at the highest level of racing, enduro included. We don't know exactly the roster yet, but we're working on it now. However, I understand that teams are stopping their investment next year, and that's a shame for our sport. But in my opinion, it comes from multiple factors.Mathieu Durand, Specialized Enduro Team

Giant Factory Off-Road Team - The Giant team have confirmed to Pinkbike that it is committed to racing EDR World Cups next year.

Orbea Fox Enduro Team - Confirmation has been given to us that the Orbea team will continue in 2024 and is planning to race all EDR / E-EDR World Cups.

Nukeproof / Sram Factory Racing -

bigquotesAs we all know the industry is struggling a bit at the moment due to overstock after the covid boom and so budgets are tight for race programs and marketing, but I am sure that will get better over the next few years.

Nukeproof / Sram factory racing will be back in 2024 racing the full UCI Enduro World Cup. There seems to be some negative rumours going around at the moment about the Enduro world series.

I think running the Enduro alongside a DH World Cup is always going to make the Enduro not look as good or as exciting, as DH is live on a big screen and the crowds can easily access and watch on 1 course. However Maydena and Derby this year proved that Enduro racing can easily be as fun and exciting to watch as a DH or XC World Cup. The organisers of each round should take some tips from the Aussies.

The Enduro for the racers is as good as ever though with the level of skills, speed and competition at an all-time high. The courses in Chatel this weekend for the final round are amazing, although the Enduro course marking team really do need to stop taping out all the jumps on tracks that I can still ride at 51 with no problems and are open to the public in the bike park. This isn’t helping make our sport look good. ESO – this is a World Cup, if you can’t do a few jumps you shouldn’t really be racing!

At Nukeproof we believe racing at the world level in Enduro is a great place to test and develop our amazing range of Enduro bikes and the Nukeproof Mega has proven this over the years and alongside the Giga we have 2 very popular choices for Enduro bike customers.
Nigel Page

**Editor's Note: this quote came from before the public revelations of financial woes at Nukeproof's parent company Signa. We've followed up with the team but were told that nothing can be said at this time.

Lapierre Zipp Collective - It will come as no surprise that the Lapierre team are fully onboard for next season, we were told: "Enduro is a strong discipline and a big business for the brands, stronger than the Ebike XC or the XCM. So if tomorrow we plan to stop something, it will probably not be the enduro racing and the enduro world cups. Even if we have a lack of visibility and consideration compared to the XCO or the DHI... "

Orange Factory Racing -

bigquotesRacing is in our blood at Orange and our intention is for the team to continue for next season, there are a lot of pieces to pull together but hopefully you’ll see us between the tapes again next year.Orange

Trek Factory Racing - Pinkbike has been informed that Trek fully intends to continue racing Enduro World Cups and support Hattie Harnden.

After receiving responses from a number of teams, we contacted the race organisers at WBD for a comment and a response to some of the issues brought up by the teams. We were sent the following comment:

bigquotesThe 2023 season saw a record number of teams take part in the UCI Mountain Bike World Series. It’s perfectly normal year-on-year to see teams merge and change. We wish the teams, athletes and team management all the best throughout transfer season and are excited to see new 2024 team colours and line-ups.

Enduro is an ever-evolving racing format that has always been at the forefront of bike industry and trail innovation. In 2023, when enduro was elevated to UCI World Cup status, the format enjoyed a huge influx of extra event staff and a higher level of delivery than ever before, leading to one of the most incredible race seasons to date. Naturally, comparisons are drawn between formats and coverage, and in order to showcase all formats to the best of each sport, we will continue to focus on improving highlights production for enduro while continuing to upscale the live production for cross-country and downhill.

As part of this article we have also reached out to the Cannondale, Canyon, Polygon Factory Racing, Rocky Mountain and Yeti teams although at this time we have either received no response or were told there is no comment.

Who is currently without a team & looking for a setup?
Greg Callaghan in the clouds on stage 4

Following the news that multiple companies are closing down race teams for 2024 we reached out to the affected riders to see if they can share an update on how they have dealt with the news and what plans are building for next year.

Katy Winton - The Scottish Enduro racer was one of the first to suggest the end of GT Factory Racing publicly and after her statement on social media we reached out and were sent the following update: "I’m looking at all possibilities on and off the bike. I have nothing on the table at the moment, but I’m working on it."

Greg Callaghan - Another big name in Enduro racing currently on the hunt for a team is Greg Callaghan who wasn't able to share too much with us as it's still pretty early but he did say the aim is to be on a team but his plan B is to just create his own thing and keep on racing.

Zakarias Johansen - ex-Ibis team racer Zakarias Johnsen supplied Pinkbike with the following comment on his status for 2024.

bigquotesWith the entire bike industry slowing down we knew that the main sponsor and a relatively small bike brand was gonna have to cut their marketing / the race teams budget for next year. As a rider it's never a fun moment when you realize you're without a job for the upcoming season and what you love to do and have work so hard to be able to do as a job is no longer a sure thing. With many teams deciding to cut down their budgets at the same time it meant that there were more riders than normal looking for a ride and fewer teams to offer one. So it's not been easy and I have definitely had to prepare myself for the scenario that I might not be racing next year. It is what it is and sadly we riders don’t have much to say, it's the numbers that decide. Zakarias Johansen

Raphaela Richter - Another rider losing a team sport after the shutdown of the Ibis team is German racer Raphaela Richter. Luckily she has brighter news than most as while she is yet to sign a contract is in talks with a team for next year. We were given the following update.

bigquotesI still haven’t signed a contract yet but it looks really good to have found a team that I’m looking forward to working with next year. We‘re in finalizing some details and component deals these days. I feel like in that team I play a big role in some of the decision-making and I currently enjoy having somewhat more personal contact to future sponsors like I used to have when I was a privateer. Raphaela Richter

Ethan Craik - Along with the confirmation from GT, Ethan Craik has stated that it's true he is looking for something new next year and after an amazing 2nd-place at Mont-Sainte-Anne he will surely be in good standing to secure a contract. While Ethan was able to confirm he is on the market he was not able to share any extra details with us at this time.

Ryan Pinkerton - Another rider who saw great success with GT this season is Ryan Pinkerton. The Junior World Cup overall winner told Pinkbike that while he can't say where he will end up he did hint that something is in the works.

Evan Wall - Evan Wall is also a rider struggling to find something for 2024 as he told us he didn't have any interesting to share at the moment but he still plans to be at all of the races next year.

Cole Lucas - Following the shut-down of the Ibis team Cole Lucas is still without a setup for 2024 and told Pinkbike: "At the minute I have nothing set In stone for next year. Have had no luck with getting a team ride so am trying to organise my own setup at the minute. But even that is proving to be hard to try get some budget at any brand."

Jess Blewitt - A spot of good news is that the incredibly talented Jess Blewitt has confirmed to Pinkbike that she is signed to a new team in 2024 although that's all she could say for now.

2023 NAEC Race Day 1
Jill Kintner en route to winning the 2023 North American Enduro Cup.

Jill Kintner & Bryn Atkinson – After 11 years with Norco, Jill and Bryn are both currently without a bike sponsor for next year. Jill's list of accomplishments includes multiple Queen of Crankworx titles, and a long list of DH, enduro, and pumptrack victories. After making his name on the World Cup DH circuit, Bryn's become the king of cornering – there aren't many riders in the world that can make a bike move like he can.

We have heard plenty more rumours about next year's racing and are currently working on chasing down the facts. Expect more coming soon as the silly season continues.

New drinking game: take a shot each time a manufacturer says racing is in its roots/blood/DNA. Two shots if that manufacturer then cuts its racing program.
  • 49 10
If you cut my roots, do I not bleed my DNA?

MBAs don't care about root, blood, or DNA. They only care about bonuses today because they will be leaching from a new company tomorrow.

MBAs ruin everything.

@gaberoc: I think you need to better understand the people you disparage, before doing so.....

the "bean counters" of the world, do more good than harm. It's just you never hear about the hundreds of saved businesses from faulty, "passion driven" owners, who don't value being profitable so you can stay in business, but instead only hear about the ruthless, cold nature of pulling plugs when not doing so will bankrupt an entire company.

it's no differenent than a surgeon cutting necrotic tissue from a limb, maybe losing most of the limb, to save the life of a person.
  • 26 9
@Mtbdialed: All good until you're the limb! These are humans, not "beans", you sum up the exact problem by your own words, corporations do not value people, only numbers.
  • 17 0
@Mtbdialed: yup, but prudent financial planning and stripping & flipping and are two very different things...i think @gaberoc is referring to vulture capitalists rather than CPAs

@Bomadics: balancing act, if you don't pay enough attention to the numbers, there won't be a company left to employ the people
  • 13 1
@Mtbdialed: if the bean counters were actually so spot on they should have seen that the covid boom was temporary and not let the business push out far more product than would ever be needed for the next seasons. This would have saved them immensely in production costs, kept better standings with their distributers, as well as allowed their racing teams to have funding.
Alas it was all about the immediate bottom line and not the actual forethought of surviving the boom and bust that was covid.

@Mtbdialed: I have worked for two larger companies (1000+ employees) founded by engineers over the last 30 years. In both cases I watched as MBAs slowly replaced engineers in management and at the same time watched the focus switch from technical excellence and customer focus to ROI and a bunch of other financial metrics. Both companies floundered with poor product roadmaps, stagnation, and decline because of this change in focus. The MBAs figure they can just plug every company into a spreadsheet, cut expenses, raise prices, then magically money is made. I've never seen it last because the MBAs are afraid of risk and change so they cut any high risk or innovative research and development because they have no vision beyond the spreadsheet or the next 3 months. Everyone (besides upper management of course) is a replaceable resource unit. I saw many projects cancelled, then restarted years later in a rush because some other company found a market need that we were not addressing. If the projects had not been cancelled the companies I worked for would not have lost market share and would have continued to grow instead of having to cut staff.
It usually was some "passion project" that founded the company. The founders didn't spend months working on business plans, they saw a unique solution to a problem then built something.
  • 7 7
@Bomadics: it's not as simple as you seem to want to make it. So your solution is, let everyone die, instead of just some?

a corporation that is unprofitable, dies.
  • 14 5
@Mtbdialed: A comma, doesn't need to, go in, arbitrary, place. MBA.
  • 12 3
@Mtbdialed: thanks for stating the obvious, I generally assume that the people on here are intelligent, where you seem to assume that we are all stupid. Secondly, I don't come here for financial or corporate advice, so you should refrain from attempting to look like an expert in anything other than bike related issues, or just head over to a financial forum and trade barbs over there.

Most large corporations are notoriously corrupt, or at least uncaring, if you disagree that's fine It doesn't change the facts. I will ask you one question. Corporations on the planet are getting huge and powerful, just use Black Rock, Vanguard and State Street as prime examples. Is the planet getting better or worse? The corporate structure currently in place, no matter how many mean well, needs to be radically changed, or we are in for a 1984 scenario or worse. If you actually believe that these entities have your best interest in mind, then please go join them and we will see who is on the right side of history my friend. If it's is ok for them to kill us, then it's ok for us to want them dead.
  • 5 2
@nickfranko: I am not an MBA but if you are speaking about punctation I think it is better to use commas to deliniate where you want a pause for emphasis instead of just typing words with zero idea of where the writer meant to impart inflection.

good day, sir!
  • 4 2
@Bomadics: " I assume people are intelligent"... and also, "Most large corporations are notoriously corrupt, or at least uncaring"

same person typed both of these. In the same reply.

your cognative dissonance is showing, my good man! I can only assume that you meant the first quote for everyone but yourself????
  • 1 0
@Mtbdialed: To be fair, Citizens United aside, corporations aren't people. Not to mention that intelligence is orthogonal to corruption & empathy.
  • 2 0
@Mtbdialed: I actually agree with some of your sentiments regarding corporate Darwinism, but for someone so closely policing punctuation, would have thought you could properly spell "cognitive."
  • 2 0
@nickfranko: It was Bromadics who went hard on the commas:

"All good until you're the limb! These are humans, not "beans", you sum up the exact problem by your own words, corporations do not value people, only numbers."
  • 2 0
@Mtbdialed: but that's partly the point - the corporation isn't people, it isn't a person. It doesn't actually die.

To add, a 'necessary evil ' argument is singularly naïve or disingenuous. Corporations are a lot like a mutated monarchy, where there are better rulers and worse rulers. Strangely, almost invariably, the better rulers were those who focused on the wellbeing of the people that made up the kingdom rather than seeing them as statistics that impacted outcomes.

I think most peoples distaste for these announcements is amplified by the subtext that the corporation mouthpieces are saying whatever they think is needed to avoid this decision negatively affect sales.
  • 3 0
 @Bomadics: well that escalated quickly.....
  • 24 1
@Bomadics: "These are humans, not "beans""

Then... then why do people call us human beans?

Checkmate.
  • 6 0
@gaberoc: Have MBA. Can confirm. Totally useless and stupid.
  • 3 1
@GTBicycles are crazy not to keep a team going on the DH circuit, the new bike looks great and clearly works great with Ryan Pinkerton showing us that all season. They should sign Danny Hart and keep the programme alive.
  • 8 0
@lifeofloon: I think we need to take accountants aka ‘bean counters’ out of the conversation here. People seem to have a misconception about what accountants do. They generally are not responsible for major decision making. Accountants in simple terms keep track of the revenue and expenses and provide that data (financial statements, budgets, etc) to the stakeholders of the company.

It’s then CEOs, COOs, etc that make the decisions. ‘Bean counters’ don’t tell you what can and can’t be done, the numbers do. They simply provide those numbers.
  • 1 1
@sino428: Accountants have massive influence on the decisions of a company. To say all they do is present the facts is not a true reflection of the corporate finance function in a modern company. There's a CFO at that executive table and they have ever-increasing influence over the decisions of corporations.
  • 2 2
@brainbckt: re-read what I wrote and was responding to. I was not the person policing punctuation. Also, I am very very sorry to make a spelling mistake. I see how that invalidates everything I have said or will say in the future. I will go delete my account now.
  • 3 0
@m-i-l-e-s: that......that is good. kudos. lmao
  • 1 0
@Mtbdialed: as it should. isn't that the marketplace sorting it out?
  • 6 0
@gaberoc: MBA is basically a white collar trade school degree. I know and have worked with quite a few MBAs, and they couldn't think outside of what they were taught in school, if their very lives depended on it.

They do however possess enough overconfidence that they could power a small city with it
  • 1 0
@Bomadics: the point is that a body has more than one limb. To forsake the dozens or hundreds of jobs for the sake of a few racers proves the point the professor is trying to make.
  • 3 0
@roggey: quit dwelling on the the obvious, I am not debating the need for corporate triage . My point is don't trust a corporation, they will lie cheat and steal to get their own way. Then as soon as the profit is sucked out of the person/town/landscape they will drop and run for the next gold mine.

Local business is the key, keep the owners invested in the community because that is where they live and work too. The global corporations are the problem that is why we are seeing so many bike companies fail. They got greedy and don't care about anything but the profit and the end of the month, so they will cut anything and anybody that makes the numbers look bad to shareholders.
  • 2 0
@jonemyers: Not all MBAs are equal. It's the crappy ones that can't see innovation, take risks, focus on customers and creating. These MBAs are easy to spot, too. They all put "MBA" in their LinkedIn profile name.
  • 1 0
@Bomadics: the Jack Welch-ification of the bike industry. Hopefully it doesn't happen but when specialized starts optioning made up financial instruments with your stumpy Evo it's time to find a new hobby.
  • 1 0
It’s unfortunate to see racers lose a contract. This industry is clearly in a tight spot and I’m certain along with racers losing contracts; many engineers, PLMs, assembly techs, marketers, etc. will also lose their jobs over the coming months. It’s unfortunate for all, not just the racers.
  • 2 1
@Bomadics: Sorry for being obvious, but you are slashing and burning your way through this without making much sense. You have a somewhat idealist view of the whole thing. We get it, you want the little guy/gal to win. I don't think anyone's arguing against that - least of all me - but you seem to want to look smart and punk. So... go down with the ship, then? Support racing, bankrupt the company and everyone loses? Or never let a company get big enough to support more than one thing at once? Are you spending more to buy locally and responsibly, without fail, or are you whining about high prices everywhere? No matter how idealistic you want to be, you don't get to have it all. I'm with you that MBAs and the C-suite are terrible for the soul of our sport, but at some point, reality does step in, too. I also agree that greed is ruining things. But welcome to a capitalist society. f*ck us all.
You're arguing in favour of local business, but...that completely invalidates supporting a global race team, sorry.

The UCI and its consequences have been a disaster to the mountain biking world

@Struggleteam: I don't feel "nobody is buying bikes". People buy bikes much more then they did before 2019. Precisely: People don't buy bikes as the big pot-bellied stakeholders expected them to buy when they invested their money into the cycling industry visualizing their next milking cow.

Across the board bike sales are down. As just one of many references/sources: m.youtube.com/watch?v=qHO7BnY-FwY&pp=ygUQI210YnRyaWJlcG9kY2FzdA%3D%3D

@Struggleteam: But one could argue that the uci had a golden opportunity to market, push and grow bike racing during this period which I imagine would certainly help with sales, however it seems to have merely gone backwards.
  • 4 0
@tajtigabor: The industry doesn't seem to understand we cannot all buy new 6-10k bikes every year, let alone once.

For example the less expensive trail worthy bike from Ibis, the Ripmo AF MSRP was 3.5K. They are now on sale at 2.6K for the cheapest config which is nice but is still the max I have ever paid for a trail bike.

Enduro in the old days was excellent and exciting. Going on epic, full day rides with minimal practice (like we all dream of doing) in exotic locales is amazing. THEN they wanted to condense it, and package it into a DH-lite product and all of a sudden everyone complains about the format and how it's not commercially viable. Enduro should be more like the Trans series than it is now. Maybe a shorter weekend format than Trans, but it can get it's mojo back if they stop trying to fit the square peg of what the sport actually is in a round hole.

@Rudy2455: Enduro racing just needs to go back to what is used to be. Variable formats, variable terrain, non-pro entries encouraged, held as part of larger events. Not this pseudo-DH the World Cup's turned into that nobody can take part in and nobody can watch. The EWS at Tweedlove was amazing, the EWS at Whistler and Finale was amazing too, that's the kind of thing they should be aiming for.

@Rudy2455: as it's currently formatted. I'm a huge believer that it could ultimately be the most interesting and fun race format to follow and be involved with, if it's done correctly.

If enduro is going to be at the same venues as DH why not run the "queen stage" down the DH track so it can get full media coverage? I understand scheduling would be difficult, but if the cameras are already setup, seem like an easy way to get more media.
  • 2 1
They did that at leogang, it was like maybe half the track if that and they always tape jumps out for enduro so be pretty boring to watch.
  • 1 0
This would be a great way to get more coverage for enduro and show what the bikes can do. Because currently the biggest competition for enduro is youtube. Not many people would even know the names of enduro racers let alone watch it. Having the race at the DH venue allows for some comparisons to made as well as having all the cameras there ready to go. It would make for some good viewing and likely get more eyeballs on the race.

I get the feeling that Danny's bike held him back the past few years. I'd love to see him sign with a team that can give him a proven bike. As far as I can see, what happened with Danny is similar to what happened with Gwin when he first signed with Intense, where he's been riding a bike that might not be competitive at the world cup level. I also remember reading a DH bike review on Pinkbike a couple years back that compared some top bikes to the Cube rig. The verdict was basically that the Cube was the least ridable bike of the bunch. I think Danny's still one of the most gifted riders on the circuit and I'd love to see him at -- or near -- the top again.
  • 33 2
I hate to say it but I think it's having a family that's holding him back. You need to go balls out to win, and no responsible father like as Danny is would feel comforatble taking the degree of risk needed to win. It doesn't matter what bike, suspension, tyres he's on. He won't be back at the top because he's too mature. All credit to Danny, who is an awesome dude and probably my favourite racer ever for the 2016 season which was all time. The 2012 world's win was stellar, but in 2016 he owned the field. I know Gwinner won the world cup that year but Danny had more wins.

"As we all know the industry is struggling a bit at the moment due to overstock after the covid boom..."

Here's a thought; sell the overstock for less $. Moving more units at fewer dollars must beat selling fewer units for top dollar, no? Stimulate the market by lowering prices.... I feel like that'd be a successful move.

I agree 100% with nateb. The over inflated bike prices are turning this into a prestigious sport.

  • 5 0
@Murder-One: Same here. And most of all, since I can't seem to get my bikes sold, I can't afford to pull the trigger on even the ones on sale.
  • 30 0
No good. I've got the money to buy a new bike right now, but I'm not because bikes stopped getting better. Aside from the UDH I can't think of a single thing from the last 5-6 years that makes bikes as a whole better. It's all been E-bikes and wacky proprietary stems and steering dampers (and Super Boost, which is just... super I guess). With the fashion for thru-headset cables I'd argue a lot of current bikes are worse than my 2018 now. Money is tight for everyone, it's very hard to justify £7k+ on a new bike that's going to be a long slack 29er with tubeless wheels, 1X gearing and a dropper post... just like my current bike.
  • 9 1
@Fix-the-Spade: Nailed it. Even the wild geometry is moving back towards what was around a couple of years ago. Bikes with "conservative" geometry then, were actually pretty good.

When I ride a new bike I want to drop double what I paid for the last one on, it needs to blow me away. I've ridden plenty, but none that make my 2018 27.5 feel terrible yet.
  • 6 2
@Fix-the-Spade: This is why I’m so happy I ride a Raaw Madonna. I can upgrade to UDH at a very reasonable price then put extra money into other upgrades. The bike is still completely relevant.
  • 7 0
Yup, as much as people like to blame UCI the situation has everything to do with the greedy bike industry. They bent us over the barrel during COVID due to "supply chain issues". Really worked us over with no lube whatsoever. Now when tables are turned....hold on b!tches.

No sympathy for the industry here.
  • 2 0
@Fix-the-Spade: Definitely in in my case. By pure blind luck, I revamped my quiver in 2019 and early 2020 - I received my Spot Ryve 115 the week of lock-down in March 2020. I rode my 2019 Megatower at a bike park this past weekend and never felt the need for a new bike even on tech trails. I have a 2019 Chameleon hardtail as well which has a stronger following than the model that replaced it. I'm quite happy with what I have.
  • 3 0
The bike companies need to justify the rate of increases in prices over the last 5-7 years. I bet they can't. Based on inflation the bike I bought in 2016 cost $6000 US today that would be about $7700 not the $9000 that MFG's want today.
  • 3 0
 @dhrracer:
This. I got a new bike in mid 2018, RRP was $6000aud. I paid $4500 AUD for it.
In 2022 you could still buy the exact same bike, frame and components etc as a 22 model for $7500aud - no discounts anywhere.

Same company currently has up to 40% off some of their 2023 models that it can't shift.

They took the piss out of consumers and are now paying the price.

I’ve only been mountain biking for 20 years, but none of those years have been anywhere close to next year, from a strictly fun-on-the-dirt standpoint. Bikes and trails are so good right now, I feel you really have to go out of your way to have anything but the best time every time out.
But, yeah. Sucks so much.

Welcome to the annual pink poaching of the dedicated Vital forum thread regarding team rumours. Send Vital some beer. Smile
  • 6 0
In fairness to Pinkbike they're actually contacting riders and companies and trying to verify information, actually learn what's going on, and reporting back.

Worth noting that in the Vital Team Rumours thread frequently the info drops come from the MUTN podcast or other forums, it's not like it's all original facts/info springing up from within.
  • 2 0
@CleanZine: Yep, this time they actually did some work, instead of monitoring the Vital forum and cherry picking from there, which is what they did in the last couple of years. The forum is user driven and everybody throws over there what they head in various places, that is the beauty of it. Not to mention the fact that there are riders and industry people who are participants in the talks. It's about the passion for racing and the racing scene.

By the way, the reporting back is a few weeks old, as it can be clearly seen above.
  • 10 0
Here's an idea: Find sponsors outside the bike industry! It works in Road and CX and it used to work in MTB (it's been a while though). To rely solely on industry sponsors keeps budgets low in good times (there's just not as much money in bikes as some commenters want to believe), and breaks up teams in bad times. It's simply bad business, and apparently people suffer from bad business.

And this is already going on in XC, with both traditionally more roadie teams now having a presence there (Ineos, Alpecin), but brands like Mondraker having a vegetable/ seed producer/ whatnots and shoe brands in their team name (Primaflor-Mondraker-Genuins Racing). But for some reason it stops immediately when crossing into the gravity focused side of biking.
  • 1 0
@JiminOz: That doesn't mean Jack to me...
  • 2 0
@donimo: Owning a company that does sponsor teams in a different sport, most of the time its about coverage, and opportunuity for entertainment/influence if your own company has no association with the industry its supporting. XC racing provides a far better opportunity for business in this regard with the racers doing laps so theres greater coverage, compared DH and Enduro with a couple of minutes with fast flashing imagery not to mention spectators having to walk up and down a mountain to watch it live. In road racing, unless its time trials you have groups of riders all in the same livery which is fantastic promotion for a brand/business. Its easy to keep our mountain bike heads on and think that what we perceive as the pinicale of our sport with DH racing and to some extent enduro, that companies would love to get involved. Sure theres some crazy companies that would love the association but perhaps the cost would be to damaging to the culture/ethos of our high adrenaline sport - imagine if the all the bike pits became like formula 1 or MotoGP, where you need silly money to walk around, venues having to up security, client entertainment areas etc etc. At the moment even the heavily backed teams like Santa Cruz and Commencal still run out of lorries parked up on the side of a mountain and usually have the whole team helping with the set up! And theres nothing wrong with that. Theres got to be a happy medium to keep racing going
  • 2 0
@sivraj: Yeah absolutely, I'm not questioning the reasons behind why this isn't happening in large amounts in DH/ enduro. But I have to agree with TinuKu this being one opportunity. And I'm not expecting to see several companies going huge and becoming the main sponsors for some DH teams all of a sudden, but I could say it's a bit odd there really isn't any of this going on with the gravity stuff maybe with smaller sponsors. Sure the visibility isn't the same, but maybe getting involved also requires a little less money.

The exception of course is (as someone pointed out this season) Dorval AM - supporting fairly big name Commencal riders - which is in fact an asset management company. So I guess they indeed see some financial opportunities in the sport, that literally being their thing.

Bike industry is tanking. One of the easiest targets for line item counters is the race program.

First things cut.. Race. Marketing.

When sales starts complaining because they don't have any help... they'll reinvest in both. It's a cycle.

The companies that don't panic and just adjust their expectations are the ones that will come out the other side way way ahead. Companies have been making record profits and now they're just... profitable.... and they're panicking. All you need to do is realize that profits are profits. You can't make record profits every quarter forever. Especially when you haven't been reinvesting that money this entire time.

The smart companies have taken that money and invested in marketing and product development. Taken slightly smaller profit margin numbers and invested in the brands. The dumb ones have shuffled it around and fed the board of directors and stock holders maximized profit margins with little to no reinvestment.

I think we'll start seeing a lot of brands going under and/or brands that haven't been market share leaders will start to become market share leaders.

  • 4 0
It'd be an interesting fit. She seems to perform best when she's more care free? YT's team seems to be more of that ethos than Spesh, which (for better or for worse) does put riders in the pressure cooker.

Spesh also has 3 high profile (and likely high paid) riders... so taking on more would be tough. I'd imagine Vali is searching for the biggest paycheck in women's racing so she'll need a team with room in the budget.
  • 5 0
@ridedigrepeat: Not only do I feel Vali doesn't necessarily fit the current Specialized team personality wise, making her indeed an interesting fit for them (I don't know how much thought the team actually gives to this while hiring riders, but they've somehow seemed to nail it eSpecially well). But also I feel like she needs to have a team where she really is the number one rider, not needing to battle for that role and her position in the team and fully focus on battling herself to keep getting better. (Although I'd still love to see Specialized sign a woman on their #1 team.)
  • 7 2
It's crazy to think someone is actually letting Vali go. You're just passing on the next years of Worldcup dominance. I personally don't like her going to YT but whatever is best for her
  • 10 0
You can always let someone go if someone wants to go. Maybe she liked the YT bike better than the Trek bike?
  • 4 0
She can go where she wants, contractually. What are your issues with her returning to the team that gave her her start at 13 and riding basically the same bike she already won on? I kinda thought it might be Atherton but you can't have 2 queens in one castle, I suppose.
  • 1 1
i was hoping she goes to yeti.
  • 4 0
YT signed her when she was like 12 or 13. If the only reason she left was money.... and they're willing to give her the money and let her develop a bike she likes... would not surprise me. Or maybe she wants to do other things and Trek won't let her... YT will. Who knows what goes into these decisions sometimes.
  • 2 0
@vinay: to be clear I'm just not a fan of the YT bikes but obviously she should do whats best for her ... just some unsolicited opinion on my part. I'll be rooting for her wherever she goes !
Be interesting to see if she joins the mob or a new team is formed that runs on SRAM. Switching to Fox would be a huge change for her amidst all the other changes
  • 2 0
@asapyohanes: I wonder, is it such a big deal for a pro rider to move on to another suspension manufacturer? It didn't seem to bother the Syndicate when they moved from SRAM to Shimano/Fox components. It seems to me a different bike matters more than a different suspension brand. Especially now that RockShox stanchions have gradually increased in diameter (so closer to that of the Fox 40). I can imagine it might have been a bigger change back when a Boxxer had 32mm stanchions!
  • 4 4
i'm not too happy watching her going back to YT either. here in germany, YT has an image somewhere between methbikers and boomercringe. like that 45 year old unemployed toothless dude hanging at the skatepark with his basecap backwards. plus the mob didn't always treat vali too good in the past... she gave some insights on the in&out podcast some years ago.

  • 1 0
@nullzwo: Strange, a few KM south of Germanyland people don't feel like that at all!
  • 2 1
@korev: Plus even if it were true, I think the choice of athlete is to nudge the image in the targeted direction. Like if you want someone more wild and loose, sign Ratboy. If you want more of a serious competition minded racer, indeed get someone like Vali. Initially of course the brand was developing a more "wild" image with athletes like Mats Haugen and, later on, Andreu Lacondeguy. Then they wanted to develop a more serious racer minded image, complete forgot the "young talent" bit and signed an established top racer like Gwin. It seems like they're still trying to find their image. Maybe trying to hard at times. Now that they've lost their original approach and image (I think Privateer currently is closer to their original approach) they're up against some tough competition. And in my book they'll always be losing it against a brand like Commencal which is constantly bringing young talent (pun intended) in the spotlight and which actually seems to be caring about their athletes. Max Commencal is there at the races, cheering and celebrating from the front of the crowd. YT has become a bit of a faceless corporation.
  • 5 2
The flight from Enduro seems pretty rational. The tiddlywinks crowd might envy the coverage they get, but I doubt anybody else does. Somebody needs to come up with a more spectator and viewer friendly competition format for these magnificent machines. Perhaps a variety of disciplines like a MTB decathlon - for example DH, Uphill and mass-start XC - all timed and using the same frame, shock and fork. Shouldn't be too hard for some Enduro boffin from the UCI. A bonus would be everybody knowing which bikes were genuine all-rounders. At the end of the day we wouldn't need any bike reviewers.
  • 5 0
Let 'em go 10 at a time on the same course....last one standing, or first across the line wins! I would pay a fortune to watch those battles.

The suggestion has been made many times by many people:

Re-seed the order last stage and run it with full coverage, similar to DH. You'd get great coverage of the riders, an exciting finish, and a good reason for spectators to congregate at the end.

Making is live may be the hard part... but even if there is a few hour delay and edited coverage, it'd still be way better than what we have now.

@ridedigrepeat: IMO that's just tinkering - and a recipe for another failure to launch.
You'll still have 20 mins of action spread over a couple of mountain sides for a couple of days. And you'll have exactly the same difficulties filming it. DOA

@tigerfish50: They definitely should also stick with more varied tracks and different venues. Having the same venues every year is fine for DH because fans learn the courses and big features. Having the same venues for enduro is lame because its more about the scenery and location as a whole. There are very few iconic enduro courses that fans recognize.

Enduro peaked when they were doing massive adventure races in Chile, etc. Now its just a bunch of mini DH races on the same courses over and over with zero adventure and zero mystique.

I'd be very down for an MTB Omnium. Test the strengths of the best all-around rider.

Enduro is an excellent participant sport but at the moment a terrible spectator sport, and it needs to fix that if they want money to poor in. I wish I had a good idea to share. I want the EWS to keep being a thing and want the phenomenal athletes participating to make $$$

@mtmc99: Not in Maydena, Wicklow and Derby it isn't

I've been watching DH racing a long time. a few suggestions; 1. charge a nominal fee for spectators, just a little bit, and give it 100% to the venue. 2. athletes, MENTION YOUR SPONSORS in post-race interviews. it doesn't need to be obnoxious, just a quick plug "...my YT Tues was set up perfect today..." or "the maxxis Assegai was the perfect tire for these conditions..." it goes a long way to getting the sponsors some recognition and encourages them to sponsor you. seems so obvious but they never do it. actually more surprising the sponsors don't force them to do it.

Seriously, plug it in like a nascar driver. Can’t help but thank the crew Yeti factory racin for my red bull powered, maxxis rollin, shimano driven, fox cushioned, yeti race bike. They set er up real nice like. Flew down this mountain like a hungry cougar chasin down its prey.
  • 8 4
 1. That’s why the sponsors are on the jersey.

2. The lack of that kind of polished brand ambassador trained horseshit in interviews is why I watch DH instead of, say, NASCAR.
  • 3 0
@sfarnum: Yea everyone knows they are getting paid to say that kind of stuff and it just comes off hollow. Wear the sponsors on the jersey and perform well while using the products and consumers will draw their own conclusions.
  • 2 0
@sfarnum: or AMA MX and SX. Those interviews were such a pita when I watched 15 years ago, can't imagine it's gotten any better.

Mountain biking no longer makes any sense when the top talent in the world is struggling for support but someone who can barely ride posting the most cringe worthy YouTube videos is getting full budget to travel to festivals and lead fat people riding their 180mm e-bike couches down green trails on group rides . That’s it. I’m over it.

More coverage of the detonation of the top-10 Elite Women EDR field please
Are women disproportionately affected by the state of the industry as it relates to professional racing? My guess is yes.

Gee and Rachel off Atherton, Dan thinks Gee crashes too much and Rachel’s recent success overshadows his digging endeavors
  • 3 0
Is it just me or do some of these team statements seem disingenuous? Like, it’s not a competition to see whose team is liquidated last. No one’s immune to the market.
  • 9 4
Vali to Atherton? Now THAT would shake things up.

From his Insta, it looks like Danny is changing disciplines and racing unicycles...
  • 3 1
Danny has found a team, and we will see GT at the races, just not as a factory team. It’s tough times ahead, unfortunately.

"...the format enjoyed a huge influx of extra event staff and a higher level of delivery than ever before..." I think WBD must have been watching a different sport in 2023!

My first bike was a GT and raced them in BMX for years back in the 80's to early 90's but they were officially dead to me since the mid 2000's when they became big box store junk.

Pinkbike racing should lowball Danny.. just a season to tie him over and inspire the up and comers
  • 4 1
Ethan Craik and Pinkerton are gonna get some calls for sure. Pinkerton better be going to Pinkbike Racing.
  • 3 0
I really don't see that happening. Pinkerton is likely going to jump straight onto one of the major teams. Talking about a guy that will instantly be competing for top 15's. I wouldn't be surprised to see Syndicate make a play for him. But I think... if I were betting... he ends up on Intense.

Right when GT had a DH team was having a breakout season. But I'm not surprised by the business decisions because GT slashed their product offerings by a 1/3-1/2 compared to last year.

Gonna be bummed if Rocky Mountain and Cannondale bow out, unless news has already been released that I missed
  • 2 0
Remi said on instagram that Rocky was staying around for the time being. Cannondale seem like a relatively low budget team anyways, so I'd be suprised to see them go...

I would have thought Specialized might be interested in Vali, maybe PB racing can snag her Smile

As high profile as she is now, she can go anywhere she wants, but I imagine the biggest pay check + most development opportunity is where she would go.

Nukeproof says they're racing 2024 but didn't they just announce shutting down as a company? Or am I confusing them with another?
  • 8 1
 Right below the Nukeproof quote.

**Editor's Note: this quote came from before the public revelations of financial woes at Nukeproof's parent company Signa. We've followed up with the team but were told that nothing can be said at this time.

In other news, no word on their roster for next year.
