Qualifying Results from the Les Gets DH World Cup 2021

Jul 2, 2021
by Ed Spratt
Good seeing Brendan Fairclough pushing hard during timed runs.

After a wild practice and Timed Training session on the fresh Les Gets track, riders faced a real challenge to find consistent speed on course. Troy Brosnan and Nina Hoffmann went fastest in Timed Training, but qualifying is where we will really see how fast riders can hit the new course.

In the Junior racing, Phoebe Gale and Jordan Williams came out fastest on the rough and rugged track with some decent winning margins against the rest of the field. Jordan Williams, the fastest rider in the Junior Men's category has already broken past the top training time of Troy Brosnan by nearly six seconds.

Myriam Nicole dominates the Elite Women's field on the Les Gets steeps as she goes over seven seconds faster than Vali Höll to set the top qualifying time. Camille Balanche crosses the line in third and becomes the only other Elite Woman to come within 10 seconds of Myriam.

After a slower start to the season, Loic Bruni looks to be back on form in Les Gets as he goes fastest by 0.631 seconds. Angel Suarez pilots his Commencal to second place with Loris Vergier rounding out the top three. Loris was green at all splits before crossing the line 0.841 back so it looks like he could be the one to beat tomorrow if he gets a clean run. First-round winner Troy Brosnan was around half a second off the pace at the first two splits before ending the day with a DNF. We hope Troy hasn't had any serious problems today and we will see him back between the tape for finals tomorrow.

Check out the full results below.

Reece Wilson really is one of ‘the guys’ now. Stoked!

Weird, I swore I saw him freeriding in BC just yesterday.

@pistol2ne: and there it is. like clockwork

Is he still on flats ? Read last race he went onto flats?

Feels good to have a Scotsman up there.

Also 13 seconds between winning qualifying and not qualifying, Jesus that’s tight

@Molesdigmyjumps: He goes back and forth depending on the weather! Dont think he will be for Les Gets

 @madescape: does he?

Man, big ups to Thibaut Daprela. Smashes his face twice in a week and STILL qualifies for the big show!
  • 9 0
Yeah, How mentally strong you must be to take the beating twice in a week and still be able to put on a show in qualies... Especially on a tricky track like this one.
99% of mere mortals would still be sobbing from the 1st hit Smile
  • 17 4
It's ridiculous, he shouldn't be riding after the big hits his brain took
  • 1 0
@purplegorillaz: doctor sayd it was ok, I suppose
  • 14 0
Commencal said a few docs gave him the ok. Commencal seems to treat their athletes well, I mean most stay with the team for their whole career. They don't seem the type of team to pressure an injured racer to ride. It's completely possible to break a nose without getting a concussion. That said, I didn't see the crashes or anything so I could be wrong. Regardless, Daprela's a gnarly dude!
  • 8 2
@purplegorillaz: Always interesting to have internet experts who know what people should do better than the doctor they see with their 10 years of studies
  • 4 0
Is he a teenager? If so that would explain it.
  • 2 1
Damn, definitely didn't expect him to be racing! What a beast.

@purplegorillaz: party at the front, brains in the back

Agreed, probably helps having Nicolas Vouilloz in your corner.

only pompom and Jess Blewitt doing the road gap apparently.

85% rain chance starting at 2pm in Les Gets tomorrow. I hope that gets pushed back and bit and we have a fair race rather than the first guys going down in the dry while the last get the slop.

I mean it sucks but that’s racing my dude, can’t control the weather..

@abueno: totally, and it's to be expected in the Alps in the summer. But a fast track for everyone would be pretty great.

Hopefully Brendog has done enough to qualify. - 4secs faster than Troys Gold run yesterday. Conditions look sunny on a few insta photos I've seen.

Bulldog a full 5 secs faster than Brendog

Anyone see Angel's time in the 'on track' section? I didn't see any green on the board and then he suddenly leapt into first!
  • 2 0
@thingswelike: all green at each split when he ran
  • 3 0
Loic found almost a second between the last split and the finish!

@snomaster: Reece found it too, only rider not to lose time to him.

Aaron Gwin Qualifying 30th and his team mate struggling again and not qualifying for the finals in 73rd, all the preseason hype and video posts etc seem to be hot air, Im not a Gwin fan but are these tracks so difficult for the Americans, Luca Shaw is right up there...
  • 33 1
At this point one starts to question what that team is doing. Maybe too many "not usual" parts and sponsors? Bad tires? Who knows. Neko was way faster a few years back and Gwin is Gwin. Moir was fast, then got on that team and struggled, went to Canyon and he now looks like his old self. It's hard to tell why. For sure it would be better if Gwin was in the mix fighting for wins. I say a few pre-season races wouldn't hurt him.
  • 10 1
Luca qualified 12, do you think it's a bad result?
  • 6 0
 That's quite intense.
  • 12 0
@ORTOGONAL555: Dak is up at the top too. He Luca and Neko train and ride so much together. Yes Dak has gotten really fast these past two years but I just can't understand how Neko would be so far behind those two if something else wasn't going on.
  • 17 0
Maybe the Intense bike just isn't competitive enough... ?
  • 5 0
In that podcast he did, he said he bought or is renting a house in a different location to his main house that allowed him to train in conditions more akin to the majority of world cup weather conditions and tracks. He does sound like a bit of a workaholic, so maybe now he cannot focus on just riding as much as he used to. End of the day, he is still capable to winning.

Is Aaron Gwin even trying any more? I think he's just doing the minimum to show up, no actual dreams of winning or podium-ing anymore.
  • 6 0
His other teammate - Seth Sherlock qualified 34th
  • 7 1
 Don't they ride Kenda tires?
  • 3 0
@teamdoa: He also said in that podcast that bike isn't where he wants it, and doesn't know if he can get what he wants out of a modern race bike with the VPP
  • 2 2
@ORTOGONAL555: Maybe it is the VPP frames? VPP is great for all mountain and XC suspension platforms, but not the most active on the downhills. Perhaps, Intense needs to make some non VPP prototypes for their DH and Enduro bikes just to test.
  • 20 7
@tacklingdummy: Doesn’t seem to stop Minnaar. Gwin is done. He’s never recovered from those crashes he had a few years back.
  • 8 1
@tacklingdummy: Right, because clearly Minnaar and (last two seasons) Vergier couldn't do anything with it either.
  • 8 5
@ORTOGONAL555: What about Angel Suarez? Racers seem to blossom when they get out from under Aaron's shadow.
  • 5 0
Dak in 8th and Luca in 12th
  • 5 6
It’s not the rider. It’s the bike.
  • 3 2
@jclnv: True, it's not the bike - not at nearly ten seconds back. He just isn't on form. And Neko - 2 for 2 in not qualifying, but he was never a consistent top tier rider at WC events. He's good on American soil, when Luca, Dak and Aaron aren't racing.
  • 6 1
@Paco77: Maybe rename the bike to Subdued or Lackadaisical?
  • 1 0
@viniadhv: He literally used Luca being up the timing boards as an example of an American competing well...
  • 2 2
@jclnv: VPP is totally different riding bike. Gwin still might not be comfortable with it. The suspension platform makes a difference, albeit small, but enough to make a difference in racing results when there are such small margins between riders.
  • 3 0
 @jclnv: yup, Gwinnger
  • 5 0
Whatever is going on, it clearly is not working. First year of the M29 and Jack/Dean/Charlie seemed to have some decent results. Switch all the parts and such, and it seems there is a 5% slowdown across the board. Tinkering with a new prototype and now it seems even slower. Or, perhaps the focus isn't here anymore. I really want to keep cheering for Gwin and Neko but they continue to show no fire or aggressiveness with their runs. Only highlight from that team is Seth at this point, who laid down a solid run for a young kid in his first year in the big boy races. My take is they need to change everything (except Seth) and add some of their young guns that are riding their bikes in the SoCal area right now with good results.
  • 4 0
it’s wild, they both look so unstable and slow in every video clip. they pop up in vital raw and they look like fawns on a frozen lake.
  • 11 0
@RCederholm: Hard to guess whether it is the bike or the riders. Jack, Dean and Charlie were my favourite team that year as they all seemed to have a really good chemistry and atmosphere- something that I think adds a lot to riders experience. I was disappointed they dismantled such a good thing to pay for Gwin. Maybe Gwin has his house, his wife, his cars, etc and the fire isn't there the same as it was. Maybe priorities have shifted? He always struck me as a guy who loves winning but not necessarily mountain biking- not to take away from the fact he is clearly amazing on a bike. Gwin and John seem to be a bit of an island on a team and do their own thing. Would love to see Neko place higher as he has always been an awesome rider and ambassador for the sport but the level is so high right now.
  • 4 0
Came here to find this comment. In the past in threads like this I've said give him a chance because in 2019 he had a 5th/6th and last year 6th in Maribor and 4th in Lousa, both "real" DH tracks but he has just looked plain slow this year, moving backwards at an alarming pace. He looks super fit, so it's either age, motivation or time on the bike maybe? Maybe too much non-bike stuff in his life who knows. If he can't get back to consistent top 5 (or even 10) results this season you gotta wonder what he does going forward. Then again he is part owner in the team so...
  • 4 0
@tacklingdummy: Please explain the kinematic differences. What part of the LR, AS or AR do you think is causing the issue from your observations?
  • 2 0
@tacklingdummy: lol, poor Syndicate and Giant riders Big Grin
  • 5 0
So sad Aaron is not at his level from back then. I guess it's difficult to be at the top level for more than 5 years. More than being dominant you have to avoid injuries (Greg Minnaar is a f*cking god of MTB DH).
  • 3 0
@jclnv: VPP has a lot of pedal kickback in heavy tech that is not easiest to get used to and debatable if it decreases traction in heavy tech. I think it does decrease traction in heavy tech. I have owned 7 VPP bikes (Intense, Santa Cruz). I really like VPP bikes or I wouldn't have owned 7 of them (Intense, Santa Cruz). They are great all-mountain bikes. VPP pedals well, but with my experience with them, without a doubt they have much more pedal kickback in heavy tech than other suspension platforms that I have owned and demo'd. VPP is not the most plush planted suspension platform out there.
  • 3 0
@jeffpegan: nah, he was fast then. His shoulders were F'd and are finally fixed. I do believe it was all he could do to keep them in just riding the bike. If he stays upright and gets a clean run then he just might win this weekend.
  • 2 0
@RCederholm: I'm wondering if it's the tracks they practice on.... Those trails in So Cal near Intense HQ and out east at Windrock don't seem to be even close to as radical as real WC tracks. I think the Intense Team needs to move to Europe to spend real time training and riding those super radical trails. Look at the Frenchies. They're ALL so freaking fast, because they live out there! Maybe we have that kind of stuff in the US, but it's not where Aaron trains or Neko....
  • 3 0
@mybaben: I have personally talked to Dakota at Windrock though, and he said the rock is gnarlier than WC tracks haha
  • 1 0
@captainfalafel: That's shocking that he would say that and very puzzling. I mean we've seen the races and practice vids at Rock, and we just saw Leogang and Les Gets... There is NO way the Rock is as rad as those places. Am I missing something here?
  • 1 0
@mybaben: you should go to windrock, you will be pleasantly shocked. It's hands down the hardest tracks on the east coast. The stuff you see them racing is just a small sample of what that Mt has.
  • 1 0
@MikeGruhler: That's good, but then we need to figure out what's going with the Intense team... I still don't think So Cal has what Aaron needs to be competitive for WC. In fact, I don't know if you had a chance to watch, but during Aaron's run Eliot Jackson was making comments related to what I'm saying. He was comparing Aaron to the Frenchies and how much they travel around and practice vs. AG staying home and practicing. I think AG needs to go spend a lot more training in Europe.
  • 2 0
@mybaben: it's so funny that you're saying he needs to travel to Europe to get faster. He literally just talked about exactly that with Spomer over on vitalmtb.com on a recent podcast. It may shine a bit of insight on the Gwinner and your concerns on his training and results. Spoiler..he's training in So Cal, Montana and Windrock. If the "Rock" isn't good enough for WC training then how does Dakota who's from Flint, Michigan keep out placing the rest of his training partners? Gwin included. Sometimes people are slow, sometimes there fast. This shit ain't easy or we'd all be doing it!
  • 1 0
@MikeGruhler: I'll try to give it a listen this week. So does Aaron say he's going to go Europe more often? It is interesting to see Dakota doing so much better than the other two....
  • 11 0
Shoutout to Theo Englandsen from South Africa, qualifying 24th! Ye boy go and get us a top 20 in the finals! Still think Greg has a chance for the win, although in Eliott Jacksons interview his hair looked like usual helmet hair for once. Make South Africa proud boys!!!!!

  • 1 0
no mention of mediocre Reece Wilson?
  • 14 0
No disrespect for Höll, but Pompom is on another league here
  • 9 0
It’s all about who hits the gaps on the big day
  • 1 1
@snomaster: is that the reason for the whopping 7s difference?
  • 8 3
@FloImSchnee: donr know but ponpon was flying down the track, looked like a man, in between most women,, no disrespect.. There is a section with a small transfer to jump to berm, then transfer and a double that if you do not hit perfect, you bail out on the last two jumps (women), and it costs at least 4 seconds..
  • 11 0
@Lagr1980: Alright, I've seen "pompom" and "ponpon".

I know it's not a huge deal, but it's "Pompon".

Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Erm, live timing isn't looking positive for Troy. Hoping it's just a mechanical, but he's not posted a split time post the second one.

Ed Spratt you are not right. Loris was not green in all the split. Split 4 the fastest guy was ANGEL SUAREZ. Angel was close to the end more than half second green. I think he is the guy for tomorrow. Go Angel!!!!!

@Rainozeros: There is only one road gap, the big one going straight into the left-hand berm in sector 1, which is also where Marine took herself out crashing hard yesterday. I'm not saying that she did go around it but I suspect she may have done to lose 4 seconds in that sector.

She also went around the jump at the end of the wood coming into the final section. Intel via Remi’s insta story.

@drew902: Pompon could actually have been the only elite woman to do the gap. Personally, I think it should be removed.
