Live Updates

Pro Stage Preview

Thriller: 6.09km / 1088m descent / 4m climb - Stage 1 / Pro Stage

7:18 am PDT The first group of Elite Women are now taking on the Pro Stage.

7:32 am PDT While we wait for the top-ranked Elite Women to hit today's stage the current top five riders are:

1st. Ines Thoma: 16:25.550
2nd. Barbora Prudkova: 16:26.540
3rd. Nadine Ellecosta: 16:44.570
4th. Julie Duvert: 17:09.050
5th. Camille Rast: 17:11.430

8:38 am PDT Currently the lower-ranked Elite Men are on course with Guillaume Larbeyou leading with Sam Hill just over four seconds back. We should start to see the top Elite Women complete their runs soon.

8:45 am PDT Becky Cook flies into the lead by a massive 9.640 seconds.

8:47 am PDT Raphaela Richter can't match the speed of Becky Cook and goes into second place. Raphaela is still slightly over nine seconds back, this could be an amazing run from Becky.

8:48 am PDT It is now Melanie Pugin who goes fastest and does so by almost eight seconds! Melanie seemed off the pace at the first round so it will be interesting to see how she does this weekend.

8:49 am PDT Wow Morgane Charre has gone into the lead by 33 seconds!

8:52 am PDT Isabeau Courdurier manages to find a further 9.960 seconds on Morgane Charre to go fastest so far.

8:53 am PDT Bex Baraona crosses the line on the Pro Stage over 47 seconds back but this is still good enough for fourth at the moment.

8:54 am PDT Round one winner Ella Conolly is 17 seconds back meaning Isabeau Courdurier wins the Pro Stage.

8:57 am PDT The top-ranked Elite Men are now on the Pro Stage, the current fastest times are:

1st. Guillaume Larbeyou: 13:36.670
2nd. Sam Hill: 13:40.990
3rd. Vid Persak: 13:46.750
4th. Patrick Luthi: 13:47.900
5th. Evan Wall: 13:50.220

9:01 am PDT Matt Walker is the first rider to set a new fastest time going over 11 seconds up on Guillaume Larbeyou.

9:02 am PDT Charlie Murray pushes Sam Hill out of the top three and goes 13.950 seconds behind Matt Walker.

9:04 am PDT Although he is still recovering from an injury Jack Moir manages to take over 13 seconds off Matt Walker and goes fastest so far.

9:07 am PDT A great run from Jack Menzies puts him eight seconds behind Jack Moir in 2nd.

9:10 am PDT The top three are now separated by 10 seconds with Slawomir Lukasik crossing the line in third place.

9:16 am PDT Ed Masters just pulls ahead of Slawomir Lukasik by a tiny margin to go third.

9:20 am PDT Martin Maes has had a bad result on the Pro Stage going around 50 seconds back from Jack Moir. A gap this big is going to be hard to pull back over tomorrow's stages.

9:21 am PDT Jesse Melamed looking strong today with an 8.680 gap to Jack Moir at the front of the race. The top three riders are now separated by a massive 17 seconds.

9:22 am PDT Richie Rude crosses the line 10.780 seconds back and goes into third place. Jesse Melamed wins the Pro Stage!

Melamed is on a good one, 8s in front. So good to see Moir back at the sharp end as well!
  • 3 0
Hopefully Jesse can make something out of that, and glad to see Moir back too!

I know it goes against the circle jerk but the live timing looks and works fine this time around, haven't had any issues and it seems to update consistently and regularly. Easy to swap between just finished, live updates, and overall leaderboard on my phone.

These guys whine about the current coverage and they are already wining about the future coverage that hasn't even happened yet. People need to wake up to the fact that the EWS field is not all its cracked up to be and it's not going to get elite level sports money and coverage, though I do think WB/Discovery will make it better. The fact that locals and rando's can just enter and do well is proof. Nobody is just walking into a DH or XC WC race.
  • 15 1
@warmerdamj: I mean it's not like these dudes are getting up off their couch and setting down podium times. If you're referring to Innes Graham last race, he was referred to as a "local" yes, but he's also raced DH World Cups for a couple years as a junior. Pretty sure people aren't walking in off the street and racing EWS competitively.
  • 7 0
@warmerdamj: I’m pretty sure you have to qualify to race an EWS you can’t just enter it. Probably worth doing your homework before commenting.

@enduroNZ: sorry that was poorly worded, I'm aware how it works. But what I said still holds true. EWS is barely professional sports. Pro sports have tiers and development, and yes I know EWS has U21. The main division needs to develop further though, nobody should be able to just get a podium on the EWS because they have local track knowledge and were able to qualify. Think about it, even if somebody got into an XC world cup, they aren't going to do well. It would be laughable because xc is so developed that it's top tier racers have been preparing for it their entire life. The bottom 10% of XC or DH guys are way better at their trade compared to the general public then the bottom 10% of EWS racers. EWS has not had time to developed their U21 like that. In 10 years the top EWS racers are going to make Rude look like a slouch, they'll be so much more dialed and purpose built. This isn't meant to sound negative about the EWS either, it's rad. But people forget how it's completely in its infancy it is and have too high of expectations.

Look at something like the NHL, all the old greats were great. But they would get lit up by a fourth liner today because hockey has generations of development behind it now.

But all that aside, my main point is that people need to temper their expectations of EWS coverage

Watch this and give me an expert analysis of where, and how this stage could be ridden much faster.

@j0lsrud: You actually think people won't always find a way to go faster on everything? You think that a sport genre less than 20 years old has already hit its peak speed? And this video is the be all, end all proof.

The fastest athletes of any sport are likely not even born yet. I don't need to watch your video because I couldn't tell you shit about going faster. But I can guarantee you that somebody will go faster on every single aspect of EWS, XC and DH then anybody has gone now. Same goes for pretty much every other sport out there. Somebody will always be better.
  • 2 0
 @j0lsrud:
I was mesmerised watching this. 13 mins on the limit, riding DH speeds through challenging and varying terrain, stacks of pedalling, breathing out your eyeballs.
‘Barely professional’… you are taking the piss mate.
  • 2 0
@warmerdamj: I was giving your line of reasoning a chance until I thought about a couple of names that swap disciplines: Martin Maes and Eddie Masters for example.
A DH guy that regularly races EWS, he is up there but is clearly not on another level compared to the other EWS tops guys. Maes: a top EWS guy that from time to time does some WC DH races and smashes it. It goes to show the level all these athletes are at.

flag warmerdamj FL (Jun 18, 2022 at 16:20) (Below Threshold)
@Aaronmc86: actually I'm not talking the piss. It's just common sense. If you think the EWS has hit its peak speed then what's the point in watching anymore? You can just watch that video over and over because it's clearly the fastest riding that will ever be. Sports always get faster and athletes always get better. Find me one sport where people aren't pushing limits and getting better. Do you like watching athletes digress or just stay at the same level? Your talking the piss brother. The next guy will have a third eyeball to breathe out of that you never saw coming.
  • 2 4
@metareal: I don't quite follow you, I'm talking about the EWS field as a whole is much weaker then the XC or DH field as a whole and hence nobody should expect top level coverage. I agree there's some fast guys, but I think the EWS field gets much weaker much faster then the other two. And that's it's shortcoming at this point in its life. That's all I'm saying.
  • 1 0
@warmerdamj: after watching tea and biscuits 2 I think there is talent out there doesn’t race and the ones in the video that do show that the top end might be young in terms of sport history but it’s still a very sharp end at the top. IMO.
  • 5 3
@warmerdamj: "the EWS field gets much weaker much faster." I have nothing to add other than to say that as a whole your prose is much weaker than that of the average PB commenter. Luckily better writers are on the horizon. Same goes for pretty much every other language out there. Somebody will always be better.
  • 1 3
@warmerdamj: I think XC only has a competitive field right to the bottom 10% because of its crossover from road cycling. Someone who isn't quite up to top 100 in road cycling can transition to XC and do fairly well within a few years. That's why the European countries do quite well in that discipline because there's well developed feeder circuits. DH still isn't as well developed as XC and only marginally better than Enduro.
Having said all this, I don't think we should temper expectations for EWS coverage. With the right coverage this can quickly become bigger than XC or DH as it combines the fitness aspect of XC with the excitement of DH. Of course it's harder to cover than short track or DH, but with modern drone technology it also isn't outrageously out of reach.
  • 1 2
@warmerdamj: your argument concerning the field size doesn’t hold up. Think of a marathon run. Thousands of plebs run together with the pros. And it has happened that “locals” have done very well in marathons.
The problem is more the coverage. It is much easier to broadcast DH. Think of F1 motor racing versus rally driving.
And aren’t there qualification races for the EWS? At least the website has a tab for qualifiers.

6 km stage, man that's brutal. Can't imagine trying to focus on lines for that long at full tilt.
  • 6 4
In my experience you're lit up physically and mentally for the first few minutes, then your body goes and you're just holding on but you can still see what's happening and make choices. Then your brain dies, it's at this point where you can sometimes actually start going faster because you're too tired to make slow decisions. When this happens you start to be thankful for how capable bikes are these days, because the long slack long travel sled you're on is saving your bacon every time you hit something badly

The 4.8km stage at the Canadian Enduro @ Harper mountain last month was long enough. Another 25% longer would’ve left most feeling like a wet noodle at the stage end.
  • 1 0
@GumptionZA: Did you watch Jesse Melameds training run? I guess after that short uphill sprint diving into the roots needs a proper working brain. This is brutal! No time to get the heart rate down a bit to get the blood flow back with fresh o2 into the brain.

Did a Big Mountain Enduro last year and Stage 2 was 8km in freezing rain. They ended shutting down the course that day because the inclement weather. It took me about 21mins, hands nearly frozen and removing my googles because i had no tear offs, it felt like the stage wouldn't end and i kept thinking i took a wrong turn but i kept seeing tape from time to time. Fastest Pro did it in like 17mins in good weather.

I did an 18 minute stage once and it was hard, but I knew how long it was going to be going into it. Still tough to hold on at the end, but you pace yourself and keep in mind that making mistakes is going to cost you more than you’d gain by trying to push the same pace you would on a 5 minute stage.

Back in the olden days like 2011 the Oreygone Super D series raced the Alpine trail in Oakridge. The pros were like 45 minutes, I packed a bag and it was a couple days..lol..really about an hour. It was so good but I was so smoked. Two runs the day before for practice. Also up hill both ways.

@no-good-ideas: Remember having to do a 14 min stage on harper, was pretty intense

Megavalanche @28km or Mountain of Hell @20km say hello. I was at Les Deux Alpes a few weeks before the race in 2018 and rode all except the top glacier section [still a ski slope, no bikes allowed]. When you have time to stop for a baguette in the village like I did it's a nice ride, but full gas all the way would be brutal.

@chris-b-mtb is this what y’all have in mind for WC DH?
  • 2 1
@owl-X: it's their so called "next level"
  • 9 4
Hardly fair to compare with DH - for starters, EWS stages are in remote areas, often not within mobile reception. There are over a dozen stages to organise, and that's just talking about the timing. EWS events are often run at venues not visited regularly. All of this means there is a lot to learn by local race organisers and EWS alike. If it was perfect, it wouldn't be pushing boundaries.
  • 4 0
@jockthestore: I think it’s fair to ask the guys who’ll be running the show, the bike racing show, if the bike racing show they’re currently running will look like the bike racing show they’ve just announced that they’ve paid to run. Tried to include that thing in an “ask him anything” he volunteered to host, in fact, on this very bike-related website.
Yeah, I think that’s fair.
Agree this is not perfect.

Chill bro's, they are working to improve timing every single event.

"click pro stage - Live Timing & Race Feed"

That's it for me...just grabbed my bike and went for a ride! Cheers!

I think that the EWS was just a mean to get to WC DH. It looks like they don't care too much about EWS cause the money is in DH. So DH will be much better, but enduro will not improve.
  • 1 0
@lkubica: unfortunately I think you are right.
But i still believe that Enduro have a lot of margin to improve as a televised sport.
  • 1 0
@lkubica: the money goes in to DH, not sure it comes out lol
  • 2 0
@Caveirex: The only way for it to happen would be to broadcast the raw live feeds from the riders' action cams. It would be crazy expensive to rig a proper camera network through all the stages.
  • 1 1
@jockthestore: Yes, but today was a one stage affair - just the Pro Stage, so not too much harder than a DH race. If they're having trouble today, imagine tomorrow.
