Pinkbike Poll: Which of These 60 Notable Mountain Bikers Do You Recognize?

Nov 13, 2020
by Mike Kazimer
Mountain biking is entering its fourth decade of existence, and the list of notable personalities continues to grow. From extroverted, always-entertaining racers to quiet tinkerers who let their metal and composite creations do the talking, it'd be easy to come up with the names of hundreds of people who have influenced the sport in some way.

Mountain bike history isn't a class in most schools, which means that for many of us the names that we recognize are typically tied to how long we've been riding. If you started biking in the last decade, names like Brandon Semenuk, Aaron Gwin, or Rachel Atherton will be very familiar, while mentions of John Tomac, Josh Bender, or Missy Giove might leave you scratching your head.

What follows is a list of 60 notable mountain bikers, a mix of racers, freeriders, and designers. Select the ones you recognize without any help from Google, and then be sure to spend a little time researching the ones you didn't know – there are all sorts of fascinating stories behind every single name on this list.

Keep in mind that this isn't meant to be a definitive "Best Mountain Bikers of All Time List" - there are dozens of additional names that would end up on a list like that. Instead, it's a selection of names from different time periods that will hopefully jog some memories, and inspire readers to do a little digging to learn more about the names that aren't familiar.

Which of these names of notable mountain bikers do you recognize?

Ok so next we need the same list with what each of those amazing people contributed and what they are most known for in the MTB world. Oh and what they are doing now.
  • 112 0
Not a bad idea - there are plans in the works to get a 'Where Are They Now?" series up and running to try and track down some of the characters that have fallen off the map.
  • 61 39
 Missy Giove - Running Drugs
  • 31 0
Having Frank Wadelton so low being recognized is a disservice to the bike community, that might be by his own accord, but there is a ton of design and build that he did at the start of the growth of this sport.
  • 4 5
@Matturalistic: wrong, she smuggle she had the potential cause she is fast
  • 3 3
@marrihuan: Not that fast mate, she was caught with a decent amount of Mary Jane in a dinghy I think it was.
  • 63 0
 @tanner07: Facts.

That said, how many people only know him as Frank the Welder?
  • 10 0
@tanner07: doesn’t help that he is known as Frank the welder.
  • 6 0
@McArdle: I think it was in a box truck...
  • 3 0
Cheers Mike I look forward to that @mikekazimer:
  • 4 0
 @Matturalistic: She's my favourite.
  • 11 0
@tanner07: Crap I never even made the connections, he's Frank the Welder to me.
  • 17 0
Better than being John Rader. I had to look him up; he invented the threadless headset at 20 years old. Huge contribution to mountain biking. I feel bad now for not knowing that one.
  • 5 0
@mikekazimer: That's a great idea Kaz! It would be amazing to see if some of the old timers are still riding.
  • 2 0
@DirtCrab: Yep! FTW. On every Yeti team bike back in the '80s-'90s.
  • 3 1
@Matturalistic: that’s so immature allistic of you .
  • 12 0
Ned Overend: STILL kicking ass 40 years later.
  • 5 0
@Matturalistic: There was a captivating movie about her after-bike life on the web. It's a must watch for all of us who remember the lady with the piranha collar. Smile
  • 1 0
 @DirtCrab: Shit, I should have known... :/
  • 3 0
@cool3: I think it was part of Red Cards, by Vice Sports. Really good series, actually.
  • 4 1
@mikekazimer: often wonder how julie furtado is doing? Such a dominating force in her day. Is she able to ride? Maybe an emtb?

@mikekazimer: I think a reunion ride with some would be an epic add on to this.
  • 1 0
 @mikekazimer: surely entering fifth decade?

@mikekazimer: The Super T episode was incredible.
  • 2 0
@Matturalistic: that's real but still remember her for death grip riding!

@Matturalistic: last time I saw Missy, she was coaching some teenage girls at a Snowshoe downhill race.
  • 1 0
@marrihuan: not fast enough tho lol
  • 1 0
@cool3: that video left me wondering about the millions she had in sponsorships.
  • 1 0
Particularly for John Rader who it would appear nobody knows...
  • 5 0
@DirtCrab: If they'd put Frank the Welder, that would have been a yes from me, as it was I didn't know his surname.
  • 2 0
@Matturalistic: She did her time. what a life.
  • 2 0
@tetonlarry: He used to come into our shop in Dallas when I worked there. I also had the opportunity to meet John Burke, Ben Serotta and Lance Armstrong's biological dad while working there, as well as most of Team EDS.
  • 1 0
@chezotron: How is he not the #1 recognized name???? (Overend)
  • 1 0
@tetonlarry: I've been in this sport way too long, lol. But I didn't know about John either. And, threadless headsets are so much better than the old quill style they replaced. Can you imagine a modern bike with a quill style headset?!
  • 1 0
 @chezotron:

I can confirm that’s a fact.
  • 1 0
@mikekazimer: Get the ol drop in boys! Dylan tremblay, tyler klassen, romo...theyve all kinda fallen off the face of the earth
  • 1 0
@Ironchefjon: Romo, as DJ ROMO, DJed my friend's wedding. Apparently he was great.
  • 1 0
@tanner07: I had the pleasure of meeting him at Plattekill at one point. Great guy and quite the legend for what he gave the biking community.
  • 1 0
@tanner07: Dang I didn't know his actual name just knew him as Frank the Welder.
  • 1 1
@Matturalistic: When she was winning races you were a kid .. Have some respect!
  • 1 0
@blacktea: I'm no stranger to having a single incident define your legacy, despite it not defining all of who you are. I am also no stranger to having people perpetuate it online for years. Google "Sadokist" and you will easily see what I am talking about.

Nevertheless, I also understand that not all is in vain, and sometimes it's best to see the humour in it, even if most would assume there is none. I have loads of respect for Missy, and I actually think she's been doing well to give back to the biking community and become a role model. Redemption often makes us stronger, in the end.
  • 1 0
@Matturalistic: It is precisely from the perspective of what you write my comment. Many point the finger at Missy's drug problems and this obscures what she did well (and maybe she's doing). Maybe your comment was ironic, but I don't think it was that funny for Missy.
  • 1 0
@mikekazimer: Good. This is important. Roots, too. In my 40 years of traditional Taoist combat kungfu training, one's lineage was considered more important than ones self.
  • 1 0
@PAmtbiker: YES. Interstate Transport. Something like that.
  • 1 0
@blacktea: I think you would be surprised what people who grow thick skin can laugh off. Often times it is the best defense against it.
  • 56 3
How are Tinker Juarez and Juliana Furtado not on this list?
They were a big part of the early 90s and the Norba racing.
Myles Rockwell raced with Missy but is not included.
  • 22 1
It's not meant to be a comprehensive list of every important mountain biker (Tinker, Juli, and Myles would certainly be on that one); instead, there's a mix of riders from various time periods.
  • 4 0
@mikekazimer: I want to see percentages PB readers knew, and see a bell curve. I was at 90% (all but 7).
  • 5 0
@mikekazimer: fair point. However us old farts remember the 90’s with rose tinted glasses and a few racers we looked up to. (Before the free ride fun ride movement)
I think Joe Murray was important to the early success of Kona.
  • 4 1
@mikekazimer: You definitely should have had Joe Sloop, Cindy Devine, Dangerous Dan Cowan and at least one golden era east coast trials rider like Jeff Lenosky. I got all but 6. As Arlo Gurthrie said, "I could be here all night. I'm not proud, or tired".
  • 3 0
Did an NUE race 3 weeks ago, Tinker went right by me...he is the Energizer Bunny of MTB racing.
  • 3 0
 @The-Foiling-Optimist: Nice Alice's Restaurant reference
  • 1 0
@mikekazimer: What mountain biker hasn't seen Tinker at an event in the past few years? I think I've raced him six times ("raced" - he still kicks ass) in the past four years.
  • 2 0
and JMC....probably the most important man in early British downhill
  • 1 0
I love when Tinker shows up and beats the pant off of younger riders. lol.
  • 30 0
John Stamstad should be a household name. The fkn guy was quoted saying he prefers donuts for training because they have a good calorie to dollar ratio. Pragmatic and tough as nails.
  • 10 0
I totally agree. He's been my hero ever since I first heard about him in the mid '90s.
  • 10 0
@mikekazimer: Why isn't Mike Kazimer on the list? Smile
  • 2 0
Don't forger he also said he didn't shave because razors are expensive.
  • 6 0
I raced against him twice at the 24 Hours of Canaan race in WV back in the mid nineties... He was a fun guy... I was on a 4-man team and he was riding solo, and he almost did as many laps as we did... incredible guy!... I remember riding along side him at one point and I asked him how he was and all he said was "my ass is f#cked"... Legend!
  • 5 0
Is he still alive? I remember an interview where he was talking about eating whole cans of pressurized whip cream because it had the best dollar to calorie ratio (and donuts, as Eatsdirt said above). At the time I remember thinking nobody who eats like that could be long for this world. Smile Smile
  • 1 0
@kram: I guess bad food is only unhealthy if you don't immediately burn it off!
  • 29 0
Wow, I'm old. I know pretty much all of them well and have partied and/or ridden with most of them! ha ha Love the mtn bike world!
  • 1 0
Brett Tippie? i think to have already heard this name Smile
  • 26 1
 SUPER T!
  • 2 1
I was chatting about Super T with a friend just this week.
  • 18 1
I was glad to see super T, Steve romaniuk and dylan tremblay on the list. Drop in tv crew.
  • 19 1
I feel bad that John Rader wasn't on my radar
  • 6 0
I wish I was a-head of you on that one, but alas.
  • 22 5
Interesting no Anne Caroline on this list
  • 4 2
H-ball and Miles Rockwell as well.
  • 9 0
Like I mentioned in another comment, it's not meant to be a comprehensive list of every important mountain biker - Anne-Caroline is a certified legend and would be on any list like that. Instead, there's a mix of riders from various time periods to see which ones readers recognize.
  • 6 2
@mikekazimer: But still, no Greg Herbold?
  • 1 0
@mikekazimer: Seems like you need to post that in the article as you'd otherwise end up responding to the same question an million times here.

That said, how could you not have included ... ?!
  • 2 0
 Tara Llanes too
  • 10 0
According to the results as they are now, Danny Macaskill is the most recognized name in mountain biking. Which, I completely support, he's amazing. But its still interesting to see.
  • 3 0
DM is just straight up entertaining ! Love watching his vids
  • 3 0
@ATV25: when even people like my Aunt are forwarding Danny's you tube clips to her friends and family, you know he is famous for the general population too
  • 10 0
I hear his lawyers are suing to stop the vote while he's ahead
  • 2 0
But not that much more than Sam Hill.
  • 7 0
The next question is how many of these people have you met? My number is 4.
  • 1 0
Nine. But a few were just a brief hello. I try not to get starstruck and when crossing paths with folks.
  • 1 0
I’ve spent a couple evenings with Gary Fisher, dudes a freakin riot to hang with!
  • 1 0
I’m at 3. Batty, Fisher and Bontrager.
Fish is certainly a wild man. I may have photographic proof.
  • 2 0
Nine that I remember. Ridden with at least four of them. Shared a houseboat at DirtFest with one.
  • 1 0
Only Wade Simmons but I've bumped into him multiple times biking and around town.
  • 2 0
Of the things I'll regret, will be the rider I didn't take the time to chat with. Jordi took a table next to me on the deck at Whis, didn't want to intrude on his lunch so I didn't say anything. RIP
  • 2 0
 None *pouts*
  • 5 0
I'm just at 1, but it's Ned Overend, so I'm good. He's also one of the nicest dudes I've ever met.
  • 1 0
Just one, Chris King. Worked on his building in not cal before he moved north
  • 2 0
 @bicycle019: I remember that houseboat.
  • 3 0
Not sure if this counts but I was in line right behind Paola Pezzo at some grocery store at Mt Snow, VT mid 90's (1995?). If anyone remembers her from that timeframe you'll know why I could hardly breathe. I remember she had a crazy amount of gallon containers of waters.

Also saw Ned Overland and Tomac battling at Mt Snow that same era. Actually I would hear Tomac first with the drum sound of that Tioga rear wheel he ran then.
  • 1 0
 13 for meSmile
  • 3 0
He's not on the list, but I've been lucky enough to have breakfast with Aaron Chase... We were in Nuremberg for the District ride in 2011, having breakfast at a small cafe on the main square. He came in looking a little confused and at some point asked us what we could recommend for him to eat. Joined us for half an hour or so - super nice guy, told a few stories. Totally starstruck.
  • 1 0
 My number is 8.
  • 2 0
7 including waiting tables on Ned Overend. He also swung by the house once to go for a ride with a buddy of mine. Tomac would cruise by the house and say hi once in a while too. Herbold lived in my dorm as a freshman (but he's not on the list). Spent quite a bit of time chatting with Gwin's mom at Fontana around the time A-A-ron switched from Yeti to Trek. I know "Cool story, bro!"
  • 4 0
How is it possible that only so few people recognize the name Horst Leitner? Chances are extremely high, that you either currently own or have owned at some point a bike with the suspension geometry that he invented. For those who don't know: He invented the classic four bar system.
  • 8 1
I hung out with Dylan Tremblay once
  • 1 1
The dude was jibbing a decade before it was cool. Bet he's stoked as to see what the likes of Josh Lewis and Phil Atwill get upto now.
  • 4 0
 He slept on my couch.
  • 1 0
@TobiasHandcock: well ahead of his time for sure
  • 1 0
Me too. I showed him a brick bank to ride here in Vancouver and sprained my thumb showing off to him.
  • 6 0
Stoked as to see a few Drop In names on there. Those lads got me into this sport.
  • 1 0
Same here. I was watching them on tv about 16 years ago
  • 4 0
Hans Rey & Mert Lawwill should be getting more shout outs. I mean Hans Rey is like the Rodney Mullen of mountain biking. And Mert Lawwill was amongst those who paved the way for modern suspension designs.
  • 6 8
 Who is Rodney Mullen?
  • 3 0
@kingbike2: Rodney Mullen.....does magical things on a skateboard, just like how Hans Rey does magical, wonderful things on his bike.....simply amazing.
  • 2 0
@Ben-76:piqued my interest , will look for videos.
  • 2 0
 @kingbike2:

Watch the documentary ‘bones brigade’. Misty eyed for Rodney Mullen ever since, and I don’t skate.
  • 2 0
@kingbike2: Only the most gifted individual to ever step foot on a board. He blew minds through the 80's and 90's and still does. Check out 'From The Ground Up' and 'Virtual Reality' on Youtube.
  • 8 0
 Shaums March?
  • 4 0
Interesting the generational times. Sam Hill has more clicks than Peatey. Shows how the sport became more mainstream as Hill began the takeover.
  • 6 0
It's Sam Hill, what are you saying?
  • 5 0
Some boys in my era had Bay Watch posters on their wall. I had Paola Pezzo.
  • 2 0
MARLA STREB was a goddess and probably still is. Happy to have track-walked and raced with her at a DH series so small it was called Bonsai DH. On Mt Hamilton east of San Jo. She was a Pro and I was a No and she didn't give a fvck. Hope you are doing well, Marla!
  • 2 0
oh come on man . let's go back a little father when i lived in marin county and rode my schwinn off road or on the fire trails there in the 1950s and sixties . Who remembers - Joe Breeze , richard cunningham , gary fisher and a bunch of other guys that invented mt. biking . I'll bet not too many on this forum kow anything about the true origins of the sport .
  • 1 0
You might be right about that, but this is a front page article, and as such, everyone knows everything, they're just messing with ya.
Apart from @kingbike2 who apparently doesn't know who Rodney Mullen is, but he's already on it!
  • 3 1
Definitely can tell the majority age of those who “voted”.
A few very key names left off the list.....
Shandro
Cowan
Sorge
Rennie
Tippie
Spangler
And most importantly imho.....Stevie Smith
  • 1 0
 Preach brother!
  • 3 0
I should put a caveat in, that it’s not posted for at least a week, so we can do our homework. Then we can see how well we all did.
  • 5 0
More people than I expected know Josh Bender and Tyler Klassen.
  • 3 0
Probably an age thing. Late 30's (who am I kidding, almost 40) Josh Bender hurling himself off vert cliffs on 3 foot travel Karpiel bikes in MTB vids growing up was staple for me, kids these days not so much.
  • 1 0
One of the first mtb videos that I discovered when I started to use YT
  • 8 0
I'm 23 and am fully aware of Josh Bender.
  • 2 0
@danielstutt: That's great! Makes me feel less old, cheers mate Big Grin
  • 1 0
@veero: Me too, I am nineteen.
  • 1 0
I talked Tyler Klassen once in whistler
  • 1 0
@veero: this defined mtb for me, every other shop had it on a tv playing on repeat
  • 2 0
Anyone not knowing who Bender is should be ashamed and google him immediately! ;p
  • 3 0
There was a good piece on here about Tyler klassen a while ago right?
Would be interested to hear what Romaniuk is up to these days
  • 1 0
I know almost all the names. I could probably recognize most of them from their "era" but if I ran into them on the street today I cannot say I would be able to. Some are easy, like Tomac, easy to recognize back then as now even if he wasn't still seen at MX races with Eli (looks the same)
I have had a beer with at least 3 people on that list. Goal to increase that???
  • 5 0
Shaun Palmer needs a Hollywood movie made about his life!
  • 6 0
 NORBS GOT ROBBED!!!!!
  • 4 0
The title picture was Keith Bontrager drinking from the bottle in his garage but no mention of Him.
  • 1 0
 that's the man
  • 1 0
I wondered how far down it would be before someone mentioned that photo - was that in an ad or in Bike many years ago
  • 1 0
@acrowe: I'm guessing it was from a magazine photo originally where a story was written about Mr Bontrager.
  • 2 0
Thanks @mikekazimer and pb crew for keeping the history alive.
You can't call yourself a mountain biker if you don't know who John Tomac is - or was in terms of his active career.
  • 2 0
Paola Pezzo...first mountain biking Olympic gold medalist. Susan DeMattei, first (of two) American women to medal in mountain biking. Jesus Christ!...know your friggin' roots mountain bikers!
  • 3 0
what do you mean by recognize?
you should have posted pictures and we should have had to guess the name
  • 1 0
Yeah let’s have this next week please
  • 4 0
 (Sarcasm) Where’s Tony Ellsworth?
  • 1 0
He's on a lot of other lists, I bet.
  • 1 0
 @noisette: haha yes he is
  • 2 0
I met Hans when I was a teen and we took him to the shore and blew his mind... lol

My Tremblay is a local legend around these parts I hear Wink
  • 5 0
 61. Randy
  • 3 0
I think it's funny horst leitner is kind of low considering how many bikes are using his suspension design
  • 2 0
Exactly. Probably at least 50% of the people here are riding a Horst Link bike
  • 2 0
Richey Schley the OG Fro Rider. Remember when Cannondale was the bad boy and they had to change the name of their advertisements.
  • 3 0
I think you should have tossed in at least one decoy for the know it alls. :-)
  • 6 1
 Greg Minnaar?!?
  • 1 1
Miguel Martinez, Travis Brown, Alison Dunlop, Alison Sydor, Cadel Evans, Bart Brentjens, Roland Green, Ryan Leech, the list could be endless. However, missing Travis Brown off this list is a crime. He invented the Mullet Bike FFS!
  • 4 0
Cannondale trials rider Libor Karas. Anyone?
  • 1 0
the only reason i knew some of these 90s people is cause i did a research paper sophomore year on missy giove and they came up. wich makes sense as iv eonly been mountain biking for like 3 years
  • 2 0
What?! I'm not on there?! Oooohhh wait. It's not supposed to be a comprehensive list. Gotcha!
  • 3 0
I guess Brett Tippie or Kelly McGarry aren't notable enough for this crowd
  • 1 0
Tom Hillard? He was the Specialized support guy in the early racing days. Rode his moto trials bike at almost every race! Thanks for all the tubes and Ground Control tires!
  • 3 0
Thought Palmer would be more than that!
  • 1 0
Dang, Bobby Root! His high speed manuals were inspirational. Richie Schley was probably the most influential rider of mine when I was growing into the sport.
  • 2 0
Weirdly as of right now there are 299 people who've taken the poll who don't know who Brandon Semenuk is...
  • 2 0
Crazy how.low.ben Boyko and Super T are known. Two absolute Legends of the sport. I mean Super had a.fork named after him.
  • 1 0
What the hell kind of mountain biker are you if you never heard of Bender.......and the jaw drop. You should have your card revoked.
  • 1 0
Got to know 3 on that list pretty well... All as legendary as you might think!!!
  • 2 0
I was very pleased Bobby Root made it to this list!!
  • 1 0
Who could forget Bobby Root's 70mph manual. And the dead bee.
  • 4 0

  • 1 0
I want to see percentages PB readers knew, and see a bell curve. I was at 90% (all but 7).
  • 2 0
Does this mean Sam Hill is the world's most recognized MTB legend?
  • 1 0
I'd read every article in a historical series about the 10 or 15 least known names on this list.
  • 1 0
Charlie Kelly ought to be on this list. Also Joe Murray--didn't see him. Don't forget Sammy Hagar!
  • 1 0
Hidden in plain sight... this poll could have used an ACC reference somewhere.
  • 1 0
Ahhh off season again. What's next? Watch these other 200 videos from the past?
  • 1 0
Dylan Tremblay and the rest of the OG "Drop in" cast are legends. The definition of doing it for the love.
  • 1 0

my mountain bike team organized in 2002 a day of cycling with Paola Pezzo ... good memories!
  • 2 1
No John Kirkaldie, Shaums March, or Vanessa Quin?
  • 1 0
Not a single trail builder is noteworthy I guess.
  • 1 1
Where’s Tinker? Dude is like 60 and still winning races. And his hair is legendary!!
  • 2 1
Surprised Fabian Barel is not in the list
  • 7 0
It's not meant to be a comprehensive list of every important mountain biker (Fabien would certainly be on that one); instead, there's a mix of riders from various time periods.
  • 1 0
 @mikekazimer: fair enough! My bad
  • 1 0
@mikekazimer: Now that would be a good series to do. Catch up with legends gone by and take them riding with current pro riders.
  • 2 0
 I didn't know any
  • 2 0
