Finals Photo Epic: Les Gets DH World Cup 2021

Once again Les Gets over delivered on already high expectations. A venue that has seen some of the most historic races over the past few decades once again came through with all the drama and excitement we've come to expect from this small corner of the French Alps. Just when you thought Les Gets couldn't outdo itself, it raised the bar once again. One of the best tracks we have seen in years, a massive French crowd that we've oh so missed over the past year, and a twist of fate from mother nature just to make things a little spicier all added up to keep everyone on the edge of their seats all afternoon long.

First up would be the Junior race where we would see two first time winners in the likes of Phoebe Gale and Jackson Goldstone. Behind them a mix of fresh and familiar faces rounded out the remaining podium spots, proving once again that the next generation is deep in talent and hungry to leave their mark on the world stage in the years to come.

The Elite Women's race would get the drama started and set the stage for what would be an afternoon of unpredictable highs and lows. With near misses, gutsy race runs, close calls and crashes throughout, it would be Tahnee Seagrave who would reclaim her spot on the top step of the podium. Finding speed and confidence that's been missing recently, Tahnee dug deep to raise her game when it counted and proved to the world she is still very much one of the women to beat this season. Myriam Nicole for the second race in a row crashed in her run and still almost managed to set the fastest time, showing that if she can stay on her bike she may just be in a league of her own later this season. Camille Balanche would keep it consistent for third, while another pre-race favorite, Vali Höll crashed in the final corner while on a fast run.

In came the rain for the Men's race to turn everything on its head a bit. Steady at first it would affect nearly everyone's runs in some way, but the real fun was dished out on the top 10-15 riders who would progressively see things deteriorate as a drizzle became a downpour. Reece Wilson just about had the ride of the day, on a podium pace in the worst conditions, followed by the most epic of crashes moments from the finish. A gutsy run to be proud of for sure, and lucky to walk away uninjured. French favorites Loic Bruni and Loris Vergier still pinned it for the home crowd even in the worst conditions possible and would receive some of the loudest cheers of the day, with Bruni being mobbed in the finish as the last rider down. Truly the people's champion of France. But in the end, it would be another Frenchman, Thibaut Daprela, giving the people what they were after as he would take advantage of a slick but less treacherous track to set what would be the fastest time of the day, and his first Elite World Cup win. Rounding out the top three would be Max Hartenstern and Baptiste Pierron.

While the party in Les Gets will continue long into the night and the early morning, the World Cup takes a month off before picking up again mid-August in Maribor, Slovenia.

And Minaar did one hell of a run settling in 7th position in finals with this conditions

Glad someone mentioned it. I think he was by far the fastest in the conditions he came down in. No disrespect to earlier riders - that’s racing. Just the most under the radar impressive run.

That's years of experience paying off. I reckon he has raced this track more times than anyone else.

@tremeer023: it was a brand new track, never ridden before actually. The previous tracks in Les Gets descended a very different aspect of the mountain. Great to see a clean slate for everyone

Ah yes? Wasn't Brosman's ride far before Daprela's... and before the massive rain?

The men's race was one of those races / sporting events in which final position was significantly affected by position one ran. The track clearly got slower / slushier and I'm sure much more slippery and sketchy. Shame on Redbull TV for not having cams set up in that first 1:30, except for the initial pitch... Both men and ladies were sending hard! Sets up a great points race.

To the photographers who caught these fantastic images, congratulations on an amazing job well done in what were obviously trying conditions. Thank you! To pinkbike, thank you for bringing us this primo content for free. To the guys in the Citroen, that's fcukn' awesome! To you I say Vive Le France! Merci.

Reece Wilson is a f#cking legend. His and Bernard Kerr's runs were outstanding. On the edge the whole way down. Insanity
  • 6 1
I'm going to assume they removed the road gap from the race.
  • 26 0
nope. it's worse than that, they didn't have a single camera setup for the road gap.
  • 17 2
The road gap every rider and fan was talking about all week? The critical feature that could determine the outcome of the race? That road gap? Redbull doesn't know what you're talking about...
My grandma's been dead for more than a decade and she could have picked better camera positions.
  • 7 0
@ddd: particularly as it was absolutely the critical factor for the women's race, its exclusion from camera range was just shocking.
  • 7 8
@ddd: Why was it critical? Most riders were hitting it and there’s no different line choice or time to be lost/gained. Better to focus on the tech parts.
  • 4 0
@ddd: the commentary was so awkward too, ah yes another rider 7 seconds back after split 1.... I wonder where they lost the time. Hmmmmmm, so anyway...

Warner mentions only once I think during the women's final right at the end, I think.
  • 8 0
@dirtyburger: I thought the commentary was great. Much prefer Tracey and Eliot with Rob to be honest.
  • 1 0
 @dirtyburger:
And then instead mention 500 times that the conditions were so slippery. As if the viewers couldn't tell.
  • 2 0
@Aptlynamed: To be fair, I think there's a limited number of different ways to talk about a track that's getting worse and times that are getting slower.

I really enjoyed the commentary - I think it's a really good balance with Hype Man Warner (who is very professional too these days) and a more analytical racer's view alongside.

Fantastic set of photos! Great to see some shots that show exactly how steep it is in those muddy, wet, rooty chutes. Really superhuman effort for all of these people to ride those at the speeds they do.
  • 1 0
Not the race the course deserved. Daprela, full credit it to him, did what he needed to and put down a heater of a run, beating some top guys in the process. But the last 10 or so riders were under different conditions so the race finished a bit flat. In fact, the only thing I wanted from the last few riders, was for them to get down in one piece. That camber to cambered kicker was horrendous! Wilson's run was the wildest of the lot. Minaar still has it, obivously.
  • 2 0
Agree that the race wasn't the same for everyone but don't agree that the race finished flat. You're never sure that a Danny Hart, Reece or Remi Thirion (or Sam Hill in older times) won't put a miracle run in these conditions. And Thibault hadn't the best conditions if you compare everyone...That's racing and that keeps suspense : I love it. Sorry for my english
  • 1 1
Maybe it would be time to think about adapting start time when the weather forecast is like this ?
Rain was announced , why not make the race in the morning so ?
Completely pointless to watch this race at the end of the day , and riders get massive crashes trying hard to save only a few points
  • 4 0
If only that was an easy option it would certainly be ideal. Unfortunately the times are locked in due to TV times with various broadcasters and obviously the live feed on Red Bull. Once that time is established it is locked and loaded. The end result does fall a bit flat, but the other option is no coverage available and the high dollar tv contracts that keep money in the sport fling off.
  • 4 1
That was the best event I’ve seen in so long. Amazing.
