Patrol's New 29er Trail Bike - Interbike 2017

Patrol
Patrol's 29-inch-wheel 591 will be available January 2018 with an anticipated MSRP of $5000 USD. The 140mm travel aluminum chassis is designed to also accept 27.5 Plus wheels.

Patrol is based in Indonesia, where they have gained popularity among top-level riders there. Three years ago, Patrol set up operations in San Diego, California, and have been expanding their dealer-based sales network methodically in the US. There is a lot to like about Patrol's range. The suspension and design elements are well proven, component selection is on the money, and construction finish is beautiful. Frames are built from aluminum (with the exception of their XC racing hardtail) and Patrol fields a World Cup DH team to keep abreast of technology and trends, and admittedly, to remind potential customers that they are legit.

I noticed that a sizable number of dealers were riding Patrol's trail bikes at Outdoor Demo, so I hunted them down at the indoor show to get a rundown on their range, and a peep at the new 591 29er, which is not slated for sale until January 2018.

I was impressed with the bikes, and more-so by their design philosophy. They want their bikes to perform at the top of their categories, but with geometry that has been intentionally scaled back from the single-purpose numbers that all-in racing machines are sporting these days. Patrol says that they value the fun factor as much as they value finish-line performance. Look for a review in the near future.
Patrol
Wheel travel is 140mm and the steering angle is 67.5 degrees. Geometry is on the milder side of enduro.

Patrol

Patrol
Details everywhere.

Patrol
The 672, priced at $2899 USD, was a popular favorite at outdoor demo. The 160mm travel trail bike is based around 27.5-inch wheels.

Patrol
Patrol's 871 downhill racer is as easy on the eyes as it is on the wallet. Shimano Saint drivetrain, Fox suspension, and DT Swiss wheels. $5699 USD.

Patrol
Shimano Saint drivetrain and brakes.

Patrol
Threaded bottom bracket shell.
Patrol
Coil Fox DH X2 Kashima shock.

Patrol
Low stack-height and Kashima stanchions.

Should have called it the Patrol Transition just to score more Google hits
  • 9 3
yooo it really similar to the Transtion bandit
  • 23 1
If Rocky Mountain and Transition had a love child, this bike would be the result.
  • 2 0
 Truuuuu
  • 2 1
@IdoTag159: the 871 DH bike reminds me alot of the Transition Blind.
  • 40 2
 Threaded BB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • 17 1
Hell, yeah. Why won't more manufacturers give us what we want!
  • 13 4
@karatechris: because manufacturers only care about profit not us.
  • 9 4
Um you would hope an aluminum frame has a threaded bb.
  • 16 0
@mungbean: you would, but lots of newer aluminum bikes are going press fit. Frown
  • 12 1
And you'd think steel has even more of a chance of having a threaded bb but kona says noooooo
  • 5 4
@properp: yeah because profits are so bad. I'm with you lets see the bike company go under. lololol excellent theory dude!!
  • 4 3
@SeaJay: I assume you speak of the honzo. Which I have. Which has a threaded bb.
  • 4 1
@MortifiedPenguin: great. But you missed the point entirely. Many bike companies are transitioning to PF BBs which are bad for a number of reasons, but great for manufacturers. 2017 and 2018 honzos do not have a threaded BB.
  • 4 3
@SeaJay: what's so bad about PF BB?
  • 5 0
@SeaJay: actually, the trend seems to be reverting back to threaded BB shells...
  • 1 0
@SeaJay: I didn't miss the point. You said steal would have a better chance of having a threaded bb, but kona didn't do that. I have a 2017 Honzo steel, and it definitely has a threaded bb. And the 2018 is the same (pretty sure, but I have been wrong before). Wasn't trying to be snarky, just reporting what I know.
  • 2 1
 @MortifiedPenguin: That's strange - the Honzo I'm currently working on has a PF92
  • 2 0
while we are at it, let's bring back threaded headsets!
  • 2 2
@kwapik: Then it's not a steel Honzo which is what's being discussed
  • 2 0
 @ka81: they squeak
  • 2 1
@kwapik: aluminum? I promise I'm not trying to insult your metal identification skills here.
  • 1 0
@MortifiedPenguin: had a chat with kona as i was hoping to be wrong. but, model year 2017 and 2018 kona honzo st is PF92 bottom bracket.
  • 1 1
@SeaJay: must have been a mid year change last year then.
  • 1 0
One reason (of many) to love a Nukeproof. Rocking threaded BBs in shells built like tanks!
  • 1 1
@ka81: I have never had any issues with a press-fit Shimano BB.
  • 29 1
I like the look of that DH bike. Simple, clean, and functional.
  • 2 0
 And seasoned.
  • 1 0
 It rides awesome!
  • 2 0
And it looks like you might be able to run a dropper and a water bottle if it had mounts.

ive been racing the dh bike here in Australia and regularly smoking 10k bikes.. if kids would take the ego out and get a great cheap bike. they would have enough change left to take a Patrol 871 on an oversea's riding trip.. the price gap far outweighs the performance gap. I was off a v10 & an Sworks before that. Patrol for life now.

 Transition getting Pa-trolled.

There can only be so many variations of design really. When are companies going to focus on building bikes that are high quality and bringing the costs down? For decades I used to always scoff at people who would tell me "I can get one with an engine for less" now I am starting to think along the same lines. It just seems a little crazy.

Only so many ways you can skin the Horst Link cat. A lot of naked cats walking around.

There is a certain amount of truth to it. Technologies haven't change greatly since 2012, and while we are starting to get longer, lower, slacker with bigger tire clearances (largely due to the interest in Plus/2.6 tires), for the most part, you can swap parts around between a 5 year old bike and a 2018 model (if it doesn't have PF BB or Metric sized shocks). I'm still running a 2012 Stans Flow/DT350 wheelset with boost adapters on my 2017 Commencal. Almost predictably, we're seeing more direct-to-consumer brands become more popular as the bikes at the bike shops don't seem to be getting any cheaper. I see a lot of people buying carbon frames and parts, not because they need new bikes, but because they want lighter or more versatile bikes. "Catalog Bikes" aren't quite the dirty word they once were, because while yes, those bikes may look exactly like some other brands, they are built in the same factories, and many consumers are far less worried about the name on their frame than they are keeping a few extra grand in their pocket. As much as I'd like to add another bike to my stable, the lack of versatility in current options as well as the lack of value keeps money in my pocket.

I love that "easy on wallet" is somehow $5600...

There are a lot of used KTM's out there looking for a home for a fraction of the cost, with a hell of a lot more technology and manufacturing involved. (And I know this is the same ol' song-n-dance, but people like RC/Pinkbike are living in some sort of fantasy world where we all have that kind of "spare" money laying around).
  • 1 1
I took it as he meant it as the bike is NOT easy on the eyes so the price tag isn't as well.....maybe I'm wrong haha

Patrol from Indonesia, Polygon from Malaysia, it's about time we get good Asian brands. At the end “all“ carbon frames are made in either Taiwan, China or Vietnam. What the other US American, Canadian or European brands have is good marketing.
  • 26 0
 And flannel.
  • 6 0
Just for your information.. Polygon manufactured in indonesia..
  • 4 0
Have you heard about Giant or Merida, those are Asian brands... and also there is more and more of new manufacturers coming from Cambodia, Indonesia...
  • 3 0
@rindradrenaline: sorry Indonesia also and yes Giant and Merida, big ones. I was saying, with all the production and development in Asia, is about time we see more brands coming from Asia.
  • 1 0
Also Fuji, the brand that actually designs and manufactures most of the aluminum frames in Asia...
  • 2 0
 @bishopsmike: Flannel is bond
  • 1 0
In Malaysia, we have Proton T-Bolt. One of the sickest bike adopted the M1 design.
  • 3 0
@ratedgg13: Kinesis produces most of the "name brand" frames - Kona, Felt, Diamondback, GT, Commencal, Jamis, Kross, Haro, Sunn and alot of others. I also understand they make some of the Santa Cruz and Trek frames.
  • 1 0
@kwapik: VIP makes carbon frames for some of the big names too. If you go to the YT page, they mention a Taiwanese company, Pyro Bikes. Genio makes frames for Pivot, Yeti, Propain and many others....

 Cantik!

Posted prematurely. Well thought out 29er and especially like the spec of the Magura Trail brakes - performance at a decent pricepoint.
  • 2 0
 haha....yess..Cantik !!
  • 3 0
@leelau: let me guess, that's the first time it ever happened to you... Wink
  • 1 0
@dwojo: ha. Left that one wide open!
  • 1 0
 TerimaKasih
  • 6 1
Good shit. Cheap shit. Mix em together and get... Something good and cheap!
  • 3 1
Quick bit of looking around on their website ... At under 5’9" tall, based on those reach numbers I'd be somewhere between cramped and comfortable on the largest size they make (large). Has the geometry been "scaled back" or simply left in the past?
  • 8 3
 Its just asian sized
  • 3 1
 @mollow: careful
  • 2 0
 @BenPea:

Cultural reference aside - IME the dimensions for bikes coming out of that region seem to run a bit short relative to how their EU/NA cousins are sized...
  • 2 0
@Hyakian: fair enough. The funny thing is, many (most?) of us have never heard of these brands and yet their markets are as big as the western world's, so they don't need us to have heard of them. And they make bikes my f*cking size! I was born on the wrong continent.
  • 2 1
@mollow: so Asian 29ers are actually 27ers. Big Grin
  • 2 0
@BenPea: Agree, Polygon is as ubiquitous in Indoniesia, Malaysia and Singapore as Trek is in the states. I have to give the Polygon guys props for being willing to try stretch and try new things (Naild).
  • 5 0
Good job fox, now u have bike companies color matching entire bike frames so ur ugly shock doesn't stick out so fugly
  • 5 0
Gorgeous. I am sure it rides like a dream.
  • 3 0
No one going to comment on the insert that comes only in 26 inch?
  • 4 0
Wow, I was pinkbiking so hard I forgot what article I was reading...
  • 1 0
I am pretty sure there will be a C&D order from Transition soon. Maybe even from Specialized (just because they're a*sholes).
  • 1 1
Not a fan of the color scheme on the Patrol. Also the head tube angle looks super steep? i may be wrong, i have not looked at the geo specs, maybe its just the pic.
  • 1 0
well that threw me off. Was expecting a hippity hop link that references female "parts"
  • 2 1
Eh~ its cool....I kinda dig the look of the 572, but the patrol kinda reminds of the rocky mountains of old.
  • 2 0
well they are good enough for a World Cup top 20
  • 1 1
Yeah totally the bike... So is an Enduro bike
  • 1 0
Patrol in the past as United Bike, and also Polygon manufactured in our country indonesia.
  • 1 0
Pretty sure the patrol 591 is the bike being ridden in the ews finale promo video. A mate of mine rides for their wc dh team
  • 2 0
I don't get it... usd2800 gets you a new Santa Cruz or ibis...
  • 1 4
Nice Rocky mountain even copied the two tone almost to a T lmao. It would be nice if more companies would start thinking outside the box I mean the new polygon/marin is ugly and all but at least they are trying something new.
  • 3 1
Given that the Rocky Mountains have been in stores for a while now, and this doesn't launch until Jaunary, it might be that Patrol copied Rocky Mountain. Also, Rocky has been around a lot longer. Just saying.
  • 1 0
Man those are some nice nukeproofs
  • 1 0
 Superfly l00 enduro bike!
  • 1 0
