Part 1: Custom World Champs Bike Gallery - Lenzerheide DH World Champs 2018

Sep 7, 2018
by Ross Bell
Yesterday we got a hint of things to come with flashy looking frames being built up, but today those flashy frames took their final form with some drop-dead gorgeous designs on show throughout the pits. Take a look and decide what you think is the best of the bunch.

Vali Holl's YT takes it! That paint job is sick!
  • 7 0
It really is sick, wondering how much rider input goes into the mega custom paint jobs. Can't even imagine the price tag on any of these works of art.
  • 11 1
Vali Holl and Mark Wallace and Tahnee Seagrave and...and...
  • 1 0
@ShempHoward: Probably depends on the brand. The Saracen bikes look like the painters were told "keep the same design but you can change colors and add some small decals"
  • 1 0
Love it - and the super chromed-out shiny frames are spectacular too!
  • 2 0
Ya the blood splatter is awesome. Like the yellow green fade on that canyon too.
  • 1 0
Resemblance to the big S tree line right around when roam came out
  • 3 0
I like the nod to the mechanic, that should be more common!
  • 82 5
No amount of paint would ever make the Cube look nice.
  • 6 0
 Seriously... Wtf is that thing?
  • 12 0
has space for a bottle though
  • 3 1
 Looks like a Kona Stinky
  • 1 0
I don't actually hate the shape of the thing but it looks as burly as an early 90s XC bike. If they beefed up (like every single tube)the frame significantly it might be passable.
  • 40 1
I love this part of World Champs, all the custom bikes that reflect not only the country but also some touches that are meaningful and personal to the riders! Any chance we get some coverage of the custom XC bikes as well?!
  • 26 1
 Stay tuned!! Smile
  • 9 2
Martin Maes bike is the best yet! Love it. Could even be a standard colour way! So good!
  • 2 0
They really step it up every year, and haven't seen the helmets or kits yet. Giving Braxton's bike the most Moto X look award.
  • 1 0
@cunning-linguist: It couldn't look more Belgian, even with waffles as wheels....
  • 1 0
 Ummmmm Belgium waffles!!!!!
  • 4 0
@cunning-linguist: While Maes' rig is sweet, Vali's Tues take's the cake.
  • 1 0
@cunning-linguist: maes is the flying Belgium waffle
  • 1 2
 Belgian not Belgium
  • 37 4
And not one single bottle cage to be seen.
  • 7 0
I heard Wyn is racing with the beer helmet loaded. Could start a whole new option to bottle cages.
  • 34 5
All look great- but the giants are just ugly
  • 6 1
I kind of like Marcelo’s. It has a very abstract art feel to it.
  • 2 0
@mfoga: Its a Mondrian pattern - popularized by Look road bikes, but matches well here with the other components. I like it. Not super original though.
  • 1 1
Yes he was the most famous but others used that style, hence calling it abstract art vs Mondrian. I was never aware look used that style lol.
  • 2 0
@mfoga: La Vie Claire had a Mondrian inspired kit in 1985 and Look took the design from that and still use it today.
  • 9 1
Wow. World Champions becoming more and more a platform of todays painters to display their incredible art. Seems like fade paint jobs are the flavor of the month.
  • 3 1
I only count a couple of fade paint jobs there. Looks like the traditional two tone and stencils is as popular as ever, except for Brayton and the Hope team with their traditional Über level anodising.
  • 11 0
Bring back more metal flake in paint I say! It looks ace on Fearons bike :-)
  • 3 0
@cunning-linguist: Is it wrong to say I like chrome finishes more?
  • 1 0
We are lucky is a teams/riders initiative... otherways 80% of this paintjobs wouldn´t be aproved by UCI... and it would be really restricted for sure..
  • 1 0
@Fix-the-Spade: ha! No not at all! I like both the most! ;-)
  • 6 0
Giant, with all the money that y’all have u can never deliver a nice paint job. Time to step it up guys. Kona, GT you guys totally killed it!! N shout out to Santa Cruz also for always killing it!!
  • 7 1
Gwin, minnaar, vali, connor (no particular order)

nothing else compares imo really
  • 3 0
add the kestrel and i'm 100% with you
  • 2 1
Agreed... giant bikes in last, everything else in between
  • 6 0
Eye don't under stand Greg paint job.
  • 4 1
What happens to these after the event. Do the racers ever get to keep them? I remember Steve Peats Spitfire one vividly. That one was so cool. Not just the frame, but down to the smallest details..
  • 2 1
Most of the time to riders keep them. A few of the bikes 'go on tour' with the sponsors for shows and events. However, in the end I think the athletes own them.
  • 3 1
When YT was still in Reno they had Gwin's (2015) World Champs bike on display (2 years ago). Friggin' beautiful machine in person. YT has since moved to SoCal so don't know if they're displaying anything anymore.
  • 6 1
Is it possible to Kashima coat every single part on the bike. I mean every bolt full Kash!
  • 3 1
@ShempHoward: Well Kashima Coat only sticks to Aluminium, it's a kind of anodising, so no. There's nothing to stop you painting all the other bits the same colour though. Except you'll look like you fell out of a Lil Wayne video.
  • 1 0
@Fix-the-Spade: Well lil Wayne is just that but please bring me a bike all in on the same color/finish.
  • 6 0
Martin with the chainsaw tribute. Live long.
  • 1 0
well belgium, but i like the chainsaw idea
  • 3 0
 marc*
  • 1 0
 Ya I noticed earlier. Oops.@hardyk:
  • 1 0
Liking his Belgium theme, just picture that with a black spring. Understand fox needs exposure but usually the World's is where you can get companies to budge on colors.
  • 6 3
Most riders use crank bros mallet and ht's , few on the shimano saint... Radest of all, one of em use flats ! but radest of all is Dickson for not using any pedals at all .. true story
  • 3 2
Alex Marin saracen's looking Fresh. But is it me or it has the catalonian flag instead of the spanish one by adding one more red stripe? Not pretending to start a politic debate, just curiousity. Art is art and this one is such a masterpiece
  • 2 3
For a spaniard you don't seem to know your flags very well... for it to be a catalan flag it would still be missing 3 yellow and 2 red stripes more. If you want it mathematical, it is one stripe away from a "total" spanish flag, and 5 away from a "total" catalan flag. And even if it were, does it even matter if he's catalan and proud of it? Last I checked he is racing under the spanish federation and flag (same as galician counterpart Angel Suarez), that should be all that counts and the end of it.

This is mtb and really cool one-off bikes, leave politics out of it.
  • 3 1
@JoseMPM: "Not pretending to start a politic debate, just curiousity. Art is art and this one is such a masterpiece"

It looks like you didn't rode my whole comment, didn't you?
  • 1 0
@cht199: I did read your comment (riding it would have been hard), that just is a pretty lame excuse to start a political debate. What does it matter if he has the spanish, catalan or "independent republic of my balls" flag on his bike? As you so shrewdly point out, art is after all art.
  • 3 1
GT coming out swinging in 2018! Good form fellas. Good luck to everyone on these beautiful bikes and tip of the hat to all of the VERY talented artists who give us something tastey to look at.
  • 1 0
These bikes are gorgeous. I think the Saracen Myst and YT Tues are the best looking bikes this year, regardless of paint scheme.. It seems that any bike that looks like a Session kinda looks like a trail bike or enduro bike compared to other designs... oh and that Belgian GT might just win it all on race day Smile
  • 1 0
Okay i know its about the paint job but why is everybody on maxxis tires running maxxgrip and not supertacky?
And why a lot of racer run rims with 25mm inner width like the dt swiss 471? A few weks ago there was thar article on pinkbike and it looks like 30mm is the way to go.
  • 4 1
Okay I agree, Vali Holl's YT Tues is the best looking bike so far. Classy, catchy, and mean looking. Nice work!
  • 3 0
So glad to see a lot of these bikes without the orange or red "factory" forks!
  • 4 0
 marc wallace bike is sick!!
  • 3 0
Rumour has it that Gwin's mecanic will peel the first letter of just before he takes off.

Interesting that it looks like Vali Holl is the only Rock Shox rider that is riding a Vivid as a rear shock opposed to the Super Deluxe on everyone else's bikes.
  • 1 0
maybe its not metric? the tues frame
  • 1 0
There isn't a metric shock with the stoke or lenght long enough for the Tues. Engineers wanted a longer stroke shock so they decided to stay with imperial ones.
  • 1 0
 @vid1998: interdasting
  • 3 0
I'm calling for mandatory dope tests for the paint shop guys.
  • 3 0
Fearon’s Kona wins hands down for me

Alex Marin's Saracen is absolutely incredible. So cool to have the top like that but just the white bottom.
  • 3 0
The CUBE finally looks correct with 29er wheels.I actually like it now.
  • 2 0
now it really looks like a gate Wink
  • 2 0
 @kusanagi72: Haaa!!! True
  • 3 0
Somehow I naively hope Maes can win this thing.
  • 3 0
 He will
  • 1 0
Hopefully! Anyway, love his bike. The paint job is way better than the one done at the previous world champ he took part
  • 2 0
Matt Walker's cube rear shock looks like it's got too much hotdog for the bun.
  • 2 0
Adam Braytin and Jack Moir’s paint jobs are the winners in my book if their were a contest.
  • 1 0
Brayton's scott with the ano hope gear looks good.
  • 2 0
on a whole the Aussie's have the nicest paint jobs, but I would give my right nut for Mark Wallace's bike.
  • 2 0
Nobody else's curiosity picked up at the sight of Minnaar's "+ Breaker" Maxxis tyres? Just me?
  • 1 0
been around since the beginning of the year.
  • 1 0
@SnowshoeRider4Life: but those at the beginning of the year were the then-unbranded, now known as Assegai tyres, right? Or are these the same?
  • 1 0
 @JoseMPM: greg's been on the assegai's for over a year i think
  • 1 0
The photos of Fearons Kona don't do justice at all, it looks amazingly awesome:

Love the darker red of Wallace´s bike
  • 1 0
I don't quite get the blood splatter theme on Tahnee's and Vali's bikes.
  • 1 0
I don't think that's meant to be blood splatter on Vali's bike but on Tahnee's I take it she's out for blood!
  • 1 0
