Orange Reveals a Gearbox Belt Driven eMTB Using the Intradrive Motor - Eurobike 2022

While Orange didn't have any brand new production-ready bikes to show off at this year's show it did have something special that could offer a look to the future. Orange was showing off a unique gearbox belt-driven eMTB that uses the Intradrive system that is made in Scotland. The gearbox eMTB motor offers eight gears with a range of 430% and 80Nm of torque. The system can be used with a chain, but for this bike it was built using a belt.

Interestingly, the Intradrive system can be attached to any bike built for Shimano EP8, so Orange told us it was really simple to fit the new motor and battery as it all just bolts into the frame as if it was a Shimano system.

To make this build even more interesting Orange decided to build it with mostly European-sourced components. To achieve this they sourced parts from Hope, Selle Italia, Exposure and more. The suspension was meant to be from Intend but unfortunately it couldn't be delivered in time for this week's show.

This bike isn't available to buy, but we were told that it has been a good test, and in terms of supply chain was a lot easier to source parts for the build.

I hope the motor sounds like a bagpipe!

that's what happens when you give the aerodynamics team too much budget.

This is the future of electric mountain bikes. Shimano's innovation that was announced this week is laughable in comparison.

Agreed this makes way more sense than having an e-motor that still uses conventional drivetrain systems with freakin derailleurs...
  • 58 7
Agreed. Every dirt bike I have ever owned has a transmission, not a derailleur. Seems logical.
  • 13 2
Remember the Zerode DH bikes with the Affline hub transmission? I've designed an ebike with that same idea (but using a Kindernay VII). That way you can use a traditional ebike motor mount and have a high pivot. I'd like to think I could also swap out the Kindernay with just an aluminum axle+pulley wheel for those who want to use a traditional drivetrain.

But all my welders have backed out or are too busy haha. I could try to get Marino Bikes to do it, but then I'd have to wait 2 years

I always assumed an ebike would allow for a powered clutch that could make the annoying shifting characteristics of gear boxes a thing of the past. this sounds cool. Rear mechs are ridiculous.
  • 4 0
@hamncheez: that is pretty much exactly what I'd want. Basically a g1 with a motor, and a bit less travel on the rear (but still dual crown compatibility). If you're willing to do an international collaboration, I can blob some 'welds' on a crude, mild steel prototype and hit it with some body filler if that's of interest to you? Haha

@hamncheez: At least for the Alfine hub, the bike won't shift under load, at all even under human load. It stays in the current gear until torque is zero then it will shift. You would need to have an extended power cut when shifting and I imagine that will create a jarring and less seamless riding experience as far as an ebike is concerned. As a human that pedals an 11s Alfine, i can predict my shift, reduce torque just enough, shift and get back on the gas reliably. A robot bike would need some programming to make that process super smooth.

@hamncheez: Take a look at this bloger (Stefan) he get a ti custom design from china by alibaba of a bike that have been published here years ago.

The future already exist my friends as Valeo (bike car part maker like Bosch) released a motor with and integrated gearbox (made by effigear). I guess loosing 2% of efficiency and an extra 200g doesn't matter that much once you have a 25kg bike that chews transmissions.
  • 4 1
Thanks to Orange, the future looks bright.
  • 2 0
@hamncheez: i hope you grt it going. Ive said someone should dobthat for a few years now. I cant believe someone hasnt. Tge alfine hub was tge problem with that zerode , if i remember correctly. Kindernay should solve that. I bet you could find a chinese factory to weld up some aluminium frames
  • 1 0
@GBlanco: I've had titanium bikes made by a Far East manufacturer already, but as of right now all those welding shops are booked up for months, if not years www.pinkbike.com/photo/20805694

@bicyclelifestyle: Bafang motors have an optional shifting sensor that cuts the motor power during a shift. I haven't played around with it, but I do have two Bafang systems here in my basement (m510 & m800) awaiting a frame for them to go on.

@hamncheez: hoo clean bike! So sad to know that delay, frustrating. I ve seen even a zocelli ti model on sale, so exciting.

@GBlanco: ya mine is challenging to fabricate so I'm not worried about it showing up on alibaba

Until you run it flat. Pedalling a heavy Ebike with the motor off has around 4-5% drag, add in the extra weight and drag of a gearbox and the range anxiety will be real.
  • 3 0
@Daaaaaaaan: Why would you run it flat? Do you drive your car until it runs out of petrol?
  • 1 1
@Dnik: Shimano be like: " Urrrgghh but da moneeehh made off aa derraillaa..." They just wanna sell crap to us.
  • 3 0
 @hamncheez: I have a zerode G2 with a
home built motor for pedal assist and Alfine gearbox. Well, I did, until I blew the Alfine to bits. They're not designed for the extra torque. It's a single speed now and is heaps of fun as a self shutting DH bike.
I'm currently working on a project to put a motor on a pinion gearbox. In theory it will work.
  • 1 0
@conoat: mate, I was just commenting on the colour Wink
  • 1 0
@Dnik: if it rides like a dirt bike. I will buy one! Brap
  • 1 0
@Murdoch-the-Horse-Fracker: Kindernay rate their hubs up to 150 nm of torque, and nothing stopping anyone from putting a Kindernay rear wheel on a standard ebike. Kindernay says its OK.

 Room for a motor? Yup
Room for a gearbox? Yup
Room for a water bottle? A what?

Room to file away the entire written history of the SAS? Yup.

I commend Orange for doing what all the big companies couldn’t or wouldn’t……putting a gear box on an eBike.
  • 4 4
@browner: true, very little need for water on ebikes. The minute you start to sweat you stop pedalling.

Whereas the new Trek e-bike motor is the guy who slinks into the club unnoticed, this one is RuPaul arriving at the Met Gala.

 LOL!
  • 25 1
So take two of Pinkbike comment section's two least favorite things Orange and e-bike and combined them with one of their favorite things, gearboxes.
  • 15 0
This is the way. Ebikes are just too hard on chains and cassettes.
  • 16 3
Definately a step in the right direction for E-bikes and Gearboxes but they need to get rid of the grip shift.
  • 6 0
This has electronic shifting, not a grip shift, as far as I can tell from their website!
  • 1 0
@tpfenning: ah, I saw two cables entering the headtube and assumed it was the two cables for the grip shift.

Looks like we're finally crossing that threshold from bikes to motorbikes. I think at this point the only thing keeping the industry from going to throttle control are govt regulations.
  • 4 2
Folks have been calling e-bikes motorbikes from day 1 and they're not wrong. These things all exist on a spectrum. There's no real threshold.
  • 6 1
Sure there's a spectrum, but there is also definitely a threshold. The threshold is whether the power is assisting the rider input, or replacing it.
  • 1 1
@Paco77: is that threshold somewhere between Eco and Trail mode then?
  • 1 0
@bicycleriderguy: There is a threshold. It's quite clear in law in most countries. Since eebs don't make themselves go forwards without power input from the rider they are not considered legally motorcycles.
  • 1 0
@WillW123: No, because both of those require power input from the rider = not a motorcycle.
  • 5 0
This quote is a really good view into the future

"in terms of supply chain was a lot easier to source parts for the build"
  • 4 0
This is legit. Maybe next they'll put the chainring on the pivot, make sliding dropouts for the back axle, run a smaller back wheel/tire, and put a bigger motor on it.
  • 3 0
Since Orange already looks like a boat, this one doesn't look that bad. Probably rides like a freight train on wheels, though.
  • 4 0
Orange, a company with firm roots in tradition, rockets to the lead in e-bike design! Who saw that coming? I love it!
  • 4 0
Oh, Orange - stay ugly, I mean classy.
  • 2 0
Good thing they held out with the elevated chainstay, that paid off with this design. And that being said, I bet this thing rides suprisingly well.
  • 2 0
Good looking bike, but belt drives are the worst! Traditional chains can't hold up to the extra torque of the motors, the belts are going to snap quickly. BTDT
  • 1 2
They say it fits into a frame with a Shimano ep8 motor, really? It looks like they have tried to mash a square to fit into a round hole with a hammer, that gap and missing bolt, lovely place to store a ton of mud as if they aren't heavy enough already
  • 3 0
Looks like a pretty sweet orange
  • 3 1
I feel like it’s good 35 to 40% of bikes on my local trails are E bikes now and it only keeps growing

These bikes have always been so ugly, at least make them have lines that don't look straight from 2002.

  • 1 0
I was thinking to myself this morning that gear box e-bike is really needed. Not so much in the MTB world but more in the cargo/kid carrier bike world.
  • 2 0
Just a shame it's attached to a frame that went out of date before Stone Henge was built!!
  • 4 2
Another reason to buy an ebike.
  • 2 0
 Yes!!! No more chain lube!!!!
  • 2 0
What’s the point of a having a Hanger still bolted to the bike?
  • 1 0
The hub may sit against the inboard surface of the hanger rather than the frame directly. If so, the hanger would be required for correct spacing. Still, trimming it flush could have been a nice touch.
  • 1 0
considering how many logs I bash with my chainring guard, that tensioner is in peril....
  • 1 0
The perfect combination is: e-motor + gearbox + energy recuperation, 2 of 3 is here already!
  • 1 0
Yes, more of this! Intergration of gears and motor makes so much sense on ebikes.
  • 2 0
Just buy a moto already and be done with it

 No thanks!

 Brilliant.

Not an e-bike hater, but it does suck that it seems like 4 out 5 new bikes that pop up these days are e-bikes.
