Opening Day Survey 2022: What People Are Riding at the Whistler Bike Park

May 25, 2022

Late spring storms have been rolling through Southwestern B.C. along with cooler than average temperatures amassing snow at lower elevates, especially the Whistler Valley, and that meant a delayed opening for the bike park. One week later than scheduled, the hard-working trail crew had cleared snow from the trails and buffed out what they could to fire up the chairlift for eagerly awaiting mountain bikers. Those single-digit temperatures and muddy trails limited the lineups to only the brave, but the weather did progress throughout the weekend and the trails quickly dried from their sticky peanut butter state - even lower A-Line opened late Friday evening.

Our professional data acquisition system, aka Jacob Tooke (thanks mate!), greeted lap-hungry riders and recorded the stats of the first one hundred riders that he came across. The male to female ratio still hovers around four to one, which is not too far off of the 71-29% split of flat pedals to clipless. 27.5" bikes were still the most common, but are losing ground to the ever-popular 29" enduro weapons. Mixed-wheeled machines do seem to be here to stay, at least in the gravity-oriented segment, and have gained ground - up to 10%.

The usual popular brands made their appearances, however, there were also some outliers in the field. Norco took the top spot with their Aurum models, followed closely by the famous "looks like a Session" from Trek. Fox (Marzocchi) suspension dominated both front and rear components, followed closely by RockShox, although there were some smaller players, like Cane Creek, DVO, SR Suntour, EXT, and Ohlins that trickled in on either end of the bikes. SRAM owned the drivetrain and brake segments, and at no surprise, Maxxis owned the tire department with massive numbers; 75% front and 74% rear, where tubeless setups were still the most popular.

Check out the full details of what people are riding in the Whistler Bike Park and the exact statistics from the opening day...

@robokfc: I heard a rumor that beta is done. Didnt think it would last anyway.

What about the position in Westport CT that pays 110k. You can get better labor cheeper but you choose to have people working in a non outdoor friendly place that is the most expensive real estate in the world @robokfc:

@moondustdictator: My main issue with Beta was really the content. The ridiculously expensive bike builds and the US-centric destination reports never appealed to me in the slightest.

I am always curious to see where the best value is, and it's never at these excessive builds. I will always get more excited at a prospect of a great bike for a reasonable amount of money than these flashy "what would happen if money was no object" builds.

I'm sure Pinkbike is also feeling the pressure now, but I hope they will remain focused on what they do best, rather than trying to chase after Beta's failed business model.
  • 1 0
@grotesquesque: Great thoughts and I agree. Sadly I love some of the writing from Beta but never enough to justify the subscription. I think PB has done a good job of broadening their offerings over the last few years with the Field Test series which is amazing, Grim Donut (more on this please!) and Podcast.

So statistically the most average bike you would see there would be a Norco Aurum with a Fox 40, Rockshox Super Deluxe coil shock, SRAM Code brakes and X01 Drivetrain, rolling on 27.5 DT Swiss rims running tubeless Maxxis Assegai and DHR2 tires, and would have flat pedals

The most average rider would be a male wearing a Troy Lee Designs helmet, no neck brace, and Fox body armour/ knee pads

@toddball: This is an important point. I'm actually pretty close to this mode except my Aurum has Boxxers, 29" wheels and Magic Marys. But I don't have a Tundra, I have a Honda Fit, so at least I appear to be financially literate.

I just got a new one and it's amazing. It's just like in between a Commencal Supreme and a Commencal Furious. Kinda like a Trek Session at half the weight, eh. Not as spiffy as the Demo 8 but at least it's a Mullet. Brilliant Bike, perfect for Whistler.

I love my modern enduro 29er, but man go hop on a ten year old 26" dh bike. They are so much fun if you shuttle or have a lift. I love the retro scene thats growing. Maybe I should peruse the buy/sell for an old Trek Session 10. Those things were a blast.

I've built up my old Session 10 a couple of weeks ago, now as a 27.5/26" mullet. It is heavy, but is super nimble compared to my 29er. Plows through everything as well.

 @Bikes-are-awesome: and 4 extra wheelsets!
  • 2 0
@hamncheez: Of course I do! Smile It was still a way better fork than any Marzocchi back then (divey)
Complete bike from Trek was around 46lbs iirc. My was 44lbs with a 2005 Dorado (also heavy af Razz ) back in the early 2010's. Right now with a 380Ti and some lighter parts it sits at ~39-40... not much can be done when a frame alone weighs over 12lbs without a shock. Those are not as bombproof as some people think, but they ride surprisingly well.
  • 2 0
@kuejku: Hey don't you bad mouth the golden era of Marzocchi! They had some wild tech back in the day. They could predict when you were going to brake and start diving BEFORE you actually started braking!
  • 1 0
 @hamncheez: Hahahahahah Big Grin
Yeah, and it was easier to bottom them out during braking, than on 12ft hucks to flat. Oh the good ol' days...

  • 50 1
Cool stats, thanks Pinkbike. Sram brakes and drivetrains dominating at whistler. By the looks of most comments I would have guessed Shimano was more used.
  • 58 4
To be fair it's just what comes OEM, or what you can actually get hold of right now.
  • 20 0
If Shimano's supply chain issues continue 2023 will be 90% Sram.
  • 7 1
Pro teams are more split but they have access to it so we hear more about Shimano in bike checks and insta posts. Us normal shmoe's take what comes on a bike (OEM) or what we can get our hands on. I'd rather ride SRAM if I can get access to replacements and new stuff than ride shimano and never find anything if I break a derailleur.
  • 10 1
And let's not forget a total lack of Trickstuff.
  • 5 0
Shimano is really hard to find right now. I'm doing a frame-up Shimano build and mildly regretting it just due to how annoying it is trying to find parts.
  • 6 2
Sounds like I need to sell my Shimano parts as I want to switch to Sram
  • 4 3
Welcome to the upside down world of the pinkbiker where everything thats good in the real world sucks. Don’t maxxis tyres suck despite the fact everyone rides them and they’re the only tyres you’ll ever see blacked out at a downhill race.
  • 6 1
Not everyone rides Whistler opening day.
  • 9 1
SRAM brakes dominate rental fleets, as they can more easily be swapped for moto/aussie/Brit etc riders. Rental bikes and ex rental bikes are way more common around bike parks…

flag Ba1rog FL (May 25, 2022 at 13:43) (Below Threshold)
Sram is fine for Whistler, you don't really have to brake and it is not steep like the alps.

I boiled my Sram codes / elixir brakes in Chatel, Champery, Morzine and Morgins. The elixirs were super dangerous and unreliable.

Still have my 2008 Shimano Saint still work amazingly well and super reliable.
  • 1 3
@Poachninja: They’re obviously not going to survey the hire shop.
  • 2 2
@charliewentoutside: You have to shop around and you can mix parts too from different Shimano models. I have XT lever with Saint calliper and you can even mix with Magura. For the transmission it is hard to find everything even for SRAM, I destroyed my 3rd Sram GX but no stock so I had to buy a Shimano Zee but didn't find the right Shimano shifter for it. The Sram/Shimano combo still doing the job.

  • 18 0
Chainless in the park is pretty fun
  • 6 0
@dglass: I'm sure it is. It just amused me that it was the first year that had it in the stats. You'd expect it to have showed up at least once in the 3 other years.

Feel like back in the day everyone under 18 was chainless... And boosting every hit on A-line to flat. Damn kids
  • 2 1
I wonder if, for DH, using a pair of bevel gears and a driveshaft (with a gearbox, of course) would be viable. No chain growth, no maintenance, who cares about drag. Like that BMW touring motocycle.

2% of people of the Raaw DH? I think Ruben and Tristan are literally the only people in BC with those frames so yeah that works out if you interviewed 100 people. Not exactly representative of all of Whismas though.

Would have been cool to see actual counts along with % to get an idea of sample size. Among the many surprises, absolutely no Vittoria Mazza's was odd. They seem rather popular, at least in New England.
  • 24 1
Opening paragraph has that info: first 100 people Tom came across. Not all that meaningful with that sample size/method, but still interesting.
  • 17 0
@unfknblvbl: Stats brain but no read good.
  • 2 0
I love my Mazza/Martello setup but I can count on one hand how many other Vittoria tires I’ve seen on other mountain bikes in New England (every other road bike has GP5000s or Corsas for what it’s worth). Specialized and Maxxis are the two I see the most often on the trail
  • 1 0
I agree, surprised there’s not more. I ran those tires all last season and loved them!
  • 1 0
Article says this is what came out of the first 100 riders who would talk to them.
  • 2 0
@sjma: Concur. Mazza is right there with DHF.
  • 6 0
Another thing to note was that Opening day this year was a sweet powder day. Probably changed the results significantly with people skiing instead of biking.
  • 1 0
It is almost impossible to find a Mazza right now in NA. I searched and searched to pair up with my martello rear with no success.

Lots of people are worried about pinkbike as evidenced by the solid six month freak out the comment sections went through.

But in this case the closures were specifically related to print magazines. Pinkbike isn’t in danger… they ARE the danger.

Interesting that use of neck braces seems to be drying up. Noticed that at the races too. Anyone got any theories why?
  • 8 1
I think that most people, me included, find that the costs way outweigh the benefits. As always, you have to balance safety, with comfort. You *can* come dressed like the Michelin Man, but, that would be hellish to ride with. So riders find a balance.
  • 23 3
"Gwin stopped wearing one so I did too"
  • 4 1
@Jaib06: if anything it has a higher cost-benefit then body armor, since the broken neck can kill or paralyze you. If I had to budget, I'd take the bum knee over something worse every time...
  • 4 2
@ccrida-pnw: But they are 300$. I know a lot of riders who cant afford that. I am going to get one though.
  • 4 3
The only people I know that could have used a brace were riding somewhere where no one would wear one anyway. One, a roadie (hit by a car), the other on our local trails.

Not that I pay close attention, but the only person I know of getting paralyzed at the local bike park was injured in the back, the neck brace would have done no good.

So the argument in my mind is I could have a full roll cage and 5 point harness in my car, but, is it worth it?

I rarely wear any protection at all, other than a 3/4 helmet and sometimes gloves. Though I did buy some stuff with the intention of wearing it at certain places, we'll see if I follow through.
  • 4 0
@Jaib06: 100% agree. Back in the early years, we all wore Dainese/RockGarden/661 full suits, DOT approved Shoei moto helmets, and carbon knuckled gloves. Now we are wearing lightweight but safe Fox Rampage Pro MIPS helmets, Leatt chest/back protection, more minimalist gear that is more effective than the old heavy stuff. We still wear the Leatt neckbraces, but we have also had some ridiculous bad crashes that they helped with. My last one I broke a Fox Proframe helmet in multiple places when racing enduro in Glorietta near Angel Fire. The new stuff is so much better than the old gear!
  • 9 0
@kobold: what would the cost of those "average" bike be for the sample group? I don't have any opinion either way, but $300 doesn't seem like too much money when you start to price out the components we put on our bikes, etc.
  • 3 0
wonder if its partially due to dirt merchant and A line being shut
  • 8 0
It's mainly because they're not trendy anymore. Anyone that thinks otherwise is kidding themselves. Mountain bikers are fickle.
  • 1 0
 @DanielP07: My feeling as well.
  • 4 1
You see it in MX too. They were a big thing a while back and now not at all. I think I remember reading somewhere that there is very little statistical/medical evidence out there that actually supports their effectiveness. Just a quick google search kinda aligns with that theory. There are a lot of forums and non-expertise articles saying you should wear one bc of anecdotal evidence. The only "legit" statistical evidence proving their effectiveness I can find was done by Leatt. And while I don't discredit it, they definitely have a bias being the main seller of neck braces.
  • 2 0
There was a spike in 2020/2021 - my guess due to newbies trying mtb during covid. But then again fairweather riders wouldn't show up on opening day anyway...
  • 2 0
@yoimaninja: the reason i've got into the habit of wearing one, is a previous head injury - so statistically my head and neck are more at risk :-) i don't buy the 'too heavy' explanation though, my Leatt chest/shoulder protector feels way heavier.
  • 2 3
Because no other sport wear braces because they impair mobility, which is crucial for performing at peak levels safely. They’re not worth the one in a billion chance it’ll save you.

@IsaacWislon82: Still the best fork I've run. Perfect setup in 10 seconds flat, service is a snap and dirt cheap. Bought 2 used ones, soon to be 3 when I sell this 36.
  • 12 0
Yes but what percentage have a BMX background? C'mon people.
  • 3 0
THIS^^^ how did they miss asking that question... OK Day 2, just one question; "do you have a BMX background".

Please... Smile
  • 13 2
Wow - so 26” IS dead.
  • 2 0
I love the idea that it made a huge comeback in 2020 when people were buying used bikes for cheap. I wonder how many of those new starters switched to a 29er after Frown
  • 10 0
@lepigpen: Or they quit riding in 2021 and those bikes are in a shed.
  • 1 0
@JSTootell: 100%. bought a 26 inch cross country bike with 3x drivetrain and said "i dont think im THAT into MTBing"

but i cant blame em when proper bikes are 2-3k and all sold out.
  • 8 2
damn, Im surprised at the Brakes, with all the Pro riders in PB comments Surely shimano would hold the highest % but guess in the real world things are different aye Wink
And 29'ers, holy cow thats a big jump, 12% - biggest ever jump for "in favour of 29" - i think if more people got to try a proper mullet bike, We'd see alot more than only 10% but that did have an increase of 8%

Also why did clipless jump 14%? Im guessing more Pro's there this year
  • 5 0
I thought the brake breakdown was funny too
  • 6 2
my guess is the difference in quality between SRAM's gravity brakes like the code and their other brakes with a worse reputation. FWIW I've only ridden recent codes and they are an excellent brake, no real issues for me. I prefer them to saints but I haven't tried XT yet
  • 5 1
Code RSC are great and a world of a difference to their other models. Especially when you run Galfer Rotors and pads.
  • 4 1
@burnerAccount: only thing that makes em better is some MTX Gold pads. Tried galfer pros and it’s crazy how much better the MTX Golds were for me
  • 8 1
No Mike Bear tires made it? That's a shame. Lol
And what about the people who don't wear pads or helmet? Always one of them every time I'm at the park
  • 1 0
What park are you riding that doesn't require a helmet?
  • 8 0
Would love to see this mid season also. Opening day is a unique sample group.
  • 4 0
Trending is very interesting on these articles. For example, you can see a sharp spike in neck braces worn in 2020, then a big decrease ever since, with practically none in 2022. I wonder what accounts for that. The wheel size trend is also interesting, but that one makes much more sense.
  • 3 0
I wonder if it had anything to do with Brook Macdonald's spinal injury in late 2019. (I don't know enough about the circumstances to say whether a neck brace did or would have helped him, just hypothesizing that maybe his experience raised awareness about how vulnerable our spines are in a big crash.)
  • 2 0
@ABhardtail: yeah, but weird the sharp decrease after. You'd think those same people would still be wearing them. Unless they tried it, just hated how they feel, and said F it.
  • 4 0
There are going to be some upset brand managers out there. This is obviously just a snapshot, but it shows a decline in several brands and slow emergence of others. Cool to see some of the smaller brands getting more recognition too.
  • 6 0
Biggest surprise is the EXT Storia, doesn't even show up for the past three years and then at 4% and 5th most popular?
  • 3 1
It's available atm. This is as much a survey on inventory as it is anything else.
  • 4 0
Local distributor Alba picked up EXT recently... sometime in the last couple years anyway
  • 1 0
 @alexisfire: This is very true.
  • 2 0
Not only has Alba Distribution done a great job of making these available in BC but they're excellent shocks, and very enticing especially with all the problems that Fox's DHX2 seem to be having recently. I love mine on my trail bike, but unfortuntaly don't have one on my park bike yet.
  • 1 0
@nickw686: What problems with the DHX2?
  • 9 1
 Hold the line 26!!!
  • 6 0
Bikes have gotten faster. I wonder what the injury counts look like and which injuries dominate whistler.
  • 3 0
Funny how 2021 was such a conservative year, with less women, more 27.5" wheels and more flats than both 2020 and 2022. To be fair though, I'm a male that rides a 27.5" bike on flats, so I'm not helping the bike world forward much...
Can't afford a new 29" bike, don't like clipless on gravity oriented riding, but love the increased popularity of MTB amongst women though!
  • 7 0
 water bottles?
  • 5 0
Am I sad to see the lack of Hayes Dominion's, or happy because I get them all for myself?
  • 2 0
Happy. More spare parts that we rarely need!
  • 3 0
I'm surprised there weren't more maguras out there. MT7 had a presence, but not the MT5. The MT5 is a fantastic brake and a pretty good value, and AFAIK they have been relatively available.
  • 6 1
Does this Data include rental bikes ?
  • 2 14
flag KeithShred (May 25, 2022 at 11:37) (Below Threshold)
No it includes only people who can afford to buy their own bikes. So it's actually exclusive-inclusive. Get over it.
  • 2 0
@KeithShred: Huhu, great point. The first 20 bikes were rentals with whatever was cheapest in bulk.
  • 2 0
@KeithShred: I ask because if they include Rentals, then they are just telling us the equipment Whistler is getting deals on and not what the consumers are choosing to put on their bikes.

Rental fleet = Norco Aurums , DT Swiss rims + Sram brakes. If we excluded the rental fleet, we would get a better idea of the actual bikes people bring to the bike park....
  • 2 0
3 people on Norco Fluids which is Norco's "low-end" 130/120 bike. It could be the 24" kid's version, but those typically come with a Manitou J-Unit which isn't on the chart and wouldn't make any sense to upgrade.
  • 1 0
My guess was that the Fluid's were Jr riders as those frames are popular for the groms.
  • 3 0
Or older Fluids, the name has been around for friggin ages.
  • 2 0
@onawalk: Exactly. My wife has an old 2010 Fluid LT. 160mm of travel front and rear and built like a tank. Maybe I should put a cheap dual crown on it an make her a park bike lol.
  • 5 0
27.5 ain't dead! More than half the riders are still on smaller wheels.
  • 3 0
 YESSS! 27.5!
  • 2 1
I know right. I wish Pinkbike would stop trying to push 29ers on us so aggressively.
  • 1 0
Basically, stats on Whistler opening day is doing stats on what the locals (PNW) are riding. It would be interesting to do the same thing mid week in July or August when the tourists are here to see the difference between the PNW locals and the rest of the world.
  • 3 1
Super interesting. Thank you PB for posting.
I wonder about 2.0% Chainless. Does that mean no chain? or belt drive? or shaft drive?
Is there a brand called Chainless?
  • 3 1
Lots of folks ride bike park no chain, cassette, der, shifter, chain ring etc. Lighter, silent and quite literally free.
  • 2 0
@dmrluc: I am now suddenly tempted to try this with my old E29 frame (still have the fork/shock).
  • 5 0
In this case, it means simply no chain. I know this because that 2% is Tom and Christina from their Bike Park Bingo video, lol
  • 1 0
 @dmrluc:
Thanks for the clarification.
Kinda like an adult strider... but with a place to put your feet Smile
  • 3 0
@dmrluc: it's great up until the point you forget and go for a pedal stroke
  • 2 1
Do I need to know this level of detail about what everyone rides in a bike park across the continent to me which I’ve never been to? No. But I appreciate a good data and a graph when I see one damnit
  • 5 1
almost half the population on Assegais!
  • 4 0
I’m excited to see reasonable use of significant figures. Well done!
  • 4 0
We survived the Rona, we don't need no stinkin' neck braces!
  • 3 0
Apparently there were a few bikes with more than two wheels. The numbers add up to 102 % Smile
  • 4 1
That was me, my bike has 7 wheels: a 24", two 26", two 27.5", and two 29ers. I like to make sure I'm always the coolest guy around regardless of the crowd. It's a steel rigid with coil sprung air suspension with a carbon frame and electronic wireless cables and a titanium frame with clipless flats and my dropper post drops 300mm and it's an aluminum frame. Pretty dope.
  • 2 0
You what tires you won't find on this list? Anything Gwin has used since he stopped winning. Come on AG, put on some sharpied Maxxis tires.
  • 1 0
He needs some ENVE rims, too.
  • 4 0
Off all this info, who is responsible for causing all he brake bumps?
  • 4 2
 Mostly americans probably
  • 2 0
Alright, seems like 26" is officially dead now.
FOX 40 increased its market share by 100% p.a. for the past years... seems like in 2020 nobody liked them?
  • 3 0
I would have expected more sessions
  • 39 0
It can be misleading. Lots of bikes look like a Session.
  • 2 0
 Norco Country -
  • 5 2
This was the best thing ive seen on the internet in a while
  • 3 0
Where are the graphics with trendlines, preferably animated, and in 3D?
  • 2 0
Wonder if the conditions of the day affect the pedal decision as there is quite big swings between 2020,2021,2022
  • 2 0
 Snow tyres.
  • 2 0
also the year where only canadians could go probably affects that too.
  • 3 0
Pinkbike should setup a retro day and then take stock of what shows up.
  • 4 1
It's nice to see the increase in Women coming out.
  • 2 0
Formation got my wife into mtb.
  • 2 0
1 to 3 ratio... that's actually really good for a bike park
  • 4 2
Dear Pinkbike- People still love riding 27.5. Stop trying to push 29ers on us so aggressively.
  • 2 0
I wanna know more about what spokes people ride. And stem lengths,. And socks
  • 2 0
hate to "brake" it to you... but a "Hope tech pro 4" is a hub not a brake. haha... Hope tech 4 V4/E4 is a brake.
  • 2 0
I like to review the percentages and make sure I'm riding the least popular set up.
  • 1 0
Congratulations to the Maxxis Assegai/DHF/DHR tires and the SRAM Code brakes, by far the most dominant products in gravity-assisted MTB.
  • 1 0
 Frames opening day 2020 @MattBeer

@SenditforJesus same typo we made in 2020 - 100%. Thanks!
  • 2 0
where was the santa cruz rims?
  • 2 0
 Boxxer loses it's top spot.
  • 2 0
Only until half the FOX stuff blows up next week and needs to be sent in again...
  • 2 4
How does the Norco Range go from being number 2 in 2021 to off the list in 2022? I think whoever was counting could tell the difference between a Aurum and a Range so they just mushed them together. They are the same bike with a different linkage now anyway, right?
  • 4 0
I mean, it's just a sample size of 100, right? Could just be random chance; with a sample size that small you'd get significant differences every year even if exactly the same people with the same bikes were there every year.
  • 2 0
@charliewentoutside: sample of 100, what is the population? Going from #2 to not on the list would be hard with this sample size
  • 1 0
What was the total number of bikers on opening day?
Otherwise it seems people are getting better stuff, which is good
  • 2 0
who is the 3% riding 20 inch??
  • 2 0
Interesting. Flats for the win! I wasn't expecting that.
  • 1 0
This says to me that apart from tyres most people buy a stock bike and don’t bother changing any of the components
  • 2 0
I'm nerding out so hard on this right now.
  • 2 0
Best of luck to the 3 people who showed up to Whistler with a Norco Fluid
  • 1 0
So no one was running an eleven six?
  • 7 6
Is Maxxis annoyed that so man run the DHF in the rear?
  • 3 1
 I surely am...
  • 20 1
Ppl prob move the front to the rear when it wears out
  • 1 0
1 out of every 10 bikes is a Norco Aurum? That's hard to imagine!
  • 5 0
 Not in Canada.
  • 6 0
 It's the Whistler Rental Fleet.
  • 2 0
@burnerAccount: c'mon, how many of the first 100 people lined up are renting? I could be wrong here, having never attended Whistmas, but it's not how I imagine things playing out on a weekday morning full of local and semi-local park rats...
  • 1 0
Some handy clip boatd work here....lots of data

What about IPA, pale ale and lagers . ? Liquid courage for lunch .

  • 1 0
Is that first photo of different instances of the same guy?

How did Fox become so much more popular this year?
  • 1 0
Never understand why 100% don't top every category they are mentioned in

Excellent article btw!

39% Of people will be experiencing serious disappointment running codes.
  • 2 2
So when I thought I heard turkeys were just SRAM Codes.
  • 6 8
You're saying people riding in Whistler identify either as male of female?
Come on Pinkbike, it's 2022, you know this isn't correct....
