Opening Day Survey 2021: What People Are Riding at the Whistler Bike Park

Slightly later than usual, but still a month before last year, the Whistler Bike Park opened on Monday, May 31. The lift lines were long, but the weather was perfect and the ideal trail conditions made the wait more than worth it. We once again had our eyes out to assess the statistics of the opening day, and to compare them to the previous years.

Flats pedals and 27.5" wheels reigned supreme with a record-breaking 84.21% of riders on flats and 67.36% sporting the smaller wheels. Despite an increase in the number of brands released mullet bikes, we saw just 2.11% of riders rocking a 29er up front and a 27.5" wheel in the back, which is the same percentage of riders that were on 26" bikes.

Trail bikes reigned supreme this year, with the Giant Reign taking top honours ahead of the Norco Range. However, the most popular fork was the RockShox Boxxer, meaning there were still lots of downhill bikes out, with the Norco Aurum, Commencal Furious and Commencal Supreme being the most popular. The second-most popular fork was the RockShox Lyrik with the Fox 36 close on its heels. RockShox were also the most popular rear shock out there with the Super Deluxe followed closely by the Fox DHX2. SRAM were once again the most popular in the braking and drivetrain department with the Codes and GX derailleur.

DT Swiss had a commanding share of the rims on show once again, with Maxxis being the go-to tire brand with its Assegai, Minion DHF and Minion DHRII taking the top three spots. Tubeless tires were the favoured tire setup over a tube option, although several riders said that they were running a half and half set-up after being unable to seat a tire due to too many dings to the rim.

Here's a look at all the statistics from this year's opening day compared to the previous three.

What I get from this is that all Americans ride 26" Specialized Demos.

There’s still a couple of us Canucks rocking a demo on 26’s eh!

SRAM guides have no business in the bike park.
  • 9 0
@powderturns: but the bikes they're on sorta do, which wasn't always the case. My guesses - a lot of people can't quite justify a brake upgrade yet - or the brakes they want are out of stock.

 @powderturns: just use them less

@eddycheever: Americans who ride 26ers don't care about no border rules!

Many of those Demo's come from rentals (same with the guides...). With the current restrictions on, rentals around town are very low!

  • 1 4
@pugafi: So you're assuming the elevated numbers for 2020, 2019, and 2018 for Specialized Demo ridership is due strictly to US riders visiting BC...seems like a stretch. Maybe it's more to do with a turnover of rental stock from Demos to some other bike.
  • 1 0
@SuperHighBeam: I think hes suggesting less tourism in general and around rental bikes with covid/vax regulations everywhere, home dirt and in BC.
  • 1 0
@andybeck: Yes he may be suggesting that but that is also assuming that US riders rock Specialized Demos more than Canadians. I'm not sure that is necessarily true. I suspected that perhaps Canadian bike rentals have rotated out Demos in favor of something else. I suspect the change in numbers is driven by more than just US visitors. I'm only speculating though, I don't know anything definitively.
  • 1 0
@SuperHighBeam: i've done a few seasons here and Demos always make up a high % of the rental bikes here in Whis
  • 1 0
@KrishanK: I guess that supports the theory that most of the Demos that are ridden at Whister are either rentals or rigs brought by American visitors to Whistler. Doesn't answer the question as to why Canadians don't ride the Demo, or why the Demo is some common to Americans. Is it just that Specialized is to USA as Commencal is to CAN?

I'd say it's time to pull the plug, but it won't die... It's just gonna be that weird uncle that got divorced and started dating a 60 something year old who started an Only Fans page, and bought a convertable Mazda MX5. • 21 0
I think the 1.05% is just one person, since there is consistently 1.05% on the weird random parts. Like the person who was using a Sid.

  • 8 0
@imnotdanny: If there were 95 people, than a single person would be a 1.05%. so that's not an unreasonable assumption. I'll assume some of the others that have different numbers (pads and protection shows a minimum of 1.18% and tires shows 0.53% are related to changes in how many were observed (tires usually comes in twos on a bike) and it doesn't seem unfathomable that there'd be 10 people without pads in the observed group.

@jaame: Not necesarily. you dont want 60 kg women in army. if 110 kg heavy man needs to be carried she cant help him.
  • 2 0
@trauty: there are many jobs in the army. Not all require the ability to carry 110kg men off the battlefield. Also, I doubt there are many soldiers at 110kg. They would have to be tall to fit in the required weight limit at 110kg I think. My mate got told he had to be 93kg or under at 6'1" I recall. Something about eating too much of the budget.
  • 1 0
@jaame: understood. but if the women specifically apply to be nave seal , than what?
  • 3 2
@trauty: everything should be based on how good you are in my opinion. Not age, sex, skin colour or anything else. If a woman is good enough to be a navy seal and wants to be one, then she should be one. Of course, being good enough might mean having to carry a 110kg bleeding and limp comrade, or make rational life-and-death decisions every day of the month. Most women may not be naturally predisposed to those things, but I'm sure there are some that are. Some of the sheilas at my CrossFit are absolute beasts that can pound weights and run all day. In my opinion, the physical side of what might be required in the armed forces is less of a hurdle than people think. The emotional stability side, that will be the question. Not many women could answer yes to the question "Are you capable of being rational every day of the month?"

@sspiff: Interesting to see how consistent the Magic Mary has been great after year.

The big loser takeaway for me was seeing how few people are afraid to take their #YTrash to the world's #1 bikepark and be publicly associated with it on opening day. YT has gone from 8% of bikes 2 years ago to just 3% this year. Seems like alot of people have been learning from my blog.

The Specialized Demo also took a big hit, but the Big S made up for it by having more riders on their Enduro and Stumpjumper, which really shows you the capability of their shorter travel bikes.

The big disappointment for me was the lack of e bikes and gearbox bikes.
  • 30 1
@DoubleCrownAddict: are you trying to be funny
  • 3 0
Those numbers get a bit inflated when considering OEM setups. We're seeing alot of bikes equipped with assagais out of the box, and given that it is a good tire choice, (and people are generally resistant to change) I'd expect many people to replace worn tires with new tires of the same model. I personally still find the DHR2 to be the most consistant tire, and most ideal in all conditions. I felt the assegai was a great tire, but didn't have the same level of grip in all conditions. Again, that's my perspective, and I'm biased... As I would expect most people who are used to something as specific as tire choice.
  • 16 1
@DoubleCrownAddict: I would suspect that were seeing less YTs due to their terrible customer service. I honestly don't think your blog really made an impact on those numbers. On a positive for you however; they are doing a fine job of pushing new customers away just fine all by themselves.

In regards to specialized, I think there are a few reasons for this. The Demo is no longer their flagship bike, that crown is held by their enduro. The pricepoint for their spec is high in comparison, and carbon is still highly desirable, even though it's been proven to not be superior in most cases. I feel there are only a few companies doing carbon right.

As far as ebikes and gearbox bikes, ebike prices are still quite high, and thus will negate a large portion of sales for new bikes. It's also early I the ebike Era, so I'd expect as some of these bikes go on sale as second hand, we will likely see a rise in the future, as the people who can afford them now, generally have more than one bike.

As for gearbox driven bikes, that is already a niche market, and until we see a significant rise in gearbox development and use in the OEM market, it will remain there.

No, not mad at you, exasperated perhaps.

Add the evangelical tone of your opinions that leave little room for alternative viewpoints to the general sense of superiority that you give to those viewpoints and the end result is this: the idea of having a discussion on PB in which you are involved makes me depressed about how the internet has encouraged, among other things, a sense of self righteousness (that we all, including I, suffer from) in us that precludes most of us from an educated discussion.

I should just ignore you, however that is difficult given your evangelical nature.

In the same way that you react to the mention of YT as a brand, I react to many of your opinions in a similar way.

If you wish to retain the right to give us all the continued benefit of your obvious opinions of their company, so you may have to deal with my right to let you know how I feel about you as a member of this community.

There is no malice; it is me expressing my considered opinion about you as a member here.

@mtshakira: Didn't built anybody, just called Waki out for racially offensive statements which he refused to ever apologize for or even acknowledge. That night he consumed a combination of psychedelic drugs and Polish vodka which led to his delusional paranoia before he deleted his account again. It was an episode worthy of a blog and might be some interesting reading. The takeaway that I will explain in my blog is that taking the route of racially offensive behavior always leads to failure, and it's best to acknowledge it and apologize rather than stubbornly torture yourself with the denial of it and pretending it wasn't offensive.

It's something the owner of YT could learn from. By refusing to acknowledge their mysogyny and use of offensive Nazi Rune images in their marketing, he is just letting it linger and not letting the company move beyond it.

I, and I suspect many others here, have chosen not to respond to your blog(s), not because I think your assertions are falsehoods, but because, and read this carefully: I don't - give - a - shit about it.

You may well be correct in your assertions about YT. I don't know. I don't care. If YT wish to comment, they can. They have not, to my knowledge responded, and I - don't - care.

It is not incumbent upon anyone to have to engage with you just because you write a blog.

You are allowed by liberals such as myself to hold those opinions. No, criticism of you is not aimed at your beliefs, it is firmly aimed at your - constant - referencing to your beliefs and you - constant - issuing of challenges to others to somehow prove themselves to you through reasoned argument related to your blog contents.

So, I have no desire to discuss the merits of your opinions, however, that does not give you license to use anyone's silence as proof positive of a) their lack of intellect and b) the superiority of your position and intellect and c) justification for name-calling and general lack of decorum in your choice of language.

Forums are better, I believe, in the absence of such.

So, go ahead and believe what you believe. I believe I speak for many here who do - not- care about your personal crusade.

What I do care about is the community here.
And you sully it in my opinion.
I wish you would leave, however I am under no illusion that that is unlikely.

So, I politely ask you to desist in your calls to me to take up your crusade or challenge it. Thank you.

 @ DKA

I was making a suggestion to allow you to be able to give your opinion and for those you accuse to respond.

You chose to again throw around insults, rather than suggest any kind of compromise.

I suspect you are a coward.
I suspect you are scared of directly contacting YT for fear of what they would say.
I give not one shit about YT as I said, I am more concerned with removing the cancer that is you from this site now.

As I have said and you have failed to comprehend, it is your attitude to anyone who dares to do anything other than go along with you 100% that is a scourge on this community that riles me and others.

I do not easily throw abuse directly at people, but I will at you. You truly deserve it.

The way you interact in this forum is pathetic.
You, are pathetic for being little more than a cyber bully.

PB are verging on pathetic for allowing you to continue to interact as you do after warmings and suspensions.

Whether or not you have a point about YT is irrelevant to the above.

I wish never to have to interact with you again, and I reserve the right to take any action that would allow me to do so, starting with pressurizing PB directly to remove you.

I will let you and everyone know their response.

While I am doing that, why don’t you do something positive to further your cause and go on and contact YT.

Bet you don’t though, In fact I will take a leaf out of your book of intellectual fallacies and say, go on, prove me wrong.

@orientdave: hey man I totally agree that DCA says the dumbest shit imaginable, I'm convinced he's trolling tbh. Banning him isn't the answer though, it doesn't work. Free vpns are plentiful. The real answer is just ignore him. What you're doing is exactly what he wants. Long drawn out responses are what gets him off. Only real answer is ignoring him, don't acknowledge a single thing he says. If that were to happen all the fun is gone. A strange part of me actually enjoys reading his ridiculous rants on yt and derailleurs lol but I understand why it really bothers some people. From this point forward, ignore everything he says. Banning isn't the answer, unless he truly is harassing people over private messages but I haven't seen any evidence of that. Don't feed the trolls.

  • 1 0
@TheR: I was not aware of that. Thanks for the advice. It's rather unfortunate though. I do enjoy reading people's perspectives, and for the most part the general comedic undertones to most people's comments. We're all entitled to out opinions, however; It seems too many people are "triggered" and somehow turn a simple disagreement into a personal attack. I disagree with DCA, however he is entitled to his own opinion. Where I get frustrated on that front is he was banned for promoting his blog (not because of the back and forth bs on this forum, as there woukd be alot more people banned). When he decides to nonchalantly bring it up in an attempt to bait people into reading it. That's the same as adding a hyperlink. If people are honestly interested in his potential findings, Google does a great job of that. On the other hand, continuing to throw insults and calling him out is really no better than what he is doing either. This is truly a no win situation until people stop pouring gas on the fire. This happens way too often... It's getting old now.
  • 1 0
@jomacba: His 'Blog' is hosted by Pinkbike - his suspension was not for over-promoting it - more clicks help PB charge more money to advertisers, so PB doesn't care about that. He was suspended for name-calling, bullying, and other forms of Direct-Messaging aggression, despite what the suspension was entitled.

The tube vs tubeless for 2021 doesn't make any sense. As for the previous years, I'm blown away at how many people are stull on tubes.
  • 11 2
Stood out to me too. What kind of PSI would you have to run for WBP on tubes? 50? The performance gap would cost thousands to close with suspension.
  • 8 1
PB seems to always suggest there are only a couple of people still running tubes, pretty crazy to see it's such a high amount. I still rock the tubes
  • 7 2
@Blackhat: I actually prefer running tubes. Saves a lot of hassle for me even with the occasional pinch flat. 35 psi front and rear.
  • 8 1
I bet a couple of those are either still riding the tube from their last trailside fix, or extending the life of a damaged tire.
  • 2 0
I run high pressure in my tyres so some of my bikes still run tubes. I haven’t had a flat on either setup in a really long time.
  • 2 1
Still on tubes here. Went to Tubeless but saw no benefits and it's just extra hassle, so went back to tubes. I run the same rim (EX471), tyre (Magic Mary) combo on all my bikes and have very few issues. I run around 27R/24F psi on both my DH and trail/enduro bikes, HT a little harder.

  • 2 0
@imnotdanny: bit too far for whistler might be able to clear crank it up though
  • 1 0
@mior: I think it's just tape, I did the research a while back because I was thinking about doing it on my bike, I never ended up going through though. Tires are the most expensive part.
  • 1 0
 @mior: depends on your wheels
  • 1 0
@Rogueuniform77: cheap stock narrow rims that arent marked as tubeless ready
  • 1 0
@mior: go to the manufacturer website and find out if they are indeed tubeless all you'll need is tape sealant and valve cores
  • 1 0
@Rogueuniform77: they arent branded only with "relic", which is the name of the bike
  • 2 0
@mior: to get a decent idea without removing your tire, you could deflate the tube and check if the tire stays firmly seated. If the rim isn't designed for tubeless it will be pretty easy to unseat the bead. If the rim is tubeless style, you'll find it takes some intentionality to pop the beads down into the rim's center channel.

The real question is how in the world are Shimanos still top 3??? In a world that everyone good demo Hopes, Dominions, and curas, Shimano would be lucky to be top 5 in count. Brakes are just way too good across the board now to be riding brakes that have zero consistency.

Hopes > Dominions > Curas> Mags> Trp > others.
  • 8 2
Codes are flat out amazing, shimanos are good but they’re not codes. Sram has a lot to iron out in the drivetrain department but their (code) brakes are flawless
  • 5 1
 @fewnofrwgijn: so are Guides/G2.

The hate they get is total bs built on the old Avid days. They're absolutely reliable and powerful, just don't last as long on an extended downhill run, which they're not designed for.
  • 8 0
Sram gets a bad rap from their older brakes. New sram brakes are better than shimanos. It's nice not wondering when your brakes are going to engage every time you pull the lever

CMIIW, so half & half is like using tubes on tubeless prepped rims? Taped and with sealant, except with ordinary tubes installed instead of tubeless valves and no tubes? I used to run these kind of setups before using inserts. Running sealant either outside or inside the tubes if they had removable cores. Sometimes adding dried sealant or rubber cement on the base of the valves to emulate tubeless valve flanged rubber base. Called these kind of setups as tubed-less. Wink

-Odds are good you are a Man/Boy
-Ride 27.5 tires/wheels in a tubeless arrangement
-Ride Flats
-You are likely to be riding a rig from Giant, Norco, Commencal, YT, Trek, or Specialized
-Equip SRAM Code or Guide Brakes
-Sport a Rockshox Boxxer Fork
-Sport a Rockshox Super Deluxe Shock
-Equip SRAM GX Drivetrain
-Equip DT Swiss Wheels
-Equip Maxxis Assegai or Minion tires
-Rock a TLD or Fox helmet
-Wear Padding from Fox, POC, or RaceFace
-Leave the neck brace at home

Most excellent market research. Thank you Pinkbike! I was really shocked that Fox 40 wasn't the prevalent offering, but maybe its the home country spirit shining through. US Bike Parks may be more heavy on the Fox kit.
  • 1 0
Oem offering and aftermarket pricing are a big reason for the rockshock dominance. Also most people I know (myself included) are tired of fox's awful customer service. They are a horrible company to deal with. It's why the smaller companies have gained a lil ground (DVO primarily) IMO.
  • 1 0
@Colson217: I guess I've never had to engage with Fox customer service so I don't have an opinion on that matter. It sure seems like Rockshox is usually competively priced with Fox and is equally used in OEM. There must be more to it than OEM offering and aftermarket pricing as I'd say Fox and Rockshox are neck in neck in that respect.
  • 1 0
@Colson217: you can sometimes find a boxxer for lik 1000 OEM but fox forks are super expensive

Isn't every thing 7, 11, and 12spd X01 (plus XO1 DH 10spd)? Are there that many people using 9 and 10spd XO?
  • 1 1
xo1 is the 11 speed group. Remember that 11 speed was where they went full bore 1x, so the 1 refers to the chainring. 12 speed is called eagle. Before that I don’t think they had speed designations in the model name.
  • 1 1
@Blackhat: XO1 is everything that's 1x, including XO1 Eagle (12 spd) and XO1 DH (7 and 10spd). So was the second most popular derailleur at Whistler on opening day really 10+ year old second-gen XO (10spd) or OG XO (9spd)?

@NoahColorado: Ahh, you're right. Guess my brain just sorted the naming into some sort of useful info. Sorry to post "facts" without checking.

No Monster T’s this year. I was of the perception that they’d go great with a mullet?!

This is first year the most common bike isn’t a downhill bike. If someone adds it up, is it also the first years there is more people on trail bikes than downhill bikes?

So did I miss the full face vs xc helmet section?

I wonder how many of the DHR tires are ACTUAL DHR:s and not DHR II:s? Original DHR:s are so rare these days people tend to forget the "II" part so I guess veeeery few.

I thought it was interesting how 2020 seemed to have many statistical anomalies compared to other years. Very interesting survey.

Just a side note: how hard is it to get some properly formatted tables? Lots of cool data here.. but is honestly quite difficult to read.
  • 2 2
where is the stat showing how many people standing in line have been vaccinated? - thats the only one that really counts this year -

 @jlevandoski: you new here?
  • 2 0
@Blackhat: been here since 2012 and I've NEVER seen someone with that flag - not knocking it, I'm impressed!
  • 1 0
@jlevandoski: alright, fair enough. I’ve been here a much shorter time and seen them on several accounts. It’s probably one of those things that once you’re aware of it you start noticing.

 16.84% with tubes?? Wow
  • 9 0
Ah, actually 33.68% with tubes. Edited now.
  • 1 1
 @sarahmoore: Even bigger 'wow'
  • 3 0
Why so surprized? Tubes are your only hope to get home not tubeless ofc in case of a unrepairable flat.
  • 1 0
@pballbiker:I do carry one on long trail rides for a spare. However, never on DH/Park runs and if I have to use one, it's pulled out and repaired back to tubeless soon as possible.
