Since the legendary carbon shelled Atom Bomb Hubs in the 1990’s through to our hugely successful Generator wheelsets, Nukeproof have always been synonymous with creating wheelsets and hubs.

History

Last year we launched our awesome premium tier of components: Nukeproof Horizon. This range encompasses a host of upgrade components for gravity focussed riders. Already this line has won rave reviews and features “test winners” like our Horizon Flat and CS/ Cl pedals. As with all Nukeproof products they’re tested at the highest level, Sam Hill’s Enduro World Series winning Mega 275c featured many Horizon components (not just his legendary Signature flat pedals).

Designed and developed on Ireland’s harshest trails with our riders and engineers these are a perfect upgrade for any serious mountain biker. They're Trail, DH and Enduro ready, with all-new super durable and beautifully finished CNC 7075 aluminium Hubs with 84 points of engagement (contact point ever 4.2deg) and roll on improved EZO Japanese sealed cartridge bearings to make sure all your power is seamlessly laid down to the rear wheel.

 Awesome. Non proprietary j bend spokes, normal rim tape configuration. Brass nipples for longevity and ease of maintenance. Rims not too hard but not too soft. Holds tires on safely. Could be some of the best wheels out there

 Bike weight may not matter a ton, but rotating weight does. These wheels are pretty heavy but the price is nice. Cheap, Light, Strong - Pick 2.

 Note that that's the weight with tape and valves installed. I doubt any other companies give their weight like that.

 They did well in choosing the excellent WTB Frequency I29 rims for these wheelsets. I have the I29s on my 27.5 full suspension bike, and the I25s on my 26" dirt jumper. Nukeproof is a good descriptor for the Frequency rims. The UST-compliant bead lock channel works SO well.

 After destroying two i29 rims in a matter of months, I had to switch to dt Swiss. Wtb has great customer service, but their rims are soft, soft, soft.

 @spankthewan: the Gererator DH that were WTB i25 frequency teams are the same, I dented my rear rim in no time at all riding rocks, kept away from the rocks they seem ok. It's a shame as they do have a great tubeless profile, don't weigh too much, look good and feel good to ride.

 Be really cool if Nukeproof made these in standard-flange 32H shells as well (keeping the 7075 shell, 84pt engagement, etc). Using brand-name (EZO / Japanese) bearings is a great touch, Hope have been selling their hubs with home-brand junk bearings forever, and as much as I love their hubs otherwise, it's a poor place to cut costs.

 @uuuu Hasn’t Hope been using quality bearings ever since they came out with Pro2 evo? The pro2 were sht but pro2 evo was legit. Maybe they went back to bad habits with Pro 4 but I know nothing about that.

 @ryan77777: These hubs are rebranded Novatec hubs, fyi. Same ones Santa Cruz sec's on there entry/mid tier builds. If you want a similar hub, but with better engagement, look at the Novatec Factor hubs - they are one step above these.

 All these new wheels coming out for tubeless applications but they all still use rim tape. Why not just go FULL ust and have a non drilled rim bed that doesnt need tape? Mavic's patent on ust is up at the end of july this year so other manufactures wouldnt have to pay them royalties for licensing the design. Ive had a spoke break and puncture the tape on many occasions ending my ride, plus putting new rim tape on when this happens is a bit of a hassle. Sure you need more complex nipples that are threaded on both the inside and outside, and it can be more difficult to deal with when truing the wheel, but i would rather that than have my ride end due to a flat caused by a rim tape puncture

 Proprietary spokes and nipples can be a PITA to source and replace. I was pretty intrigued by Enves rim strip development. That's something that could work well universally.

 I have a Mavic mavic ksyrium elite rim that has cracked at least 6 of the threaded spoke holes. Not a very durable design. I will take a standard spoke, nipple and tape any day over broken/cracked rims. Mavic products look cool,but not very high quality.

 Why not go full UST
1. Regular rims are much easier to produce and cheaper.
2. Proprietary spokes are expensive and hard to get
3. Bead walls on UST rims are taller thus rims are havier ans it is easier to dent them
4. Rim tape of proper width works just as well as a full on ust system.

If you see glueing gorilla tape on the rim and making a hole in it for the valve stem (that can be sourced from an old tube) as a big hassle and trouble to go through - kill yourself Big Grin

If that is a hassle for someone then his life must be filled with pain of being unable to deal with any more complex issue. How do you then deal with a puncture in a car, fix an issue with invoice for your mobile when network wants to charge you double as much as they should, how do you go through having a broken arm, or how do you feed kids, dress them up, brush their teeth and take them to school? I mean... hello... yes ust is cool in theory, you buy a wheelset install a tyre, a bit of sealant, done. Ever built a tubeless wheelset? I did, a few. Let me tell you, that’s worse than getting gorilla tape and a valve stem, and nearly every single of those rims are narrow and weak.

It seems that you are quite ignorant of the concept of persona, how one behaves on particular day, in particular setting. Well you don't see real me here, if you met me for the first time in person you wouldn't see the real me, when you ride with me 10 times you don't know me, if we've been friends for 10 years you would get the most consistent version of me in relation to you. That is because there is no real me and real you. If you know so much about life to give someone on the internet some tips on it, then you should understand a bit of that. Such mechanism is true for your body and mind as well, just like with everyone else on this planet. Hence I don't give a damn how I appear to people on the internet becaue chance of meeting them in real life is next to none and even if, you have no clue who I am so you maybe like me or dislike me even more.  @WAKIdesigns: It takes quite a lot of reading your posts (like, a lot...) to get a handle on what you're all about. I actually think you may be a well rounded human being, just with an aversion to self-censorship and an interesting /challenging way with words, which is all good ultimately. However, you are absolutely anti-euphemism, as you use the harshest possible way of saying something relatively banal, rather than the other way around. Abrasive comments are always going to rub someone up the wrong way, regardless of the sentiment. But when you start knowing someone you gradually calibrate to them and stuff that would sound shocking coming from someone else becomes normal. Basically, your posts can't be read in isolation. It's like deciding that an album sucks because track 13 is a pile of dung. Or maybe your "music" is too avant garde and will only appeal to a niche audience, like a kind of drum and bass thrash metal with lyrics that defend social causes in a particularly violent way.

 Why would anyone want to spend and extra 10 to 20 dollars to get a graphics kit to advertise for someone else? Basic, unmarked black is OK. (Yes, I am cheap. Really cheap.)

 Why don't stores like crc offer single wheels so those with part boost and part older standards can still get what they need. Would they not reach a wider market. I'm looking for 15x110 front and 142x12 rear. Drives me crazy. Guess it's hope hubs on rim of choice. Prolly a better alternative anyway.

 @Nukeproofinternational: Hey guys, what's the story on these Neutron wheels? I bought a set from Chain Reaction Cycles less than a month ago. I'm already having an issue with mine. I noticed these Neutrons are only listed on CRC's, site, including the standalone hubs, and I don't see them on your site at all. Has this product line been pulled? It would be nice to know, and if they have been pulled for some reason, it's not great that CRC is still selling them.

 @FLATLlNE: Complete engagement system failure. I have about 15 rides on them, and today I heard a loud pop during a climb. i thought it was my chain jumping gears and I was still able to pedal, so I didn't think much of it. Continued riding after the descent and started getting more of what I thought was the chain jumping, however the chain was staying in the same gear. That's when I noticed it was the cassette driver slipping. Now any amount of force on the drivetrain causes the driver to free spin past the engagement points.

 @FilUpGasInTheVan: Sounds like the toothed ring has let go inside the hubshell.

These hubs are rebranded Novatec d462sb hubs. I can't find any pictures of the internals, but if things are spinning freely imagine the engagement ring is threaded and has stripped away in the hub body.

Contact chain reaction cycles and warranty the hub.

 @FLATLlNE: one thing I forgot to mention is the hub does make somewhat normal although now quieter noise with normal freewheeling (aka backpedal or coasting), and as I turn the cranks forward, there is indication that there's something left there trying to engage, but there's no longer enough purchase to do so. I think perhaps one pawl failed and the rest broke trying to deal with the imbalance. I did start a warranty claim, but just thought it was odd in restrospect that it was so hard to find info on the Neutrons. Thanks for the hub info, that's good to know.

 @FilUpGasInTheVan: ah! You are probably correct, and the paws have broken. Those hubs are pretty easy to pull apart - why not look inside?

 @FLATLlNE: Update, in case anyone else is looking for the same answers I was. Hopefully this is a one-off, but I popped the driver shell off to find many small metal shards. I didn't inspect too close, but the pawls themselves look mostly intact. I saw chunks missing from directly behind the pawl pivot point on the freehub body, and there's a circular retaining spring or snap ring of some kind which holds all the pawls in place via a groove down their centerline. This seemed very loose, like it wasn't securing the pawls that well. If it takes too long to hear from CRC, maybe I'll crack it open again and get some pictures. Also, the engagement ring looked to be a splined interface, rather than threaded as you mentioned FLATLINE. I didn't check to see if that was loose or anything. I think the main failure is the missing material behind the pawl pivots which may be due to that retaining ring.

This certainly doesn't inspire confidence in the hubs they chose for these wheels. If anything, I would think the pawls would fail before material on the freehub body. I may have to convert to a refund and pick up some different wheels, whenever I finally hear back from CRC about this.

 @FilUpGasInTheVan: okay, good to know they are using a spline/keyway ring insert instead of threading them in, which some lower cost hubs often have. This is the same as their higher end hubs.

It's not uncommon to hear of paws breaking. Definitely unfortunate. CRC is pretty responsive. If you go to their warranty page, they will have a warranty form. Fill it in, and send with pictures. Usually they turn things around within 24 hours.

 Any chance a 35mm internal width version will happen? When I upgrade I'll want to be able to take full advantage of the 2.5 and 2.6 inch wide tires, would be nice to have a little more rim width...

 Damn, that's great they're using WTB's TCS rim profile! I've gotta say, that's one thing that REALLY impresses me about WTB rims, how damn reliable they are for tubeless. My Scraper i45s are the only rims I've ever seen where it's actually HARD to break the bead when changing a tire, I have to lay the wheel on the ground and push on the sidewall with both hands and a lot of force. Yet all the tires I've put on them have gone on and off brilliantly without the use of levers. Incredible really, how damn good that tubeless system is.
